Chris Alexander has snapped up some of the coolest jobs in horror journalism, and now he's creating cool new ones to take on as well. After a stint writing for Rue Morgue magazine, he moved on to become editor-in-chief at Fangoria, building a résumé between the two that is enough to make the rest of us genre hacks jealous. But then he went and resurrected Gorezone (which he edits), and now, in conjunction with horror/exploitation film legend Charles Band, he's helped create (and edit) Delirium, a magazine devoted to the film catalogs of Empire Pictures and Full Moon. It's with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I talk of jealousy, of course; Alexander is in the position(s) he's in through a combination of talent, hard work and an absolute love of the stuff he's writing about. That love shines through in Delirium #1, a debut issue that's as bold,...

What’s not to love about origami? Seeing a piece of paper folded into an interesting shape is super cool, but having all those shapes be Star Wars related is nothing short of fantastic. Star Wars Origami is available and would make the perfect holiday gift for Star Wars fans of all ages. The only thing better would be winning that gift, am I right?

Now, instead of just naming titles, we can direct the inquisitive chill seeker to a single book... Dr. AC Presents Hidden Horror. You’ve probably noticed that a lot of us at Fsr are horror geeks. Actually, a lot of movie writers on the web in general seem to be fans of the genre. It’s the one type of movie that warrants tons of sites specifically focused on that niche audience, and that’s because there are plenty of films to discuss and plenty more fans to do the discussing. Why that is, I don’t know. I’m one of the few who doesn’t care that much for scary movies — or the many horror films that aren’t even meant to be “scary” — and while I have plenty of theories about why others are obsessed with the genre, I’d love to hear whatever conclusion is made by a new documentary in the works called Why Horror? Probably intended more for you horror geeks than someone like me, but hopefully satisfying to both, the...

In my pre-Internet, pre-instant-access-to-everything youth, magazines were a valuable commodity, a window to a world I might otherwise never see. Magazines brought us news from far-flung places, gave us inside access to rock stars and sports figures, and provided tantalizing hints at what the future might hold in just about every area of interest - especially movies. For a certified gorehound like me, Fangoria was (and still is, in my opinion) the standard-bearer when it came to magazines devoted to horror movies. Fangoria wasn't afraid to put flayed corpses, slimy creatures, or entrail-filled television cabinets front and center on its covers, and its insides were filled with plenty more guts and grue. Fango was seemingly on every horror movie set, taking pictures and interviewing the principles involved so that we, the fans, could be well-informed about what was hitting theaters and video stores in the months ahead. We already had...

In 1988, horror was (blood) red-hot, and the pages of Fangoria magazine were bursting trying to keep up with it all. The home video market had given fans access to all kinds of horror – not just the stuff making it into the local cinemas, but direct-to-video schlock and stunning efforts from foreign markets that amped up the gore and sexuality to whole new levels. From out of this fertile breeding ground Gorezone was born, a sister publication to Fangoria specifically designed to handle all of the material that was too esoteric - or even too extreme - for the flagship title.
That initial run lasted 27 issues before the Gorezone flag was folded, but now it’s coming back. Fangoria editor-in-chief Chris Alexander has announced that Gorezone is coming back in a print-only, subscription-only bi-monthly format beginning later this year. But, he has been garnering a lot of attention over the past seven years, with extremely intelligent, visceral, unrelenting films like Satan’s Playground and the much buzzed about Torture Chamber. Tomaselli is a director to watch. He is quickly becoming a household name to horror fans. He makes thought provoking, intense films that say much more than what we see on the surface. FEARnet caught up with the genre great to get the details on his latest film Torture Chamber and his upcoming film, a redux of Alice, Sweet Alice. Tomaselli filled us in on why scoring his projects is so important to him, when we can expect Torture Chamber to be released, why the budget for Alice is going to be his biggest yet, and why he decided to relocate Alice to the 1970s for his re-imagining.

