Exclusive: Prince William and the recovering Kate Middleton will not be in attendance at this Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards.
Deadline has learned that the Duke of Cambridge, who has been the film and TV org’s president since 2010, will instead record a video message that will be played during the ceremony, for which nominees include four actors from The Crown.
William attended the BAFTA Film Awards in February alone as his wife was recovering from illness, and we are told it is not unusual for the pair to only attend one of the two major BAFTA awards ceremonies in a calendar year.
William has been attending some engagements recently but Middleton is currently recovering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. She revealed the news around six weeks ago via a video message, stating that doctors had found the cancer during tests after an operation. There had been speculation about the...

The BAFTA TV Awards nominations are out for 2024 and, while Netflix is winning headlines after strong showings for The Crown and Black Mirror, there were some snubs and surprises.
Black Mirror’s strong showing is perhaps among the eyebrow-raisers after Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series received mixed reviews and has not exactly been generating awards buzz.
The Netflix drama, now in its sixth season, garnered seven nominations for Demon 79, five of which were in the BAFTA Television Craft Awards, including best drama writer for Brooker and Bisha K. Ali.
The episode, in which a demon instructs a mild-mannered sales assistant to go on a killing spree, is up for best limited drama, while star Anjana Vasan is a surprise runner in the leading actress race.
Born in India, Vasan’s inclusion in the category marks a departure from last year, when there was controversy over the all-white leading actress nominations,...

Whilst terminal illness and imminent death might not be the obvious source for a delightful surreal comedy, Yasmin Afifi has built a humorous and affecting world within those parameters in BAFTA nominated short Jellyfish & Lobster. It’s a touching and very personal project created as her graduate film at the National Film and Television School, which follows two non-conformist, unapologetic patients of a care home who refuse to let their illnesses or age define them. One of ten shorts that we highlighted as favourites in our Nfts Graduate Showcase recommendations at the start of the year, Jellyfish & Lobster rides on a surreal Cocoon-esque premise as a swimming pool becomes a vehicle for the anarchic pair to escape their reality and immerse themselves in the draw of past youthful vibrancy. Afifi delicately balances real and magical elements on screen, rendering the well-honed script all the more powerful and recently spoke...

[This story contains spoilers from the final season of The Crown.]
With the release of the last six episodes of The Crown on Netflix have come new questions about the fictionalized depiction of the British royal family.
In part two of the sixth and final season of the critically acclaimed historical drama, the stage is set for the future heirs to the throne as Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) are granted permission to wed, and Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) rekindle their relationship after a brief break.
“Those couples coming together felt like a beautiful end to our story,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie told The Hollywood Reporter in a previous interview. “That, in a way, peace is restored to the land.”
In staying true to his original vision of ending the series in 2005, writer and creator Peter Morgan had to also find a way to conclude the Queen’s story...

“The Crown doesn’t ask existential questions of itself,” Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) is told when she contemplates modernizing the British monarchy during a time of particularly frigid public opinion. “It suggests a loss of confidence. It’s putting blood in the water.” But if the Crown won’t pose those inquiries, Peter Morgan’s The Crown often has.
Since 2016, the Netflix drama has probed the British royal family from an array of angles, and in doing so asked us to consider what the monarchy is worth, what the monarchy is for, what the monarchy has cost the people at its center and the people around them and the nation they purport to serve — all conversations that feel, if anything, even more relevant in 2023. In its final six episodes, however, The Crown proves less interested in interrogating the status quo than admiring it. It surely makes for a sweeter finish.

Elizabeth Debicki has been making the rounds for the final two seasons of “The Crown” as Diana, Princess of Wales, a role she stepped into after it was vacated by Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin, who debuted in the fourth season. The fifth season of the Netflix historical drama saw the separation and divorce of Diana and Charles, Prince of Wales (Dominic West) and the effect that it has on the Royal Family. Debicki’s portrayal garnered her a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for that season, and she is the lone acting nomination at the 2023 Emmy Awards for “The Crown” in Best Drama Supporting Actress. For the sixth and final season of the series, Debicki gives a heartbreaking dramatic performance as it depicts the last eight weeks of Princess Diana’s life before her tragic death.

For five seasons, The Crown has been lauded by critics and viewers alike. But as the royal drama’s depiction of historical events has inched closer to audiences’ recent lived memories, the series has come under scrutiny for its portrayals of the monarchy and dramatization of particular storylines.
Last year, Netflix added a disclaimer to the description of the trailer for season five on its YouTube channel that described the series as a “fictional dramatization,” a result of criticism from Dame Judi Dench saying The Crown “seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.” The clarification, according to the show’s head of research, Annie Sulzberger, is unnecessary.
“I simply think that the audience is smarter than that,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “We’ve never pitched ourselves as a documentary. We’re trying to show this country, these institutions,...

