That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

When Disney+ launched on Nov. 12, yes, “The Mandalorian” was front and center on the service — but so was “High School Musical: The Musical – The Series.” The tongue-in-cheek reinvention of the HSM franchise was executive produced by Tim Federle, who had just finished watching Netflix’s true-crime satire “American Vandal” when he got the call from Disney asking for a pitch.

Ultimately, it was the experiences gleaned from this background and an appreciation for mockumentaries like “Vandal” that informed Federle’s pitch for “Hsmtmts” and the eventual success of the show. Here, he...

For starters, the show's name is High School Musical: The Musical, and it will be shot docu-style as the story plays out over the course of 10 episodes. And, if you haven't guessed it already, the students at East High who decide to put on a musical for their Winter theater production don't pick Grease or Guys and Dolls; they're putting on the High School Musical. Confused yet? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will follow the students as they "realize that as much drama happens off-stage as on stage." It’s been an entire decade since the show said goodbye to audiences, but leave it to the nostalgia-laden climate of today’s television fans to want to hang with their New York friends again. Word on the streets of Hollywood suggests that the revival will ignore the original finale in favor of having the characters all together once again. While there’s no exact breakdown of what will happen on the new NBC run, fans can expect the same sharp wit the original is famous for. Like most revivals, its success depends on how many originating cast members sign on to participate,...

What does Mo Collins’ Lorraine, Michael McDonald’s Stewart, and Alex Borstein’s Ms. Swan have in common? They’re all iconic characters hatched from the sketch show “Mad TV.” The comedy series, which ended its run in 2009, is getting the nostalgia revival treatment by the CW. The show, a prerecorded production similar to “Saturday Night Live,” jump-started the careers of a handful of unknown comics and created iconic bits with beloved characters. The revival comes hot on the heels of a 20th anniversary reunion special that reunited many of the series’ familiar faces. The new series, which will feature a brand-new cast, will go into production at the start of July. Los Angeles, like the original series, will be the production’s home base. Tasked with finding the new generation of funny are Julie Ashton and her team. The masterminds over at Walt Disney Studios are gearing up for...

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Marshall, whose adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" bows Dec. 25, will receive the New York Apple Award, "recognizing individuals who have made special contributions to the New York entertainment...

A slate of new comedy pilots, including John Leguizamo’s project at CBS, have casting directors attached, Backstage has learned. Leguizamo’s untitled project with “Family Guy” producer Chris Sheridan will look at the comedian’s life on the Upper West Side and how it contrasts with his roots in the Bronx. The ABC pilot is being cast by Alexis Koczara and Christine Shevchenko. It’s set to shoot in April. CBS’s untitled Tad Quill project will be cast by Julie Ashton. The pilot centers on a recently widowed father of a preteen son who tries to start dating again. It shoots in April. “Jacked Up,” a CBS comedy pilot about a beloved baseball player (“Rules of Engagement” star Patrick Warburton) who has trouble filling his days post-retirement, will be cast by Tracy Lilienfield. Actors looking for a good time should call Tim Payne and Lisa Ystrom. The duo at Payne/Ystrom Casting in Toluca Lake are the CDs for the new ABC pilot “Super Fun Night.” The show was originally set to be a multi-camera sitcom developed for CBS and been cast by Julie Ashton. It didn’t make the cut, though, and instead found new life in a single-camera format at ABC. The plot revolves around three friends, including Rebel Wilson (pictured) of “Bridesmaids” fame, who make a weekly Friday-night appointment to have the best-ever night on the town. It’s being produced by Conan O’Brien with John Riggi signed on as showrunner. It starts shooting in November. Another comedy set to shoot in November is Nick at Nite’s “Instant Mom,” which will be cast by Vickie Thomas. The plot centers on a 20-something party girl—set to be Tia Mowry...

Julie Ashton is having a very busy pilot season. It's unsurprising, since she's pretty much busy all the time, as the casting director of USA's "Psych," Fox's "Bob's Burger," Disney Xd's "Kickin' It," and CBS' "2 Broke Girls" as well as the occasional film project. This week she picked up two more pilots, both CBS comedies. The first is currently titled "Partners," and it focuses on the relationship between two business partners, one straight and one gay. The other is untitled, but it hails from writer/executive producers Greg Malins and Mark Berlanti. It's also about a pair of business partners, both of whom are straight, one of whom is male, and after a health scare he realizes that he's in love with his longtime (female) friend and business associate. Both pilots are set to shoot in late March. These projects are in addition to the two other pilots she's doing: Fox's.

As if the sixth season premier of Psych is not enough to get everyone excited, in a recent conference call with press, creator and executive producer Steve Franks provided a bit more insight into his dream Psych episodes and what he hopes for in the (cross-your fingers!) show’s seventh season.
James Roday alluded to the seasonal finale of Season 6 as having a big cliffhanger. If the series is not picked up for Season 7, would you conclude the show with a movie or something like that?
Steve: It was sort of a natural. When we’re finishing up the season finale, we had something big planned that we didn’t think work well enough and something we sort of saved. And as we looked at the way the story is developing, along the course we found like a really, really cool cliffhanger, and we ended up shooting that as our finale.

Where you've seen her: A 2008 graduate of UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, Behrs has appeared in "American Pie Presents: The Book of Love" and guest-starred on "Castle" and "NCIS: Los Angeles." However, she says it was the Funny or Die videos she and a friend from UCLA made that helped her land the role in CBS's "2 Broke Girls." "I know the casting director saw those before I went in," she says, referring to Julie Ashton. "Nowadays you have to create your own content. Know who you are as an actor, what your type is, and what you're good at, and then get friends together and create. Those videos gave me a lot of opportunities."Now playing: Behrs stars with Kat Dennings ("Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," "Thor") in "2 Broke Girls," a sitcom created by Michael Patrick King ("Sex and the City") and comedian Whitney Cummings about...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.