Antiviral is a strange, surreal beast. Set in a future that finds celebrity culture at its sickening peak, the film follows "Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) who works at the Lucas Clinic, which has an unusual and highly profitable line of business: deliberately infecting paying customers with diseases harvested from top celebrities, thus providing a "biological communion" between stars and fans."
"Though his work environment is tightly monitored, Syd manages to sneak viruses out of the office and retool them on his personal console for his lucrative sideline supplying the black-market disease trade. When Syd is tasked by his employer to collect a virus from starlet Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon), he is unable to resist the temptation to get closer to one of his own personal celebrity obsessions. Injecting the virus into his own bloodstream, Syd is launched down a dangerous path—and the stakes are raised even higher when...

“There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.”

Following a highly buzzed festival run and a host of international release, Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska's second film, American Mary is coming stateside thanks to Xlrator Media's Screamfest Label in Fall 2013.
A wonderful leap in filmmaking from their debut, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, American Mary sees Ginger Snaps' Katharine Isabelle star as the titular "medical student Mary Mason as she grows increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the surgeons she once admired. The allure of easy money and notoriety send Mary into the shady world of underground surgery and body modification."
Anchored by Isabelle's fantastic turn, the Soska Sisters have crafted something incredibly strong in American Mary. Engaging, grisly and often terribly funny, this is one to watch out for.

That’s right…it says Director up there in the title. Although he’s perhaps better known as the current editor in chief of Fangoria magazine Chris Alexander has dipped his toes in all sorts of different media over the years. He was the resident film critic on Canada’s “The John Oakley Show”, he wrote the “Schizoid Cinephile” column for Canadian horror mag “Rue Morgue”, authored “Chris Alexander’s Blood Splattered Book” in 2010, composed & released music (On the Meridian music label), taught film theory at the Toronto Film & Media College And he even managed to find some time to get into the squared circle & go a few rounds with director Uwe Boll back in 2006!… More...

This week, Editor-in-Chief Chris Alexander and Dave Pace talk about this Sunday’s premiere of our Walking Dead live blog:
Dave Pace: We do a lot of thinking here at Fangoria labs, thinking about ways to keep making the experience for the fans more awesome and more immersive. The Live Dead Blog is a pretty damned cool step in that direction as we are inviting the Fangoria faithful to gather round our corner of the interwebs and watch The Walking Dead with us and comment on the show in real time!
Chris Alexander: Indeed. It's been a long time since I've seen the kind of magic one two punch of pop culture fever and genuinely fantastic entertainment rolled into one, and even Longer since that combo has graced the horror world. The Walking Dead, in its third season shows not only no sign of losing steam, it is, so far,...

Bava’s bizarre 1970 psychodrama Hatchet For The Honeymoon is one of his few masterworks that remains less celebrated, and that’s a shame, because it’s a triumph of style, satire and bizarre, obsessive imagery. Fangoria and Toronto’s Revue Cinema (499 Roncesvalles Avenue) will present a special screening of Hatchet Wednesday, October 24 at 9 p.m., and are honored to have as special guest for the evening revered pianist, artist and composer Stephen Forsyth, who starred as Hatchet’s murderous, mentally unbalanced lead and was a major star in Italy during the 1960s, starring in several high-profile, violent spaghetti Westerns and thrillers. Fango editor Chris Alexander will sit down with Forsyth for an in-depth discussion dissecting Bava’s unique directing approach and reflecting on those long-gone, never-forgotten days when the internationally exported genre cinema was king.

Anybody living in or around Montreal knows that La Belle Province’s metropolis is a fantastic place to be a film lover, especially for horror films. Now the obvious reason why this would be the case is the Fantasia International Film Festival, which had its 16th edition run this past July and August. Yet another, perhaps lesser know (but certainly growing) venue for Montreal horror film buffs to satisfy their cravings is the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, a unique experience if there ever was one.
The fine folks at Miskatonic have, in essence, set up a non-profit ‘school’ of sorts where an actual curriculum is set up for which films lovers and hopeful filmmakers can sign up for courses which last from September to April of the following year. Among the speakers are established writers, filmmakers and curators who provide bountiful insight, intelligent critical analysis and commentary on the...
