A giant brain the size of a Volkswagen! Ancient bog people who explode when they masturbate! Self-effacing jokes about Canada’s place in the world! “Rumours” might abandon the silent film aesthetic that has come to define Guy Maddin’s singular brand of absurdism, but not even the complete absence of exclamatory title cards is enough to suggest that this ridiculous comedy of manners could have — or would have — been made by anybody else.
Reuniting with co-directors Evan and Galen Johnson for their first proper feature since “The Forbidden Room” in 2015, the pride of Winnipeg returns to the big screen with a movie that shakes up his style without sacrificing any of its silliness, a feat made all the more impressive by the caliber of the actors that Maddin and co. have wrangled to carry it.

Seven world leaders – including Charles Dance’s dozy US president – are trapped in a forest in this amusing but bizarre apocalyptic comedy
Cate Blanchett has supplied the strangest moment of this year’s Cannes film festival; for Brits of a certain age, anyway. Her character reverently invokes the name of the late Roy Jenkins, Labour grandee and former chancellor of both the exchequer and Oxford University. Blanchett plays a fictional German chancellor called Hilda Ortmann who mentions Jenkins as the first president of the European Commission allowed to attend a G7 summit Perhaps in her next film Blanchett can do a big speech about Peter Shore.
Rumours is an amusing drawing-room absurdist comedy, co-written and directed by Canadian film-maker Guy Maddin with his longtime collaborators, the brothers Evan and Galen Johnson. The title is inspired by the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album, because of the emotional crises that are...

Remember the communiqué from the Rambouillet G7 conference back in 1975? Of course they do. Tramping through a wooded estate somewhere in Germany, pursued by the zombie remains of Iron Age chieftains recently exhumed from the grounds of the nearby stately home, the leaders of the world’s richest democracies recite it by heart. What could be more stirring than a well-rounded public announcement that sounds grand, but doesn’t commit anyone to doing anything? A successful joint statement is a work of art.
These leaders – the chancellor of Germany (Cate Blanchett), the prime ministers of the UK, Japan and Canada, and the presidents of the United States, Italy and France – clearly think they are masters of that art in Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson’s Rumours. Surges of orchestral music as they wave in...

World leaders at a G7 conference politely bicker, copulate in the bushes and work on wafty, content-free speeches while a worldwide apocalypse commences — politicians, they’re just like us! — in collaborating Canadian directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson’s frequently hilarious latest feature.
Although they’ve kept busy with a steady stream of shorts, the trio haven’t made a feature with actors since the fantastical The Forbidden Room from 2015. With a proper beginning, middle and end, and barely any tributes to silent cinema or interactive tricksiness, Rumours may arguably be Maddin’s most conventional film ever, or at least since The Saddest Music in the World (2003). That is, if you can call a film conventional that’s got furiously masturbating bog zombies, a giant brain the size of a hatchback, and an AI chatbot that catfishes pedophiles. All the same, it’s a hoot, even if the energy flags in the middle.

Cate Blanchett says political satire ‘Rumours’ "isn’t trying to be an important film with a message”
Cate Blanchett says Cannes title Rumours, a political satire surrounding a G7 summit, “isn’t trying to be an important film with a message”.
While speaking at the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film, which is playing out of competition, the Australian actor said: “I think one feels the most mad in the present day and you try and make sense of what is happening because it is completely bewildering and absurd the situations we as a species have found ourselves in and have willingly put ourselves in.

Depending on who you talk to, the world is either in crisis, on fire, at war and/or simply lurching toward a frankly deserved final judgment. So what can be done to save it? Why, a carefully worded provisional statement, of course, from the global leaders currently in possession of both the gas canister and the lit match, but not a surfeit of great ideas for the future. The ineffectiveness of rhetorical politics and symbolic diplomacy — best represented by the Group of Seven, the intergovernmental forum keen on expensive meetings that could have been emails — is kookily but ruthlessly skewered in “Rumours,” a wildly entertaining shaggy-dog satire that sees a stuffy G7 summit devolve into a murky, muddy and strangely isolated zombie apocalypse.
As comedy subgenres go, political satire can often veer closer to the wryly clever than the baldly hilarious. But “Rumours” — the third feature collaboration between veteran Canadian...

Cate Blanchett’s new film “Rumours” took its name from the iconic Fleetwood Mac album, it was revealed on Sunday at a Cannes Film Festival press conference.
The dark comedy, directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, follows a group of world leaders who meet at the G7 — a political and economic meeting of the minds between Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States — but get lost in the woods while trying to compose a joint statement. Debauchery ensues, and there are romantic connections between a few of the politicians.
“I did confirm something with Galen last night, and it’s weird that it never came up in rehearsal, which is: ‘Why the hell is this movie called Rumours?'” Blanchett said at the presser. “And my husband had said, ‘Is that after the Fleetwood Mac album?’ And you said, ‘Yes it was.

