Originally based on the book written by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, 1941's Dumbo was the fourth animated feature film made by Walt Disney Productions, following up Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), and Fantasia (1940). Originally conceived as a short film, Dumbo was reworked as a low-budget feature to help recoup the financial losses of Pinocchio and Fantasia. Made for half the cost of Snow White, the 64-minute film turned a profit, earning $1.6 million during its initial release. In addition to box office success, the film garnered some critical acclaim as well, winning Best Original Score at the 14th Academy Awards. Now, 77 years later, Walt Disney Productions is re-introducing the iconic character to a new generation with a live-action remake directed by Tim Burton. While the original film is told through the eyes of the titular flying elephant, the remake, written by Ehren Kruger, isn't as interested in charming...

There are a number of best-case scenarios involving Tim Burton directing a live-action “Dumbo” remake. He could give us a hero who is physically unusual on the outside but possessing the soul of a poet, like Edward Scissorhands. He could lean into the 1920s circus atmosphere and create another sinister but seductively designed world.
What we get instead feels more like a lesser 1970s Disney live-action comedy about an animal who can do an extraordinary thing, and the mean people who want to steal him. Burton and his collaborators took the beautiful and moving “Dumbo” and somehow managed to turn it into a throwaway kiddie adventure like “Gus” or “Million Dollar Duck.”
Granted, like many filmmakers who have tried to stretch, say, a lovely 20-page children’s book into a three-act cinematic structure, Burton and screenwriter Ehren Kruger are remaking a beloved film that’s a scant 64 minutes long. (Both...

Drunken pink elephants have no place in a childrens' movie, but they provide the key moment in the best animated film of all time
• More Why I Love … Celine Bijleveld on Human Traffic's titles, Martin Pengelly on the Jeff Daniels character in The Squid and the Whale, Andrew Pulver on the first fight in Fight Club, and Xan Brooks on non-professional actors
I can't believe Pink Elephants on Parade exists. It's a five-minute indulgence in a film that lasts just over an hour. A bizarro squeal of throwaway surrealism that somehow becomes the turning point of Dumbo, the greatest animated film of all time.
Dumbo was made as Disney faced disaster. Pinocchio and Fantasia had flopped at the box office. The little story about a misfit elephant with bedsheet-sized ears was the quick, cheap money-spinner – a speedy knock-off of Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl's children's book that had to save the studio.

We live in a world of sequels, remakes and adaptations, a world where the only truly original films coming out seem to be from the animation studios. Films like Brave, Rio and Wreck-It Ralph are the last original films that studios feel comfortable enough about to invest in.
But does this tradition stretch all the way back to the very beginnings of animated features? We all recall the Disney back catalogue with reverence but are these films unique to the family-favorite animation studio? The answer is no.
Here are the ten Disney animated films we were most surprised to discover were shameless rip-offs.
10. Dumbo
Synonymous with the family-friendly Disney marketing schemes as any viewer of the old Disney-vhs tapes will recall (Do you see how much the DVD image is improved as opposed to the VHS one?) Dumbo is surely a Disney-tale through and through. In fact the story of...

Chicago – The recently-released Blu-ray edition of “Dumbo” not only contains one of the best digital restorations in the history of animation but it includes never-before-seen storyboards and “deleted scenes” from one of Disney’s most timeless and beloved classics. Most of all, this critic was struck by how well “Dumbo” has held up in its 70th anniversary edition. The film remains one of the most enjoyable and delightful pieces of animation ever produced. It is a must-own for not just all Disney fans but all Blu-ray owners, period.

They’re slowly working their way through their vaults (although a little more quickly with passing time as both this title and “The Lion King” will debut on the format in less than a month’s time).
