Marc Sazer, a violinist and longtime union activist, has been elected vice president of L.A.’s American Federation of Musicians Local 47. He succeeds Rick Baptist, who resigned from the post in November after seven years on the job. The local gave no reason for his resignation.
In a special election, Sazer defeated Bonnie Janofsky and Kirstin Fife. Janofsky, who continues to serve on the union’s board as a trustee, had been appointed by the local’s executive board to serve as interim vice president until the special election could be held.
“I am both honored and thrilled to be able to serve our diverse and extraordinarily talented community of AFM musicians,” Sazer said. “Our musicians are both the backbone of our Southern California’s cultural equity and an integral part of the economic engine of our region.”

Stephanie O’Keefe has been elected president of the American Federation of Musicians Local 47, becoming the first woman president in the union’s 123-year history. John Acosta, who served three two-year terms as president, did not seek re-election. In the local’s other elections, Danita Ng-Poss has been elected secretary-treasurer – the first person of Asian descent to serve as a titled officer of the union – and Rick Baptist has been re-elected to a fourth term as vice president.
“I am honored to be elected president of Local 47,” said O’Keefe, a professional French hornist. “It has been a goal of mine for many, many years to be an advocate for my fellow musicians. We are the producers of one of the most valuable commodities on Earth; music has been an integral part of every culture, in every part of the world, for thousands of years. Yet, somehow, the producers of this commodity are often undervalued,...

Los Angeles’ musicians union, Afm Local 47, is halting a wide range of meetings and services to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. In a message to their members, the local’s leaders said that “In an abundance of caution and for the well-being of our members and staff, Afm Local 47 is taking increased precautionary measures regarding the use of our facilities while the situation surrounding the Covid-19 coronavirus continues to evolve.”
And with concerts being cancelled all across the world, the union is telling its members that “if one of your engagements is cancelled or you are unable to work due to Covid-19 or any other illness, please check your contract to review the cancellation policy and to review any force majeure provisions that may apply.” Pearl Jam, Mariah Carey and numerous other acts have postponed shows, as have several major music festivals, including Coachella and the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.
