In a keynote conversation Tuesday at Copenhagen’s leading international documentary festival Cph:dox, Academy Award winning filmmaker and producer Alex Gibney talked honestly about the winding road of making it in the documentary world, the creative process, and the lessons of life, partly learned from singer-songwriter Paul Simon.
The inspirational talk at the baroque Kunsthal Charlottenborg exhibition space, with moderator Thom Powers, Toronto Film Festival programmer, was a prelude to the festival’s screening of Gibney’s two-part doc “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” which debuted on MGM+ March 17.
“What I learned from Paul was that when he wrote ‘The Sound of Silence,’ he sat alone and words came to him; creativity started to flow, and just like Bob Dylan with ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ [the song] suddenly fit and he felt like a conduit.”
Gibney said letting free associations take over, having an unguarded curiosity and generosity were some...

Disgraced champion cyclist Lance Armstrong revealed how he managed to avoid being caught doing drugs for years during his time as an athlete.
“Well, in a sense, you would foil the system, but what I always said – and I’m not trying to justify anything that I ever said as something I would want to repeat again – but one of the lines was, ‘I’ve been tested 500 times, I’ve never failed a drug test,'” he told comedian Bill Maher on his podcast.
“That’s not a lie. That is the truth. There was no way around the test. When I p—ed in the cup and they tested this p— in the cup, it passed,” Armstrong added. “Now, the reality and the truth of all of this is some of these substances, primarily the one that is the most beneficial, has a four-hour half-life.”

Bethenny Frankel may be an iconic Housewife, but some of her recent moves may have earned her an “asterisk,” as comedian and Bravoholic Michael Rapaport has pointed out.
During the writer and actor strikes, Frankel led the charge against the big studios for exploiting reality personalities. She criticized her former boss, Andy Cohen, and then invited the vilified Vanderpump Rules mistress, Rachel Leviss, to appear on her podcast.
Bethenny Frankel is now the ‘Lance Armstrong of Housewives,’ Michael Rapaport says
Leviss was on board with holding the networks and production accountable, but fans soon pointed out that Frankel was capitalizing on Leviss’s drama.
“I think that her reality reckoning is a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Rapaport said on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast. “I think that she wants her name and her face attached to it. I have been on record calling her the Michael Jordan of Housewives,...

Documentarian Marina Zenovich is adept at exploring the lives of complicated men. From Lance Armstrong to Roman Polanski to Robin Williams, the two-time Emmy winner has tackled subjects who have summited the heights of their professions and endured the humiliating depths as well. Her latest protagonist, former California Gov. Jerry Brown, fits the bill precisely, having done what no other politician has done — lead the country’s most populous and economically vital state over four terms.
But Brown had his failures too. The progressive Democrat fell short three times as a presidential candidate including a contentious bid for White House in 1992 that saw him politically bludgeoned by the more moderate Clintons. With ‘Jerry Brown: The Disrupter,’ which bows tonight on PBS, Zenovich takes the viewer through the California icon’s improbable arc, first elected governor at 36 years old and again at 72 with an Oakland mayor stint in between. Ariel Winter to Stars on Mars: It’s time to blast off.
The Modern Family actress was the second celebrity in two weeks to bow out of the Fox reality show, which has cast celebs like Natasha Leggero, Marshawn Lynch, Adam Rippon, Ronda Rousey and Tallulah Willis to colonize, compete and conquer “Mars” until there is one victorious space invader, who will claim the title of “the brightest star in the galaxy.”
“I came here, I didn’t think I was going to make it past mission one,” the actress said on Monday’s Episode 10. “I’ve overcome a lot of things. I never thought I would rapell down a cliff. Absolutely not. But I loved being on this team. I even enjoyed missions, even hard ones, in a stupid ass suit. But as you know, I love the word fair. I was not mission critical today and I feel like I deserve to go.

Lance Armstrong, 51, was called a hypocrite by social media users after he tweeted about the “fairness of trans athletes in sport” this past weekend.
In 2012, Armstrong’s seven Tour de France titles were taken away after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency discovered he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career. He later admitted to doping during a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Armstrong received a lifetime ban from competing in professional cycling.
The former cyclist is planning to discuss the topic of transgender athletes competing against cisgender athletes on his podcast, The Forward. He shared a clip from the series in which he travels to Caitlyn Jenner‘s home in Malibu, California. The podcast begins on Monday, June 26.
Have we really come to a time and place where spirited debate is not only frowned upon, but feared? Where people’s greatest concern is being fired, shamed or cancelled? As someone all too familiar with this phenomenon,...

Two-thirds of the route to a great documentary is the subject matter - and Alex Holmes certainly knows how to spot it. He previously brought Tracy Edwards against-the-odds yacht race tale to screen in Maiden and he’s alighted on another great fight-amid-adversity story with the career of Greg LeMond.
In recent years, the documentary arena surrounding cycling and the Tour De France has mostly focused on the negative side of the sport, thrust into the spotlight by shamed doping-scandal cyclist Lance Armstrong (Holmes himself previously directed Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story). Here, with the determined but personable Tour De France winner LeMond, the documentarian offers the flipside of that.
The structure of the documentary itself is formulaic but well executed. LeMond appears as a talking head interview against a tranquil blue background, driving his story from his first go at cycling to the most remarkable win of.

