Exclusive: The hammer just went down over the weekend on the one and only Oscar win for Citizen Kane, a 1941 movie many still consider the crown jewel of Hollywood, the greatest ever made.
In a Heritage Auctioneers “Hollywood Entertainment” auction that among many other items featured several from the career of Kane’s star, director and co-writer Orson Welles, the prize get was his 1941 Oscar for Original Screenplay that he shared with Herman Mankiewicz. Of the film’s nine nominations including Picture, Director and Actor for Welles, it was the single victory for the movie (How Green Was My Valley won Best Picture). The Welles statuette had a starting bid of $250,000 and sold to an unknown bidder for $645,000 (inclusive of buyer’s premium).
It, uh, gets a little complicated from there.

This is not the original Oscar statuette that Welles — who didn’t even attend the actual ceremony — won.

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in June, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Japanese slasher, a dark tale about family, a Scandinavian haunting, a terrifying coming-out story, and an aquatic creature-feature.
The Attic (1980)
Directed by George Edwards and Gary Graver.
Fathers are usually depicted as unkind and cruel in horror, and the one in The Attic is no exception. Carrie Snodgress plays the dutiful Louise who has sacrificed her own happiness for far too long. When she tries to turn her life around and do something about her loneliness, which entails adopting a chimpanzee, her tyrannical father (Ray Milland) is quick to stomp out her ambitions.

There’s been a whole slew of television shows and documentary films about nostalgia lately, with many focusing on a number of toy lines from the 80s and other decades of the past. The Toys That Made Us is likely the most well-known of the lot, landing on Netflix, talking about toys from Star Wars to Lego to Transformers all the way to He-man. I am a nostalgia-head, a toy collector and a fan of the 80s, so when a chance to see this documentary, Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, came up, I jumped at it. A film talking about the history of the famous line of He-man toys from Mattel? I’m in. I grew up playing with wrestling figures, smashing Robotech toys together in a battle for supremacy, busting poltergeists with my Ghostbusters and kicking butt with my Hero Turtles.

No movie fundamentally changed the horror genre as much as the original Halloween. The Shape’s iconic debut inspired — and continues to inspire — countless other slashers. And while most of these movies are only vaguely similar to Halloween, such as Friday the 13th, others were more blatant in their design and execution.
The flicks in question aren’t always set on Halloween, the victim doesn’t have to be a babysitter, and the antagonist may or may not even be masked. However, despite the superficial differences, these ten examples are unmistakably influenced by Michael Myers’ first killing spree.
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain (1981)
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain (or simply Nightmare) has a well-earned reputation for being sleazy and gruesome. Romano Scavolini‘s previous work in pornography comes out often in this erotic slasher, but if there’s anything to take away from this exercise in lust and grisliness, the...

“That’s all he ever wanted out of life… was love. That’s the tragedy of Charles Foster Kane. You see, he just didn’t have any to give.”
Orson Welles’ classic Citizen Kane (1941) will be available on 4k and Blu-ray October 19th. A 4-disc 4K Uhd+Blu-ray Combo and a 3-blu-ray Edition will both be available.
In the most dazzling debut feature in cinema history, twenty-five-year-old writer-producer-director-star Orson Welles synthesized the possibilities of sound-era filmmaking into what could be called the first truly modern movie. In telling the story of the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of a William Randolph Hearst–like newspaper magnate named Charles Foster Kane, Welles not only created the definitive portrait of American megalomania, he also unleashed a torrent of stylistic innovations—from the jigsaw-puzzle narrative structure to the stunning deep-focus camera work of Gregg Toland—that have ensured that Citizen Kane remains fresh and...

Sometime during the rickety, rollicking production of Orson Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind in 1974, the 1942 Oscar statuette for Best Original Screenplay (which Welles had won for Citizen Kane) disappeared. Only three decades later did cinematographer Gary Graver reveal that he’d placed the Oscar, blasphemously used as a prop for The Other Side of the Wind, in his storage. “Here, keep this,” Welles had told him. And so he did. The filmmaker’s daughter, Beatrice Welles, then sued Graver, and sold the statue herself. Because her father had “loathed everything that [the Citizen Kane] Oscar represented,” she argued, “To sell the one thing that had no value to him, but was of great value to others, perhaps was not so bad after all.”This award, however, held immense value for the other winner, the screenwriter and producer Herman J. Mankiewicz (nicknamed “Mank”), who threatened Orson Welles—with rumors and...

