Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid, April 25 (Ians) Wednesday brings another nerve-wracking day of football in La Liga, with the race to qualify for Europe and avoid relegation tighter than ever.
With Pedri and Frenkie de Jong back in action, Fc Barcelona travel to Vallecas to defend their 11-point lead at the top of the table away to Rayo Vallecano.
After overcoming Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Barca will be confident, although Rayo can always be expected to play aggressively in front of their home fans.
Atletico Madrid’s defeat away to Barcelona was a setback to their chances of finishing second in the table, and Diego Simeone will be without midfielders Koke and Marcos Llorente for their home game against Mallorca, a Xinhua report said.
Mallorca secured their place in the elite for next season with a 3-1 win over Getafe at the weekend, and Wednesday could be a favorable moment to face Javier Aguirre’s side.

Madrid, Jan 26 (Ians) The La Liga season reaches its midway point in Spain this weekend, with several clubs involved in the Copa del Rey knockout tournament, facing a pile-up of fixtures in a non-stop beginning to the year.
League leaders Fc Barcelona face a short trip to play Girona, just three days after booking their place in the semifinals of the Cup with a 1-0 win at home to Real Sociedad.
Midfielder Pedri is a slight doubt for the game with a muscle problem that saw him forced off on Wednesday and with another league match against Betis next week. Barca coach Xavi Hernandez may not risk such a key player.
Ferran Torres is available again after suspension, but Robert Lewandowski is out as he serves the last game of a three-match ban.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 30 (Ians) Injuries have affected the plans of Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez ahead of his side’s visit to play Mallorca on Saturday.
The international break saw Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong all pick up injuries (long-term ones in the case of Araujo and Depay), while Kounde and De Jong are unlikely to be fit for Saturday.
To make matters worse for Xavi, right back Hector Bellerin suffered a calf injury in training and is also out of action for between two to three weeks.
That means Sergi Roberto is almost certain to start on the right of the Barcelona defense, although the fact he is recovering from injury means Eric Garcia could be asked to move across from central defense, with Gerard Pique partnering Andreas Christensen at the heart of the back line.

Madrid, Aug 12 (Ians) The 2022-23 La Liga season kicks off in Spain this weekend with some subtle changes to rules and the uncertainty over the effects of a pre-season break for the World Cup finals will cause.
Referees have been told to clamp down on time wasting and add on extra time if needed and (in theory) they should also alter their interpretation of handball in the penalty area, with only clear infractions given as penalties.
The first three rounds of matches won’t have midday or mid-afternoon games due to the probability of hot weather and the season kicks off just as temperatures appear to be easing after the hottest summer on record in Spain, reports Xinhua.
There is also some uncertainty over which players will be able to play in the opening weekend, with several clubs (among them Fc Barcelona) struggling to meet La Liga’s tough financial...

Barcelona production-distribution outfit Filmax is at this year’s L.A. Virtual Screenings with its most recent TV acquisition, Basque drama “Mouths of Sand” (“Hondar ahoak”) from leading regional film production company Txintxua Films, its first foray into TV production.
Originally commissioned by local Basque public TV broadcaster Etb, the series’ global rights were scooped by Filmax after episode one was buzzed up by critics and viewers on social media in its local market. The series fits nicely within the framework of high-end regional content coming from the northern Spanish community, which has had a large success in film production. Representative of that shift, “Mouths of Sand” is directed by Koldo Almandoz, winner of the Best Basque Film award at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2018 with his debut feature “The Deer.”
In “Deer” and earlier short films, Almandoz developed a personal, poetic universe of ghost ships, wildlife and marshes,...

The Board of Trustees of The Latin Recording Academy has appointed Manuel Abud as CEO of the organization effective August 1 as part of its 10-year strategic plan. Outgoing President/CEO Gabriel Abaroa, Jr. will become President Emeritus, a senior advisory role that will include working on assigned strategic projects while assisting the new CEO in the transition.
“I am delighted to have led a succession plan that was designed with professionalism, respect, love and consistency,” said the organization’s Chairman of the Board Eduardo Hütt. “Several candidates were considered to replace Gabriel’s unique leadership style, and we agreed that Manuel Abud meets the established criteria, excelling in ways that guarantee our organization the leadership required to accomplish its goals over the next decade. The plan was carefully executed, and Manuel was groomed over an extended period.”

