A few months back, I reviewed a direct to DVD horror release called The Last Resort. Stuck for words about the film’s confusing plot and shaky logic, I started pontificating about the differences between this generation’s direct-to-dvd horror releases and their spiritual heirs, the low-budget sci-fi films of the fifties. I commented that something sincere had been lost between now and then, and now, with The Hills Run Red, I have had that idea exemplified in a way far more eloquent than I stated then. It’s not that the movie is especially good, because it isn’t, but in its aspirations towards wit and its slavish devotion to the slasher films of yesteryear, it reveals more about the gradual shift in horror’s values than an essay or review probably ever could.
According to the opening title graphics, The Hills Run Red came out in the early 1980s, »

Four months ago I attended an advance screening of The Hills Run Red, a Warner Premier straight-to-dvd film about a group of college kids in search of a cult director and his long-lost horror film of the same name. Long story short, I really didn't like it, but I found myself in the minority, so in the interest of fairness, I spent the next couple of months asking colleagues who saw it why they seemed to like it so much.
Because I never really got an answer that satisfied my lingering questions and criticisms, I decided to watch it again. And while the film's premise - obsessive horror geeks rediscovering a lost horror classic that was banished for being too intense - is a really, really terrific one, director Dave Parker's latest effort is not equal to that premise. A mess of half-considered genre conventions with only a few compelling ideas to connect them, »

Stephen King always referred to his classic 1980 novella The Mist as his "black and white Bert I. Gordon bug movie." At the Long Beach Comic Con this weekend, when the film he was going to run, Give 'Em Hell Malone, got hung up over rights issue, a funny, shoeless Thomas Jane substituted it for a big screen showing of The Mist in black and white!
"This is my favorite way of seeing this movie," Jane said. "It's the ultimate version of the movie! Frank (Darabont) feels it should be seen this way, too. I loved playing the main character--David Drayton, the hero--every decision he makes is totally wrong!"
After the grim ending, Thomas Jane joked "That's a real party starter, huh? I love the movie. Unfortunately, they released the movie at Thanksgiving--which was obviously the wrong time of year for this kind of movie."

We've all heard the story of the lost film; that old horror classic that mysteriously and tragically falls through the cracks never to be seen again. A handful of them, such as the often bereaved London After Midnight, go on to attain a legendary status that was likely only made possible by their very absence. But what if, what if, some old forgotten film did carry the whisper of something dark, something real, something fat, deadly, and wanting its mother. Some mysteries are best left sleeping.
Horror geek Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrink) has deaf ears for any such advice. The Hills Run Red is a lost film; a notorious slasher that disappeared without a trace after a very small screening many years ago. Hungry to gain some notoriety by finding the missing treasure, he tracks down the promiscuous and drugged out stripper daughter (Sophie Monk) of the film's director (William Sadler), sobers the girl up, »

.That is hardcore. That is hardcore!. A group of teens go in search of a legendary lost film and finds that instead of a fiction that the murderous killer is all too real. In 1982, Wilson Wyler Concannon (William Sadler) made a movie so shocking and horrific that it only played in several theaters before Concannon and his film disappeared. Only a battered trailer remains. The movie, The Hills Run Red, has become legend. Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck) is obsessed with finding the film. He tracks down Concannon.s junkie daughter Alexa (Sophie Monk) and weans her off heroin (in record time by the way). She appeared in the film as a child and is soon remembering bits »

The Hills Run Red (just out on DVD from Warner Premiere) is about the quest to track down a lost horror film of the same title, one supposedly so shocking that our protagonist is obsessed with witnessing its full, terrible vision. And yet this Hills has been issued in an R-rated cut only, with references on the audio commentary to scenes its creators wanted to include, but were too gruesome. Irony?
Nevertheless, there’s enough on view in Hills Run Red to push that R to its limits, and to justify its title. Before the plot even kicks in, we witness a young boy bloodily slicing up his own face before we’re introduced to aforementioned fright buff Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck, taking a giant step up from his previous Warner Premiere flick, Lost Boys: The Tribe). Having devoted himself to researching The Hills Run Red’s strange history, and seen »

The Hills Run Red (Thrr) is a modestly-budgeted but effective gore fest about the search for a legendary 'lost' horror film of the same title, a movie that was supposedly so notorious and disturbing it was only screened once before disappearing from the face of the earth...as did it's entire cast and iconic director Wilson Wyler Concannon. Concannon (embodied to sinister perfection by William Sadler) had a peculiar but dedicated idea of how to bring realistic horror to the screen, and he apparently put everything he had into his one and only production about a sadistic and ghoulish-looking masked killer called 'Babyface'. The only surviving remnant of the film is a cleverly made trailer we see at the... »

Australian actress Sophie Monk isn't accustomed to doing genre work. In fact, she's primarily known for being in comedies and of course for being a former pop star in her native country. However, when she was offered the chance to play Alexa Concannon, the daughter of long-missing horror director William Concannon (William Sadler) in The Hills Run Red , she saw a rare opportunity to portray a multi-faceted character, unlike what she'd been offered in the past or what you'd find in the average horror film. Shock Till You Drop got a chance to chat with Monk about tackling this character, working with director Dave Parker in Bulgaria and what it was like to go face to face with Hills masked maniac, Babyface. Read on for the interview! Robg.: You've primarily done comedies up... »

Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption
Photo: Warner Bros.
It's odd to say, but when I think about The Shawshank Redemption I think about love. It's a dark tale to be sure; of wrongly convicted men (according to the inmates, the prison is chockfull of them), some nasty prison guards, an even nastier warden, institutionalization, prison rape and most robustly, hope. At its core, however, is this story of friendship. And the one between Red and Andy is one of the great friendships in movie history. It begins formally and specifically and you think you know where it's all going, but it surprises you along the way and before long a saga unfolds. The film spans many years, characters come and go but there is always Red and Andy. Darkness looms over all the characters in Shawshank and much of the movie is about Andy and Red fighting that darkness. »