It is the most well known cycling event. Even those who have no interest or even understanding of the sport will have heard of the Tour de France. A grueling multi-stage race, the champions will go down as the greats – while its controversies have spawned television documentaries of their own.
All the best online betting sites offer markets for the event and there have been plenty of TV shows and films covering the spectacle over the years. But now Netflix has entered the arena, with Tour de France: Unchained promising a no-holds-barred look at the race and the teams and cyclists involved.
The Greatest Cycling Event in the World
There is a reason why the Tour de France makes for great television. The greatest cyclists in the history of the sport have competed for the famous yellow jersey for almost 120 years. It is also an event that has not escaped its major controversial moments,...

Ariel Winter got off to a rough start on the Fox reality show Stars on Mars. The Modern Family star admitted that her worst fear was saying something embarrassing while on the series, and within her few minutes aboard the faux space station, that fear was realized. When cycling champion Lance Armstrong came aboard, she confused him for the late Neil Armstrong, pioneering astronaut. The good thing about instantly making such a huge fumble, though, was that she could only go up from there.
Now, she might be rising all the way to the top as the next base commander, in charge of leading the crew through 48 hours of trials and at least one emergency mission. An exclusive clip from tonight’s new episodes shows Winter’s fellow crew mates nominating her to take the lead.

When you need someone to work Mission Control and communicate with a dozen celebrities living on Mars, who better than William Shatner? Star Trek’s iconic Capt. James T. Exclusive: Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to The Last Rider, the story of cycling legend Greg LeMond, who came back from a near death experience to win his sport’s greatest race.
LeMond remains the only American man to win the Tour de France, a feat he accomplished three times – in 1986, 1989 and 1990 (Tour victories by Americans Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis were vacated after they admitted using banned performance-enhancing drugs). Remarkably, LeMond’s second and third Tour de France wins came after he was nearly killed in a hunting accident, in which his brother-in-law accidentally blasted him with a shotgun, hitting LeMond with 60 pellets. He lost 65 percent of his blood, but somehow survived.
The documentary directed by Alex Holmes will be released in theaters on June 23.
Greg LeMond races in the Tour du Pont in Washington, DC May 14, 1992.

This week brought the premiere of Andy Samberg's new adult animated comedy series "Digman!" to Comedy Central. The series, which Samberg co-created with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" producer Neil Campbell, follows a formerly great archaeologist named Rip Digman who has since turned into a laughing stock. And in a world where archeologists are considered huge celebrities, that's an unfortunate situation to be in. But with his crew by his side, Digman tries to get back on top, taking whatever scrappy museum job he can to get by, and that results in him meeting quite the impressive ensemble of characters voiced by an amazing array of actors. In fact, one of them is a filmmaker you might be familiar with.
Edgar Wright, the director behind beloved films like "Shaun of the Dead, "Hot Fuzz," and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," was listed among the guest cast members when "Digman!" was announced to the masses.

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.

Surprise! Ashley Olsen is reportedly married to Louis Eisner, as first reported by Page Six and, later, People on Jan. 4. According to Page Six, the 36-year-old fashion designer and 33-year-old artist tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Dec. 28 at a home in Bel Air, CA. Representatives for Olsen did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
A source told the outlet that there were about "50 people or so total" present at the couple's nuptials. Other details of their ceremony have been kept under wraps. Though not much else is known about their relationship, the two have been linked since October 2017.
Considering the former child star is notoriously private, neither Olsen nor Eisner has publicly spoken about their romance, though they have been spotted on date nights and casual outings on several occasions. ‘Fate of a Sport’ From Executive Producer LeBron James Unveils First Trailer Before Tribeca Premiere
“Fate of a Sport,” premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, has unveiled its first trailer exclusively to Variety.
Covering the world of professional lacrosse and one of its most controversial and high-profile stars, Paul Rabil, the film deals in much more than triumph on the pitch — encompassing millions in capital fundraising, talent poaching and lawsuits from legacy athletic clubs, all against the backdrop of a global pandemic.
“Even in the regular lacrosse league, guys still have to have a second job,” a narrator explains in the clip, alluding to the fact that professional lacrosse is nowhere near as well-funded or rewarding for its players on the national stage. So Rabil and his brother Mike decided to break ranks and potentially sacrifice Paul’s decorated career to launch a league of their own (the Premier Lacrosse League).
Directed by Michael Doneger and written by Dan Crane, the project features executive producers LeBron James,...

