Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.
First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

In 2001, the TV mini-series was forever altered by HBO’s “Band of Brothers,” a towering achievement in the form and quite simply one of the best WWII films or shows of all time. Based on the book by Stephen E. Ambrose, and created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, “Band of Brothers” told the story of “Easy” Company from boot camp through the Western Front.

Today is Veteran’s Day, and to mark the occasion we’re doing to dip into the true story that inspired one of the greatest war movies ever made. Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan is commonly referred to as one of the most effective war movies ever made. Released in July 1998, Private Ryan was quickly lauded for its brutal depiction of life in combat, with most people singling out its stunning, harrowing recreation of the invasion of Omaha Beach on June 6th, 1944. The film went on gross a surprising $481 million worldwide and won five Oscars, including Best Director for Spielberg, who dedicated the movie to his father, a World War II vet. While the film of course took many a page from the history books to tell its gripping tale, the overall story – about a platoon of soldiers dispatched to recover a young private after three of his brothers...

Before we talk about Band of Brothers, Game of Thrones, and the embiggening of television, there’s a relic from the past I need you to see.
Earlier this month, the Twitter/X account “Nostalgia From Your Childhood” posted a video from before the 21st Century. It features one middle class American man ushering in the new millennium by showing his friends a bit of cutting edge entertainment technology that he bought for the reasonable price of $5,000. Give it a look below:

There, in all its standard definition glory, is what an expensive television set looked like on New Year’s Eve 1999. Heavy as boulders and providing about as crisp an image, the TVs of 1999 were far from the paper-thin 4K models that we’ve come to appreciate today.

Premiering on Sept. 9, 2001, World War II miniseries Band of Brothers is one of the most impressive shows in HBO‘s already-impressive TV canon. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 non-fiction book of the same name and produced by cinematic titans Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Band of Brothers offers an unflinching look at the horrors of war and the American heroes of Easy Company that would endure them to help bring down the Third Reich.
The 10 episodes presented in the show’s sole season are pitch-perfect television and now they’re about to be made available to an even wider audience. Alongside its spiritual cousin The Pacific (which follows the Pacific Theater of WWII), Band of Brothers is available to stream on Netflix as of Sept. 15. In 2001, the first two episodes of HBO's World War II miniseries, "Band of Brothers," aired just two days before the September 11 terrorist attacks, an event that would irrevocably alter America and its perception of its own war history, much of which it has mythologized on film. However, when creators Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks set out to adapt Stephen E. Ambrose's nonfiction book, "Band of Brothers," they wanted their follow-up to "Saving Private Ryan" to have the ring of historical authenticity.
On "Saving Private Ryan," Hanks had already found himself channeling his character, Captain Miller, when other members of the cast threatened to quit before filming even started. The experience of being forced to go "method" and attend a rigorous boot camp, led by the senior military advisor and real-life Marine veteran Dale Dye, left some of them wanting to bow out.

The Oscar-winning "Saving Private Ryan" and Emmy-winning "Band of Brothers" have more in common than just the involvement of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. "Band of Brothers" was based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose, who worked as a historical consultant on "Saving Private Ryan" and helped inspire its narrative. Ambrose's "D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II" informed the visceral D-Day sequence in "Saving Private Ryan," while his "Band of Brothers" book provided a loose sketch of the titular Private Ryan (Matt Damon), in the form of U.S. soldier Fritz Niland, the only one of four real-life brothers who was believed to be alive before he was recalled home during the war.
For its part, HBO's 10-hour "Band of Brothers" miniseries was told on a much larger scale than "Saving Private Ryan," which clocked in just shy of three hours.

It's been more than 20 years since HBO released its acclaimed war drama miniseries "Band of Brothers," which dramatized the history of Easy Company and the American soldiers who fought in and up until World War II. There is a good reason it still manages to impress to this day — apart from showcasing the visceral, uncompromising horrors of war, it authentically captured the cruelty and pathos inherent in the millions of civilian lives lost in the process.
Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name, "Band of Brothers" deftly balances the heroism of those who fought for the cause and the senseless violence that plagued these times, while also lending a platform to the survivors, whose relay their real-life experiences at the beginning of some episodes.

"Band Of Brothers" remains one of the most influential TV series of all time, if only because it helped bring about the so-called golden age of prestige TV we currently find ourselves in. Coming from creators and executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg — who will soon be bringing their follow-up "Masters Of The Air" to Apple TV+ — the show brought movie-level production values to the small screen, resulting in a vividly rendered version of World War II that still stands as one of the most affecting on-screen depictions of war.

