It may be so 90s it hurts, but the Highlander TV series spin-off is still very much worth a watch...
You may have seen a few articles about the original Highlander movie recently, as it’s just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Lots of things have turned 30 this year. Just a few examples: The Legend Of Zelda, Pixar, the M25. Fine institutions, but did any of them spawn a mostly superior TV series in 1992? I think not. Don’t let the fact that it was made in the 90s put you off. People still watch Buffy.
The series follows the adventures of Duncan MacLeod (cousin of the movie’s Connor). Explaining the premise of Highlander in complex detail would make me go far over my word count, so I’ll be brief. Basically, immortal sword fighters fight to decapitate each other in order to be the last one...

Over the years, "War of the Worlds" has been interpreted for everything from radio to movies but few stories have imagined the aftermath of what would happen if the Martians decided to invade for a second time. Enter director Joe Pearson and writer David Abramowitz (of Highlander fame) who offer exactly that second invasion scenario in War of the Worlds: Goliath.
In an alternate universe, the Martians came to Earth in 1899 decimating much of the planet before being wiped out by bacteria. In the years since the first invasion, Earth has been vigilantly studying and using Martian technology to create weapons to fend off the Martians should they return for a second attack, and as professor Tesla advises the generals and gathered troops of the Allied Resistance Earth Squadrons [Continued ...]...

It’s been over two years since the last report on David Abramowitz’s steampunk animation War of the Worlds: Goliath. There’s still no known release date, but at least a new trailer found its way into the net.
Synopsis:
In 1900, the Earth was attacked by ruthless invaders from the planet Mars. The Martian’s 80 ft tall, heat-ray spewing, Tripod battle machines laid waste to the planet, but the invaders ultimately fell prey to Earth’s tiny bacteria.
Fourteen years later, Man has rebuilt his shattered world, in large part by utilizing captured Martian technology. Equipped with giant, steam-powered Tripod battle machines, the international rapid reaction force, A.R.E.S., is Mankind’s first line of defense against the return of the rapacious Martian invaders. Based in a massive fortress complex at the south end of Manhattan Island, the young warriors of A.R.E.S. train...

Featuring the voice talents of Adrian Paul, Peter Wingfield, Adam Baldwin, Elizabeth Gracen and Jim Byrnes, the movie is animated with combination of CG and traditional cel animation in what looks to be a steampunk epic!
Currently in production, War of the Worlds: Goliath is scheduled for worldwide release in 2012.

The name Yoshiaki Kawajiri carries some serious weight among anime fans and aficionados. The franchise “Highlander” carries the same weight amongst it’s legions of loyal, sword wielding fans. In 2007 the two came together in a symphony swordplay and beauty. “Highlander: The Search for Vengeance” was a joint effort between Imagi Studios (“Tmnt”) and anime powerhouse Madhouse Studios (“Ninja Scroll,” “X,” “Trigun”) and was one of the recent efforts at a East-Meets-West collaboration on anime with others including Kawajiri’s own “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust” and “Afro Samurai.” This was the first time a Western franchise or concept was adapted to anime, but was followed closely by the “Witchblade” anime. Okay now deep breath. You still with me? Good, because “The Search For Vengeance” is an amazing anime and the best and most interesting thing to happen to the franchise since the TV series. Backed by Ad Hominem and Alexander Payne, hot off The Hangover, Ed Helms will play a sad-sack insurance agent who goes to an industry. convention to try to save the jobs of his colleagues. I imagine the comedy will film in a tax incentive friendly city with a convention center for rent.

In the H.G. Wells original story, Martians spy on the Earth and find it ripe for the picking. They strike at the Earth, finding us humans to be weak and easy prey. They forget just one thing. It’s flu season. And so they plot their return, this time with all their shots. We humans know the Martians will return and so we prepare for the dusty red devils in their poorly balanced machinations. This time we bring the hardware and the fight is on. Below is the trailer for this excellent looking and very adult animated return to the H.G. Wells story. Within are featured giant mech on Tri-Pod action, along with misty eyed children with really tight closeups. Looking.. mighty.. fine! We first reported on this project back in June, but now that the first mech-tastic trailer just dropped today we're even more excited to check out Joe Pearson's War of the Worlds: Goliath.
