Scott Waugh’s Need For Speed movie may not have lit up the box office in the way DreamWorks, Aaron Paul or even the director himself would have hoped in 2014 – succumbing to the age-old video-game-to-movie curse that has lingered over Hollywood for a generation – but Waugh has dusted himself off and has now emerged to direct a new thriller for Sierra/Affinity, titled Blackout.
Written by Sidney King with Brooks McLaren providing some final touch ups, Waugh’s latest foray behind the camera will involve high-speed pursuits and tense shootouts. It’s a darker, slightly edgier vehicle than Need for Speed – no pun intended – telling the tale of a do-gooder cop tasked with transporting an ominous criminal across the city. It is, for all intents and purposes, a routine trip that the yet-to-be-cast protagonist could do without thinking, but when a power outage thrusts the entire area into a seemingly perpetual Blackout,...

What do you get when you combine sharks and a tornado, and then remove the sharks? You get Into the Storm, an upcoming disaster movie that is curiously free of man-eating fish, fish-eating octopi, octopi-eating megalodons, or any recognizable actors. The result is a pretty generic-looking movie that seems aimed primarily at the kind of people who watch The Weather Channel hoping to see someone swept out to sea.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures is acquiring Go Fast, an action vehicle that will be written by Rich Wilkes for Kick-Ass 2 helmer Jeff Wadlow to direct. I’m told that the title refers to the fast boats that are used by DEA agents to thwart drug smugglers on the high seas. What The Fast And The Furious did with cars, the film intends to do for these lightning-fast water crafts. Broken Road’s Todd Garner is producing. This becomes the second big studio project for Wadlow, who is also writing to direct X-Force, another spinoff of Marvel’s X-Men franchise, which is being developed by 20th Century Fox. Wadlow directed his first studio film in Kick-Ass 2 after writing the sequel and getting the blessing to direct it from rights holder Matthew Vaughn, who helmed the original. Wadlow this week brings Kick-Ass 2 to San Diego, introducing the cast at Comic-Con.

Exclusive: Relativity Media has acquired House Arrest, a spec script by Justin Adler about two high-end bond traders whose plan to end their marriage hits a snag when they are forced to live together for six months of house arrest. Broken Road’s Todd Garner, Sean Robins and Jeremy Stein developed the project and will produce the film. Adler recently wrote The Escort, a spec that sold to DreamWorks. Adler comes out of TV, where he was consulting producer on Samantha Who?, and a co-executive producer on Sons And Daughters. He’s repped by UTA, Kapital Entertainment and attorney Ken Richman.

Exclusive: Lionsgate/Summit has won an auction for Spinback, a John Swetnam spec script action thriller set in the world of electronic dance music. Scott Speer (Step Up Revolution) is attached to direct, with Todd Garner producing through his Broken Road Productions banner, with Sean Robins and Jeremy Stein. Garner hatched the idea, which, boiled down is: soldier returns from Afghanistan. When his brother, a prominent DJ on the Edm circuit, is murdered, he must infiltrate that world in order to figure out the killer. The project aspires to have a fast-paced niche subculture vibe reminiscent of The Fast And The Furious and XXX. Speer is currently at work with Swetnam on the next installment of Step Up at Summit, so it’s easy to see why the studio wanted this project. Swetnam most recently worked with Garner on Black Sky, the New Line natural disaster project which sold under the working title Category 6.

Exclusive: Nick Meyer’s Sierra/Affinity has committed to finance Blackout, an action thriller script by Sidney King. Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner will produce with Sierra/Affinity, and Broken Road’s Jeremy Stein will be exec producer. A cop tasked with transporting a mysterious and dangerous criminal across town finds that job much more difficult when a city-wide blackout plunges them into darkness and chaos. For Meyer, who called the script “a strong and smart action thriller,” the deal signals Sierra/Affinity’s commitment to building a production slate from the ground up. Sierra/Affinity’s next big film is Parker, the Taylor Hackford-directed drama that stars Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis and Clifton Collins Jr. That film will be released by FilmDistrict in January. King is repped by UTA and Industry. Sierra/Affinity’s Kelly McCormick will oversee Blackout.

Exclusive: Ending what turned out to be a brisk week for material, New Line Cinema just closed a spec deal in the $300,000 range for Category Six, a script by John Swetnam for a “found footage” natural disaster movie. The film takes a first-person Pov through video cameras and cell phones to tell the story of high school students who try to survive the worst tornado in U.S. history. The film will be produced by Todd Garner through his Broken Road banner. Garner hatched the idea. David Boxerbaum at Apa and Jake Wagner made the deal. Broken Road’s Jeremy Stein and Sean Robins will also be involved in producing capacities. The material market has been sluggish until recently, but this is the latest in a flurry of specs and pitches that sold this week. In fact, Category Six is the second one today that deals with extreme weather: Fox...

With the seventh entry in Lionsgate’s Saw film franchise poised for release this October 22, 2010, Dread caught up with the film’s co-writer Patrick Melton to chat about his other projects, namely the currently-in-development The Collector 2 (the sequel to his co-writer Marcus Dunstan’s 2009 directorial debut and Liddell Entertainment release), as well as the status of the pair’s re-animating of the classic series The Outer Limits for MGM.
“The script is done, and we're barreling towards formal pre-production in terms of doing the budget and figuring out where we're going to shoot,” states Melton regarding The Collector 2. “It very well may be Detroit, which works perfectly with where the story goes, but we're not totally sure just yet. The script is very ambitious, and thankfully the budget is going to be bigger than on the original. It should be pretty wild.”
No word yet on the premise although a horror-crime thriller hybrid approach,...

MGM’s recent public financial woes have put the futures of potential cash cow franchises like “James Bond” and “The Hobbit” in question.
But instead of pushing through one or both of those projects to earn some almost guaranteed cash, Variety is reporting that the struggling studio has decided to produce a bigscreen adaptation of “The Outer Limits,” a sci-fi television series that aired on ABC from 1963-65.
MGM has apparently been quietly but rapidly moving forward on the project with writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (writers of four of the seven “Saw” movies) already on board.
The news that MGM would greenlight an adaptation of a relatively obscure 60s TV show is shocking considering the studio is barely alive after six extensions on debt payments from its 140 creditors. The fact that development on the highly anticipated “The Hobbit” and a new “James Bond” film have been halted adds...

Despite its future looking as bleak as the contents of European arthouse cinema, MGM is developing a film adaptation of classic 60's sci-fi anthology series "The Outer Limits" says Variety.
Scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan ("Feast," "Saw" series) began work on the script last month with their draft due in October. An MGM spokesman claims the pair were hired well before the studio's current financial woes.
It's unsure what format the project will take. Much like "The Twilight Zone", the series was an anthology of discrete story episodes usually a plot twist at the end.
The show was revived in 1995 on Showtime and later the Sci-Fi Channel. Mark Victor, Jon Shestack and Jeremy Stein are producing the film adaptation.

It's an entertainment news story that seems more science fiction than reality -- and that's counting the business side of it.
Beleagured movie studio MGM -- which is in such deep financial trouble that it caused the shutdown on the next James Bond movie and for one director to leave The Hobbit -- is developing a feature film based on the 1960s sci-fi series The Outer Limits. Apparently MGM had enough money coming in from its library of titles that it could write a check to screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the duo behind the last four Saw movies and the creators of Dimension Films' Feast monster movie series. Trade magazine Variety reports that MGM paid the writers somewhere around $500K to come up with a way to turn the classic one-hour anthology series into a three act movie structure.
