Rock’s friskiest couple Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox are back with a brand-new edition of their “Sunday Lunch” performance series. This time around, the King Crimson guitarist and the new wave singer deliver a lickin’ good version of the Iggy & The Stooges classic “Search and Destroy.”
Sporting matching mohawks, the married pair pay homage to the godfather of punk, Iggy Pop, with a playful rendition of the Raw Power tune. Robert plays the song’s iconic guitar licks while Toyah sings and dances seductively around her husband. It all culminates with Toyah slowly licking the side of Robert’s face.
The ever-youthful Robert and Toyah just celebrated their 78th and 66th birthdays on May 16th and May 18th, respectively. They’ve been entertaining fans with their “Sunday Lunch” series for four years now.

In an era where music production is often tempo’d to a click track, Tool remain steadfast in keeping their rhythm tracks as organic as possible.
Drummer Danny Carey revealed that the band has never recorded to a click, explaining why Tool opt for an old-school “live in the studio” approach to recording drums in a new interview with YouTuber Rick Beato (as transcribed by Metal Injection).
“We go to a big room to capture the drums… We’ll go to a place like Ocean Way or O’Henry — someplace that has a million dollars worth of microphones and a big beautiful room,” Carey said. “And then, our goal is just to capture the drum tracks, and we all play together. We’ll agree on a tempo, and we’ll start a click in our heads. And then, as soon as I count it off, we’re just playing.”

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have unveiled their first-ever collaborative song, “The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1.”
The guitar wizards have shared the stage many times over the years as part of Satriani’s G3 tours, and recently kicked off their co-headlining “Satch/Vai” tour. However, the new single marks the first time the two have made a song together. Based on comments by Satriani in the press release, it appears to be part of a forthcoming album and the first movement in a three-part suite.

An animated video for Mark Knopfler’s all-star charity single “Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)” – which brought together a stunning lineup of over 60 guitar gods to raise funds for Teen Cancer America and the Teenage Cancer Trust – has been released. It features the final recording of Jeff Beck along with contributions by Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmour, Slash, Ronnie Wood, Joan Jett, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, and Sting.
The song came out a week ago, but it was difficult to discern who was playing what part throughout the ten-minute song.

It’s easy to draw a lot of conclusions from the title of Ozzy Osbourne’s new single with friend Billy Morrison, “Crack Cocaine,” without listening to it. But the singer says it’s more nuanced than that. “The song’s not about crack cocaine,” the Prince of Darkness tells Rolling Stone on a call from his L.A. home. “It’s about being in love with a chick. But it’s kind of what you might think Ozzy Osbourne would do. It’s, like, the two loves in my life: drugs and women.

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

Spin̈al Tap bassist Derek Smalls is back with his first new song in five years: “Must Crush Barbie.”
Nope — Smalls isn’t buying Barbie mania following the release of the blockbuster film this summer. Smalls called it the “embodiment of lukewarm water,” and in his press release, the new song is described as an “excoriating attack on the pink sensation” and a “much-needed antidote to the ubiquitous pinkness that has spilled out of movie theatres this summer and onto the high streets with wall-to-wall media coverage.”
“Must Crush Barbie” is indeed a cantankerous takedown of the Mattel fashion doll brand and the subsequent film. Based around a guitar riff that sounds vaguely like the old Batman television theme, Smalls bellows into the mic such phrases as “wasted film and ink” and “too much pink,” making his point in as few words as possible. The classic Spin̈al Tap sound is alive and well.

Joe Satriani is best known as the guitar virtuoso who plumbs the outer regions of space for music which needs no words. His instrumental progression has only yielded a few songs with lyrics, but they tell stories. Satriani’s most recentrecord, The Elephants of Mars, is basically a travelog, which includes a dip in the waters beneath Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. But many Den of Geek readers might remember him as the talent behind a towering ‘90s instrumental record which featured a surprising visual connection to the Marvel Universe.
Satriani’s 1987 album Surfing with the Alien has nothing to do with surf music, a musical genre which produced quite a few brilliant guitarists, or even the Marvel character Silver Surfer. Released on October 15, 1987, Satriani’s second album featured the famed Marvel hero on the front cover and the hand of Galactus on the back, as illustrated by John Byrne.

We're in a full-blown "Karate Kid" renaissance era. The franchise that started with "The Karate Kid" in 1984 not only got three sequels and later a remake in 2010, but it spawned the series "Cobra Kai," which began on YouTube and ended up on Netflix. The first film was the story of young Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), who just moved with his mom to Los Angeles from the East Coast. He gets bullied by Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), a student at the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and meets a mentor in Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita), who teaches him how to defend himself.
"Cobra Kai" not only gave audiences a chance to see what happened to Lawrence and Larusso later in life, but it brought back characters from the first three films. It's been a huge hit with fans, who remember the first film with tremendous amounts of love. Now Macchio...

The 2021 Grammys were an awards show like none before them, in countless ways — and although opinions are mixed about what worked and what didn’t, the consensus seem to be largely positive, with inevitable caveats.
Perhaps most of all, the way the Grammys chose to handle the “In Memoriam” segment, which on most awards shows is fraught with omissions and misspellings and ensuing outrage, received some of the most positive reactions — especially considering the fact that, after the awful past year, nearly a thousand names were considered for the segment, according to host Trevor Noah.
Yet the brief segment paying tribute to Eddie Van Halen, who died in October at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer, has gotten a fair amount of abuse, particularly from the band’s substantial fan base in the hard rock and metal world. The tribute featured a 20-ish-second video of a typically...

