Creep director Christopher Smith will direct episodes of horror comedy series Video Nasty for BBC Three. Here are the first details:

He returned to horror with 2020’s The Banishing, and his next film, Spider Island, looks like it will have a similarly irreverent mix of horror and comedy to his 2006 hit Severance.
According to British Comedy Guide, Smith is also set to direct episodes of Video Nasty, a new horror comedy series for BBC Three.

Terms of a deal on pay and working conditions likely to spillover to indie film
UK independent film producers are closely watching for the outcome of negotiations about pay and working conditions in scripted TV between producers’ organisation Pact and creative industries union Bectu.
Many fear the already difficult job of financing and making independent films will become even harder if the cost of hiring crew rises significantly.
Pact and Bectu are in negotiations to update their collective UK Independent Television TV Drama Agreement. Although they are negotiating a scripted TV deal, the terms often cascade down to agreements in independent film.

Joanna Hogg dedicated her award to the late Chris Collins.
The 24th annual Women in Film and TV Awards, held at the Park Lane Hilton in London yesterday, honoured Vanessa Redgrave with its Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Eon Productions. She is pictured with David Hare, who presented her trophy. “Thank you beyond words,” Redgrave said. “Good luck to everybody who is trying to do good work in film and TV wherever they may be.”
Rosamund Pike was honoured with the Mac Best Performance Award for her role in Gone Girl. The heavily pregnant actress accepted with a charming video message that praised novelist Gillian Flynn and director David Fincher for taking a risk by casting her as Amy. She joked that she could give birth while the lunch was going on, and quipped that “it takes less time to make a human being than it does to make a film.”

Bobcat Goldthwait, Buddy Giovinazzo & Joe Dante Among Fantasia Fest’s 2013 Frontieres Co-Prod Market
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival – it takes place this year between July 18 and August 6 and has always been about more than just the films. They offer plenty of panel discussions and master classes every year, and last year’s edition introduced the Frontières International Co-Production Market, uniting North American, European, and Australasian talent and funders in an initiative focused specifically on fostering genre film productions and relationships. Noteworthy projects from the inaugural edition included new works from seasoned filmmakers such as Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), as well as up-and-coming talent like Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution), Paul Campion (The Devil’s Rock), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), and Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are). At the Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous – a sort of three-day industry cocktail party – professional introductions were made, and many of the projects found co-producers and/or international sales agents.

Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, widely acclaimed as one of the largest and most influential genre film festivals in the world, is proud to announce the official selections of the second edition of its Frontières International Co-Production Market.
Frontières is the first and only international co-production market to connect North America with Europe, in an environment focused specifically on genre film production. It was just announced last week that Frontières will become a circuit in-between Fantasia, in July, and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, in April. This initiative was made possible by funding from the Media Mundus program of the European Commission. Frontières was the only new initiative to be funded by the program this year.

Screen Australia has granted more than $276,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature films, including projects by the co-writer of local smash The Sapphires and the team behind Wish You Were Here.
It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.
Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.
Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...

