Netflix Animation laid off 30 employees on Wednesday, the streaming service confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. It is it the latest in a series of cutbacks and restructuring that began last spring after Netflix reported that it had lost 200,000 subscribers during the first quarter of 2022, followed by a loss of 970,000 subscribers during the second quarter.
During this period, which had already included 70-plus layoffs in animation and numerous cancelled projects including Meghan Markle’s Pearl, Netflix Animation began restructuring that saw new leaders take over in the past few months. The studio is now led by vp of animation film content Karen Toliver and vp animation film production Traci Balthazor. It is understood that Tuesday’s layoffs reflect Netflix’s intent to reorganize animation film production under Balthazor.
Simultaneously, Netflix Animation is in the process of opening a new Burbank facility to house its original feature animation projects.

Netflix has laid off 30 staffers from its Film Animation teams, IndieWire has confirmed.
Earlier this year, Netflix unveiled new leadership for its Animation Film team: vice president of Animation Film Content Karen Toliver and VP of Animation Film Production Traci Balthazor. Wednesday’s changes organize the animated-film production business under Balthazor, a person with knowledge of the plans told us. The 30 roles in question were no longer needed, the person said.
Netflix has had seven animated projects nominated for Oscars over the past five years, including a win for “If Anything Happens, I Love You” (Best Animated Short Film). The other nominated animated films include 2022 nominees “Robin Robin” (Best Animated Short) and “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Best Animated Feature), 2021’s “Over The Moon” (Best Animated Feature Film) and “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (Best Animated Feature), and 2020’s “I Lost My Body” (Best Animated Feature) and “Klaus” (Best...

Netflix is laying off 30 staffers from its film animation team in the wake of a restructuring to its leadership for that department.
The team, led by Karen Toliver (VP Animation Film Content) and Traci Balthazor (VP Animation Film Production), aims for better collaboration closer to traditional animation film studios, resulting in 30 different roles that are no longer needed, an individual with knowledge of the decision said.
The move is not expected to lead to a downturn in the overall amount of content that Netflix puts out from its film animation unit.
Netflix had no comment.

Netflix Animation has laid off 30 employees, Variety has confirmed.
The news comes after recent executive shake-ups, with Netflix earlier this year appointing Karen Toliver as vice president of animated film content and Traci Balthazor as vice president of animated film production.
The layoffs are a result of Netflix consolidating its animation film production team under one central leader, Balthazor, as she continues to work closely with Toliver.
The downsizing does not signal a decrease in output from Netflix Animation, which has earned seven Oscar nominations since 2020, winning for “If Anything Happens, I Love You.”
The streamer’s slate of animated features and shorts includes “Robin,” “Klaus,” “Over the Moon, Back to the Outback,” Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” and Chris Williams’ “The Sea Beast.” Coming soon are Henry Selick and Jordan Peele’s “Wendell & Wild,” Nora Twomey’s “My Father’s Dragon,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,...

Exclusive: The Netflix Animation overhaul continues with the exit of 30 employees, Deadline has confirmed. This comes after Netflix set new leadership for the Animation Film team with Karen Toliver (VP Animation Film Content) and Traci Balthazor (VP Animation Film Production). They have been tasked with streamlining the animation team, which explains the attrition.
This does not signal a downturn in animation output for a division that in five years had seven Oscar nominees, with a win for If Anything Happens, I Love You.
Netflix’s original animation productions includes Robin, Robin, Klaus, Kris Pearn’s The Willoughbys, Over the Moon, Back to the Outback, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood from Richard Linklater, and the recently released The Sea Beast directed by Chris Williams. Upcoming releases including Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Wendy Rogers’ The Magician’s Elephant,...

