For a long time, "Vertigo" was consigned to the vault. Once the rights to Hitchcock's masterpiece reverted back to the director in the '60s, he kept the film under lock and key right up until his death in 1980. Universal then got their hands on the rights and in the 1990s decided "Vertigo" was due an overhaul.
The studio set about restoring the 1958 classic to its former glory via an in-depth process that involved creating new negatives in 35mm and 65mm and reportedly finding original elements of the film in the US, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Along with the visual restoration, Hitchcock's dreamy tale of obsession and madness also got a full, and controversial, audio overhaul. As former head of Universal Classics, James C. Katz, recounted upon the 1996 release of the restored movie, both the score and dialogue were given a digital stereo remaster alongside a newly recorded Foley track.

This is the actual view from Savant Central, looking due North.
What a year! I was able to take one very nice trip back East too see Washington D.C. for the first time, or at least as much as two days' walking in the hot sun and then cool rain would allow. Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff and directed by James Whale in 1931, is usually referred to as the ‘original’ movie version of Mary Shelly’s 1818 novel, but, as any real horror movie buff knows, the Karloff/Whale version of Frankenstein was not the first time Shelly’s story was filmed. Inventor Thomas Edison filmed his own 14-minute take 21 years earlier.
The story behind the first Frankenstein is a fascinating one. Thomas Edison had been the leading pioneer of the first kinetoscopes, an early motion picture viewing device, and then projected motion pictures. His Frankenstein was filmed in 1910 at Edison Motion Picture Studios located in the Bronx, New York, one of several dozen movies the studio produced that year. The studio was built between 1906 and 1907 in response to the growing demand for films.
Here’s how the March 15, 1910 edition of The Edison Kinetogram, the catalog that the Edison Company would send to distributors to hype their new films,...

"What Gordon did is create a negative that no one could mess with." In 2008, Paramount restored and re-released Francis Ford Coppola's original The Godfather trilogy in full high definition, and the result was a glorious must-have box set featuring all three movies. The restoration was supervised by Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis (who just passed away a few months ago) as well as Steven Spielberg, and this 19-minute short explores the process they went through to bring these classics back to life. Featuring interviews with Coppola, Willis, archivist Robert A. Harris, and others, it's a fun and fascinating featurette. Thanks to The Film Stage for the tip on this video. Description from the Vimeo page: "19 minutes featurette on the restoration process and describing the original color and lighting design that this endeavor was trying to restore. Features interviews with director of photography Gordon Willis, Francis Coppola, [sic] Stephen Spielberg and restoration technicians.

The story of "The Godfather" and how it was made is already the stuff of movie legend. But the story of how the movie was saved and restored to the glory of how it first looked back in 1972 is one that probably deserves a bit more attention. And if you've got about twenty minutes to spare, you'll want to give this one a look. In 2008, Paramount released "The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration" with a fresh transfer assembled by Robert A. Harris of Film Preserve, but it was a lot of work to get that movie back on store shelves. "Emulsion Rescue" is a fascinating look at the step-by-step process of restoring Francis Ford Coppola's film to its original state, and most importantly, to the visual look cinematography Gordon Willis imprinted on the film. It's fascinating stuff that gets very, very technical on how prints are made and preserved, but...

So right now you’re probably saying to yourself, there he goes again talking about some old movie made before I was born. True, but I can’t help it. It’s what I love and grew up with, and those old films still have a bigger impact on me than a lot the stuff that comes out nowadays. So here I go with another one. But, as always, a bit of background first. Robert A. Harris is true film savior. The legendary film restoration and preservation archivist has been responsible for saving some of the most important films made during the 1960’s and 1970’s as film prints, archival footage and material rapidly deteriorate. Once they’re gone, the film is too. His work on restoring and preserving...

Last year, a bit of a cinematic dust-up occurred when Sight & Sound released their once-a-decade list of Greatest Movies Of All Time. Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" had long dominated the top tier, but 2012 saw the film drop to the second slot, to be replaced by Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" as the best movie ever. Of course, such rankings are a bit silly, but that didn't stop film fans from discussing the merits of both, but we think it's safe to say—they're both great. But if you need a little more to convince you just how much Hitchcock's film needs to be treasured, you might want to take a look below. The 30-minute documentary "Obsessed With Vertigo" has landed online and it's well worth a spin. The American Movie Classics production brings together a bunch of folks—Barbara Bel Geddes, Henry Bumstead, Robert A. Harris, Patricia Hitchcock, James C. Katz,...