The first half of the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown delivered an emotional retelling of the events surrounding Princess Diana’s untimely death.
The final season of the hit historical drama has been split into two parts, following a shift in release strategy employed by the streamer on other hit shows like Stranger Things, You and The Witcher. The final season covers the years 1997-2005; however, part one took place solely in 1997, in the two months leading up to and the week after Diana’s fatal car crash. (Part two, which releases Dec. 14, will be more expansive to span the remaining years.)
When asked about the decision to split the final run, executive producer Suzanne Mackie recently told The Hollywood Reporter: It prolongs the buzz around the final episodes, allowed them to transition Prince William and Prince Harry from the younger boys to young men in recasting,...

In her 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, Princess Diana famously quipped that her marriage to Prince Charles was “a bit crowded” due to his extramarital relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. And in The Crown’s retelling of her brief romance with Dodi Fayed, the creators paint a picture of yet another of Diana’s relationships that was never given the opportunity to simply exist between two individuals.
“One of the big things I did for season six is I gathered as many of the photos with the research team as I could of Dodi and Diana and I put them in chronological order,” explains Khalid Abdalla, who portrays Fayed in the Netflix historical drama. “When you put them in chronological order, it tells a story, and you’re kind of like, ‘Ah, that’s the moment when things shifted.’ You begin to feel the hounding from the media and all of these things.

“The Crown” has returned, and with it renewed interest in what the prestige Netflix series got right and wrong about history. “The Crown” Season 6 is split into two parts, with the first four episodes focusing predominantly on the final weeks of Princess Diana’s life and the immediate aftermath of her death. And within those first four hours, a number of questions arise as to what’s portrayed and what actually happened.

Before the writers of The Crown dove into the romance of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed for season six (Part 1 of which is currently streaming on Netflix), the creators built up a narrative around the film producer’s life as the son of billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed. For many, it was their first glimpse into who Fayed was outside of his highly publicized relationship with Diana.
“One of the first questions I asked was, ‘What did he sound like?'” actor Khalid Abdalla, who portrays Fayed in seasons five and six of The Crown, tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. (Elizabeth Debicki portrays Princess Diana and Salim Daw plays Mohamed Al-Fayed.) “With the incredible hunt of the research team, they found one piece of footage that exists: Audio of him calling into Larry King Live while Burt Reynolds was being interviewed to ask him to do an impression. Netflix has explained why Dodi Fayed, Princess Diana's romantic interest, appeared as a ghost to his father in Season 6 of The Crown.
Part 1 of the historical drama's sixth and final season dedicated the bulk of its four episodes to Princess Diana's brief summer romance with Dodi Fayed, the son of ambitious business tycoon, Mohamed al-Fayed.
After Episode 3 ends with the tragic car crash that resulted in Dodi and Diana's deaths, Episode 4 not only shows the ghost of the late Princess of Wales but also Dodi's as well.

A question that has lingered around The Crown since its introduction of Princess Diana in season four is how the fictional drama will deal with the real-life death of the Princess of Wales in 1997. The storyline comes to a head in part one of the sixth and final season of the series, now streaming on Netflix, which finds Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Al-Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) exploring the beginnings of a relationship.
Over the course of four episodes, audiences see how not only the couple’s lives but their budding romance was snatched from them in its infancy, smothered by the media and Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed’s (Salim Daw), own selfish desires for his son and his business empire.

The summer of 1997 was meant to be the beginning of Princess Diana’s new life. As a still fairly recent divorcee (her marriage with then-Prince Charles ended the year before), she spoke to Vanity Fair in June for what would become her last official interview.
At the same time, the famous auction house Christie’s was cataloging some of her most famous gowns to go under the gavel (with all proceeds benefiting charities), and it was clear to everyone in the room that the auction was more than a symbolic move: Diana was free—”free of the restrictions that she had before,” as her friend Rosa Monckton put it.
No one seemed more aware than Diana herself. The late Meredith Etherington-Smith, then the group creative marketing director for the auction house, shared that the Princess of Wales asked to work with a photographer who was new to her because she wanted new everything.