Cate Blanchett blew kisses to the Cannes Film Festival audience as her new film, “Rumours,” earned a four-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night.
The crowd welcomed the film’s dark humor, laughing throughout the entirety of the late-night screening. While some of the auditorium emptied out while the credits rolled, the majority of filmgoers waited patiently to pay their respects to the film’s stars. Blanchett’s “Rumours” co-star Alicia Vikander was notably not in attendance.
The film’s trio of directors — Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson — seemed surprised by Cannes’ relatively new tradition of handing the filmmaker(s) a microphone for post-screening remarks. They made a speech together after the applause wrapped, thanking the audience and quoting their own film by saying “it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

The Cannes Film Festival launches auteur filmmakers, and the best among them have known scenes of triumph at the iconic French seaside festival.
But not Guy Maddin, who for all his accolades as an original and idiosyncratic auteur prized for titles like The Forbidden Room and The Saddest Music in the World, has never — until now, that is — brought a film to the Croisette.
It took Maddin and co-directors Evan and Galen Johnson casting Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander and getting the backing of executive producer Ari Aster to get their absurdist political satire Rumours to the Cannes red carpet.
“Once we got some legitimate Oscar-winning movie stars, and other movie stars that are amazing, all of a sudden Cannes cleaned its glasses off for a closer look,” Maddin tells The Hollywood Reporter of the stars aligning ahead of a May 19 world premiere at the Lumière theater. Rumours...

Jericho Ridge
A dark, freezing night. A lonely sheriff’s station. Incidents elsewhere taking the other officers way, and just one woman, nursing a broken leg, left to hold the fort. Unfortunately for her, there’s something inside the station that some very bad people want to get their hands on, and she’s in the way. Survival thriller Jericho Ridge is opening in UK cinemas on Thursday, and it’s going to deliver some serious action.
In March, when it screened at the Glasgow Film Festival, I met up with director Will Gilbey and star Chris Reilly to discuss it, but we all knew from the start that it would be a challenging interview. There’s very little we could actually say about the story without giving things away. It was a few dramatic twists and turns, but there’s very little embellishment. It is, I suggest, a simple story,...

Nikki Amuka-Bird gives a powerful performance as a gritty deputy defending her remote sheriff’s office from armed invaders
There’s an old-timey charm about this, a (mostly) one-location action movie in the tradition of Rio Bravo, or its sort-of remake Assault on Precinct 13. Partly it’s because of the remote mountainous setting in an unnamed state, the log cabin sheriff’s office, the trucks, twangy accents and mentions of second amendment nuts; and partly because of the core device of having a heroic figure – in this case, Deputy Tabby Temple (Nikki Amuka-Bird) – defending the fort against armed invaders. But the joke’s on us because nearly the whole thing was shot in Kosovo and most of the cast is British, as is writer-director Will Gilbey, who is making his feature directorial debut after a long apprenticeship as an editor, writer and second-unit dogsbody on the distinctly estuary-accented Rise of the Footsoldier...

Exclusive: Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster, an exec producer on upcoming Cannes ensemble comedy Rumours, has called the film “stoopid and hilarious and wonderful” as the production reveals an official first look.
Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander star with Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira and Zlatko Burić star in the movie that follows seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Some sites have been reporting the provisional statement is about the climate crisis, which we hear is inaccurate.
The intriguing official first image (above) shows Roy Dupuis as the Prime Minister of Canada and Alicia Vikander as the President of the European Commission. The other roles are being kept under wraps.

Some films tell you what they’re going to be before they’ve even begun. With titles in a plump, mustard-coloured psychedelic font, with squared shots of a desolate stretch of road and a lonely sheriff’s station, Jericho Ridge immediately captures the atmosphere of a gritty Seventies thriller, promising something edgy and uncomfortable that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Unlike most works with such pretensions, it succeeds.
This is an exercise in economic filmmaking. Very little of it takes place outside the central location, and for much of the running time there’s only one character onscreen. In almost every scene, Deputy Tabby Temple (Nikki Amuka-Bird) is an awesome presence, holding the film together at the same time as she holds the fort. Walking with a crutch, she’s the one who has been left behind whilst her colleagues go out to answer calls, but...