Exclusive: We are hearing from sources that Cattywumpus, the Gore Verbinski-directed animated movie about outer space felines, will be getting shopped around town to other studios.
Verbinski, whose films have grossed 3.76 billion and who won an Oscar in 2012 for the Paramount animated movie Rango, had been working on his latest film at Netflix.
Such is the complex nature of animated film production, where quite often halfway through, stories and plans can pivot. There’s a history of that from movies such as Pixar’s Soul and Dinosaur and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Cattywumpus repped Verbinski’s second animated movie after the Johnny Depp-voiced Western Rango, which grossed 246 million at the worldwide box office.
Netflix, we understand, gave the creative team the option to go shop the movie elsewhere.
Netflix has seen promotions and changeovers in its animation executive suite over the summer.

Karen Toliver, VP Animation Film, is being promoted to lead the Animation Film team. With that change, Melissa Cobb will move from her role as VP Animation Film but will stay on with Netflix as a producer. If ever you needed proof that box-office prognostication has the potential to be even more foolish than playing slots, predicting next month’s weather, or reading someone psychically, consider this. If you’d said at the beginning of the summer movie season this year that Planes, the not-very-anticipated-at-all spin-off of the Cars films from a Disney offshoot traditionally known for making direct-to-dvd sequels that are best left ignored, would outgross The Lone Ranger domestically at the box office, people would’ve thought you were begging to be taken away in a straitjacket. Granted, not many film writers were predicting great things for The Lone Ranger, but even if it didn’t hit the multiplexes very hard, it would have to do better than, of all things, Planes, right? Wrong. As of this writing, Planes has grossed $89.8 million in North America, while The Lone Ranger grossed $89.3 million. (Planes is, unlike the Johnny Depp Western,...

The Planes Blu-Ray has a release date, and you obviously want to get this one on your calendar, both because you know you want it, and because it’s smack dab in holiday buying season.
You may recall that during our Podcast review that covered Planes, I wasn’t all that favorable of it, but that was mostly because I was holding it to Pixar standards. I didn’t exactly dislike it, but you expect so much at this point that I hoped for more. Of course, the kids wanted nothing to do with my snooty, movie critic take on things, and loved it.
You might also recall that I wondered what direction they would take on the bonus features when this one came out, and it looks as though they are going a bit minimalist. A bad move, if you ask me, but it still looks like we have...

Yes, Disney’s Planes is like Cars in the sky.
The animated movie was originally planned to debut on DVD and Blu-ray, but flew to theaters first instead.
Planes tells the story a crop duster, appropriately named Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook, Answers to Nothing), who dreams of flying in the greatest air race ever. The PG-rated family film’s voice cast also includes Stacy Keach (End of the Road), Brad Garrett (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone), Teri Hatcher (Coraline), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (TV’s Veep), John Cleese (Winnie the Pooh), Cedric the Entertainer (Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted), Anthony Edwards (Flipped) and Val Kilmer...

One gloriously hot summer morning last month I joined a group of intrepid film journalists and kids’ TV presenters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire to meet the filmmakers behind Disney’s Planes and experience some truly epic aerobatic flying. White Waltham is one of the oldest airfields in the country, and you may have seen it doubling for a 1950s’ Heathrow Airport in the 2011 film My Week With Marilyn.
The day started with a short safety briefing, where four-time British National Aerobatic Champion Alan Cassidy demonstrated some of the aerobatic techniques used by Dusty and the other Planes characters in the film. Using a small wooden model plane he took us through the various racing turns, half Cubans and, most terrifying of all, the vertical reversal (pulling back on the stick until you’re flying straight up and then, at the top of climb, turning the aircraft to point...

Burbank, Calif. (February 28, 2013) – Dane Cook has been tapped to voice the lead character Dusty, a plane with high hopes in Disney’s Planes. Inspired by the world of Cars and directed by Disneytoon Studios veteran and aviation enthusiast Klay Hall (King of the Hill, The Simpsons), Disney’s Planes is an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure about Dusty’s dream of competing as a high-flying air racer—and his decidedly unfortunate fear of heights. The film takes off in theaters in 3D on Aug. 9, 2013. “Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character,” said Hall. “He gives Dusty a great edge.” Cook is well known for his appearances on Comedy Central and HBO specials, and for his successful comedy albums.