In a series like "Band of Brothers," it's always going to be tough to stand out from the crowd. The HBO miniseries features a deep cast, filled to the brim with up-and-coming actors looking for their big break. And in a production like "Band of Brothers," it's a break that could change your life. For James Madio, who played Frank Perconte, that's exactly what it did -- in more ways than one.
Madio's Perconte does wind up standing out in the series, even in a young cast that featured then-unknowns like Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Tom Hardy, Dominic Cooper, and Andrew Scott. In part, it was because of his diminutive size, coming in at 5-foot-5, and with a scrawny build (but plenty of attitude). Standing next to a burly actor like the 6-foot-1 Michael Cudlitz, who played the aptly nicknamed "Bull" Randleman, he's easy to notice. But it wasn't just...

HBO's "Band of Brothers" remains one of the great TV shows and a devastatingly powerful recreation of World War II. Conceived by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks shortly after their Academy Award-winning World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers," based on the book by Stephen E. Ambrose, chronicles "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division's experiences in Europe. We follow this ragtag group of Americans through boot camp, D-Day, and Bastogne; witness their most ferocious battles; and watch as the war emotionally and physically impacts each of them.
As a bonus, preceding each episode is an introduction from various real-life members of Easy Company. They describe the action in their own words so that it resonates deeper. It's one thing to watch these events and another to hear a veteran recall the experience first-hand.

Dominic Cooper is one of those actors who, when compared with his contemporaries, slips under the radar despite delivering consistently great work. Most of the world knows him for his roles in the comic book realm, with his portrayal of a young Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his memorable take on the Reverend Jesse Custer in AMC's "Preacher" TV series. And let's not forget his musical turns in the "Mamma Mia!" films as Sky Ramand.
It's hard to imagine what we would've lost had Cooper thrown in the towel early on in his career. Yet, it almost happened, and we never would have gotten our favorite Daddy Stark portrayal (among other things). So, what led Cooper to consider giving up on acting in film and TV entirely? As he explained to The Guardian while promoting "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" in July 2018, his experience working...

"Band of Brothers" was one of the first shows to bridge the gap between television and film. It took the baton from Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" and improved on it, at least regarding character and story. There is nothing in "Band of Brothers" that is quite so arrestingly savage as Spielberg's genre-changing Omaha Beach sequence. However, HBO's 10-part miniseries is still a thunderous account of World War II, replete with many sad and brutal moments.
Based on Stephen Ambrose's non-fiction book of the same name, "Band of Brothers" follows "Easy" Company of the 101st Airborne Division through Normandy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the German interior. Human interest is somewhat diluted by the sheer number of characters involved, but there are focalizers in the ranks, namely Maj. Richard Winters (Damian Lewis) and Capt. For Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, 1998’s Saving Private Ryan marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration focused on World War II epics. After that film won five Oscars, they teamed up on a wartime drama for the small screen. It would be HBO’s “most expensive miniseries,” with a budget in the realm of 120 million, THR reported.
Band of Brothers, a 13-hour dramatization of Stephen Ambrose’s best-seller, followed a brigade of World War II soldiers known as “The Easy Company,” a regiment within the Army’s 101st Airborne Division. Each episode opened with audio testimony from a real veteran of the brigade before focusing on a member of the ensemble cast as they prepared for war and entered the field. David Schwimmer, at the height of his Friends fame, was joined by a group of relative newcomers including Damian Lewis in the central role of Lt.

HBO is essentially abandoning all the work done so far on its six-part miniseries "Lewis and Clark" starring Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts.
An adaptation of Stephen E. Ambrose's book "Undaunted Courage," the project follows the pair (played by Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts) as they traverse uncharted territory on a mission to deliver President Jefferson's message of sovereignty and search for the fabled all-water route to the Pacific.

HBO said in a statement to The Live Feed: "We have decided to redevelop Lewis and Clark with Michelle Ashford writing". Ashford, who is currently serving as the showrunner on Showtime's "Masters of Sex," penned the original script with Ed Norton and John Curran ("The Painted Veil").

