One Good Scare? Whoop-doo!
Rydell the Golden Weiner (a 10 month half lab-half dachshund), has spent the better part of an hour barking at an old Doritos bag drifting in the dark, wet field behind my house. A gust of wind just blew this weird cellophane creature over the fence, giving my poor pooch a terrifying holiday fright.
It's Halloween weekend and I want to be that scared. It's been far too long since something jumped out from behind the closet door, filling me with night terrors. I thought Paranormal Activity would do the trick. But seriously? I saw scarier shit in the shoebox apartment I used to rent out in Burbank. The film gets a Boo! from The Whoop-Doo Nation elite. It's well made for what it is. Sure. But its four good (tiny) scares are all given away in the trailer. There is nothing in the film that makes »

Poltergeist (1982) Synopsis: A young family are visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter. Left with no other options, the family invites various experts to their home to try and retrieve their daughter and get away from their not-so-safe abode. Killer Scene: As I observed upon watching this film for the first time in a long time (see below for the rest of the story), it is one of the few truly great and terrifying horror films in which no one actually dies. At least, not during the runtime of the film. It involves plenty of dead people, all of whom died a long time ago, but no one actually dies (spoiler alert, straight from the early 80s). However, there is one badass scene in which the »

Chicago – Just as “My Best Friend’s Wedding” existed solely to provide Julia Roberts with a career comeback, “The Proposal” aimed to prove that Sandra Bullock still has what it takes to headline a romantic comedy. In that regard, it succeeded admirably.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Audiences flocked to it, though Bullock may have lost some returning fans with her other summer release, the disastrous “All About Steve.” What often makes her screen presence so endearing is the earthiness and self-deprecation that brings texture to her good looks. As silly as her “Miss Congeniality” films were, they presented a female protagonist who chose her individuality over the stereotypical feminine qualities that often win trophies at beauty pageants. In “The Proposal,” Bullock plays another woman unwilling to compromise her strong personality…that is, until the plot kicks in.
The Proposal was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on October 13th, 2009.

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!
Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.
A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large. »

Production on new TV drama Parenthood is back on track - actress Lauren Graham has stepped in to replace breast cancer sufferer Maura Tierney.
Former E.R. star Tierney was forced to pull out of the upcoming series in July after she was diagnosed with the disease, bringing shooting to a halt.
Helen Hunt had been tipped to pick up where Tierney left off, but Graham has been chosen as the star's replacement.
The Bad Santa star will portray a single mother of two teenage kids who moves in with her parents - the same character Tierney played in the pilot episode.
Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard and Bonnie Bedelia are also part of the ensemble cast. »

NBC's new Parenthood series is a new take on Ron Howard's 1989 light-hearted drama. It revolves around four adult siblings and their parents and the pilot stars Peter Krause, Maura Tierney, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, and Craig T. Nelson.
The show was supposed to debut in September but a couple months ago, it was reported that production on Parenthood was being delayed. Tierney was diagnosed with breast cancer and a decision was made to wait while she recuperated from surgery. A month ago, Tierney dropped out of the project completely because she needs ongoing treatments.
That news sent casting directors scrambling to find a suitable replacement for the pivotal role. Mad About You's Helen Hunt was initially approached for the part but ultimately a deal couldn't be made with Academy Award-winning actress.
Now, another TV show veteran has »

Plot: Margaret (Bullock) is going to get deported back to Canada, that is until she comes up with an idea … marry her assistant (Reynolds). Now the two are off to Alaska to meet his family, to try and prove this is a real engagement and they’re very much in love. What could go wrong? Answer: many things.
Who’S It For? If you are blinded by the romantic comedy genre then line up, but the film depends a little too much on awkward situations revolving around Bullock, than any sort of romantic connection between the two leads.

Welcome back to my TV, finally, Lorelai! Ok, fine, so she won’t be playing Lorelai Gilmore. But Lauren Graham is coming back to TV as the replacement for Maura Tierney in the upcoming NBC series Parenthood.
Lauren finalized a deal on Friday to take over for Maura, who left the production to undergo treatment for breast cancer. Helen Hunt has been in talks to take over the part earlier, but they fell through. So Lauren stepped into the role of Sarah, a single mom raising two teens who moves back with her parents in Berkeley.
This is Lauren’s first return to TV since Gilmore Girls ended in 2007 after seven seasons. Her previous comeback attempt in a sitcom playing a self-help guru, was never picked up. She joins a large ensemble cast in the hour-long family dramedy that includes Six Feet Under alum Peter Krause, Coach star Craig T. Nelson, »

From director Anne Fletcher and writer Pete Chiarelli comes a very funny romantic comedy (think chick-flick here) staring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Bullock and Reynolds cast their charismatic magic on-screen with the help of a really good supporting cast that includes Betty White, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, and Oscar Nunez (The Office). The premise seems simple enough: Bullock plays Margaret, a hard-working CEO-type of a publishing company (think .witch. with a .b.) that is hated by her office staff. Her assistant is played by Reynolds, and in the first scenes we see her weld her power when Reynolds.s character Andrew Paxton spills her coffee on himself and he gives her his coffee, which turns out to »