What’s Good: “Knock at the Cabin” offers several commendable aspects that contribute to its appeal. The film adeptly weaves a tapestry of suspense and psychological tension, creating an unconventional blend of thriller and apocalyptic drama. The unique premise of strangers compelling a family to make a sacrifice adds layers of complexity to the story, introducing thought-provoking moral dilemmas. Dave Bautista delivers a standout performance as Leonard, infusing the character with a compelling mix of vulnerability and strength, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Based on the book ‘The Cabin at the End of the World’, there was little bit of controversy when Knock at the Cabin was released without any information to say this was based on the book or its author Paul Tremblay. But, this may have actually worked out okay for the author, as I’m sure there were many people like myself who finally got around to checking out the book after seeing the trailer. And after finishing the book and very much enjoying it, I was ready to watch the movie.

Knock at the Cabin, the latest thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan (you can read our review Here), was given a theatrical release on February 3rd, and a PVOD release followed just two and a half weeks later. Today, Universal Home Entertainment has given the film its physical media release – you can pick up a copy of the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, or DVD on Amazon – and to promote this release, they have dropped a batch of behind-the-scenes featurettes online. Those featurettes can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The latest taut horror-thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, Knock at the Cabin has arrived on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. While there’s no audio commentary, the home video releases include four making-of featurettes: “Choosing Wisely: Behind the Scenes of Knock at the Cabin,” “Tools of the Apocalypse,” “Drawing a Picture,” and “Kristen Cui Shines a Light.”
Totalling about 35 minutes, these extras feature insight from Shyamalan, actors Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn, Rupert Grint, and Kristen Cui, and several key crew members.
Here are seven things I learned from the Knock at the Cabin Blu-ray…
1. Knock at the Cabin came to Shyamalan as a producing opportunity.
Shyamalan originally received the Knock at the Cabin script by Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman as a producing opportunity via his Blinding Edge Pictures before deciding to work on the screenplay and board the project as director.

Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.
So, if you want to refresh your memory so you’re ready to catch all of The Fallen Sun’s cheeky references, or even if you’re new to the world of Luther and want to find out how we got to this point, here’s a handy primer on the story so far…

Knock at the Cabin (2023).The categorical strictures of genre filmmaking have always done a disservice to M. Night Shyamalan. The director’s films are built upwards from otherwise earthbound drama, with their supernatural, comic-book tropes, and general suspense working as auxiliary elements rather than storytelling engines. This “formula”—a term Shyamalan justly bristles at—yields consistently fascinating results, deriving emotional resolve from narrative dissonance. This can be seen in everything from Unbreakable (2000) to The Happening (2008), which eschew conventional climaxes for parting acknowledgements of their characters’ virtues and weaknesses: the former film culminates with Bruce Willis’s technically invincible, reluctant hero, David Dunne, encountering his one debility, water, and is forced to rely on those he was initially saving to then save him, before the villain can be truly apprehended. It’s far from a perfect victory; instead, it’s a sober acceptance of responsibility, with action, violence, superficial excitement all secondary.

It’s easy to make fun of the lowlights of M. Night Shyamalan’s filmography, but his best movies are excellent genre thrillers that remain entertaining even after you know the twist. The director’s biggest hits were original ideas. But he nearly got behind the camera for an installment of a beloved franchise. In an interview promoting Shyamalan’s latest work Knock at the Cabin, Rupert Grint revealed that the filmmaker was in talks to direct one of the Harry Potter movies.

M. Night Shyamalan’s movies might be divisive. But if there’s one thing everyone can agree on, his films — which usually fall in the world of horror — certainly leave audiences talking. That’s definitely the case with 2023’s Knock at the Cabin. The film even features the introduction of a new child actor with young Kristen Cui. Fans of The Sixth Sense know Shyamalan’s history with discovering new and emerging talent.

For better or worse, the past 25 years of horror movies have been massively affected by the work of M. Night Shyamalan. Films like The Sixth Sense and Signs led many to hail the director as a modern-day Alfred Hitchcock. But Shyamalan’s 2023 film, Knock at the Cabin, features something rarely seen in a mainstream horror film: a married gay couple.

But though they co-star in Knock at the Cabin, Groff and Aldridge have taken very different roads in their careers thus far.
Groff is perhaps best known for his work both on stage and on television.

(from left) Leonard (Dave Bautista), Adriane (Abby Quinn) and Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird) in Knock at the Cabin, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. One of my favorite genres also happens to be one of the least appreciated — horror. I’m sure philosophers and therapists can offer endless theories on why we love being scared, but it’s safe to say that horror films offer an experience like no other… when done correctly. Of course, it’s also one of the hardest genres to get just right, and a performance in the medium can make or break the movie. We’ve all seen those films or performances that walk a fine line between absolutely horror and unintentional comedy.
One of the best genre directors is M. Night Shyamalan, who has directed multiple actors to acclaimed performances in films that featured the supernatural, including...