I moderated a Women in Film and Television International panel on new methods and old for financing features with:
Julie Baines
Producer, Dan Films, UK
has had an extensive career in the film industry. She founded the independent production company Dan Films in 1994. In 1998 she was named one of the Top Ten Producers to Watch by Variety. Since then, she has established herself as a leading figure in both British Films and international multi-party co-productions.
Julie most recently produced Christopher Smith's Triangle, a psychological thriller starring Melissa George, which is being distributed worldwide by Icon.
As well as producing with acclaimed directors including Nicolas Roeg, Peter Bogdanovich, Frank Van Passel, Michael Winterbottom, Mika Kaurismaki and Deepa Mehta, she enjoys discovering and working with new talent. Julie acts as the external examiner for the Ma Producing course at the National Film and Television School, Beaconsfield. In effect her final comment was that one must be clever to finance films today. Their U.K./ German coproduction uses funds, tax credits, distribution pre-buys and now private equity.
Christine Berg, Deputy Director, Ffa, German Federal Film Board has been deputy chairman of the German Federal Film Board (Ffa) since 1 February 2012. In this capacity she is responsible for all Ffa funding. She was previously project director of the German Federal Film Fund (Dfff), which was initiated on 1 January 2007 by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Bkm) and coordinated by the Ffa.
In addition, Christine Berg, a native of Hamburg, headed up the Msh - Gesellschaft zur Förderung audiovisueller Werke in Schleswig-Holstein mbH (Society for the Promotion of Audio-visual Works in Schleswig-Holstein), was artistic director of the festival Nordic Film Days in Lübeck, as well as being director of the Hamburg Filmförderung Office and producer at Kinowelt. She announced she is soon going to a new job....but meanwhile, the Dfff is automatic. If 25% of the budget of a film with German distribution attached is spent in Germany then there is a 20% rebate on the spend. Not bad...
Debbie Elbin, Founder and President, The New York Picture Company launched launched Ps:usa, Inc. a subsidiary of The N.Y. Picture Company Inc., at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Specifically targeted at international producers interested in producing content in the U.S., Ps:usa, Inc. offers access to the new U.S. production incentives and tax credits. In 2007, Debbie was based in Berlin, Germany, where she served as production consultant during the prep phase of the Wachowski Brothers' picture Speed Racer. On tap for Joel Silver, Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow, she was asked to report on the January '07 German film incentive program, as well as local VFX capabilities.
Prior, Elbin was based in Moscow, Russia, where she held the position of VP Production, Sony Pictures TV International for the territories Russia and the Cis. Her mandate was to found a new Russian company for the studio and head it as General Manager. Other than investigating how to structure such an entity, this also entailed finding viable producing partners and building creative teams of local writers and directors. In addition to selling two comedy formats, one of which was Bete La Fea, which subsequently rated #1 for Ctc, she was in charge of six productions in various stages of development, production, or post production. Genre-wise, they ranged from telenovellas to comedy series and a game show. Among those were the highly rated Russian versions of Married with Children entitled Happy Together, The Nanny, and the original Talisman of Love and Nastia.
Fall 2004, Elbin founded the Dutch production company, The N.L. Picture Company B.V. in Rotterdam, Holland. Created to develop and produce international film and TV co-productions as an EU partner, The N.L. Picture Company B.V. Xtc, a U.S./Netherlands co-production, which was selected for the Holland Film Meeting sidebar of the Netherlands Film Festival, Utrecht, is the first film in development. The Kitchen, a television comedy series, was developed for Wdr in conjunction with Colonia Media. Debbie was Executive Producer of Germany's no. 1 rated prime-time series,Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten (1992) (Good Times, Bad Times) for Rtl and Grundy Ufa. As show runner, she was responsible for the entire overhaul of the 10 year old series. She created twelve new lead characters, updated storylines and implemented new looks for everything from lighting to make-up, costumes and scenery. In addition she wrote the 10th anniversary week (five episodes), which dramatically increased audience share from 23% to 37%. In the U.S., she served as Co-Executive Producer of Sidney Lumet's 100 Centre Street (2001), A&E TV Networks first original drama series. This was the groundbreaker in 24p HDTV format production. 100 Centre Street was a co-production of Jaffe/Braunstein Films and Pearson Television Entertainment. Not only did the series receive critical acclaim, but it won the 2001 Koln Screenings Award for "Top Ten Dramas Worldwide". She is a member of the DGA as Director and Upm, serves as a member of the Directors East Coast Council and works on sundry committees, including the Special Projects and Disciplinary Committees. She is the initiator of the Global Cinema Initiative. She is also one of the first members of the Dean's Council of New York University and is the founder of the Dramatic and Comedy Writing Awards for Nyu Graduate and Undergraduate students.
Kristine Knudsen, Producer studied film theory at the College of Lillehammer and worked for Nordisk Film & TV in Bergen, Norway. Later she studied film production at the Filmakademie Baden-württemberg in Germany, followed by the Mega Master in audiovisual management in Ronda, Spain. In 2006 she established the company Knudsen & Streuber Medienmanufaktur GmbH in Berlin together with German producing partner Tom Streuber. In 2010 she established the company Den Siste Skilling As in Bergen, Norway. Knudsen & Streuber Medienmanufaktur GmbH (est. 2006) develop and produce both prestigious and entertaining feature and documentary films, focusing on the German and Scandinavian market.
Currently the feature film Gnade (Mercy), written by Kim F. Aakeson and directed by Matthias Glasner is in the Berlinale Competition. It took one year to raise financing in Germany. They also have the documentary Atw – To Be or To Perform is in pre-production. Their previous films include the feature film Reine Geschmacksache (Fashion Victims).
Pati Keilwerth, of Patisserie Film, produced Utopia in Ethiopia , whose financing was done via crowd funding on The Fledgling Fund. Utopia in Ethiopia is an interactive web documentary about Awra Amba - a small, Ethiopian village whose way of life has become a model for development, gender equality and democracy worldwide. Founded almost 40 years ago by an illiterate farmer, who had a vision of a better world, Awra Amba is a thriving self-help community, comprised of 400 people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds. They have come together with the common belief that there is a way out of poverty by making women equal with men, by working instead of praying and by discarding ancient traditional practices. With such remarkable results without any external help, Awra Amba receives thousands of curious visitors every year, who come to learn from their way of life.
After finishing law school with a specialisation in Copyright Law, Competitive Law and Anti-Trust Law at the University Passau, Pati Keilwerth was hired to coordinate the protocol of the Berlin Film Festival. She continued working for the Berlinale in various departments and for the Broadcaster rbb, while studying Audiovisual Media Science at the Filmschool Hff “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Directly after her diploma with a thesis on international Co-Production she began employment with Wim Wenders.
After a three-year tenure as Wim Wenders’s Executive Assistant, she embarked on new terrain in the media industry and has been engaged in digital distribution, online and social media marketing, as well as branded entertainment ever since.
The discussion ensuing about how to treat monies raised via crowd funding, the need to account for 2,000 donors who do not get charitable tax write-offs and who must be accounted for as investors raised the level of excitement between panelists and the audience perceptively.

