Sued by
Orson Welles's daughter
Beatrice Welles in 1993 to prevent him from auctioning Welles' Oscar for
Citizen Kane (1941)--believed to have been lost--which Graver claimed Welles gave to him as a gift. She won the lawsuit and regained ownership, but after an unsuccessful lawsuit by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to block its sale, she put the Oscar up for auction in 2003. She had been given a replacement Oscar in 1988 when the original was thought to be lost, but had signed an agreement never to sell the replacement without first offering it to the Academy.