This review of “Hit the Road” was first published on April 22, 2022, after its New York City opening.
“The cockroach thinks its baby is beautiful,” says the middle-aged father to his 6-year-old.
“Are we cockroaches?” the child asks. After pausing, the father replies, “We are now.”
This exchange, playful on the surface, but heavy with quiet grief, occurs late in “Hit The Road,” the stunning debut feature written and directed by Panahi about a troubled road trip, one involving a young man fleeing Iran for an uncertain future. He’s referred to frequently as a “traveler,” but there’s more to it than that.
The young man is Farid (Amin Simiar). He’s driving to a meeting spot, where masked guides on motorcycles are meant to smuggle him into Turkey. Along for the ride are his mother (Pantea Panahiha), father (Hassan Majooni) and young brother (Rayan Sarlak).

Early on in a family’s drive across northwest Iran, the father, Khosro (Hassan Madjooni), looks out the window at what used to be the largest lake in the Middle East, Lake Urmia. “Years ago, we would swim in it. Now, you can only have a dust bath.” Except for the unflaggingly effervescent younger son (Rayan Sarlak), the family all carry a similar blank experience that at first seems to come from the fatigue of a family road trip gone on too long. But then we deduce, detail by detail, that their worn expressions instead signal resignation, of worries that have no resolution. Hit The Road is an account of family separation from the older son, 20-year old Farid (Amin Simiar), who has to flee across the Turkish border for an offense for which he was arrested and released on a bail. We’re never told what Farid’s offense was,...

Though it was never officially on the market, a lavish Los Angeles estate has sold for a whopping $70 million — one of the priciest California home sales of 2021 — to Abel Tesfaye, the Canadian music superstar better known as The Weeknd. As was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, the “Blinding Lights” crooner now holds the deed to a roughly 33,000-square-foot megamansion in prime lower Bel Air — a substantial upsize from his previous home in Hidden Hills, which was sold to Madonna in April for $19.3 million.

Narrator of key moments in cycling since the mid-70s, Liggett’s story includes his controversial support of Lance Armstrong
Here is a documentary of pretty niche interest, it has to be said: the life and times of Tour de France commentator Phil Liggett, who was a ubiquitous fixture on TV coverage of the event in English-speaking countries for years. Well, Liggett appears to be an interesting character, if John Craven looked a bit like Terence Stamp and held forth with a touch of Alan Partridge, but with a runtime of a shade under two hours, this is pushing it a bit.
Born on the Wirral, and currently residing with his wife Trish in a game reserve in South Africa where he helps with efforts to protect rhinos from poachers, Liggett is one of those old-school sports broadcasters – like John Motson or Clive Everton – whose natural communication skills and unswerving...

In addition, they envision that the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital will serve as a model to other communities who want to provide the highest quality of care to all their children, regardless of their ability to pay.

Kid Rock expected a wild ride with Robin Williams that December week in 2007, and he wasn’t disappointed. Williams, the son of a Navy man, had already been to Afghanistan twice to boost troop morale for the Uso; this time he was joined by Rock. The two had met a few months earlier, when Williams caught one of Rock’s shows and, backstage afterward, went off on a characteristically inspired buckshot improv of Rock’s most salacious lyrics. Their adventures...

Rarely in recent memory has a TV show been so propitiously timed as “The Last Dance.” The 10-episode documentary series about the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls premiered in May, weeks after the coronavirus pandemic caused the shutdown of all major live sports events, leaving fans bereft.
Into that void slipped “The Last Dance,” turning five straight Sunday nights into must-see events for large swathes of audiences quarantined at home. Over the course of its run, “The Last Dance” averaged 5.6 million viewers. And in seizing the moment, it’s becoming emblematic of a wave in sports documentary programming that has been building for years.
“It’s a funny time to celebrate any project and pat yourselves on the back, but I will say, I think it was the perfect project at a really specific point in time in our history,” says Libby Geist, vice president & executive producer, ESPN Films and Original Content.

Coronavirus stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted television viewing habits, driving up consumption of just about every genre of programming, including documentary. The resulting huge audience numbers and media attention generated by Tiger King and The Last Dance could give those nonfiction series a leg-up as Emmy voters prepare to mark their nomination ballots.
Tiger King, the seven-part series on “murder, mayhem and madness” in the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo operators, dropped on Netflix March 20, just as lockdown orders were being imposed across much of the U.S. Director Eric Goode is the first to say people moored in their homes, TV remote in hand, helped turn the series into a cultural phenomenon.
“I do think we all must assume that that’s part of it,” Goode states. “For sure.”

In ESPN’s hit documentary series The Last Dance, NBA legend Michael Jordan is described as “the ultimate sports alpha male.” True, perhaps. But he faces some competition for that title from the subject of another ESPN documentary, Lance Armstrong.
“To me, Lance was very alpha,” observes director Marina Zenovich, who spent two years off and on with Armstrong for her film Lance. Comparing Jordan and Armstrong, she marvels, “You’re talking about people from another planet. They’re not normal humans and they are incredibly strong and ferocious and willful and amazing athletes.”
Jordan describes his mentality as “go out and win at any cost,” but he meant that within the confines of the rules. Armstrong, on the other hand…well, the cyclist steered his bike down a different path.
Zenovich’s film, which is now contending for Emmy nominations, comes seven years after Armstrong finally admitted what he...
