Sad news out of Hollywood today, as actress Brittany Murphy — the star of modern classics like "Clueless" and "8 Mile" — passed away at the age of 32. The details remain incomplete, but there is a report that she was admitted to Los Angeles' Cedars Sinai Hospital in full cardiac arrest. Celebrity friends — including co-stars Ashton Kutcher ("Just Married") and Alicia Silverstone ("Clueless") — are already weighing in with reactions to the tragic news.
Murphy got her first big break in 1995's "Clueless," the Amy Heckerling-directed California adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma." The film was a huge hit, as was the soundtrack that featured Radiohead, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Supergrass, Counting Crows and Smoking Popes. In one of the movie's definitive scenes, she raps along to Coolio's "Rollin' With My Homies" and does a little arm dance that ended up becoming associated with both the song and with Murphy.
That wasn't Murphy's only run-in with hip-hop. »

What if Hermione Granger left her familiar homeland of England to come teach at severely neglected school of witchcraft and wizardry in inner city America? Can you even imagine a Hogwarts with no spell books and, gasp, only one hippogriff? Or how about a member of Dumbledore's Army getting in way over her head? It would surely be a magical story of a teacher who becomes the student, culminating, no doubt, in some kind of Quidditch tournament to save the rec center.
I love me a good spoof trailer for a fake movie, and the new funny making its way around the Intertubes is CollegeHumor's trailer for Dangerous Wands. It's a brilliant and moving embrace of the world of Harry Potter that picks apart how formulaic Teacher Breaks Through to Neglected Students films are. And, this being a delightful riff on Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds, it even features a »

Reality shows have become the new career-recovery vehicle, especially in an age when former music channels prefer "real" drama to that relic once known as the music video. If you're an artist and can't get your clips into those Top 10 shows (which usually don't even have the patience to play the full three minutes or so), your best shot is to sell out a piece of your personal life for a celebreality series. So now with Still Standing on Bet, which premiered Tuesday night, Monica is treading the same path the pre="the ">Osbournes and the late, lamented Lachey-Simpson marriage »

The relationship between pop music and popular film has been a fruitful one. When popular tracks started to accompany the soundtrack of mainstream films regularly in the mid-late 1960s, the music was often used in the context of the film to reflect the aural preferences particular to a specific counterculture. Movies like The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider and A Hard Day’s Night integrated top 40 hits or artists into their film not only to help sell the film to a broad or specific audience (which proved especially effective when marketing to young people), but to tie that film’s narrative and themes to the counterculture that such music allegedly speaks for. Songs featured in The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy were written specifically for their films, but by artists already associated with these social and aural movements (Simon and Garfunkel and Harry Nilsson, respectively). The existence of Top 40 radio made it rather easy to identify which songs »
