Exclusive: Disney+ Hotstar isn’t done with the Criminal Justice franchise just yet — in fact, it might only just be getting started.
We can reveal the streamer has ordered a fourth season of the Hindi-language series, which is from Applause Entertainment and was originally based on the 2008 BBC series of the same name.
Peter Moffat’s British show went to two seasons, but Gaurav Banerjee, Disney+ Hotstar’s Head of Content for Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star, and his team have now taking the Indian show well beyond that point. You can watch a teaser trailer for the fourth season here.
“This is a pretty special moment because it marks five years of the Hotstar Specials journey, which launched in 2019,” he said. “Criminal Justice was our first big fiction series, and it is fantastic to see the franchise become stronger and continue to get critical acclaim and consumer love.

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.
The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”
“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.
Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.

This year’s batch of Emmy-nominated series is rich with visually arresting locations that subtly buttress dramatic themes and flesh out the lives of its leading men, from the Altadena Craftsman that serves as the home of grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segal) in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking” to the California prisons (the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi and the Stark Youth Training Facility in Chino) that house Bill Hader’s title character in HBO’s “Barry” to the downtown L.A. high rise where covert-agent-on-the-lam Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) lives when he’s posing as a wealthy investor in FX’s “The Old Man.”
And, it turns out, choosing a location is not dissimilar to casting an actor, with looks, price, and personality all factoring into the decision.

Kumail Nanjiani was just Emmy nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for his searing dramatic performance in the Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales.” But the news came at a peculiar time, as the Emmy nods were announced the day before SAG-AFTRA went on strike, joining WGA members on the picket line.

Transforming actors into well-known figures such as Tammy Wynette and Princess Diana was a challenge for artisans, who experimented with techniques to come up with hair and makeup that would look authentic to viewers.
Cate Hall spent hours with Elizabeth Debicki while recreating Princess Diana’s sophisticated coiffure from the early 1990s for Season 5 of “The Crown.” Through a series of incremental adjustments to the wig — and plenty of patience from Debicki – Hall got the look she desired.
“You hold one another’s hand as you keep slicing the wig with a razor and inching towards a shape that feels recognizable,” she recalls of her collaboration with Debicki.
Hall admits that in her first attempt at the wig, Debicki looked more like a “lady called Brenda from 1983” than the glamorous royal. But she kept working on it.

London, May 27 (Ians) Five subtypes of heart failure that could potentially be used to predict future risk for individual patients have been identified using artificial intelligence (AI) tools, according to a new study, led by an Indian-origin researcher.
Heart failure is an umbrella term for when the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly. Current ways of classifying heart failure do not accurately predict how the disease is likely to progress.
For the study, published in Lancet Digital Health, researchers from the University College London looked at detailed anonymised patient data from more than 300,000 people aged 30 years or older who were diagnosed with heart failure in the UK over a span of 20 years.
Using several machine learning methods, they identified five subtypes: early onset, late onset, atrial fibrillation related (atrial fibrillation is a condition causing an irregular heart rhythm), metabolic (linked to obesity but with a low...

"I fell completely in love with the role, and somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew it had the potential to change my life. Of course, I had no idea that people would probably know me as ‘Hathoda Tyagi’. I have to constantly try and do something which is as exciting as Hathoda, which is going to be very difficult," actor Abhishek Banerjee tells Ians.
The actor will soon be seen in the Short ‘Sex, Likes and Stories’, directed by Keith Gomes on an iPhone, where he plays the character of ‘Chokra Boy’, hailing from a simple social and economic background who uses the social media to pretend to be someone else and tries to live a completely different life. Banerjee smiles that the character is completely opposite to who he is. "I am who I am. Believe me, I cannot even pretend in an interview with a media person.

Kanpur, May 12 (Ians) A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has proposed a universal mechanism for turbulent relaxation, which can be applied to a wide range of fluids, including plasmas and complex fluids.
This principle, called the principle of vanishing nonlinear transfer (Pvnlt), explains how a turbulent system attains a steady, stable state of relaxation when the driving force is switched off.
The study titled ‘Universal turbulent relaxation of fluids and plasmas by the principle of vanishing nonlinear transfers’ has been published in the journal ‘Physical Review E (Letters)’.
The team comprises professor Supratik Banerjee, and researchers Arijit Halder and Nandita Pan from the Department of Physics, Iit Kanpur.
According to an official release, the researchers used the example of mixing milk in a cup of coffee.

