So naturally (in what is rapidly becoming the streaming giant’s signature move) Netflix canceled the series just as it reached its creative peak. The eight episodes of this fourth and final chapter of the Archie Comics-inspired series have it making bold character choices and plot developments that are genuinely surprising.
Indeed, there is a finality to these new installments that make one question how soon into the production process the show’s creative team was informed of its cancellation.. Whomever knew what and when...

This year’s Brit List of best unproduced scripts is topped with twelve recommendations by Amy Guyler’s TV comedy-drama The Jude Problem from The Man In The High Castle producer Headline Pictures.
Close behind with eleven industry recommendations each are newsroom drama The Philadelphia Hope about a team of journalists behind an African American newspaper in 1920s Philadelphia, and crime-thriller Bad Manor about an infamous London crime family. Scroll down for the lineup in full.
Inspired by the U.S. Black List, the scripts showcase is compiled each year from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters.
In a change from previous editions, and to reflect that writers increasingly work across both film and TV, this year’s lineup is made up of both film and TV projects.
According to organizers, there were a record number of companies taking part this year, with 246 scripts put forward.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gives us its most ambitious episode to date, in this nightmare-packed effort.
This Chilling Adventures of Sabrina review contains spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review of the entire first season here.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Episode 5
"Yes, it's divine that Sabrina's duality almost got us killed"
We are at the halfway mark of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's first season, and by this point in the series viewers are either in or out.. That said, it is still a daring move to throw a bottle show episode this daring at its audience this early in the series' run. And while the resulting dark ride of an episode doesn't quite completely succeed, it does wind up providing us with the most insight into these characters yet.
Continuing where the last episode left off, the Spellmans find themselves dealing with a sleep demon, eye-rollingly named Batty Bat, whom...

When conflict doesn't come from the outside, sometimes it has to come from within.
With the appearance of the magic school and the sleep demon, it would make sense that they are the new entities posing a challenge for the characters when in fact it happens to be the people themselves.
During Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 4 and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Episode 5, Sabrina is stuck trying to conquer the harrowing that the Weird Sisters descend on her at The School For Unseen Arts. She then runs into similar trouble with a sleep demon that is seeking revenge against her father.
Meanwhile, Zelda and Hilda have to learn to approach their relationship with one another differently. Also, Ambrose tries not to fall under the weight of his house arrest and his inability to access real freedom.

A rare 35mm revival screening of Bernardo Bertolucci's 1979 controversial drama La Luna, organized and hosted by Cinema Retro columnist David Savage and co-sponsored by Iconic Linx, brought near-sellout crowds to Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan last Monday night, April 25th, including the family of the late Jill Clayburgh (1944-2010) star of the film.
Organized both as a belated tribute to Clayburgh and an attempt, as described by Savage, to bring the neglected film back into popular and critical consciousness, the screening was a family affair for the beloved Clayburgh-Rabe family, bringing together Jill's husband, famed playwright David Rabe, their actress daughter Lily Rabe (star of the forthcoming "Miss Stevens") and their actor son Michael Rabe. Matthew Barry, Jill Clayburgh's co-star and son in the film, now 53 and a casting director, flew in from Los Angeles to attend the screening and panel discussion that followed, moderated by Savage.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Best known for his 2006 debut feature, Abominable, Ryan Schifrin wrote and directed “The Ransom of Rusty Rex,” his segment of Tales of Halloween in which two kidnapping thieves get more than they bargained for on their latest job. Schifrin (whose legendary father, composer Lalo Schifrin, contributes a wonderful theme for the anthology), spoke with Daily Dead about working with one his heroes, finding the right tone and his segment’s classical literary roots.
There's an O. Henry story that clearly served as inspiration for your segment, "The Ransom of Rusty Rex." What was it that inspired you to draw from that story while writing your piece?

Nicholas Sparks is arguably one of the most successful crossover star in the film and publishing industries, prolific in churning out sweeping bodice rippers and offering them up for adaptation. But more than his ability to find the intersection of earnest romance and socially acceptable sappiness, Sparks films are major vehicles for male and female movie stars. Would Mandy Moore and Shane Wast be nostalgia bait for millennials without “A Walk to Remember?” Where else would Zac Efron try to cut his teeth as a romantic lead but “The Lucky One?” Matthew Barry, a casting director on the most iconic Sparks big screen.

Unhappy Together: Bertolucci’s Muted Return to the Director’s Seat
Seemingly against the odds, wheelchair bound Bernardo Bertolucci arrives with his first directorial effort, Me and You, in a decade, his last being the controversial 2003 film, The Dreamers. Also of note, it’s the first Italian language film Bertolucci’s made in thirty years, adding additional significance to this late work from the master provocateur. Yet, as arresting as its visuals are, paired with an odd mix of youthful soundtrack selections, the film never elevates beyond a sometimes ungainly and trifling exploration of themes and relationships exhibited more daringly and memorably in other works. Creative child artists recovering from years of drug abuse and the specter of incest amongst families of the privileged class promise a thickening soup, yet never congeal into anything more than a basic broth of domestic bonds.

Ellen Lewis on Michael ShannonWhen I was asked to write about an actor I love, Michael Shannon immediately jumped into my mind. It probably stems from the fact that I'm from Chicago, where Michael lived and worked for many years. In 1998 Paula Muzik, an agent in Chicago, called to tell me about Michael, who was coming to New York in the play "Killer Joe." There was an intensity and disturbing quality to Michael's performance in "Killer Joe." Combined with his physical presence and dark humor, he slightly frightened you. He was unlike any actor I had seen before, and it was exciting to think about the roles one could try him for.Years later I was casting "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" for Sidney Lumet. Sid's office at the time was at Sound One. Casting for Sidney, as other casting directors can attest, is an amazing experience—and unusual,...

Matthew Barry began his Hollywood life as an actor, appearing in such films as The Wraith and Bernardo Bertolucci's Luna. These days he's a respected casting director who has worked with the likes of Jerry Bruckheimer, Tim Burton, and Nick Cassavetes. What, exactly, prompted the change in career tracks? "I was about to turn 30 years old, and I was bored," Barry says bluntly. "I was doing some really bad television, and I remember sitting on the set one day, going, 'There's got to be more to life than this.'" After a brief stint in the UCLA film program, the NewYork City native decided to ask director Barry Levinson for a job — any job. "I knew an associate of his who hooked me up," Barry recalls. "The production manager [on Levinson's film Toys] said, 'Well, we need some help in casting.' I started working with Ellen Chenoweth on that film and loved every minute of it.
