Chicago – From producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men,” “Superman Returns”), “Trick ‘r Treat” is a fantastic horror anthology film that has inexplicably been rolling around the Warner Bros. offices for years, having initially been scheduled for release back in 2007. Finally getting a Halloween-tied Blu-Ray release, this is one of the best straight-to-dvd horror flicks in years, a consistently clever and enjoyable genre entry that will have horror fans screaming in glee this holiday season.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
I will never understand why junk like “The Stepfather” and “Saw VI” get national, heavily-marketed releases but something like “Trick ‘r Treat,” which has won festival awards and been buzzed about since it first started screening, won’t be playing on a screen near you this Halloween. This is one messed-up genre. I think if WB had found a way to market this film, especially with the star power of Anna Paquin coming off “True Blood, »

The story behind Trick ‘r Treat is almost as interesting as the film itself. Finished in 2007, the film got caught up in some politicking and marketing concerns. Not a very expensive movie - after being sneaked in La, and shown at Butt-Numb-a-Thon - it’s just now coming out on DVD and Blu-ray. Somewhat unfairly. My review after the jump.
The internet has done a good job of hyping the film if you’re in those circles, and the film is modest but entertaining. It intercuts a number of different Halloween tales, like if somehow Creepshow had interconnecting narratives. It starts with a family (headed by Leslie Bibb) taking down their Halloween decorations, only for it all to end in violence. There’s a group of girls (featuring Anna Paquin) making their way to a Halloween party in the woods, a group of young teens who go to where a »

Overture Films' new psychological, thriller, movie "Law Abiding Citizen" brought a lot of mystery and suspense,as it debuted nationwide, this weekend. It starred : Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Bruce McGill, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb, Michael Irby, Regina Hall, and Viola Davis. I thought the movie was excellent, and that Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, both did an excellent job in this movie. "Law Abiding Citizen" focused around the two main characters, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) and Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler). Clyde's family gets slaughtered by a guy named Clarence Darby and his accomplice. Clarence strikes a deal to walk free,by ratting out his accomplice. Then the movie fast forwards ten years into the future. Clyde gruesomely takes out Clarence, and gets thrown in prison for it,but then something mysterious happens. Clyde is able to somehow commit more murders without leaving his prison cell,or so it would seem. »

The players: Director: F. Gary Gray, Writer: Kurt Wimmer, Cast: Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Colm Meaney, Bruce McGill, Leslie Bibb
Facts of interest: None.
The plot: After one of the men who killed his family gets a light prison sentence, a desperate widower heads out to fix the justice system.
Our thoughts: F. Gary Gray’s new thriller “Law Abiding Citizen” is a totally crazy film, but it’s not necessarily a disastrous experience. It’s pretty much as over-the-top as a big-screen experience in this genre can get, and while it’s certainly entertaining, it fails to deliver the kind of intense payoff I expected. »

Where The Wild Things Are Studio: Warner Bros. Rated: PG for mild thematic elements, some adventure action and brief language. Starring: Catherine Keener, Max Records, Mark Ruffalo, Lauren Ambrose and James Gandolfini Directed by: Spike Jonze What it’s about: This adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic picture book tells the story of young Max (Max Records), who is constantly getting in trouble at home. One night after being punished, he runs away to a magical land where he meets a tribe of Wild Things and becomes their king. What I liked: I loved this book as a child, and I was thrilled to see that this has been given a faithful and inspired adaptation. Bringing a picture book to life on screen is different from adapting a novel because instead of trimming things down, the screenwriter must embellish on the original story. Spike Jonze does a brilliant job hitting all the major points of the book »

Quickcard Review
Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Cast: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb
Running Time: 1 hr. 48 mins.
Rating: R
Release Date: October 16, 2009
Plot: A man (Butler) decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain by the district attorney (Foxx) sets his family’s killers free.
Who’S It For? Either people are lazy or movies are really hard to make. There are moments of ugly violence in this film, and supposedly funny violence (when the phone rings, you’ll know what I mean). Simply rent Silence of the Lambs and Falling Down, then mash them together and maybe you’ll have what this movie was trying to achieve. Maybe.
Overall

Chicago – Justice is the theme of “Law Abiding Citizen,” a new film starring Jamie Foxx as a district attorney in Philadelphia who is targeted for revenge by a former client (Gerald Butler). Directing the film is veteran F. Gary Gray (”Friday,” “The Italian Job”).
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Taking a page from Hannibal Lechter, Gerald Butler portrays Clyde, an self-proclaimed “law abiding citizen” who feels that the crime committed against his family was not satisfactorily punished. Using his superior technical intelligence, Clyde stays one step ahead of ambitious attorney Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), as he conducts his style of revenge.