At the end of a long pier just off the beach at Surfer’s Paradise in the Australian state of Queensland, the three-story front end of an ocean liner sits on a huge pile of rocks. It’s not wrecked—although many of the people who walk its decks will be. Instead, it’s the ingenious solution to the problem of making a film that’s mainly set on such a vessel—one that you can’t really hire, or buy off eBay. It also helps when you need your movie to showcase real waves, and not the computer-generated variety.

London -- The U.K. Film Council is pumping a whopping 1.6 million pounds ($2.8 million) into Christopher Smith's psychological thriller "Triangle."
The cash will come from the Council's Premiere Fund, the government-backed body said Monday.
Written and directed by Smith, who shot to cult status here with the low-budget slasher "Creep," the movie is produced by Jason Newmark and Julie Baines of U.K.-based Dan Films and Christ Brown from Australian banner Pictures in Paradise.
"Triangle" will be distributed worldwide by Icon Entertainment International, soon to be under new management after Stewart Till's buyout.
Starring Melissa George and Michael Dorman, the film tells the story of a woman on a sailing ship who, after a freak storm, finds herself clinging to the upturned hull of the boat. Rescue comes in the form of a giant ocean liner that arrives in the fog. The project had previously attracted 53,000 pounds ($93,500) from the Council's development cashpool.

This French sex comedy from actor-turned-director Michel Blanc (Grosse Fatigue) had audiences in francophone Montreal chuckling from start to finish.
Jettisoning plot in favor of exploring a network of differing relationships, Blanc uses crisp dialogue to pilot a lighthearted trawl through the infidelities of the French middle class. As dramatic as it humorous, this film certainly should hit with sophisticated audiences who've been around long enough to laugh at life's myriad imperfections, inconsistencies and contradictions. See How They Run (Embrassez qui vous voudrez) received its world premiere out of competition here in Montreal.
The slimline story revolves around a group of competitive pals taking a well-needed summer vacation. The slightly snobby Elisabeth (Charlotte Rampling) takes off for the beach, leaving her caring but philandering husband Bertrand (Jacques Dutronc) behind. At the hotel with man-hungry friend Julie, Elisabeth runs into her downwardly mobile neighbors Vero and Jerome, who are so broke they're holidaying in a trailer park. The women are soon joined by the glamorous Lulu (Carole Bouquet), who's having trouble with her violently possessive lover, played by Blanc. The resulting entanglements gradually intermingle to illustrate the proverbial tangled web of life.
This film's verbal humor is a cracking barrage of parry and thrust. The girl talk is especially feisty, with Lulu and Elisabeth wondering what it's like to "come all over the place and orgasm like a man" and Vero adding that she'd settle for knowing what it's like to orgasm as a woman. But there's far more going on here than just comedy. The jokes are Blanc's way of bringing out the drama.
See How They Run is a compassionate film that likes its characters in spite of their many peccadilloes. It's not easy to be happy, asserts director Blanc, and there's nothing wrong with telling a big white lie if it helps everyone get through the day. Husband Bertrand is a master of all this domestic duplicity, having an affair with both his wife's friend Julie and his shy transsexual housekeeper. Bertrand's advice that life is hard and you just have to "ziz-zag your way through it" is at the core of the film.
Rampling's performance is multidimensional -- at once haughty and vulnerable. As Elisabeth, she conceals her anguish at Bertrand's detached attitude toward their marriage and decides that it isn't necessarily a rejection of her. Dutronc plays it with mild amusement -- a man so comfortable with his secretive way of life that he feels no guilt about it. Blanc the actor adds some physical humor, continually searching for wife Lulu's suspected lover and always punishing the wrong man.
Blanc finds the hidden undercurrents in these relationships and pushes them up to the surface. It's testament to his skill as a comic and dramatist that he can use humor to bring to light such deep and human duplicities without ever appearing crude or crass.
