Taos, New Mexico — Snow and frigid temperatures didn't stop thousands of screaming teenagers from crowding into the Washington Coliseum in the nation's capital for the Beatles first live concert on American soil.
And not having a flash didn't stop photographer Mike Mitchell, then just 18 years old, from using his unrestricted access to document that historic February night in 1964 using only the dim light in the arena.
Ghostly shadows and streams of light filled some negatives. With the help of modern technology and close to 1,000 hours in front of the computer screen, Mitchell was able to peel back decades of grunge and transform those old negatives into a rare, artful look at one of pop culture's defining moments.

The Beatles are a band destined to be remembered in black and white. Dressed in their dark fitted suits, performing behind perfectly monochromatic instruments, John, Paul, George and Ringo are best captured in two very specific segments of the color spectrum.
We haven't asked him, but we think photographer Mike Mitchell would agree. He's responsible for a series of black-and-white snapshots of the Beatles taken during a memorable Washington, D.C. performance in 1964. The images were captured two days before their iconic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, when Mitchell was a mere 18-year-old, press-pass wielding photographer.
The series of rare photos, taken without a flash, are beautifully grainy portraits of the band's early days. Dripping with light, they encapsulate the crisp, energetic tone of a day nearly five decades ago. “You cannot forget 8,000 screaming girls,” Mitchell recounted in an interview with Reuters. “It was like the birth of my generation.

You sure wouldn’t know that the world is in an economic crisis by looking at the prices that have been paid recently for original art. Both Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses, who’s recent auctions collectively tallied $266,591,000, established record sale prices for pieces of art including the most expensive work ever sold at auction, Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ which garnered a whopping $120 million!
Fans of comic art began to scream themselves when Roy Lichtenstein’s painting, ‘Sleeping Girl,’ sold for $45 million, a record price for any of his works. Lichtenstein is often criticized by comic art enthusiasts for not having credited the long list of comic artists whose work he used as subject matter for his paintings. Comparisons of ‘Sleeping Girl’ and the Tony Abruzzo panel which it is derived from, as well as dozens of other comparisons, can be seen here. David Barsalou deconstructs Lichtenstein...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Paul Feig is nothing if not open. As the author of two wonderfully observed memoirs - "Kick Me," covering his childhood and "Superstud" chronicling his twenties, with his TV series "Freaks and Geeks" to semi-autobiographically fill in the rest of his early years -- he's let audiences grow up with him. With sharp, self-deprecating wit and warmth, he's been the best teller of his own story, one that's led him from an adolescence in Michigan where a respite from constant teasing in junior high was making TV commercials for his father's hardware store before he eventually took center stage himself to the slings and arrows of being a standup comedian and actor. However, partly out of his considerable humility and just as likely because it would ruin some of his schtick, the one area of his life that hasn't been as nearly well-documented has been the success he's found as a director.