At the time, in November 1970, it must have seemed like an ideal match, a meeting of renegade titans: Orson Welles, the long-ago boy genius of theater and films who never got a job directing in Hollywood after 1958, and Dennis Hopper, whose out-of-nowhere smash with Easy Rider in 1969 made him the boy wonder of the hippie age and ostensible leader of a new wave of counterculture movies.
Just as Welles had cratered from a Hollywood-career perspective, Hopper hit the rocks with his second film — the hopelessly pretentious, financially ruinous The Last Movie, which the younger man was editing when he sat down with Welles one night to film five hours of chatty material that ended up as mere snippets in Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind, which was only finished and released in 2018 courtesy of Netflix.

Producer Filip Jan Rymsza, editor Bob Murawski, along with Peter Bogdonavich and Frank Marshall, surprised the film world in 2018 when they finished Orson Welles’ final project The Other Side of the Wind. Two documentaries about making the film accompanied Wind’s release and a moment in film history was made. We spoke with the team during the New York Film Festival that year and thought their journey was over. So it was a surprise to learn Rymsza and Murawski had a fourth project from the material, debuting at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Gary Graver, Welles’ cinematographer for Wind, shot nearly five hours of footage on two cameras when Orson Welles met Dennis Hopper for dinner in November 1970. Only thirty seconds of the footage appears in The Other Side of the Wind, but the conversation shows Welles curious about this alleged leader of the New Hollywood, a maverick like Welles,...

It doesn’t take long to explain a film like Hopper/Welles in relative detail. In 1970, Dennis Hopper took a break from editing The Last Movie and flew to Los Angeles to be interviewed by Orson Welles. Welles was working on what would later––much, much later––become The Other Side of the Wind. During a boozy candlelit dinner party, surrounded by a small group of friends, Welles’ cameras rolled on Hopper for a little over two hours as they discussed politics and filmmaking. This is exactly what we see.
The timing of the interview could hardly be more enticing. By 1970 Welles (who was only turning 55) had already begun to slip into the notorious talk show appearances and novelty roles that would define the late part of his career. Hot on the epoch-shifting success of Easy Rider, Hopper was at the peak of his career, but he was also just...

Orson Welles doesn’t waste time searching for the truth. Moments into “Hopper/Welles,” he declares, “Fuck the audience!” Meanwhile, a bemused Dennis Hopper allows for a dutiful grin. Such are the joys of this glorified behind-the-scenes feature, cobbled together from footage produced for Welles’ long-delayed swan song, “The Other Side of the Wind.” Assembled by producer Filip Jan Rymsza and editor Bob Murawski one year after they conjured “Wind” from Welles’ archives, this two-hour conversation from 1970 . It’s a long, drunken party conversation that allows you a seat at the table.
With Welles sitting just off-screen, cameraman Gary Graver sticks with Hopper’s bearded face for the duration, and the pair just go at it. The gorgeous black-and-white conversation was one of the many fragments produced for the “Wind” production, much of which takes place over the course of a long party hosted by the Wellesian protagonist and fictional...

For almost 40 years, the 100 hours of surviving footage that Orson Welles shot in the early 1970s for the movie “The Other Side of the Wind” remained largely unseen. First the director struggled in vain to finish the film, then its rights were tied up after his death. But that four decades of frustration has turned into a flurry of activity: In the last two years, that footage has been used not only in the completed version of “The Other Side of the Wind” that finally premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, but in two different documentaries about the film, Morgan Neville’s “They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead” and Ryan Suffern’s short doc “A Final Cut for Orson.”
And now it’s serving as the basis for yet another side of “The Other Side of the Wind,” and another posthumous film on which Welles is credited as director.

The titles grab you by the collar like a desperate carny barker – Psycho A Go-Go, Blood of Ghastly Horror, Satan’s Sadists – then something for the raincoat crowd – Girls For Rent, Nurses For Sale, The Naughty Stewardesses. The rant turns political, incendiary: Black Heat, Mean Mother, Black Samurai. His last gasp – Cinderella 2000, Nurse Sherri, The Happy Hobo. The Happy Hobo?
Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection is an alarming new release from Severin Films presenting 32 of the director’s misbegotten “masterpieces” in beautifully restored transfers with enough added attractions to choke a horse. For the casual genre fan, the name Al Adamson may not ring a bell. As for me, I have always known about the prolific B filmmaker, but have only seen one of his films (that would be Nurse Sherri) - thus far. Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson (2019), a fantastic new documentary directed by Severin Film’s David Gregory and released on Blu-ray from Severin Films, is going to open up a lot of eyes to not only his vast filmography, but to his inspiring life and tragic death.
Now it should be noted that Adamson’s films were never held in high regard while he was alive; the common perception was they were cheap, ludicrous, and incompetent. What the documentary attempts to do - and succeeds - is show the kind man behind the work, therefore softening any discord towards his films, all...