HBO's high-profile "Lewis and Clark" six-part mini-series has shut down production in Canada and is currently looking for a new director after the departure of John Curran almost two months after filming began in Alberta, Canada.
Based on Stephen Ambrose's 1997 book "Undaunted Courage," Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts star in the series about the famed 19th century explorers who went on a remarkable three-year journey to map the western United States.
Both Curran, who co-wrote the mini, and the mini's cinematographer Rob Hardy are out of the project for "creative reasons". In fact the whole production has paused and there's no word as yet when filming will resume, but weather-related factors have also reportedly had an impact.
The project is being produced by Tom Hanks' Playtone, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment and National Geographic Studios.

HBO does like to take their time. After having the project for sometime the network has greenlit miniseries “Lewis And Clark” and announced Matthias Schoenaerts’ starring role according to Deadline. Schoenaerts has nabbed the role of William Clark, one half of the famed explorers at the center of the project. The other member of that duo, Meriwether Lewis, will be played by Casey Affleck. Based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s book “Undaunted Courage” the miniseries centers on their journey to explore this new world and the people living in it. The two men achieve something that lives on in our history books, but [...]

Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton decided they wanted to make a miniseries about Lewis and Clark, and now they've gotten HBO to green-light it. Based on Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage, the six-hour miniseries will star Casey Affleck as melancholic explorer Meriwether Lewis and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) as the rough-and-tumble soldier William Clark. No word yet on who's playing Sacagawea; fingers crossed it won't be Rooney Mara.

HBO’s making history again.
The premium cabler, home of John Adams and The Pacific, soon will set off on a new expedition: a miniseries based on the historical travels of Lewis and Clark.
Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) will play Meriwether Lewis opposite Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts as William Clark in a project chronicling the famous trip, the network announced Friday.
The six-hour miniseries, based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage, will follow the 19th-century explorers as they go on a President Jefferson-ordered excursion through uncharted territory, searching for an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean.

Casey Affleck is one of the great American actors of his generation, yet he is still a performer that everyone seems to underestimate. He has made a career of compelling lead turns in films like Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and is also a reliable character actor. Last year, he was the biggest scene-stealer of the lacklustre Out of the Furnace, while almost nobody saw him in the evocative western Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which he was terrific in as well. Now, the actor who has certainly outgrown being referred to as a certain someone’s brother, has signed on to another period western, Lewis and Clark, which will be a six-hour miniseries for HBO.
The project has been gestating for a while, but with Affleck now on board, we expect it to push forward full speed ahead. Tom Hanks,...

If there's one actor we want to see more of, all the time, it's Casey Affleck. Last year we were lucky enough to get him in two major roles in "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" and "Out Of Furnace," while in 2014, we'll have to wait until the end of the year to see what he gets up to in Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar." However, we're about get a whole lot more of Affleck in a big way, with the actor headed to the small screen. Affleck has signed up to star in HBO's "Lewis And Clark." As you might have surmised from the title, the six-hour miniseries will be about explorers Lewis and Clark, and their journey down the Missouri River. Some big talent is behind this one with powerhouses Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt putting the executive producer credit on this thing. And the show will be adapted from the...

It’s been over twelve years since the ten-part miniseries Band Of Brothers first aired and it remains an incredibly visceral and evocative piece of war drama. Over the course of its ten episodes, the series allows us to become immersed in the difficult and often terrifying experiences the men of Easy Company faced during World War Two and brings into sharp focus the brutal and horrific reality of armed conflict.
The series traces its roots back to American historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s book of the same name. Ambrose’s Band of Brothers was an insightful piece of military history focusing on one specific cog in the wider military machine of World War Two. That crucial cog was Easy Company,...

It’s now been twelve years since Band of Brothers hit our screens, yet HBO’s miniseries remains a timeless classic. Devised by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks in the wake of their success with Saving Private Ryan, the show was an adaptation of the book of the same name by historian Stephen E. Ambrose (who had served as Saving Private Ryan’s military advisor), which told the story of Easy Company, part of a parachute regiment from the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army during World War II.
The series tells the true story (though some dramatic licence is taken) of the unit and the men within it, who are shown participating in a number of major battles and events from the last year of the War in Europe, ranging from D-Day and Operation Market Garden to the liberation of Landsberg Concentration Camp and the capture of...

