The opening credits of the series premiere of Stargate Universe show the vast expanse of space as a ship jumps out of Ftl and begins to glide closer to our screens. An orchestra of sounds play in the background with an almost menacing and forboding undertone. It doesn't take long before it's crystal clear that the show you are about to watch bears little resemblance to its predecessors. We're taken inside the ship where we see corridor after corridor coming to life, in much the same manner as that of the series premiere of Stargate Atlantis. As the camera pans from deck to deck, and lights spring to life, one thing becomes painfully clear: the ship is old, very old. And suddenly I have to remind myself that I'm not watching Battlestar Galactica. The music, even the look of the ship, instantly take me back there. I was prepared for this, »

Former Doctor Who co-star Billie Piper is to star in a new drama for BBC One, Kay Mellor's adaptation of her stage play A Passionate Woman, it has been announced. The drama will also star Sue Johnston, Alun Armstrong and Frances Barber and tell the story of a young wife and mother (Piper) in 1950s Britain who falls in love with her Polish neighbour - with the affair imploding 30 years later on her son's wedding day. Billie Piper has been confirmed to star in forthcoming BBC One drama A Passionate Woman. The Doctor Who actress will appear alongside Sue Johnston, Alun Armstrong and Frances Barber in the Kay Mellor-penned romance. Piper will play Betty, a young wife who falls in love with Polish neighbour Alex Crazenovski (Theo James) in the 1950s. Two decades later her affair will be exposed on her son Mark's (Andrew Lee Potts) wedding day. Johnston is cast as Betty in the 1980s, while Armstrong will portray her devoted but dull husband Donald. The younger version of Donald will be played by Armstrong's real-life son Joe. The BBC has commissioned a new four-part legal drama, it has announced. Garrow's Law, based on the life of pioneering barrister William Garrow, will star Andrew Buchan, Alun Armstrong and Lyndsey Marshall. The series will follow real legal cases from the late 18th century, with each hour-long episode investigating a case sourced from the Old Bailey of Georgian London, where the drama is set. Sci Fi Channel has rounded out its cast of the drama-adventure series, Sgu: Stargate Universe, with an array of celebrity guest stars, set to make appearances throughout the season including, Richard Dean Anderson, Christopher McDonald, Grammy nominated recording artist, Janelle Mone, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Gary Jones and Carlo Rota.
The new original one-hour series stars Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-Na. Produced by MGM Television, the series is currently in production in Vancouver and is set to premiere on Sci Fi in October 2009 with a special two-hour episode.
Edgier and younger in tone, Sgu will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime 'Stargate' fans and first-time viewers alike. The two-part premiere of Universe is being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Sg-1) and lensed by Rohn Schmidt (The Shield, The Mist). The series also stars Alaina Huffman, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith. »