Explaining the reason behind choosing Pk’s birthday, Aiff Secretary General Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran said it is a well-known fact that Pk was an exemplary footballer, who played a pivotal role in India’s historic gold medal triumph in the 1962 Asian Games.
“However, we often forget Pradip da was a teacher par excellence too. Once he hung up his boots, he took up coaching and for the next 30 years,...

Kolkata, May 11 (Ians) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday directed state Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam to explore the possibilities of introducing a three-year diploma course in medicine in the state that will run in a parallel manner with the existing Mbbs degree course.

Her proposal has, however, evoked controversies with the opposition parties and a section of the medical fraternity described the decision as a risky proposition.
Addressing media persons, the Chief Minister said that although many hospitals are coming up in the state, there is acute shortage of doctors there. “So, we will have to examine whether a three-year diploma course in medicine can be started in line with the diploma in engineering. After launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for banning the screening of the film ‘The Kerala Story’ in the state, the West Bengal Bjp is likely to challenge the interdict in the Calcutta High Court.
A state committee member of the party said that the main contention is about the justification for banning it in Bengal, when the same is being screened in Kerala. “We will be consulting the legal brains and as suggested by them we might move the court against the decision to ban on specific grounds,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state spokesman of Bjp in West Bengal said that the banning of the film in West Bengal is a classic example of the surrender of the state administration to religious fanatics.
“In a way the chief minister also insulted the common people from the minority community who are equally against such fanaticism. This decision...

India on Monday recorded a single-day rise of 918 new Covid cases in the past 24 hours pushing the active cases to 6,350, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
The highest Covid cases were reported from Kerala, followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat (740), Karnataka (616), Tamil Nadu (363), Telangana (237), and Delhi (209). The country also reported four Covid deaths — two in Rajasthan, and one each in Karnataka and Kerala.
"We believe that this is a change between the two seasons and we are seeing a spurt in the cases because of that. Reliance Foundation Hospital, told Ians.
"Covid is now just like the flu or a common cold. There is no significant increase in hospitalisation, ICU admission or death rate," added epidemiologist Dr.

London, Feb 23 (Ians) Organ damage persisted in 59 per cent of long Covid patients a year after initial symptoms, even in those not severely affected when first diagnosed with the virus, according to researchers, led by one of an Indian-origin.
The findings, published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, confirmed that 29 per cent of patients with long Covid had multi-organ impairment, with persistent symptoms and reduced function at six and 12 months. About 59 per cent of long Covid patients had single organ impairment 12 months after initial diagnosis.
“Symptoms were common at six and 12 months and associated with female gender, younger age and single organ impairment,” said senior author Professor Amitava Banerjee, Institute of Health Informatics at University College London.
The study reported a reduction in symptoms between six and 12 months — extreme breathlessness (in 38 per cent to 30 per cent of patients), cognitive dysfunction (48 per cent to 38 per cent) and poor...

There’s substance underneath all the cocaine and thongs,” says Welcome to Chippendales creator Robert Siegel. The writer/producer behind Pam & Tommy, Hulu’s 2021 dramatisation of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s sex tape scandal, has turned his attention to the wild story behind the establishment of America’s first male strip club. The eight-episode drama – out now on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK – follows Kumail Nanjiani as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the Indian entrepreneur who founded Chippendales, as he grasps for the American dream. Banerjee’s hubris, however, ultimately led to destruction, murder, and suicide.
The story began in 1975 with Bombay-born Banerjee purchasing a failing discotheque in West Hollywood, which he intended to turn into the city’s first backgammon club. He named the venue “Destiny II” – there was no Destiny I but, as Nanjiani’s Banerjee explains in the series, “The II implies it’s a sequel,...

Kumail Nanjiani has broken out in a huge way over the past several years, garnering an Oscar nomination for his The Big Sick screenplay and even joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Eternals. Now he has a taste for playing more villains, but may be stopped by the force of Hollywood.
Kumail Nanjiani starred in Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales, based on the book “Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders.” In Welcome to Chippendales, Kumail Nanjiani plays Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of male striptease enterprise Chippendales, launched in 1979. Banerjee would end up pleading guilty to racketeering, attempted arson and murder for hire, including that of producer Nick De Noia (played by Murray Bartlett in Welcome to Chippendales). It was in his cell that Banerjee hanged himself in 1994.

