Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 7 – “VII.”
Written by Michael Angeli
Directed by Marc Munden
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
It’s amazing to see the differences between an exposition-heavy episode of Black Sails in its seventh episode and an exposition-heavy episode in its second or third. By now, most of the characters are fleshed out so that even if you might not be invested in them and their conflicts, their intentions are clear. The problem with the information dumps earlier in the season were mainly that the there wasn’t much in the way of action and thus the stakes were ambiguous. Now that we’ve seen plenty of people die along the way, the stakes couldn’t be more evident, making the drama surrounding Flint’s crazed mission both compelling and exciting.
That’s not to say that the exposition here is terribly interesting, as “VII.” functions much...

Title: "There Is Another Sky"
Writer: Michael Angeli
Director: Michael Nankin
Story: With the most critical stage-setting seemingly out of the way, "Caprica" returns this week with something the previous four episodes had been lacking: focus. There's Daniel Graystone, who is in some hot water with his company after his public promise to demonetize holoband technology leads the board of directors to revolt. That is until he introduces a remarkable new direction to take the business in. Meanwhile, Joseph Adama attempts to reconnect with Willy after learning some troubling things about his son. The senior Adama eventually comes to realize that letting go will be his most difficult, yet most important, first step. And finally, we spend quite a bit of time in V-World with Tamara Adama (still Adams). It's the most we've seen of the Internet-like virtual environment since the pilot episode, and much more is learned about the way things work there.

Title: "The Reins of a Waterfall"
Writer: Michael Angeli
Director: Ron D. Moore
Story: "Caprica" opens this week on the heels of Amanda Graystone's (Paula Malcomson) shocking, yet ironically untrue, public revelation of her daughter Zoe's (Alessandra Torresani) participation in the terrorist bombing of the Mag-Lev train. Like last week's post-pilot premiere, "Reins" is all over the character map, giving us brief glimpses into the assortment of developing events that grew out of the incident. The Graystones are in the media doghouse, the police continue to hound them, Zoe's friend Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) is still being courted for information about Zoe by the school headmistress and secret member of The Soldiers of the One, and the Adamas remain players in Caprica's criminal underworld. A new player joins the party, in the form of popular talk show host Baxter Sarno (Patton Oswalt), and he's not a fan of the Graystone revelations.

Below is an interview with Michael Taylor, the writer of Friday's "Battlestar Galactica" episode, "Islanded in a Stream of Stars." Typically the writer of a "Battlestar" episode goes to the show's set when that episode is filmed, however, at the time, Taylor was busy with "Virtuality," a Fox pilot he co-wrote with "Battlestar's" Ron Moore. Michael Angeli, another "Battlestar" writer, went to the set in Taylor's place. So the interview below contains some thoughts from Angeli as well. Read on to learn how, in my review, I got one fact about "Islanded" spectacularly wrong (in "Islanded," Adama was not reading...

Below is an interview with Jane Espenson, who wrote "Deadlock," Friday's episode of "Battlestar Galactica." I've also posted a few of my thoughts of my own below that Q&A. This installment of the "Battlestar" Q&A's has an Extra Special Bonus Attraction. I asked Espenson some questions, and so did Star-Ledger critic Alan Sepinwall. Both sets of questions are below. There's lots more info on this site about "Battlestar Galactica": Look here for an interview with Ryan Mottesheard and Espenson regarding "No Exit," the Feb. 13 episode. I have to join the huge pool of critics and viewers alike who have done nothing but sung praises over the last two episodes of "Battlestar Galactica." "The Oath" and "Blood on the Scales" were written by Mark Verheiden and Michael Angeli, two powerful writers on just about any series they've ever worked on, but two men who really showed what their skills were made of. They took characters we knew and love, and turned it all upside down, creating the ultimate battle where there really was no going back, no reset buttons, no amnesty. It's the kind of television I have waited so long for -- where people make bold decisions and have to face the ramifications, whether good or bad, of those actions. In these two episodes, Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) is tired of the alliance with the ...

What do you think of Tom Zarek? There's been a spirited debate in the comment area of last Friday's post on "Blood on the Scales," the most recent episode of "Battlestar Galactica." That piece contains an interview with Michael Angeli, who wrote the episode, and some analysis of the episode from me. Readers have continued to weigh in with their own takes on the episode, which continued the tense events that began in "The Oath." Also commenting on that post: Actor Richard Hatch, who plays Tom Zarek on the show. I've been able to confirm that it is indeed Hatch...

Chicago – “Battlestar Galactica” returns to the Sci-Fi Channel on January 16th, 2009, at 9pm Cst for the final arc of episodes of the beloved series. There’s still time to catch up with season 4.0 before the mid-season premiere of 4.5 in an excellent TV set from Universal. The “Battlestar Galactica” TV packages have been some of the most critically lauded and popular of the format and the new release is no exception.
With perfect video and audio and exhaustive special features, the only negative thing that can possibly be said about “Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.0” is that you’ll eventually have to replace it with a Blu-Ray set. Universal has revealed that “BSG” seasons will be released on the HD format as soon as later this year.

Daniel Radcliffe has shared a little bit about himself with fans, creating awareness of a rather common neurological condition. Radcliffe, the star of the Harry Potter movie franchise, says he suffers from dyspraxia, a condition that among other things makes it difficult for him to tie his own shoes. But the actor didn't let the condition defeat him. Instead, it's what helped him become an actor. Dyspraxia made it difficult for him to excel at school, and he was able to use drama and acting as an outlet. It's not exactly a series pickup, but things are looking good for the upcoming "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica." The SciFi Channel has ordered two more scripts on top of the pilot, according to Maureen Ryan of The Chicago Tribune. The scripts are being written by Michael Angeli and Mark Verheiden, both former writers on Bsg, as well as former writers assistant Ryan Mottesheard. Some sources close to the show have told SyFy Portal in the past that they feel "Caprica" should actually launch as a series instead of a backdoor pilot, simply because the pilot -- which was written by executive producer Ronald D. Moore and Remi Aubuchon -- serves more as a setup for a series instead of being a standalone story that could lead to further episodes as successful backdoor pilots have done ...

USA Network is taking a second look at Organized Medicine. The cable network is redeveloping the project about a Mafia-run hospital scam that had been in the development pipeline at USA for more than 18 months as a miniseries. USA confirmed the project is now being redeveloped as a pilot for a drama series, to be penned this time around by Michael Angeli (NBC's Medium). If the pilot moves forward, Angeli will serve as an executive producer along with Ken Aguado, who has been involved with the project from the beginning.