Exploitation films have their mavericks, their patron saints and their bad boys: this well-researched and lovingly assembled shock-bio introduces us to a particularly talented persistent filmmaker whose sexed-up horror & action grindhouse non-epics proved commercially viable even into the video age. Then comes the Ghastly Death part, a cruelly undeserved finish for a movie guy liked and admired by his collaborators.

Looks like it’s one and done for Cara Delevingne and the DC Extended Universe…and we can’t say we’re surprised.
The Valerian actress played the part of June Moon (Aka The Enchantress) in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and quickly became the common enemy of Task Force X. A bloated script and clichéd dialogue arguably reduced Delevingne’s supernatural menace to a bland, wholly forgettable villain though, and that’s certainly disappointing, particularly when you consider her performances across Paper Towns and Face of an Angel.
But those holding out hope that Cara Delevingne will get another crack at the Dceu through Suicide Squad 2 needn’t bother; while doing the press rounds for Luc Besson’s Valerian, the model/actress told USA Today that she’s “pretty sure” her time playing June Moon/Enchantress has come to an end.

When Netflix announced March 14 it would be financing and distributing a finished cut of Orson Welles’ “The Other Side of the Wind,” the company opened a new chapter in one of the wildest, most frustrating sagas of film lore.
The legendary director shot his final film between 1970 and 1976, but a series of financial setbacks kept him from realizing his vision before his death in 1985. In the 32 years since, surviving members of the production had attempted to complete the project, but for legal reasons were unable to procure the more than 1,000 reels of negatives from a vault in Paris until the streaming giant stepped in this week.
The negatives are now safely in Los Angeles, in the hands of the team that will edit the film, according to a March 14 note from producer Filip Jan Rymsza. A short video released the next day on Yahoo details the process of shipping the reels.

A letter found inside a book at the Lilly Library at Indiana University has revealed that, while living in Europe in the early 1950s, Orson Welles was contemplating working on several films and stage projects.
The signed, two-page letter, which was typed on Welles’ stationery, was found by Liana Meeker, a catalog specialist at Lilly Library. It was folded inside a copy of Whit Materson’s “Badge of Evil,” which was the basis for Welles’ 1958 film “Touch of Evil.”
It is unknown how the letter ended up in the book, said Craig S. Simpson, Manuscripts Archivist at Lilly Library.”It was just a random item found in a random book,” he explained.

Warner Bros. and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was certainly a divisive movie, and was pretty much lambasted by the majority of critics – though it does have its fair share of very focal fans. However, one thing even most of the film’s defenders have to admit is that the main villain, Enchantress, was bloody awful.
Cara Delevingne never got a chance to do much of anything at all as June Moon or her spookier alter-ego, but the biggest misstep was having the character gyrate like some kind of disco take on Gozer the Gozerian from Ghostbusters for her grand finale.

Hello all. As I’m sure nearly everyone else here on ComicMix has given their two cents on the recent release of Suicide Squad (with the most important among us, John Ostrander, being the end-all-be-all in his review), I’d be remiss if I didn’t also drop a few opinionated pennies in the bucket.
My opinion of the flick, sadly, isn’t a high one. Had John – someone I admire so much as a writer, and cherish as a (dare I say it) personal friend – not been one of the sources by which David Ayer and his team built the Squad around? I’d really be inclined to say I left the theater unsurprisingly disgruntled. But I left at least with a snicker and some joy for the good things buried in the layers of bad.
Walking in, admittedly, my expectations were low. Given the bar to clear thanks to Batman v.

This past weekend, Suicide Squad, DC’s latest superhero offering, scored over $133 million at the box office. It set a brand-new August record despite overwhelming (and controversial) critical disapproval. As such, this movie deserves to be examined on an analytical level, especially with regard to representation.
No more contentious figure exists, perhaps, in this movie, than that of Harley Quinn. As the most high-profile female character in the film, popular with fans the world over, everyone has a horse in the Harley race. Criticism has appeared over her costume design, her status as an abuse survivor, and pretty much everything else about her.
She’s either a feminist icon or the worst thing to happen to women in DC movies, ever.