“Welcome to Chippendales” details the rise and fall of the male exotic dancing troupe, as told through the tale of creator Somen “Steve” Banerjee. And yet, little is known about Banerjee’s wife, Irene, and her origin story. So, when Annaleigh Ashford signed on to play the loving partner of the immigrant entrepreneur-turned-millionaire criminal on the Hulu series, she knew she had a tough job ahead.
Having appeared on Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” as Paula Jones, Ashford says she knew the responsibility of portraying a real life figure in history. But without much character background to research for Irene, the Tony Award winner was left to dive deeper into the historical context to imagine Irene’s general motive.

The rise and fall of the infamous all-male erotic revue is the backdrop to Hulu’s limited series Welcome to Chippendales, which follows the strip club’s founder Somen “Steve” Banerjee from up-and-coming businessman in the 1980s to a vilified accessory to murder in the early ’90s. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Thursday said the social media is often driven by a narrowness of views that “enclose” collective narrative and makes it more divisive and destructive. In his address at the inauguration ceremony of the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (Kiff) here, he said that the collective narratives in recent times have often been shaped by social media, which is often driven by a narrowness of views that limits human nature to its baser self.
“This sense of negativity often increases the social media consumption and such pursuits often enclose collective narrative and makes it more divisive and destructive,” said Shah Rukh Khan, who is also the brand ambassador of West Bengal.

Doug Jeffery left his job as host of The Men of Adonis touring revue in Australia in 1992; three weeks later, the FBI came to the show. Jeffery’s replacement was taken off stage and informed that there had been a hit put out on him and he was in danger. To this day, Jeffery doesn’t know if that hit was meant for him.
It’s one of the many ways in which Jeffery — who is now an actor in Los Angeles and spoke to IndieWire via Zoom — confirmed that while Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” seems implausible and extravagant, it’s also shockingly accurate. Jeffery worked at Chippendales, both at the club and in the touring company, from the early 1980s until 1992 — right around when “excuse my expression: The shit hit the fan,” per Jeffery.

When Somen “Steve” Banerjee started the male strip club Chippendales in 1979, he wanted subversion. The first few episodes of Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” track this journey, with Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani) turning heads, getting press, and fielding outright backlash for displaying male bodies and catering to the female gaze.
But the Chippendales story is rife with conflict. Episode 4 puts the spotlight on Otis (Quentin Plair), a fictional character pulled from the real-life experiences of Black Chippendales dancers. Plair didn’t know much about the club or its history (outside of some ubiquitous “Saturday Night Live” sketches), but when he got cast as Otis, he knew this would be a different kind of challenge.
“I’ve played a lot of roles in my past that dealt with segregation or discrimination,” Plair told IndieWire in a phone interview. “This was a really unique look at it where the focus could, on the outside,...

In the first four episodes of "Welcome to Chippendales," the titular club, owned by Steve Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani), only has one Black dancer: Otis, played by Quentin Plair. The show depicts him dealing with racism from customers and Steve himself, all while trying to make a living in 1980s Los Angeles. His issues working at Chippendales come to a head in episode three, which premiered on Nov. 29 on Hulu.
Ahead, we break down the character and the true stories that inspired him.
Was Otis the Chippendales Dancer a Real Person?
It doesn't appear that there was a real Chippendales dancer named Otis. Instead, the character's story in "Welcome to Chippendales" seems to be based on the stories of real Chippendales dancers, especially one in particular: Hodari Sababu - who, according to him, was the only Black dancer at Chippendales.

Horror-comedy has held Indian audiences in thrall since the early 2000s, with more than 100 films in the genre being released. Amar Kaushik’s “Bhediya” (literally “wolf”), Bollywood’s first creature comedy, despite its punishing length, is a terrifically entertaining romp through the jungles of Northeastern India that delivers pro-environment and anti-racism messages and also has the potential to become a franchise.
Top Bollywood star Varun Dhawan plays Bhaskar, an ambitious Delhi-based road worker who has mortgaged his family home in order to secure a contract to build a highway through the dense jungles of Arunachal Pradesh in Northeastern India, which borders China. He is accompanied by his cousin Janardhan (Abhishek Banerjee) and has locals Jomin (Paalin Kabaak) and Panda (Deepak Dobriyal) to help. The catch is that he has to get the permission of the local villagers. The village elders object, but Bhaskar convinces the youth that they need malls and “Netflix not nature.

