I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap. Even a powerhouse studio like Disney lost its way over the years long after the passing of its founder. They hit a great stride »

It’s been five years since Disney released their last 2D animated feature, Home on the Range and here at Boxwish, we’ve really missed the imaginative art form and so are getting steadily excited by its return with The Princess and the Frog (December in the Us, February 2010 in the UK). And like many of the Disney classics from yonder year, it looks set to boast a soundtrack rich with musical classics. Think Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning triumphs for The Lion King, the infectious catchiness of the tunes from The Jungle Book or some of the more romantic numbers from Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast. Yup, the House of Mouse has history when it comes to toe-tapping musical numbers and looks to add to its illustrious past with this latest addition courtesy of Disney•Pixar stalwart, Randy Newman. »

Today's birthday list doesn't make me feel celebratory so much as oscarighteously furious. Perhaps I should explain. It's only the four first birthday boys whipping me into a golden frenzy. Then things calm down.
Claude, Ann and Dick
Todays Birthdays 11/10
1889 Claude Rains, never won an Oscar. This despite being a great screen actor, whose filmography reads like a catalogue of Golden Age greatness. He's an actor who made indelible contributions to not 1, not 2 but 7 Best Picture nominees, a number that doesn't even reflect films like Notorious, Now Voyager, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Mrs. Skeffington or The Greatest Story Ever Told. He didn't even get an honorary statue!
1925 Richard Burton, never won an Oscar. This despite winning exactly as many nominations as Liz Taylor won husbands.
1928 Ennio Moriccone has never won an Oscar. This despite being a world reknowned composer, being worshipped by film fanatics and revolutionizing how people scored Westerns. »

Q: I´ve been reading the Kathy Griffin book and while it was much less fun than I was hoping for, there was something that really annoyed me -- besides the fact that in her world "the gays" is a synonym for hair dresser or shopping buddy. Kinda makes me wish she´d actually let me at her hair to change that attitude. Anyway, in the book she says that Andy Dick got punched in the face by Wesley Snipes for using (and I quote) "the n-word" in a club. Later there is another Dick story about one of his stand-up appearances where he called the audience repeatedly (and I quote again) "faggots.” So why isn´t it "the n-word" and "the f-word" Or "nigger" and "faggot"? -- Thomas, »

With the recent success of big screen musicals like Mamma Mia! and Disney's youth-oriented High School Musical series, it makes sense that Universal would be looking to assemble another musical that meets somewhere in the middle. And hey, if they can get all the religious groups on board at the same time, well then it doesn't get much better than that! Word on the street is that they are actively developing a remake of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar with producer Marc Platt (Wanted, Nine, Legally Blonde). They've now got a director in their sights as well: 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog [1], Webb is interested in the project, and based on his music video background the studio is hoping that he can produce "a modern, hipstery take" on the original. Ugh... the thought »

In the Universal Pictures-centric Wrap Up this week:
There are some Funny People at the top of the box office; Ron Howard puts together the pieces of Robert Ludlum’s Parsifal Mosaic; Judd Apatow’s films are now Universal; Charlize Theron is Florence of Arabia; Jesus Christ Superstar has been 2000 years in the making and there’ll be some action on The Lords Day (not a religious film!).
Box Office
It looks like the Judd Apatow brand may be losing some power. The Adam Sandler-headlined dramedy, Funny People, grossed just over $22 million this weekend.
With a reported $70 million budget, the film will need strong legs and good international sales to see any sort of profitability. The films serious subject matter (cancer) and long running time (2 ½ hours) are some of the main reasons cited for the lack-lustre opening.

Universal Pictures is currently in talks with "500 Days of Summer" director Marc Webb to helm the studio's upcoming "Jesus Christ Superstar" remake. Universal and producer Marc Platt are in active development on the project. The original 1973 film is based on Tim Rice's Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera that appeared on Broadway one year prior and became a media sensation for its quality and controversy. It tells the story of the final six days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot. "500 Days of Summer" is Webb's first feature film, but contains bits of a musical. In one scene, Joseph Gordon-Levitt dances down the streets of downtown Los Angeles to Hall and Oates' "You Make My Dreams" as a group forms to dance around him. »

Last year, Mama Mia! did well for Universal, so according to the RiskyBiz Blog the studio is looking to find musical harmony again with a revamp of Jesus Christ Superstar. They're talking to the director who has recently made a splash with (500) Days of Summer, Marc Webb. The blog speculates on "a modern, hipstery take," which makes me shudder. (Let me guess: it'll shoot at McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn.) But I have relatively little familiarity with either the original Broadway show or the film (Andrew Lloyd Webber and I don't really suit one another) so I can't speculate as to whether that's a good idea or a terrible one. In 1972 the Tim Rice / Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway show generated a smash soundtrack album, and Norman Jewison's film followed the year after. Both versions are products of the '70s, with hippie influences and, more important, an open-minded »

The controversial but acclaimed musical — based on Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber's heavily stylized rock opera that arrived on Broadway one year prior — hit theaters in 1973, and typified the music and pop culture of the early '70s. Under the helm of legendary director Norman Jewison, it told the story of the final six days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot.

An eccentric and rarely-seen gay classic makes its DVD debut this week, alongside another season of South of Nowhere, a show-tune fave and a series of movies for people who get shushed in theaters.

The 1957 film version of The Strange One turns up on DVD with several censored scenes — which suggested homosexuality — restored, but it's still a fascinatingly odd duck. Cassavetes favorite Ben Gazzara makes a riveting screen debut as, I kid you not, Jocko de Paris, an oily manipulator at an all-boys' military academy. George Peppard and Pat Hingle co-star in the film, which was written by Calder Willingham, based on his novel End as a Man. Vito Russo extensively discussed the chopped-up Strange One in The Celluloid Closet; one can only wonder what he'd make of this director's cut.
Also new to DVD is Chess in Concert, featuring the vocal talents of Josh Groban »