The build up: It’s the television event of the year and it was always going to come with controversy. The sixth and final season of The Crown began yesterday on Netflix, with four episodes dropping. Final warning: Here’s where the spoilers really begin — turn away/scroll past this block if you want to remain innocent. For those still with me, there’s been plenty of trepidation around screeners, spoilers and early reviews at the Netflix end, understandably so for the most part, as the season deals with the untimely deaths of Diana Princess of Wales and her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed,...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Part 1 of Season 6 of “The Crown,” now streaming on Netflix.
Fact check: Will Princess Diana’s “ghost” make an appearance in Season 6 of “The Crown” as the U.K. tabloid have hysterically insisted?
The answer is… kind of.
Each season of “The Crown” has traditionally spanned a decade, but, as befitting the tragedy of Princess Diana’s death, time slows down in Episodes 1-4, which covers the weeks between Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed inviting Diana onto his yacht for the summer and her death alongside Al Fayed’s son Dodi on Aug. 31, 1997.
In Variety‘s Oct. 25 cover story about “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan, he said he would have preferred “not to revisit” the period after Diana’s death, having previously written the feature film “The Queen” about the impact of Diana’s demise on the royal family. “But there’s no way.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “The Crown” Season 6, Part 1.]
When the ghost of Diana, Princess of Wales, first appears, she says, “Ta-da!”
Narratively speaking, her cheeky apparition arrives in response to Charles (Dominic West) talking to himself. He’s just left Paris after examining her body — a sight spared the viewer, who’s just witnessed Mohamed Al-Fayed (Salim Daw) weep over his son’s corpse — and, on the plane ride back to England, he’s awestruck by his ex-wife’s sway over the world, even in death. “Paris,” he says. “One of the busiest cities in the world, and you brought it to a standstill.” And then there she is. No longer silent and still on a surgical table, but sitting right across from the father of her children. “Ta-da!” she says, as if Charles, let alone any of “The Crown’s” viewers, are in the mood for a magic trick.
Peter Morgan’s Netflix series has long chosen dark,...

Popular British historical-drama series ‘The Crown’ has been surrounded by a spree of controversial arguments lately, and most recently it has been charged with distortion of historical facts, in particular of fabricating Mohamed Al-Fayed’s role in playing matchmaker to Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, something which Michael Cole has completely rubbished.
Director Peter Morgan’s lavish royal drama repeatedly implies that the relationship was engineered by Al-Fayed, the late Egyptian business mogul, as part of his ambition to obtain British citizenship. However, this is a distortion of historical facts as this allegation was refuted back in 1997.
Michael Cole, who is the former spokesperson for Al-Fayed has gone on record to time and again deny that his ex-boss was involved in Diana and Dodi’s fateful romance, or had any role in it for that matter.
Speaking to Deadline, Cole revealed that he never once witnessed or had any knowledge of Al-Fayed engineering the relationship,...

As Netflix’s The Crown dives deeper into Princess Diana’s last days, it also focuses on another significant character in her story, the paparazzi. As Diana’s romance with Dodi Al Fayed grew, press interest in their love story intensified. To properly document that period in Diana’s life, Elizabeth Debicki was made to feel like her, swarmed by paparazzi in some key scenes. The actor says she felt “trapped” filming these “horrendous” scenes.
Elizabeth Debicki felt very much like Princess Diana during ‘The Crown’s’ paparazzi ambush
Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. Therefore, any move she made, both within and outside of the royal family, was heavily documented.
However, when she began a romance with Dodi Al Fayed on the heels of a breakup with surgeon Hasnat Kahn, paparazzi interest in her new relationship was at an all-time high. The Crown...

Almost seven years to the day since it began, we’re about to give a royal wave of farewell to Netflix drama The Crown, but series six might be its most eye-opening yet, as its first part (out on November 16) deals with the events surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana.
Some critics’ hackles might be up already after the show previously attracted condemnation for historical inaccuracies, so it will be especially interesting to see how the show covers such an emotive and important event in royal history, and just where the story ends when the final episodes are released on 14th December.
Even so, many fans will be disappointed not to see more recent events get The Crown treatment, like that Prince Andrew interview and Harry and Meghan’s very public royal uncoupling, but is it so far beyond the realms of possibility that the show might have a...

A fascinating thing happened to "The Crown" as the show progressed. The first few seasons of the ornate Netflix series were at least partially sympathetic to the members of the House of Windsor, particularly Queen Elizabeth, played first by Claire Foy, and then by Olivia Colman. And then came season 4, and with it, the introduction of Princess Diana, played by Emma Corrin. All at once, the show's portrayal of the royals began to shift, and they became cold, miserable people, with Diana suffering the brunt of their iciness as she butted up against rigid tradition and a loveless marriage. The more prominence Diana had, the less sympathetic everyone else on the show became. Whether or not this was always the plan is hard to say, but it's undeniable. Perhaps it's because Diana has always been a sympathetic figure; a beautiful outsider cut down in the prime of her life.