About a dozen years ago, the British evolutionist Richard Dawkins wrote a book called Climbing Mount Improbable. It has nothing to do with movies, but if Mount Improbable were real, I have no doubt that the new film Law Abiding Citizen would have its flag planted firmly at the summit.
I don't remember the last film I saw that took itself so seriously and presented itself so gravely and at the same time is so monumentally unlikely. Somehow, though, you could make the case that Law Abiding Citizen works, perhaps in spite of itself.
Movies like Pacific Heights and Arlington Road are a lot like this one, films dependent on a ridiculous chain of circumstances for absolutely anything to move forward. Roger Ebert's dissection of Arlington Road is a favorite of »

Review by Lis Fies
Warner Brothers apparently had no idea what a rare and wonderful cash cow it had acquired in Trick r' Treat, and made the totally bone-headed decision of releasing this stellar movie straight to DVD instead of giving it what would have been a smashingly lucrative theatrical release supplanting tired warhorse Saw this Halloween season. Not that Hollywood is known for understanding or respecting thriller/horror material and its fans, but their throwaway treatment of Trick 'r Treat is shockingly dumb even for them...
To add insult to injury, they've printed a woefully inadequate amount of DVDs to supply the awesome word of mouth, to the point that it's difficult to find a copy to buy or rent anywhere except in Blu-ray. »

The action thriller opens on Friday (October 16th) and is directed by Frank Darabont who adapts alongside Kurt Wimmer (“Equilibrium”). Butler produces with Alan Siegel, Lucas Foster and Mark Gill. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice... »

Let him out, or he’s gonna kill everyone. That sounds simple enough, right? Check out two more clips from “Law Abiding Citizen”, opening later this Friday. The film stars Jamie Foxx as a slick D.A. who goes up against Gerard Butler as a slick, vindictive sociopath who would like to teach all of us a lesson. In death! Muahahahaha! Ahem. Anyways, the first clip, which showed up on YouTube, is two and a half minutes long and features a lively debate between our two stars, while the second one comes courtesy of Overture Films. Starring Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Bruce McGill, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb, Michael Irby, Regina Hall, and Viola Davis, and directed by F. Gary Gray. »

It takes a lot to be a horror fan. We suffer indignities that other film fans wouldn’t dream of. Genre films are seldom screened for press, leading to frantic scrambling to get a seat at a midnight showing so that we can have that review up and ready for you, dear readers, on opening day. Regular critics scoff at our genre, and often can’t be bothered with it at all. So it rests upon those of us who are true lovers of the genre to keep you abreast of the happenings in horror-land.
Adding to my general frustration with the powers that be is the mishandling of three recent films in particular. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Trick ‘r Treat, and Paranormal Activity have all gotten a rotten distribution deal in one way or another. I asked Scott Weinberg, Managing Editor of Cinematical and Editor of Horror »

Here’s the new UK poster for Gerard Butler’s new movie, Law Abiding Citizen. The trailer for the movie came out recently and it looks like a great, gritty movie with a dark storyline. Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney, Bruce McGill, and Leslie Bibb are also in the movie directed by F. Gary Gray. It’s out on the 27th November so not too long to wait now.
Synopsis: Law Abiding Citizen is a thriller about a brilliant sociopath who orchestrates a series of high-profile murders that grip the city of Philadelphia – all from inside his jail cell – and the prosecutor assigned to his case who realizes he is the only one who can end the reign of terror.

Michael Dougherty, the writer/director of the long-delayed Trick ‘r Treat, has been doing press interviews to promote the release of the cult horror film. After three years of toiling through development at Warner Bros, the movie finally hit DVD shelves on Tuesday, and it’s definitely worth a look.
The R-rated movie is an anthology of four twisted and interwoven Halloween stories. I won’t give anything away, but they’re the kind of tales you’d tell during an eerie night around a campfire or while holding a flashlight under your chin. Dougherty shows them with such precision and clever direction that on film it’s just creepy and fun.
If you’ve had the chance to see it already, you’re probably wondering why WB dumped it to DVD without giving it at a chance in theaters. I wish I could tell you. It’s cast includes “True Blood” star Anna Paquin, »

Trick 'r Treat (2009) Synopsis: The residents of the small town of Warren Valley, Ohio, take Halloween seriously... possibly too seriously. The film tells several stories that take place in the town on Halloween, tying them together with violence and murder. “The Principal” takes a look at a murderous principal and his demented family. “Surprise Party” shows the bizarre fate of a group of hot school girls who go to a party deep in the woods. “The Halloween School Bus Massacre Revisited” follows a group of kids trying to scare the pants off one of their classmates with a decades-old story of murder. And finally, “Meet Sam” shows the fate of a bitter old man when the wrong trick-or-treater comes to his house. Killer Scene: There are plenty of killer scenes in this film, if you’ll pardon the pun. However, my personal favorite has to be the climax of “Surprise Party,” featuring »

More of a treat than a trick, this horror anthology film follows several stories on Halloween night. It is Halloween night and many have plans of a spooky kind. Emma (Leslie Bibb) ignores an ancient tradition of Halloween and pays dearly. Principal Steven Wilkins (Dylan Baker) has to have a talk with one of his troubled students (Brent Kelly) before beginning his questionable Halloween activities. Laurie (Anna Paquin) is a shy girl and needs to find a date if she is to attend a party with her friends Danielle (Lauren Lee Smith), Janet (Moneca Delain), and Maria (Rochelle Aytes), but she has to walk through the dark woods to get to the party.