Lauren Graham returns to television as a mom. The "Gilmore Girls" alumna is officially joining "Parenthood" after previously was claimed to be in talks for a role left by Maura Tierney. In the new drama series, Graham will once again tackle the role as a single mother of a teenage daughter.
Tierney dropped out of the project earlier this year after finding out that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Delaying its production, NBC put "Mercy" in place of "Parenthood" this Fall to give Tierney time to recuperate from the treatment. However, in early September, NBC released a formal announcement that Tierney was out of the project for good. Shortly after, there were talks with Helen Hunt to fill the vacant position but they didn't come out with positive result.
"Parenthood", which is loosely based on a 1989 film of the same name, is also starring Peter Krause, Erika Christensen, »

The Proposal Quick Thoughts: The Proposal is a formulaic and familiar romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds as a publishing executive and her haggard assistant entering into a marriage of convenience so he can become a big-time literary editor and so she won't get deported back to Canada. The film co-stars Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and Betty White as Reynolds' Alaskan family who unwittingly become pawns in the pair's matrimonial ruse.
A massive summertime box office hit, I was pleasantly surprised by roughly 60-percent of director Anne Fletcher's (27 Dresses, Step Up) latest effort. Bullock and Reynolds have great chemistry, their early sparring as they hammer out the details of their illegal contract brought a smile to my face. Unfortunately, the usual romantic comedy cliches intrude and once Pete Chiarelli's script requires the main characters to fall in love things become far less interesting. Still, the movie is hardly a disaster, »

A new NBC show might have found its replacement for their recent casting vacancy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Helen Hunt is being considered for the lead in Parenthood.
Hunt would replace Maura Tierney, who recently left the series due to her lengthy breast cancer treatments. The show was originally scheduled for a fall debut, but NBC pushed the series to mid-season so Tierney could undergo treatment. Tierney recently left the series because the treatments were to take longer than expected.
The series, created by Jason Katims, also stars Peter Krause, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson.

When news broke months ago that Parenthood, the new NBC drama remaking the 1980's movie by Ron Howard, would be moving to midseason I was very sad. Then to find out it was because Maura Tierney (ER, Newsradio), one of the shows start has breast cancer and they needed to postpone production, I was terribly sad. Then last week, Maura could not report back to work in time, so she was forced to depart the steller cast that is Parenthood. The cast includes Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedalia, Peter Krause, and Dax Shepard.
Now the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that award winning actress Helen Hunt, who has gone back to feature films after doing seven years on NBC's Mad About You, is pondering the idea after producers asked her to join the cast. Helen is a terrific actreess that defiently brings another "name" actor to the show.

Former ER star Maura Tierney has had to withdraw from her new series, Parenthood, to continue her treatment for breast cancer. NBC announced the actresses’ departure Thursday, and said they would recast her role in the new TV series based on the 1989 film.
In July, production on the series has been postponed for eight weeks and the premiere pushed to mid-season to allow Maura to undergo what they were then calling “medical evaluation.” Later it was confirmed she had a tumor in her breast that would require surgery. A representative for Maura said her prognosis is positive:
Ms. Tierney and her doctors remain confident that the outcome of her treatments will be positive. She is deeply disappointed that she will not be able to rejoin such a highly respected, talented, fun and funny group of actors and wishes to thank Jason Katims and NBC for their patience and support. Tierney was cast as Sarah, »

DreamWorks Animation announced today Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, and Brad Pitt have joined Oobermind, an animated twist on the superhero genre. Ferrell replaces Robert Downey Jr. as the voice of Oobermind, a diabolical villain with a bit of a quandary. Maybe the official synopsis can clarify:
When super villain Oobermind (Will Ferrell) defeats his archrival Metro Man (Brad Pitt), the world should be his oyster. But instead, Oobermind falls into total despair. It turns out that life without a rival is life without a point for him. So, he creates a new superhero rival, Titan (Jonah Hill). Unfortunately, the new hero wants to be a super villain, too. Caught in the middle, star reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) asks the tough questions: Who can we turn to? Who has what it takes to stand up to this menace? Who will defend the innocent? Oobermind! That’s who.

As the newest creepy kid on the block, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) should jump on the chance to play Carol Anne in MGM's shot-by-shot remake of Poltergeist. None of the original cast will be returning because they're all dead... Well except Craig T. The Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynold romantic comedy as just become the #19 highest grossing romantic comedy of all, surpassing the success of the Sex And The City movie. It is also Sandra Bullock's highest grossing film to day, quite a feat considering that she starred in high-earners like Speed.
More after the jump.
Adjusting for inflation, Box Office Mojo lists "The Proposal" as the 19th highest grossing romantic comedy of all time in North America. ("Pretty Woman" is No. 1; "Sex and the City," is No. 20.)
Bullock has been breaking records both sides of the Atlantic proving she still has what it takes to open a movie. UK audiences flocked to the cinema for the opening of The Proposal in July making it her biggest UK opening ever (£3,233,422) and beating previous record holder 'Two Weeks Notice' (£2.6) by a stellar 25%.