Spanish horror superstar Paul Naschy has always been on my radar, yet for whatever reason, I’ve never taken the shot. (And sunk the ship? Metaphors are the worst.) So it is with great shame that I’ve spent far too long ignoring this international treasure as my inaugural Naschy, Javier Aguirre’s Hunchback of the Morgue (1973), is a cheeky Frankenstein riff that offers up its own twisted charms.
Released in its native Spain in July, it hit stateside in September of ’75 when Cinemation Industries (owned and run by Jerry Gross, legendary promoter. See: I Drink Your Blood. No, really, see it) added it to double and triple bills across the land. It…didn’t do very well, and that’s not a big surprise; it’s certainly not your traditional monster movie, with a plot that veers between soapy operatics, laboratory hijinks, and all tied together by Naschy’s...

One of the more fascinating aspects of the Spanish horror film is that the country’s most famous exports were produced during the near forty year dictatorial regime of Falangist leader Generalissimo Francisco Franco. In interviews conducted following the passing of the repressive dictator in 1975, actor Paul Naschy (the so-called “Lon Chaney of Spanish horror”) often expressed bemusement regarding the restrictions imposed by Spanish censors on his films. Naschy’s horror films were (arguably, I suppose) of either very modest or completely non-political in their design - if not their subtext.
Paul Naschy (aka Jacinto Molina Alvarez) was greatly influenced by the celebrated cycle of gothic horror and mystery films produced by Universal Studios in the 1930s and 1940s. The primary difference between these monochrome films and those Naschy would lens beginning 1968 is unmistakable: most of his films, including the colorful Count Dracula’s Great Love (1971), owed...

“My momma always said, .Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get..” That line was immortalized by Tom Hanks in the award-winning movie “Forest Gump” in 1994. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today selected that film and 24 others to be preserved as cultural, artistic and historical treasures in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
Spanning the period 1912-1994, the films named to the registry include Hollywood classics, documentaries, animation, home movies, avant-garde shorts and experimental motion pictures. Representing the rich creative and cultural diversity of the American cinematic experience, the selections range from Walt Disney.s timeless classic “Bambi” and Billy Wilder.s “The Lost Weekend,” a landmark film about the devastating effects of alcoholism, to a real-life drama between a U.S. president and a governor over the desegregation of the University of Alabama. I’m never one to put significant stock in the film-based choices made by any kind of committee — be it an awards group, critics circle, soup kitchen line, etc. — but the National Film Registry is a little different. Not that they’re any different than those aforementioned organization types, but because the government assemblage preserves works deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” No small potatoes.
Their latest list — created for both public awareness and the opportunity to grumble, as I’ll do in a second — has been unveiled, and the selections are none too out-of-left-field. The biggest of these 25 would have to be Forrest Gump, a choice I fully understand but completely disagree with on an opinion and moral scale. The only other true objection I can raise is toward El Mariachi, film school-level junk from a director whose finest works are the direct result of working with those more talented.

Artwork courtesy of Espn and the Am I Collective. After making the apparently unwise decision to hire former England coach (and current Ivory Coast coach) Sven-Goran Eriksson in June 2008, Mexico spent the next ten months digging itself into a hole that endangered its World Cup qualification. The following April, the powers that be turned to 2002 savior Javier Aguirre, and he has since made order out of the chaos. Aguirre isn’t the only throwback who will be on the Mexican side this campaign. He has raised 37-year-old striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco from the dead—or international retirement, if you prefer—and his leadership and experience has helped guide a team that has four players from the squad that won the Under-17 World Cup in 2005. Mexico has been in four straight World Cups and never failed to get out of the group stage. It’s even made it to the quarterfinals twice.

"The Hyperion Cantos", is a 'tetralogy' of science fiction novels by author Dan Simmons, recently adapted as a screenplay by Trevor Sands for Sony Pictures. Set in the distant future, the Warners space opera will be directed by Scott "The Day The Earth Stood Still" Derrickson for producer Graham King.
Much of the appeal of the series stems from its extensive use of references and allusions from a wide array of 'thinkers', including Teilhard de Chardin, John Muir, Norbert Wiener and John Keats, a Romantic poet of the 19th century, with the title of the first novel, "Hyperion" taken from Keats' poem "Hyperion". Similarly, the title of Simmons' third novel is from Keats' poem "Endymion". Quotes from actual Keats poems and the fictional 'Cantos of Martin Silenus' are also interspersed throughout the novels.
