There's something to be said for tradition. Perhaps no one understands that better than unofficial town crier Tony Appleton, who stood on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital to say, "We welcome with humble duty the new baby of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The princess is fourth in line to the throne." Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their second child—and first daughter—Saturday morning in London. "The baby weighs 8 lbs., 3 oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth," Kensington Palace said in a statement, adding, "Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well." In addition to releasing an...

Nothing like tradition! Longtime Town Crier Tony Appleton was on the scene outside of St. Mary's Hospital in London on Saturday, May 2, to make his special announcement that Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed a new baby girl. At 11:19 a.m. local time in the UK, the 80-year-old toastmaster, who is the president of the Guild of International Millennium Town Criers, announced the birth of the princess and, in the traditional cry, called on locals to come outside and "wet the baby's head," or toast to [...]...

Just when you thought you the incessant royal baby coverage was over, the "Colbert Report" pulls viewers back in. With his tri-corner hat and elaborate finery, town crier Tony Appleton certainly looked official when he stood before the hundreds of well-wishers gathered outside St. Mary's Hospital on Monday, July 22, and read the news of the royal baby's birth from an old-fashioned scroll. But as he revealed to various media outlets on Tuesday, he was there of his own volition and has no connection to Kate Middleton, Prince William, or anyone else in the royal family -- except that he's a fan. "I was not invited," [...]...

Hear ye, hear ye: It was all a joke! The British do love royal pomp and circumstance, but the seemingly official town crier who stepped forth to deliver the news outside of St. Mary's Hospital in London Tuesday that the Duchess of Cambridge had delivered a son was nothing of the kind - not an official town crier, that is. The red-coated, tri-cornered hat-wearing loud mouth has admitted he's a fake - a crier in Romford, a commuter town just east of London, and in Bury St. Edmunds, a market town in southeastern England who has nothing to do with Buckingham Palace.

It all went off without a hitch. Despite a last-minute change regarding the timing of the birth announcement - a press release went out before the signed bulletin left the hospital - the arrival of the royal baby proceeded according to plan Tuesday. After the official announcement from Kensington Palace at 8:31 p.m. London time, cheers were heard spontaneously breaking out among the crowd gathered around the hospital. Soon after, Prince William and Kate's press secretary Ed Perkins came down the hospital steps and handed the official birth notice off. With the notice encased in a red leather folder...