When is a Stanley Kubrick film not a Stanley Kubrick film? The answer: when legendary auteur was a hired gun for the one and only time in his career. Kirk Douglas installed Kubrick as director of the Roman epic Spartacus after sacking original choice Anthony Mann. Douglas and Kubrick had previously worked together on a much more recognisably Kubrickian film – the 1957 World War One drama ‘Paths of Glory’ – but on Spartacus things were different.
A big-budget, high-risk project produced by Douglas himself, reportedly after the actor failed to win the title role in 1959’s wildly successful Ben-Hur, Spartacus needed to be big at the box office and Douglas, perhaps understandably, wanted to harness Kubrick’s talent in a very direct and unflashy way. It’s the director’s most mainstream work – a picture he all but disowned entirely and which convinced him to from that point only make films on...

Do you remember the old Peanuts strips in which Linus would skitter about in anxiety, complaining to Lucy that he'd suddenly become "aware of [his] tongue?" And that he was in agony because once the awareness had come upon him, he was unable to let it go, or, worse, to think of anything else? And how enraged Lucy became—"You blockhead!"—once Linus's ravings resulted in she herself becoming aware of her own tongue? That was pretty funny stuff, no? Funny because it was true. I bring it up because now that I am aware of the more-or-less exact nature of the cyan record in three-strip Technicolor (cyan being the complementary color to red, which thus in the complicated process controls red), I see its result in all the Technicolor material in which its characteristic reveals itself, and cannot not see it.
This was something I first really heard...

The ever-loverly Audrey Hepburn is back as Eliza Doolittle in the latest release of My Fair Lady on DVD. I wasn't sure why — it had to have been put out on DVD at least once before. In fact, it was released by Warner Bros. in 1998 and then again as a "Two-Disc Special Edition" in 2004. Paramount obtained the rights last year and put out a new edition earlier this month, complete with its own set of special features.
My Fair Lady, the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, follows Ms. Doolittle, a poor flower girl with a strong Cockney accent which, due to the time period and setting, puts her at a strong social and vocational disadvantage. Looking to better her situation, she approaches Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), a phonetics expert, about speech lessons. Higgins, intrigued, bets his friend Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can pass...

Kill Devil Hills - The scary season has arrived.
In the spirit of movies that make you fear going to the movies comes The Hills Run Red on DVD. Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck) is a film geek obsessed with an ’80s film called The Hills Run Red. The movie was quickly yanked from theaters and no prints or videotapes of the film exist. He finds a clue to the movie by locating one of its stars played by Sophie Monk. After a lapdance, she agrees to take Tad and his two friends to the shooting location. Tad doesn’t realize there might be a sequel in production.
Star Tad Hilgenbrinck and director Dave Parker called up the Party Favors hotline to chat about their grisly horror film about a gruesome horror film recently released on DVD by Warner Premiere.
Tad has been in Epic Movie, Disaster Movie and Lost Boys: The Tribe,...

You can never get too much Hitchcock, especially in October. Celebrating the spookiest month of the year wouldn't be complete without taking a look at some of the Master of Suspense's best works, and with Universal re-releasing a whole bunch of them on DVD as part of their ever-expanding Legacy Series most of these films have never looked or sounded better. Recently I was given three of the Hitch's best -- 1954's Rear Window, 1958's Vertigo and 1960's Psycho -- to take another look and it's doubtful fans will be disappointed. While the transfers themselves are no different than the ones found on the Special Editions released just a few years ago, the sound quality (on one) and the special features (on all three) have been decidedly improved. Let's take a bit closer look at each title separately: Rear Window Easily one of Hitchcock's most enduring (and most popular) titles,...

The first two Godfather movies have been restored and are returning to the big screen.
Cleaned-up 35mm versions of the mafia epics - directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro - will be screened at September's Gotham Film Forum in New York before hitting movie theatres across the U.S.
The work has been carried out by Robert A. Harris, under the direction of Coppola and original cinematographer Gordon Willis.
Harris - who also worked on a Lawrence of Arabia restoration - claims his job was made tougher because high demand for prints of the movies had left the original negative in poor condition.
He tells Daily Variety, "(It was) the worst I've ever seen in a picture from the modern era."
The first two Godfathers are among the most successful and critically acclaimed movies ever made.

New York City's Film Forum will be screening both The Godfather and The Godfather Part II during a special three week engagement beginning September 12. And yes, it's a big deal. The first two installments of Francis Ford Coppola's trilogy are often featured in repertory houses, sure, but Film Forum's presentation is of newly restored 35mm prints, which were produced under the direction of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis and the supervision of film historian and master preservationist Robert A. Harris. The Godfather will run solo from September 12 through September 18, then The Goffather Part II will run solo from September 19 through September 25, and finally, back-to-back screenings will be featured from September 26 through October 2 (the double feature does, unfortunately, require separate admissions). As far as I can tell, neither of these digitally restored classics includes new computer-generated characters or backgrounds, and...
