The Fantastic and the Apocalyptic

Richard Curtis sets out to the high seas to rock our world, Roland Emmerich just obliterates it and Wes Anderson reenvisions it in stop-motion animation, while as a group of documentaries ponder real world issues of war, God, poverty and Glenn Gould.

"2012"

On behalf of moviegoers everywhere, we here at IFC would like to thank that schoolyard bully who must have so traumatized a young Roland Emmerich that he has spent his recent career ritualistically laying waste to our world one famous landmark at a time. Having previous employed such excuses for mass destruction as alien invasions and global warming, this time cinema's most destructive director turns to an ancient Mayan prophecy that foretells the end of all mankind, and once again batters humanity -- specifically John Cusack and assorted stragglers -- like the »

Another New Pandorum Clip

11 September 2009 4:39 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Yesterday we brought you an excrutiatingly tense Pandorum clip showing Ben Foster's Cpl. Bower going toe to toe with a nasty space creature, and now like Christmas: Part 2, we have another clip to offer. Introducing the characters played by Antje Traue, sort of a hot German Ripley mixed with Milla Jovovich's Alice and Carrie Anne Moss' Trinity - and Cung Le, an Mma fighter who could kill you in ways we can only attempt fleetingly (Youtube him), the clip also gives another close up look at the big bad. Still no sign of Cam...

Green Day's Billie Joe Wants 'American Idiot' Movie To Be Like 'Rocky Horror Picture Show.' MTV News Plays Casting Director

27 July 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It’s been five years since Green Day’s multi-platinum, Grammy-winning album “American Idiot” came out, but work on the material is still very alive. A musical adaptation is set to debut at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in September and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong continues to push for developing the disc’s post-9/11 stories for the big screen. And he wants to do it in an unexpected way.

"I thought 'American Idiot' had a lot in common with something like 'Rocky Horror Picture Show,'" Billie Joe told The Associated Press. "It would great to see a film made out of it someday too."

Strange, perhaps. But “Idiot” has been subtly intertwined, at least in the minds of Green Day’s musical trio, for years. During the “Idiot” tour in 2004, concert-goers who arrived early to the venue were treated to the sounds of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" soundtrack »

Babes in Armor: Ten of our favorite action and fantasy movie heroines

20 May 2009 8:55 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

*Note: This post originally ran on May 22nd, 2008

We love our fantasy/sci-fi women ... ladies who can wield a sword or rocket launcher as well as any man, but do it so much more stylishly and, in some cases, in much less clothing! Here are ten women we definitely want on our side in the heat of battle.

Jane Fonda as "Barbarella"

in Barbarella

"Queen of the Galaxy" is a tough moniker to live up to, but if anyone can do it, Barbarella can. She has to deal with murderous children and their killer dolls, horny aliens, a blind (albeit hot) angel, and Anita Pallenberg as an eyepatch wearing assassin who Really wants to get to know her. Best of all, she shows us the proper way to strip in zero gravity, and you can see it Here, in one of the greatest (and mildly Nsfw) openings in film history. »

[DVD Review] The Matrix: The 10th Anniversary Edition

8 April 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If you've seen The Matrix you know why the film community heralds it as a benchmark achievement in filmmaking. Just as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars set the bar for film special effects, The Matrix came along and made us re-examine everything we thought a movie could do. Revolutionary, groundbreaking, mindblowing - these are all terms people use to describe The Matrix. It's certainly all true, but up until now, what I'd appreciated most about The Matrix was this: it packaged a Philosophy 101 course into a digestible Sci-Fi flick with a raging techno/rock/orchestral score and jaw-dropping action sequences. The Blu-ray release of The Matrix turns this scale on its head bringing the action scenes to the level they were always meant to reach - now the film is superb all the way around.

Blu-Ray Review: Everyone Needs to Own ‘The Matrix’ in HD

7 April 2009 6:36 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – Like a lot of movie fans, one of the first DVDs I owned in the early days of the technology was the revolutionary “The Matrix,” starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano from directors Andy and Larry Wachowski. Not only was this sci-fi action extravaganza an easily re-watchable film but it looked amazing with DVD quality. Of course, HD was developed for movies like “The Matrix,” now available as a stand-alone Blu-Ray release for the first time.

The tenth anniversary edition of “The Matrix” brings the already-influential tale of Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity home in crystal-clear 1080p High Definition with the film’s original 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The impressive audio track is a Dolby TrueHD English 5.1 track and the film also includes French and Italian 5.1 tracks and Spanish and Portuguese 2.0 tracks.

What is there to say about the plot of the quality of “The Matrix »

Sigourney Weaver voted top action star

1 April 2009 3:55 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Just yesterday we were a bit underwhelmed by the results of a new movie-themed survey that named Steve McQueen’s Bullitt the most iconic car chase flick. We’re not so jaded that it elicited yawns around Boxwish HQ, but we have to admit it didn’t really get our engines revving. Unlike the results of a survey today that has had us debating like feverish politicians. But let’s not hold you in suspense any longer. The poll, conducted by Sky Movies to promote their upcoming “action season” of films sought to find the most kick-ass of all cinematic action stars and coming out on top was none other than a woman. Take a bow Sigourney Weaver.

As Lt. Ellen Ripley in the long-running Alien franchise, Sigourney re-wrote the action star rule book winning a part that originally had been written as male. To win the poll, she beat »

Julia Roberts Produces For Christ -- So that’s why we haven’t seen a lot of her these past few years

9 March 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As I was checking out which movies are about to be released I was suddenly reminded that we will be getting a new Julia Roberts movie on March 20th. What with her hectic schedule of mom/environmentally-conscious mom, audiences haven’t seen much of Julia since her turn in “Charlie Wilson’s War” over a year ago. I was never a huge fan of Julia’s but I have to admit that after the weak female-centric pictures of 2009, I am looking forward to seeing the pro in action in “Duplicity”. Julia also has “Fireflies in the Garden” coming out in June. The independent feature also co-stars Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hayden Panettiere and was directed by Dennis Lee. Apparently Lee made a good impression on Julia as she has now agreed to produce a feature adaptation of the director’s award-winning student film ... »