There is no such thing as a casual Frank Zappa fan — it’s an all-or-nothing proposition. (Really, there’s no such thing as a casual Frank Zappa listener, period: You either immediately recoil from his grandiose, often goofy odes to dancin’ fools and yellow snow, self-promoting pimps and and S&m aficionados … or you end friendships arguing over which bootleg of his Over Nite Sensation ’73 shows is the best.) And on a scale from one to plays-in-a-Joe’s-Garage-cover-band, we’d put Alex Winter’s level of worship somewhere near an eight.

Alex Winter’s musical documentary Zappa is a fun movie which frames Frank Zappa the way he should be, as a hero. While this may ring particularly true for fans of the original Mother of Invention, the film is also a must-see for anyone who plugged in a guitar, banged drums, pounded a piano, ruined their teeth on clarinet reeds, or waited for their triangle part to come up in a Julliard School of Music chamber ensemble. It is also for social justice warriors stretching to see beyond the warning labels. The feature documentary is an intimate look at an artist who defied labels, both the record industry ones which curtailed output, and the easy, cheesy, tags of pundits, critics and frightened senate committees.

Alex Winter has had a busy year with the release of Bill and Ted Face The Music released earlier this year. Winter is an actor that kids from the 80s would best recognize as being one of the vampires in the cult hit The Lost Boys. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure came out in 1989 giving a generation of kids theirs own language. Winter had been busy behind the camera as well as being in front of it. He has directed many documentaries over the past three decades. His latest project should interest many music fans. A film about the private life and times of musician Frank Zappa is about to get released and looks really compelling. With unfettered access to the Zappa family trust and all archival footage, Zappa explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex...

The thing about artists is that their life’s work is objective. It remains once they’re gone. Few other career paths can claim that since money doesn’t count. You don’t make money. Some earn it. Some steal it. Some do everything in their power to avoid its hold on their lives beyond the basic need for survival. And by all accounts, Frank Zappa was keenly aware of that distinction. He knew what was necessary to help raise a family and what was necessary to feed his creative process. Money was therefore not the endgame, but instead a crucial raw material. That which came in went out to build what truly mattered: a legacy on vinyl, paper, and tape. He created as a compulsion, not as an enterprise.

Why did the electric guitar last so long as rock’s defining instrument? “You can’t bend the strings of a piano,” Van Halen says.

Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen were not the most likely of friends. After David Lee Roth acrimoniously left Van Halen in 1985, Roth recruited Vai — an Eddie Van Halen–inspired, finger-tapping virtuoso — for his solo band. Vai played on Roth’s albums Eat ‘Em and Smile and Skyscraper – and tackled Eddie Van Halen’s guitar parts on tour. That created a bit of awkwardness between Vai and his guitar hero, Van Halen. But the day Vai left Roth’s band in 1989, Eddie called him up. It was the beginning of a deep friendship.

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as Bill and Ted for another adventure in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” on-demand and in theaters on Aug. 28, and their quest this time is to find a song they wrote and save the world through music.
But what’s the story behind that song? It took a village to put it together and numerous passes to bring the eight-minute spectacle together. Spearheading the process was music supervisor Jonathan Leahy.
Below, he breaks down how important it was to find the right guitar shredder and follow in Steven Vai’s footsteps, and how he found the right musicians to accurately riff off the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Louis Armstrong.
So, no pressure: How did you create the song that saves the universe?

With Bill & Ted Face the Music finally upon us, it’s such a great feeling to revisit two of the most lovable characters around. There’s something special about the characters Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter brought to life (thanks to some excellent writing from Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson), something that allowed viewers to immediately latch onto the absent-minded, but well-intended metalhead duo. While many jump to the assumption that, like Cheech & Chong, Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan are your run-of-the-mill, cliché-laden stoners, that’s never been the case. What drives Bill and Ted throughout the entire series isn’t smoking and scoring pot, no, it’s a sincere, genuine love for rock and roll. There is such an affinity for the music which drives them, that true to from, it takes a while to realize that your love for the music that moves you should...

For a reason that can only be described as “It’s 2020,” Nickelback have released a cover of the Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Ostensibly a tribute to Daniels, who died in July, everyone’s favorite (sic) Canadian rock band strips the fiddle from both the song and its narrative, transforming the protagonist Johnny from a country-bumpkin fiddle phenom into a dive-bar guitar shredder.

Lee Mendelson, the prolific Emmy-winning producer of more than 50 animated Peanuts TV specials, including A Charlie Brown Christmas, has died. He was 86.
Mendelson died on Christmas Day in Hillsborough, California, following a protracted battle with lung cancer, his family told the Palo Alto Daily Post.
Mendelson imported comic strip characters Cathy and Garfield to television success but his signature career moment came in December 1965 when he brought Charles Schulz’s legendary Peanuts characters to the small screen in A Charlie Brown Christmas. The half-hour animated special with the $96,000 budget aired originally on CBS and would become a beloved touchstone of the holiday season, yield a bestselling jazz album, and win the Emmy and Peabody awards.
Mendelson also wrote the lyrics to the 1965 special’s ethereal Christmas Time Is Here, with music composed by Vince Guaraldi and performed by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

When John Lydon begins a warm and humorous conversation by saying, “Hello, I am very much alive for anyone who is interested — don’t worry though, I’ve been working hard at not being,” you know he’s taking the piss. For all of his notorious snark and cynicism, the thing that comes through loudest in his post-Rotten, post-Sex Pistols career with Public Image Ltd. (a.k.a. PiL) is how joyful and hard-working he is, and how ebulliently he speaks of those who’ve stuck with him — including his wife, Nora Forster, and this longest-ever line-up of PiL, with whom he’s collaborated for ten years.
That unity hasn’t always been there, which is the point of the recently released and currently screening Lydon/PiL documentary, “The Public Image is Rotten.” Then again, it’s been that mash-up of musicians, old pals and frenemies that have made up what is 40 years of PiL,...