The end is in sight for “The Crown”, the impeccably classy drama that pushed Netflix into the upper echelons of prestige TV and launched a thousand royal think pieces. Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent to turn the enigma of the Windsor clan into the fanciest soap opera of the 2010s and ‘20s.
It certainly paid off for the streaming giant, proving they could compete with traditional TV and then some, but it was always a concept set on a timer. Eventually, they were going to catch up to the current era of the British royals. Now that King Charles is on the throne and Prince Harry’s in Montecito, showrunner Peter Morgan is pulling the plug before the turn of the new millennium. Even if basic chronology hadn’t gotten in the way, it’s for the best that things end before the growing sameness engulfs the entire narrative.

Nobody would have blamed Peter Morgan if the sixth season of Netflix’s The Crown had addressed the death of Diana and its impact on the royal family in only a roundabout way.
Ok, some people absolutely would have. But I personally wouldn’t have blamed Peter Morgan if he’d decided that, with 2006’s The Queen, he’d already made his two-hour episode of The Crown dealing with the impact of Diana’s death on Queen Elizabeth and the precarious position of the monarchy. Surely, Morgan had nothing to gain from rehashing the same beats of royal mourning, along with musing on the causes behind Elizabeth’s slow initial response and the circumstances behind her eventually well-received address to the grieving nation.
At the very least, I hoped that Morgan would find an unexpected angle: the perspective of a palace guard spending the days after Diana’s death watching over the impromptu public memorials,...

The 2006 film The Queen, written by Peter Morgan, dramatizes the immediate aftermath of the death of Princess Diana. Much of the conflict comes from Queen Elizabeth’s reluctance to publicly address the grief of her subjects, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair pleading with her to speak.
In the fourth episode of the sixth and final season of The Crown, Morgan finds himself essentially remaking his earlier film. Only this time, the anguished voice of the people is not Blair, but Prince Charles. It’s a telling choice, less indicative...

The Crown, which has won 21 Emmy Awards during its run on Netflix and is one of the streamer’s most enduringly popular original series, will soon step down from the throne. The show’s sixth season will be its last telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s royal family in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The critically acclaimed series has chronicled some six decades of Elizabeth II’s reign, recasting its central characters every two seasons as the show moves through recent history as characters age. Claire Foy played the young Elizabeth for The Crown’s first two seasons and was followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four; both won Emmys for their work. Imelda Staunton took over the role in season five and will finish out the show as it moves into the early 2000s.

The Crown star Elizabeth Debicki has described shooting the scenes in the lead-up to Princess Diana’s death as “completely unbearable.”
With Netflix set to premiere the royal smash’s final series next week, which includes Diana’s death, Debicki said recreating some of the most poured over scenes in modern history was “difficult,” describing the task as “heavy and very manic and incredibly invasive.”
Netflix has already made clear that Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris will take place off screen but the lead-up includes the days prior to the crash and the heavy press attention that Diana and her partner Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) generated. The Crown director Christian Schwochow recently detailed to Deadline the extraordinary efforts that went into ensuring these scenes were handled with tact.

Exclusive: The director of Netflix drama The Crown‘s episodes re-creating Princess Diana’s death in Paris 26 years ago has revealed the extraordinary efforts that went into ensuring it was handled with tact.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Christian Schwochow, who directed the three crucial Season 6 episodes that feature what are likely to be some of the most talked about moments on television this year, said that though shots were filmed of Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, in the Paris morgue, there was never any intention of them being included in the final edit.
The filmmaker directed the second episode from the final season of Peter Morgan’s British royal drama, titled “Two Photographs”; episode 3 (“Dis-Moi-Oui”), which features the crash; and episode 4, titled “Aftermath.”
Schwochow also confirmed reports from last October that the crash involving the Mercedes-Benz, driven by Henri Paul and carrying Diana, Dodi Fayed and security consultant Trevor Rees-Jones,...