Anyone who's listened to the excellent podcast "Welcome to Your Fantasy" or read the book "Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders" knows that the story behind the legendary touring striptease troupe is a wild one. At the center of it all is the truly fascinating and downright scary character of Somen "Steve" Banerjee, the Chippendales impresario with a dark side. What starts out as a seemingly inspiring story of an Indian immigrant's ambition to live the American dream quickly shifts into nightmare territory, with Banerjee becoming increasingly reckless in his attempts to protect the business he built.
It was only a matter of time before the story was adapted for the screen, which has now transpired with the release of a biographical true crime limited series on Hulu. "Welcome to Chippendales" sees none other than comedian turned action hero turned dramatic actor Kumail Nanjiani take on the role of the sinister Chippendales founder.

On the wildly fascinating limited true-crime series, “Welcome to Chippendales”, Nicola Peltz portrays the ill-fated Playboy model and actress Dorothy Stratten. She, along with her husband at the time, promoter Paul Snider (Dan Stevens), were two of several unexpected real-life figures who were key in making Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s (Kumail Nanjiani) dreams of running a successful nightclub a reality as he transformed his Los Angeles property from a backgammon club into a male strip revue.
While Peltz’s portrayal is brief, with her only appearing in the premiere before her untimely death is revealed at the end of the episode, Stratten has a lasting legacy of her own. “I’ve never actually played a real person and so being able to do that was amazing and scary,” Peltz tells Et about taking on the role.
Originally from Canada, Stratten moved to Los Angeles in 1978, just one year before the Chippendales were founded,...

Hulu's new miniseries "Welcome to Chippendales" tells the story of the rise and fall of Somen "Steve" Banerjee, the man behind the Chippendales empire, and the extreme measures he took to keep his business, recognized as the fist male strip club, at the top.
During his career as the manager of Chippendales, Banerjee partnered up with Nick De Noia, a producer and choreographer whose edge brought Chippendales to international acclaim. But creative differences and frequent disputes with Banerjee ultimately led to him branching off and starting his own Chippendales company.
The expansion of the Chippendales empire under De Noia, however, ended abruptly when he was murdered in April 1987. The circumstances of his death would remain a mystery for years, until a hitman linked to Banerjee came forward with information connecting the businessman to De Noia's murder.
Here is the unsettling story of De Noia's murder.

Hulu's miniseries "Welcome to Chippendales" takes a deep dive into the early beginnings of Chippendales, the first ever all-men strip club in the United States, and the turbulent years that followed. Established by Somen "Steve" Banerjee in 1979, the club quickly garnered attention from women in the Los Angeles area. The growing buzz spurred Banerjee to briefly partner up with Paul Snider, a local nightclub promoter and husband of Playboy model Dorothy Stratten.
Stratten, played by Nicola Peltz Beckham in the series, was named Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1980 and a rising star in the modeling and film industries, but her potential was cut short when Snider murdered her in August 1980.
Ahead of "Welcome to Chippendale's" hitting Hulu on Nov. 22, here's a deeper look at the tragic murder of Stratten.

Hulu's "Welcome to Chippendales" crime drama depicts the true life story of Somen "Steve" Banerjee (portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani), the Indian immigrant who founded the multimillion dollar global male stripping empire that swept the nation in the '80s and '90s.
The eight-part limited series from "Pam & Tommy" creator Robert Siegel centers on Banerjee's rise and fall in an outrageous plot filled with greed, scandal, and murder. In addition to Nanjiani, the show also stars Nicola Peltz Beckham as Dorothy Stratten, Dan Stevens as Paul Snider, and Murray Bartlett as Nick De Noia - the Chippendales choreographer/Banerjee's business partner who (spoiler alert) was murdered in 1987.
"Welcome to Chippendales" isn't the first retelling of this tragic crime saga. Discovery+ released a four-part docuseries in September 2021 titled "Curse of the Chippendales," which chronicles the same harrowing tale through interviews with former Chippendales dancers and original business leads.
