Matt Damon, from private campaigner to Hollywood's biggest star

9 November 2009 1:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports

Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.

Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

London Film Festival Closing Gala: Nowhere Boy

6 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Dir: Sam Taylor Wood Cast: Aaron Johnson, Kristen Scott Thomas, Anne Marie Duff, David Morrisey, David Threlfall, Thomas Brodie Sangster It must be said that British cinema did not promote itself especially well at this year’s London Film Festival. ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ and ‘Kicks’ failed to make any positive mark on the critics and audiences that turned out to see them; and while ’44 Inch Chest’ and ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’ boasted fantastic casts and gritty aesthetics, they were poorly written and suffered a similar fate. Fortunately, festival organiser Sandra Hebron had one more card up her sleeve for the closing gala… ‘Nowhere Boy’. The film explores the teen years of one of the nation’s most beloved yet mysterious musical figures… John Lennon. The project has been developed by Ecosse (perhaps the most British production company around after a host of period dramas and adaptations of »

[Movie Review] New York, I Love You

16 October 2009 4:08 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If you've seen Paris, je t'aime, you would know the basic concept of New York, I Love You. Some of the world's celebrated filmmakers create short tales of romance based in a metropolitan city, compiled in an anthology film. The stories stand on their own, but connected together by the common theme of love and the mood of its location.

What's different—and consequently better—about New York, I Love You is that the individual stories are interconnected, to illustrate a web of people that links New Yorkers in unexpected ways. It could be that two strangers hail the same cab, or go to the same Chinese laundromat, or know the same pharmacist. Furthering these links is Emilie Ohana, playing a video artist who circles the city with a video camera and continually runs into the other characters.

Unlike the segmented and showcasey Paris, je t'aime, this film is much more fluid. »

Rob Marshall's 'Nine' Yanked Out of November

8 October 2009 7:29 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Those who can't wait to see "Nine" in theaters apparently have to wait a little bit longer. Brad Brevet of Rope of Silicon has broken the news that this drama musical has got delayed to December. So, instead of being released on November 25, it is now set for a limited bow in New York and Los Angeles on December 18, before going wide across the U.S. on December 25.

The move was made by The Weinstein Company (TWC) after the studio's other movie, "The Road", finally settled on the November 25 date. TWC insisted that it was not a result of rumored production delays. The scheduled Christmas release now placed "Nine" in competition with "Sherlock Holmes" and "It's Complicated".

Adapted from the 1982 Tony-winning Broadway musical, "Nine" revolves around world famous film director Guido Contini. Dealing with a personal and professional crisis, he struggles to prepare his latest picture, while at the same »

'New York, I Love You' Unleashes New Clip

2 October 2009 11:38 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

A brand new clip of "New York, I Love You" has been put forth in anticipation to the film's October release. Released at MySpace, the snippet takes a one minute plus look at the segment directed by Shekhar Kapur. It features a scene between Julie Christie's Isabelle and Shia Labeouf's Jacob inside an elegant hotel.

The segment follows Isabelle, an opera singer who checks into an elegant hotel to kill herself, as Variety claimed. She's intrigued by a handicapped bellboy, Jacob, who magically becomes associated with John Hurt's character. The piece is one of the last pieces of writing from the late director Anthony Minghella. When Minghella passed away, Kapur took over the directing part.

From the producer of "Paris, je t'aime", "New York, I Love You" is a collaboration of storytelling from some of today's most imaginative filmmakers from the acclaimed Mira Nair to newcomer to the job Natalie Portman. »

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Rising Stars!

'Celebrating cinema's emerging talents' - That's our new slogan, and I think tMF has come a long way, but of course there is still room for improvement. I think we're lucky that our viewers care enough to tell us both our good and bad points. The October edition of the Top 50 Hitlist will reflect all these... In the meantime, tMF puts the spotlight on today's rising stars - these are the guys who really made a lot of buzz - grabbed plum roles despite intense competition and would be working with the industry's topnotch filmmakers, and more.

Find out who they are - you've certainly heard some of them and a few might be unfamiliar names, but take a closer look - you might be missing some names who are still 'under the radar' but would soon be rockin' the scene!

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57 of Pancreatic Cancer, Defies Odds in 1.5-Year Public Battle

Chicago – “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost,” film, TV and dance icon Patrick Swayze died on Sept. 14, 2009 at 57 after a 1.5-year public battle with pancreatic cancer. He was in his Los Angeles home beside friends and family.

The legendary actor made no secret of his condition, wrote a memoir with his wife since he was diagnosed in Jan. 2008 and braved through filming of the TV crime drama “The Beast” while refusing to ingest painkillers so as not to derail his performance. He was noticeably thinner on “The Beast” and shooting was difficult on Swayze physically, but he persisted with his craft nonetheless.

Coming Through Slaughter Going Ahead

8 September 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The last time a novel by Michael Ondaatje was adapted for the big screen, things went fairly well. That, of course, was The English Patient, Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-hoovering epic drama. And now producer Paul Maslansky is hoping that lightning will strike twice with his adaptation of Ondaatje’s novel about the birth of jazz, Coming Through Slaughter.Maslansky first optioned the property three years ago, but finally has a script that’s good to go, by Mark Bailey, which has been given the green light by Ondaatje. Maslansky’s production partner, Lars Bloch, is currently in Venice looking for distributors and potential directors. If it goes ahead, Coming Through Slaughter – which follows the life story of Buddy Bolden, a New Orleans-bazed cornettist credited with being a major player in the birth of what is widely hailed as the only American-created art form – will stick out like a sore thumb on Maslansky’s CV. »

Italian costume exhibition boasts Oscar-winning outfits

4 September 2009 6:36 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Although we rave about the effortless chic of modern films such as 500 Days of Summer it’s often the period dramas that have the most impressive costumes. Italian designer Umberto Tirelli began creating film clothing and accessories in 1964 and although he died in 1990, his atelier has continued his work to this day. When he began making film and theatre attire he started out with “two sewing machines, five seamstresses, a milliner, a secretary and a driver-storeman.” He’s come a long way since then as his work is currently being shown in an Italian exhibition named “The Oscars’ Atelier: Costumes from the Tirelli Workshop for the Big Screen”.

During the 1960s many Italian directors believed that period costumes needed to look more authentic and recruited Tirelli to create their wardrobes. Making the outfits rigid and uncomfortable might have been bad for the cast but the directors wanted to capture the reality of wearing these clothes, »