The Crown has tackled many turbulent times for the Royal family, but the sixth and final season will go one step further.
As previously reported, the series will chart Princess Diana's final days leading up to her death in a car crash in 1997.
Diana notes in the newly released trailer that "the press are on our tails constantly."
The clip captures several moments of photographers getting too close for comfort.
Whether she's with her children or on a vacation, the press appears, seemingly out of nowhere.
The most significant moment of the trailer showcases Diana accepting Dodi's invitation to go to Paris, but things take a horrible turn when they're, once again, hounded by the press.
We then see various lights turning on in the dead of night at Balmoral, likely due to the media storm surrounding the tragic accident that killed Diana.

We learned earlier this month via the first teaser that The Crown would be back for its sixth and final season in November – but that it would also be split into two chunks arriving roughly a month apart. That footage was primarily focused on Imelda Staunton's Queen Elizabeth II as she reflected on her royal legacy. But for the new, full trailer, the attention shifts to Elizabeth Debicki's Princess Diana, who is trying to life a post-Royal Family life in the glare of tabloid attention. See the new trailer:
Diana is being courted by the Fayeds in the South of France, giving the young Princes a taste of luxury yachts, video games and movie nights. Charles is sticking to tradition in Balmoral. The comparisons play out in the press, fuelled by a fervent paparazzi, and some of the Royal press team.

It's the beginning of the inevitable end. Throughout the course of its five previous seasons, "The Crown" has been steadily marching towards the tragic events that ended the life of Princess Diana, the world-famous media darling and sometimes-controversial member of the royal family who took pop culture by storm. Based on how many times Hollywood has told and retold this story over the years, the legacy surrounding the Princess of Wales hasn't abated at all with the passage of time. Director Pablo Larraín most recently cast Kristen Stewart in the role for the brilliant 2021 film "Spencer," and a year later it was Elizabeth Debicki's turn to step in, taking over for Emma Corrin (who previously portrayed the public figure in season 4) on the ever-popular Netflix series.
But nothing lasts forever, and Netflix is certainly keen on sending out "The Crown" with all the pomp and circumstance the streaming service can muster.

Netflix has released the trailer for Part 1 of the sixth and final season of “The Crown,” slated for release on Nov. 16.
The final season will be split into two parts, with the first four episodes exploring the new relationship between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before their tragic car accident. The Crown is signing off after six seasons later this year, but Netflix may not be done with the royal drama's universe.
In a new interview with Variety, series creator Peter Morgan has revealed there is a chance we could get a prequel series.
"I do have an idea," Morgan told the outlet.
"But first, I need to do some other things.
"Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together."
Morgan is staying tight-lipped about the plot but believes it would take us back in time to before The Crown's Elizabeth II storyline.
"If I were to go back into The Crown," he shares, "it would definitely be to go back in time."

Keeping that universe alive would be something Netflix would be interested in.
The series has continually generated buzz and remained in the headlines throughout its six-season run.

After 4 seasons of highly regarded prestige drama and, well, whatever season 5 was, "The Crown" is set to take its last bow with a two-part sixth season that begins in November. For years, fans of the show have anticipated seeing the way it will handle more modern events like the death of Princess Diana and the racist handling of Meghan Markle's time within the royal family. Based on new plot details about the upcoming season, it seems like the show's conclusion may only aim to tackle one of those events, but we'll know for sure when the show drops on Netflix next month.
Which castmates should we expect to return to "The Crown" for its last hurrah, and who will get the aged-up recast treatment? What historic events should we expect to see, and who's behind the camera for the final stretch of episodes? Is the show going to pull...

Netflix has released photos from part one of the sixth and final season of The Crown, with the first batch featuring Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed. The photo drop also includes pics of Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Salim Daw as Mohamed Al Fayed.
Part one of the final season focuses on the relationship between Princess Diana and Dodi, a relationship that ended with the horrific car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris.
“I think it’s a really unique challenge as an actor, to portray those days,” said Elizabeth Debicki in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I really just trusted in Peter’s emotional blueprint that he created for us to follow. It’s his interpretation...

We learned earlier this month that The Crown Season 6 would air on Netflix in two parts.
Now, the streaming service has dropped photos to tease the final chapter.
As if that wasn't enough, the cast is opening up about being a part of telling this story.
Undoubtedly, a big part of the final season will be Diana's tragic death.
"I think it's a really unique challenge as an actor, to portray those days," Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Diana, told Netflix's Tudum in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike.
"I really just trusted in [series creator] Peter [Morgan] 's emotional blueprint that he created for us to follow.
It's his interpretation, and I think it made emotional sense to me, so I clung to that.
Because, obviously, it's devastating and it's fraught and we can never know."
Khalid Abdalla is on board Dodi Fayed, Diana's boyfriend.
