For his second feature film—and first full collaboration with co-writer/producer/mentor Dario Argento—writer-director Michele Soavi unleashes a “mind-blowing” (Bloody Disgusting), “breathtaking” (Slant), “masterwork” (DVD Drive-In), now in Uhd for the first time ever: In a Gothic cathedral built on the mass grave of a Teutonic purge, an ancient discovery by the new librarian will release an unholy maelstrom of madness, violence, and demonic vengeance. Tomas Arana (The Sect), Feodor Chaliapin (Inferno), Hugh Quarshie (Nightbreed), Barbara Cupisti (Cemetery Man), and Asia Argento co-star in this Italian horror milestone co-written by Franco Ferrini (Phenomena), with a Soavi-approved 4K scan from the original negative and over three hours of special features—including new interviews with Soavi and Argento.
The Church is available on 4K Uhd on April 30.

Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores (“Mediterraneo”) is back behind the camera on “Napoli – New York,” a period immigration drama based on a story written for the screen by Federico Fellini.
Fellini co-wrote the tale of two Neapolitan kids who embark on a ship to New York to escape Italy’s early postwar poverty with his frequent collaborator Tullio Pinelli, a writer on the Italian maestro’s “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2,” as well as other titles.
Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino stars as the chief officer of the ship which the two kids, named Carmine and Celestina, manage to board surreptitiously in the port of Naples, becoming clandestine passengers. The youngsters are on a mission to reach the U.S. where they dream of living with Celestina’s sister, who emigrated to New York two years earlier. Newcomers Dea Lanzaro e Antonio Guerra play the kids. (See first-look image above of Favino with the kids and Salvatores.

If your dad was Mario Bava, master of light and originator of the giallo film as we know it, you’d have a hard time following in his footsteps too; yet that is precisely what Lamberto Bava chose to do. He made some good ones right out of the gate: Macabre (1980) and A Blade in the Dark (’83) have their fans, but it was the fantastic Demons (’85) that brought him international attention. One lackluster sequel later and he was more or less relegated to the sidelines, where he found solace in Italian TV; he signed a four picture deal for a series of films under the umbrella High Tension, and the first one out of the gate was The Prince of Terror (’88), which was deemed too gruesome and shelved until 1999. I can understand why, because it does contain several gory set pieces, implied rape, and strong language. Oh, and it’s also insane and entertainingly weird.

It’s difficult to be scared of what you don’t believe in. Michael King, a documentary filmmaker whose wife has just died, has no belief in an afterlife and thus feels no fear when it comes to exploring the supernatural. He’s all too willing to tempt dark paranormal forces during the making of his latest film, and he’ll learn the hard way that supernatural forces not only exist, but are capable of great evil.
Anchor Bay Films’ upcoming horror movie The Possession of Michael King will be adding some paranormal scares to the summer.

Chicago – When I walked out of my screening for 2013’s “Romeo and Juliet” with Hailee Steinfeld (Oscar nominated for “True Grit”) and London’s Douglas Booth (previously unknown to the U.S.), I had to remember that not everyone’s seen this story in one way or another.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
So, I immediately polled four teenage girls. Batting away their butterflies and seeing through the hearts glossing over their eyes, they unanimously loved it, thought Booth was so very dreamy and went home with a new outlook on love – probably that love conquers all. For their modern-day version, they’d probably even give up texting for 12 whole days if it meant they couldn’t be with their boy crush.

Anchor Bay Films is hard at work in France, having just acquired the rights to the David Jung-directed The Possession of Michael King at Cannes. The feature directorial debut of Jung, the thriller follows a widower who delves into the occult following the death of his wife.
Starring Dale Dickey, Tomas Arana, Ella Anderson, and Julie McNiven, the Gold Circle Films production is yet another film that seeks to keep the “possession” sub-genre alive and well.
Evp of Acquisitions Kevin Kasha has clearly noticed their popularity, stating “Audiences love possession films, and this one is filled with all the thrills they’re known for.”
This, of course, says nothing about the incredibly common and increasingly frustrating ”The Haunting/Possession of…” trend, but personal quibbles aside, it’s always great to see horror represented and making headway at Cannes.

Remember that new movie version of "Romeo and Juliet" that "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld was attached to? Yeah, we had completely forgotten about it, too, but now there's a trailer to jog our memories.
Directed by Carlo Carlei and starring Douglas Booth as Romeo, this newfangled "R&J" looks decidedly ... calmer than Baz Luhrmann's game-changing 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. But hey, it's, you know, a pretty good script by a fella named Bill Shakespeare, if we remember correctly, and it's nice to see Steinfeld in a more girly-girl role as compared to her terrific tomboyish turn in "True Grit."
The supporting cast is pretty great, too, with Kodi Smit-McPhee as Benvolio, Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, Natascha McElhone as Lady Capulet, Lesley Manville as the Nurse, Ed Westwick as Tybalt, Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, Christian Cooke as Mercutio, Tomas Arana as Lord Montague, Laura Morante as Lady Montague,...

Romeo and Juliet: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth Starring Lol‘s Douglas Booth and True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld, a new version of Romeo and Juliet is currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. Partly financed by Austrian design house Swarovski, this latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s love story was written by Academy Award winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and directed by Carlo Carlei. A Best New Director David di Donatello nominee for The Flight of the Innocent (1993), Carlei’s previous English-language foray, the Matthew Modine vehicle Fluke, was a major box-office flop in 1995. In recent years, Carlei has worked on Italian television; his most recent TV movie was a remake of Roberto Rossellini’s Il General della Rovere (2011), starring Pierfrancesco Favino in the old Vittorio De Sica role. According to the Los Angeles Times blog 24 Frames, producer Ileen Maisel wants “every teenager in the world to come see” Romeo and Juliet.

Just when you thought the ensemble romance had reached its pinnacle with "New Year's Eve," the genre is being revitalized by revisiting a classic.
"Homeland" star Damian Lewis has been cast as Lord Capulet in "Downton Abbey" writer Julian Fellowes' adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet," which began filming in Italy late last month with youngsters Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
And Lewis isn't the only big name on the bill; the list of newly-cast leads reads like a longer list of Hollywood who's who. Joining are Natasha McElhone (Lady Capulet), Stellan Skarsgard (Prince of Verona), Paul Giamatti (Friar Laurence), Tomas Arana (Lord Montague), Laura Morante (Lady Montague), Lesley Manville (The Nurse), Christian Cooke (Mercutio) and Leon Vitali (Apothecary).
While Fellowes realizes that his idea to adapt the Shakespeare classic may not be an original one, he's excited to do a more traditional rendering of the work.

Fellowes has tightened the play to fit into a standard two-hour feature running time, but reportedly did very little re-writing. Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth play the doomed lovers.
Also joining the cast are Stellan Skarsgard (Prince of Verona), Lesley Manville (The Nurse), Christian Cooke (Mercutio), Tomas Arana (Lord Montague), Laura Morante (Lady Montague) and Leon Vitali (Apothecary).
They join the already announced Paul Giamatti (Friar Laurence), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Benvolio) and Ed Westwick (Tybalt). Filming began ten days ago in Rome, Mantua and Siena in Italy.
