UK album sales see 3.5% annual decline

4 hours ago | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

UK album sales fell by 3.5% to 128.9 million in 2009, the BPI has announced. The modest decrease was attributed to a "healthy stream of key releases", including albums from Susan Boyle, Lady GaGa, Michael Bublé and the Black Eyed Peas. Digital album sales accounted for 16.1m sales, 12.5% of the overall albums market. "Despite difficult trading conditions and the ever-present competition from illegal downloading, UK music sales remained relatively resilient during 2009," (more) »

Susan Boyle's Reign on Billboard Hot 200 Continues

11 hours ago | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Susan Boyle extends its reign on Billboard Hot 200 with her debut album "I Dreamed a Dream". According to Nielsen SoundScan, the effort has added another 137,000 copies, bringing a total of 3,104,000 units in its six weeks on sale.

The average number of "I Dreamed a Dream" hints that the Susan hysteria in the U.S. has started to die down. It means that whoever release new albums in the coming weeks may have the chance to end her six-week reign on the chart.

The U.S. albums chart has no newcomers this week. The runner-up position belongs to Lady GaGa's "The Fame" with 82,000. The third place is secured by Alicia Keys' "The Element of Freedom" with 80,000.

Mary J. Blige falls two spot from No. 2 to No. 4 with her "Stronger With Each Tear" album. Taylor Swift rounds the Top 5 with "Fearless" which becomes the best-selling album of 2009 for selling almost »

After announcing Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban as early winners in music category, the 36th Annual People's Choice Awards rolls out its full list of musicians who manage to walk away with trophies in their hands. Leading the pack is Lady GaGa.

The dance queen receives double victory. She wins over Adam Lambert, Demi Lovato, Kris Allen and Susan Boyle in Favorite Breakout Music Artist. She grabs her second award in Favorite Pop Artist after facing off Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Black Eyed Peas.

Losing the battle against Lady GaGa in Favorite Pop Artist and Carrie Underwood in Favorite Country Artist, Taylor Swift is voted Favorite Female Artist by music lovers. She blocks the likes of Beyonce Knowles, Britney and Pink to win the prize and denies Carrie from scooping her second award.

Six Collaborations Britney Spears Should Do In 2010

6 January 2010 10:33 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

As you've probably heard by now, there's a fairly good chance that, come March, we'll have a new Britney Spears single on our airwaves. Not much is known about the song, except that it's apparently produced by current "It" guy David Guetta (perhaps you've heard "I Gotta Feeling," the ultra-ubiquitous song he did for the Black Eyed Peas).

There's reportedly also an album due this summer, featuring work by Darkchild and 21-year-old producer/musician Jon Asher, who recently told the New York Post that it will be "Epic … music that has meaning. Something that truly moves you."

Sounds epic indeed. So while Spears' label, Jive Records, told MTV News that they "cannot confirm" anything, we here in the Newsroom figured that it's never too early to begin rampant speculation about Brit Brit's new project. Which is why we've complied a wish list of artists and producers we can only dream she'd collaborate with. »

Susan Boyle Is Billboard #1 For Sixth-Straight Week

Lady Gaga takes #2 spot in slow week of album sales for everyone.

It's becoming clear that you can't stop Susan Boyle, you can only hope to contain her. Actually, nobody has even been able to do that yet. The "Britain's Got Talent" star will hold on to the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart for an amazing sixth week in a row, thanks to another 137,000 units shifted, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. And while her sales over the New Year's week dipped by more than 70 percent, Boyle still managed to steam past the 3 million mark in just six weeks.

With no other new releases dropping in the last week of 2009, the rest of the top 10 consisted of the usual suspects, all of whom took serious double-digit hits as consumers appeared to snuggle up and avoid the post-Christmas sales. »

Well, the final numbers have been crunched and the end result is something we pretty much suspected all along: 2009 was a very big year for Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and the late, great King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

On Wednesday (January 6), Nielsen SoundScan released their sales figures for 2009, and while some of the data is downright depressing — total album sales (including digital) dropped more than 12 percent — we prefer to focus on the positive: Swift, Gaga and Jackson (not to mention Susan Boyle, the Black Eyed Peas and the Kings of Leon) moved a whole lot of units over the past 12 months.

Swift's Fearless was the year's top-selling album, moving more than 3.2 million copies, holding off a late-year charge from Boyle, whose I Dreamed a Dream sold some »

Nine

First a confession. I dislike musicals. No, that’s untrue. I loathe musicals. I loathe them in much the same way that I loathe Ryanair baggage charges. Or root canal surgery. Or the post-pub, Cro-magnon wank-a-thon, Danny Dyer's Hardest Men. I just cannot see the appeal. All that breathy over enunciation. The razzle. Yeah! The dazzle. Yeah! Yeah! The big, lungy singing and the high kicking and the weary and ultimately rather tragic "raciness". The ridiculous sub ‘Ello ‘Ello accents, the painful exposition and the “amusing” asides. The in-jokes and all the self-congratulatory back-slapping and gurning. All that stage school, theatrical bonhomie. I may be missing the point entirely but it all just baffles me. Musicals, to me, feel like the rather embarrassing, screeching aunt-at-a-wedding. Over cooked, slightly desperate and just to painful to watch. So going to see Nine, the new film from the director of Chicago, Rob Marshall, »
