Hosted by comedian Tom Papa, the 60th Cas Awards for sound mixing were held March 2 at the Beverly Hilton, where Oscar-shortlisted sound contenders “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” competed. The Season 4 finale of “Stranger Things,” which streamed July 1, 2022 on Netflix, was recently nominated for six Emmy Awards: music supervision, non-prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and stunt performance (x2). However, due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the upcoming Emmys, which were supposed to take place in September 2023, have been pushed back to January 2024. That means the heralded episode in question, titled “The Piggyback,” will have to wait an astounding 555 days between airing and trophy-bestowing.
To clarify: the Creative Arts Emmys (mostly for below-the-line and technical achievements) will now take place January 6 and 7 of 2024, and the main Primetime Emmys are scheduled for one week later on Monday, January 15.

Typically at the Emmy Awards, a TV show is judged on a full season as it aired entirely within a single eligibility period. However, in extremely rare cases, a drama or comedy will have what’s known as “orphaned” episodes that air outside of the cut-off date. That’s exactly why Season 4 of The Duffer Brothers‘ sci-fi megahit “Stranger Things” is eligible in two consecutive Emmy cycles, last year and this year. Gold Derby has exclusively learned which 13 categories Netflix is submitting for consideration at the 2023 Emmys (see below).

Motion Picture Sound Editors spread the wealth at the 70th Golden Reel Awards, its first in-person ceremony since the start of the pandemic, held in a new venue, L.A.’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors on Monday unveiled nomination for the 70th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. Winners will be announced February 26 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.
The organization of professional sound and music editors honors the year’s outstanding feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment, and student productions.

The ambitious fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things involved developing the look and sound of its threatening, vine-laden antagonist Vecna. Creator-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer drew early inspiration for the character from Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise, says Michael Maher Jr., one of three VFX supervisors from the Emmy-nominated effects team. In all, their work involved a staggering 4,400 VFX shots created by nearly 30 effects vendors including Dneg, Digital Domain, Rodeo FX, Lola and Important Looking Pirates, plus Scanline, which Netflix acquired in November.

The eagle-eared viewer may realize they’ve heard the sound of a clock before when it comes to Stranger Things villains. The eerie sound that has come to be associated with season four’s Upside Down villain, Vecna — who is revealed to be “One” (Jamie Campbell Bower) in the Volume 1 finale — first chimed in season two’s “Chapter Four: Will the Wise” with Hopper (David Harbour) discovering a tunnel to the Upside Down, and again in the season three episode, “Chapter Two: The Mall Rats,” when Billy (Dacre Montgomery) was being possessed by the Mind Flayer.

As was widely anticipated, Alfonso Cuaron’s triple Oscar-winning “Roma” dominated the 6th Premios Platino nominations, unveiled Thursday at Hollywood’s legendary Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the very first Oscars. It snagged a total of nine nominations, including best film, director, art direction, cinematography, and acting for its two Oscar-nominated actresses, Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira.

With 10 Academy Award bids, “Roma” is tied with “The Favourite” as the most nominated film, and after recent victories at the BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and Directors Guild Awards it’s currently the Best Picture front-runner. Oscar-nominated production sound mixer Jose Antonio Garcia never actually saw a script for “Roma” during shooting. “I think the production designer was the only one who got a script,” he recalls. Everyone else got “a piece of paper with broad strokes of the dialogue, whatever might be said or not.” Therefore, every actor “would be wired” with microphones, and Garcia would “brace for impact.” Suffice it to say that this complicated Garcia’s job, but instead of creating chaos, it led to “a beautiful experience.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Garcia and re-recording mixer Craig Henighan above.

When Alfonso Cuarón was making “Gravity,” he went to see Dolby pitch their latest sound advancement: Atmos. By equipping theaters with dozens of high-fidelity speakers above and around the viewer, it gives filmmakers the ability in the mix to pinpoint exactly where in the theater sounds radiated from when screened in an Atmos-equipped theater. For Cuarón, a director obsessed with how his audience interacts with the three-dimensional space of his cinematic worlds, he saw a tool for filmmakers who think in terms of spacial reality rather than visual-effects fantasy.

Variety’s fifth annual Artisan Awards Feb. 4 featured nine behind-the-camera artists trying to explain how complicated their work is, but all admitted that it isn’t easy.

“BlacKkKlansman” editor Barry Alexander Brown agreed that it’s often hard to describe, but he saluted his fellow honorees by saying, “You’re creating a world, with minute details. There are an endless amount of choices you have to make; yet what you do, whether it’s in sound or visual effects — it’s a mystery to most people.”

Exclusive: Netflix’s Roma was built from the memories of its writer-director Alfonso Cuarón during his childhood in Mexico City. Those memories are as much of sounds as they are of visuals, according to the filmmaker, who along with his sound gurus explain in a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Sound in television has, arguably, always played second fiddle to the images. And as with other sound professionals on the top contending shows in the sound categories, Dean Hurley, supervising sound editor on Showtime’s “Twin Peaks,” worked hard to craft a cinematic aural landscape despite challenges ranging from “the usual technical ones,” as he puts it, to the accelerated post schedules of today’s TV shows.

Few directors employ a bolder use of score and sound design in creating their cinematic universe than Darren Aronofsky. It’s for this reason the director’s fans were understandably excited by the news that on his new film “mother!” he would be collaborating for the first time with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, whose innovative soundscape approach to Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” and “Sicario” seemed like a perfect fit for Aronofsky.
It’s a collaboration that, by all accounts, went remarkably well, but resulted in a creative exploration that revealed that eliminating Jóhannsson’s score and leaning on a more expressive sound design was best for the film.

It’s a collaboration that, by all accounts, went remarkably well, but resulted in a creative exploration that revealed that eliminating Jóhannsson’s score and leaning on a more expressive sound design was best for the film.

Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.