Former United States Senator, and Presidential candidate, George McGovern.
In 2005, I had the good fortune to interview former Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of Stephen Vittoria's documentary "One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern," which looked at McGovern's ill-fated 1972 bid for the White House. During our interview, and during a lengthy dinner at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills several months later, (which happened to fall on what would have been the 80th birthday of his close friend, Robert F. Kennedy), McGovern was thoughtful, direct, and kind-hearted; a gentleman and a gentle man. When we raised a glass to toast Bobby Kennedy's memory, Senator McGovern said quietly "Bobby made us all want to be better people." A more fitting valediction of George McGovern couldn't be said. Rest in peace.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent the following message to this year's Cannonballers:
Now that summer is here (yes, I know not technically, but as far as I'm concerned summer begins when June does), I am thinking that it would be good to have a theme for some of the Cbr posts this summer: Summer Reads. I don't know about you, but summer vacations-especially when I go to the beach-are when I have some of my best opportunities to finally make a dent in my reading list. And I often make a trip to the library before heading out on vacation. I'd like to be able to give the Pajibans a bunch of recommendations as they may be looking to add to their summer reading lists.
Of course to do this, I need your help. I would like you to send me links to any reviews you've written for...

There's something charmingly old fashioned about the way Tom DeLonge calls his first venture into the film world "a motion picture," which may be a more accurate description of "Love" than he may know. A film that's so beautifully captured in every individual frame that it easily lends itself to adjectives such as striking and haunting, its very plot is unstuck in time, caught between the future where an astronaut is grappling with his sanity as the end of his space mission draws near and the past where a lieutenant in the Civil War makes a discovery that could send ripples through chronology as we've come to accept it.
Appropriately enough, DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves have similarly closed the gap between one era and another with the science-fiction flick that they've not only scored, but will release later this year as part of a double album that its...

Richard "Dick" Winters, the commander of Easy Company whose World War II exploits were portrayed in the "Band of Brothers" book and award-winning HBO series (portrayed by Damian Lewis), died last week at the age of 92. Winters died following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and asked that news of his death be withheld until after his funeral. Winters became the leader of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division on D-Day, after the death of the company commander during the invasion of Normandy. Historian Stephen Ambrose interviewed Winters for the 1992 book "Band of Brothers," upon which the 10-part HBO miniseries was based. The series, co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, started airing in September 2001 to wide critical acclaim. Winters himself published a memoir in 2006 entitled "Beyond Band of Brothers." When people asked whether he was a hero, Winters replied: "No, but I served in a company of heroes.

The former World War II American Army officer whose story inspired Tom Hanks' mini-series Band Of Brothers has died.
Richard 'Dick' Winters passed away on 2 January - less than three weeks short of his 93rd birthday.
In 1942, Winters was assigned to lead the E Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which he led until the end of World War II.
Winters' brave efforts to keep his unit together inspired historian Stephen E. Ambrose to write 1992 book Band of Brothers, which spawned the hit 2001 U.S. TV show produced by Hanks and director Steven Spielberg.
The mini-series was the most expensive ever made, with a budget of approximately $125 million (£83 million), and brought Winters international attention.
However, the war veteran was uncomfortable being labelled a hero and shied away from interviews, preferring instead to give talks at local schools.
According to PennLive.com, he was hailed by former U.S. President George W. Bush as "a fine example... for those brave souls who now wear our nation's uniform."...

Dick Winters, World War II veteran, winner of the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism on D-Day, and the central character of HBO's "Band of Brothers" miniseries, has died. If you watched the miniseries (which I reviewed on my old blog a couple of summers ago), or read Stephen Ambrose's book on the exploits of Easy Company that inspired the miniseries, or watched the various documentary tie-ins, then you know that Winters (played in the miniseries by Damian Lewis) was a calm, selfless, inspiring, exceedingly decent man, and the very model of what Tom Brokaw dubbed The Greatest Generation. Last month, I had the privilege to sit with the incomparable Edward Norton for a 1-on-1 discussion about his arresting turn in Stone, the themes and importance of sound in the film, and working with Robert De Niro for the second time. Plus we bounced around to touch on his dual comedic performances in Leaves of Grass (out now on DVD), The Incredible Hulk, his guest appearance on “Modern Family,” the possibility of a Rounders sequel, and briefly about his HBO miniseries “Undaunted Courage” about the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Here’s what he had to say:
Can you talk about preparing for this role in Stone?
Norton: It was very contained to this one… The prison we shot in was half closed and half active. I really didn’t do much other than sit in rooms and talk to inmates. They’d just bring them in and let me pick their brains.