David Ayer’s Will Smith and Margot Robbie-starring DC Comics antiheroes movie Suicide Squad is out now. Once you’ve seen it, you might well have some questions.
Scroll past our spoiler squirrel, Daphne, once you’re ready to explore the quandaries left dangling by the film in spoiler-stuffed detail...
Who was The Red Streak?
Let’s start with an easy one. Right at the start, a dude in metallic red suit speeds into the establishing cutaway scene about Jai Courtney’s Boomerang, stands around for a second and then dishes out a one-liner regarding honour among thieves. Later on, a now-incarcerated Boomerang calls him ‘The Red Streak’.
This chap, of course, is Ezra Miller’s take on The Flash, making a rather-well-kept-under-wraps cameo appearance.

Suicide Squad is not the darkest mainstream superhero comic book movie ever made, nor is it even the darkest live-action film featuring Batman ever made. However, it is gleefully nihilistic, and it takes a different approach to what has become a fairly familiar story form at this point, right at the moment when it feels like superhero movies either have to evolve or die. It is very much a David Ayer film, but he’s playing with some of the biggest icons of the DC universe in a way that no one else has so far in a feature film. It suggests just how much room there is for filmmakers to think outside the box as they bring these characters to life, in part because of the ways it succeeds and because of the ways it fails. The film is set directly after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,...

Set visits are like a blind date. You know a little about them before you show up, but you’re never really sure what you’re going to get until it’s too late to back out. Which is how I found myself in Toronto in June of 2015 asking director David Ayer just what he was thinking when designing costumes for the women of Suicide Squad. After all, the men are in armor and or at least fully-clothed (even Killer Croc!), but all of the women are baring skin. I asked Ayer what the deal was because it was a little disheartening. “I just wanted to see Waller in a bikini. I mean really that drove everything for me. [Laughs.] For me it's, if you look at the aesthetic of comic books and you look at how the imagery of it and sort of what it means and what it does...

This article contains spoilers for Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman.
Suicide Squad is set to reach British cinemas on Friday 5th August 2016. That’s less than a month away, and yet there’s still a lot about the movie that we don’t know. That’s quite refreshing, in this age of trailers spoiling major plot twists and cameos, as big blockbuster advertising campaigns will generally reveal anything to stand out nowadays.
Here are the things we do know: David Ayer of Fury wrote and directed Suicide Squad. It will be rated PG-13/12A. It features a band of villains being recruited by the Us government to undertake dangerous black ops missions. Batman and The Joker are both in it, as the trailers have shown us.

Despite having a cast that is as close to gender parity as we’ve ever seen in a superhero film, Suicide Squad has struggled with their representation of women. Other than Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), the women of the Squad have been sexualized for the male gaze. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) suffer the most, but even Katana (Karen Fukuhara) is baring her midriff for reasons unknown. I’ve gone Ham on Warner Bros. in past articles about their treatment of the Squad ladies — particularly Enchantress — but this latest piece of promotional material hammers home the differences in how men and women are portrayed in this world. Courtesy of @DC_Extended, the standee display features the entire cast sans Joker (Jared Leto). Image Credit: @DC_Extended The bare arms of Diablo (Jay Hernandez) are the most skin you see on a male Squad member, while the women are probably a bit chilly.

Not so very long ago I had a co-worker who described himself as a movie geek, film fan, cinema addict, what have you. He talked about film as if he knew all about it. I asked him one day what he thought of Orson Welles. His reply?
“I don’t think about Orson Welles, he was old and fat, now he’s dead, what am I supposed to think about him?”
Needless to say I never really talked to this person again, who shall remain nameless. Of course the fact that he was an egocentric, arrogant, narcissistic weasel didn’t help matters. (He claimed to have a small part in Tombstone, I have seen that movie several times, never spotted him, by the way…)
I simply cannot fathom the arrogance of someone dismissing, so casually one of the greatest film makers who ever lived. I have been fascinated, obsessed even,...

Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

"At the start of the movie she discovers a cavern and finds 'something' within... an ancient sorceress. A feral being. She's been trapped for so long and now she's finally let out."
"I'd gather the accent, which is deeper and posher than June's...just evil stuff..."
