Netflix is ready to play ball with Major League Baseball.
For the first time, the streamer will follow an MLB team — in this case, the Boston Red Sox — over the course of a full season. Netflix says it will have unprecedented access to players, coaches and executives throughout the 2024 season for a docuseries that will debut in 2025.
A second project is in the works with the Red Sox that’s expected to stream on Netflix later this year. The untitled documentary will look back at the historic 2004 Red Sox season, which culminated with one of the greatest comebacks in sports history and the franchise’s first World Series title in 86 years. The series will feature new, exclusive interviews with key players and figures from the team that broke one of baseball’s longest curses where the franchise has now won more World Series (four) in the last 20 years than any Club in MLB.

“Pendatang” is a very important film for Malaysian cinema, in a year the local industry seems to be taking a leap. The film is the country's inaugural crowd-funded and locally-produced film, and was released exclusively and for free on YouTube by the movie studio to avoid censorship and maintain its non-profit commitment stated on the Indiegogo crowd funding campaign page. From the 21st, when it was initially released, until now (December 28th) “Pendatang” (as it is its Malaysian title) has 550,000 views, perhaps suggesting a solution against the rather strict censorship policies the country implements.
The story takes place in a fictional version of Malaysia where a segregation act after the ‘927 incident' and the subsequent referendum has split the country's population according to their ethnicity, relocating the citizens to designated areas. In this setting, a Cantonese-speaking family of four is forced to relocate into a remote kampong house, despite the fact that the father,...

Chicago – The 29th Chicago Underground Film Festival (Cuff) is back from July 27th-31st, 2022, and the Opening Night film is “Provo” – about a road trip to the title city – written, directed and lead acted by Emma Thatcher.
Emma portrays Liz, an aimless underemployed ne’er-do-well in Chicago who finds out that her estranged father is dying in Provo, Utah. He is a Mormon bishop, and Liz left the religion long ago. She reluctantly decides to go to his deathbed, mostly to tell him how horrible her life was with him during her developmental years. Accompanying her on the trip is her boyfriend-she-will-not-call-boyfriend Geoffrey (Hunter Bryant), and that conflicted designation will ride along with them. As Nico the Weed Man (Nick Davis) told them before their road trip began, “may your journey take you on a path you were meant to walk.”

This year for our "thankful for" column we've been mixing it up by interviewing various team members. If you're just taking a break from family this holiday to peak around the web, please give it up for Lynn Lee.
We were first introduced to Lynn by her friend Nick Davis (of Nicks Flick Picks fame). It was yet another example of Nick's impeccable taste, not just in movies but in people. Lynn began as a contributor back in 2015 (with a Mad Men @ the Movies featuring Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce) and given the long hours that come with the lawyer life we don't see her enough but when she's here we love it. Some posts to check out include takes on both 1994's and 2019's Little Women remakes and a personal piece on Minari's grandma.
Other pieces she's written are linked from our mini interview that follows...

The hustle of show business means people not-infrequently have two projects hitting the market at the same time.
Even so, filmmaker Nick Davis is the creative force behind one of the more unusual doubleheaders in recent memory. He directed ESPN “30 for 30” limited series Once Upon a Time in Queens, an account of the World Series-winning, earth-scorching 1986 New York Mets. The two-night, four hour docuseries, whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel, premieres tonight and concludes tomorrow. Also today, Knopf has published Davis’s book, Competing with Idiots, a dual portrait of Joseph and Herman Mankiewicz that had been in the works for nearly two decades. The Hollywood royals were his great-uncle and grandfather, respectively.
“I’ve thought about what common ground there is between these projects,” Davis said in an interview with Deadline. “And I think what it is is that I have no memory of not being Herman Mankiewicz’s grandson.

With nicknames like Doc, The Kid, Nails, Mookie, Bobby O, El Sid, The Straw Man, and Mex, it might be easy to confuse players on the 1986 World Series champion New York Mets with characters from an old 1940s war movie or Western — the kind of project Herman J. Mankiewicz might have worked on in the Golden Age of Hollywood. So perhaps it is fitting that 35 years after the iconic Mets season, a filmmaker with direct ties to the Mankiewicz brothers turned the team’s no-holds-barred title run into a documentary, ESPN’s “Once Upon a Time in Queens.”
“I just felt like, ‘Wow, this is like being with the Beatles in Hamburg,” director Nick Davis, who is the grandson of the Oscar-winning “Citizen Kane” screenwriter, tells Gold Derby. “I would like us to win more world championships, as a Mets fan, but I don’t know that we’re ever...

There was really only way for “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” ESPN’s four-part documentary that chronicles the 1986 New York Mets championship team, to reach its crescendo: with the most famous dribbler up the first base line in baseball history.
Bill Buckner’s infamous error that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory for the Boston Red Sox, who were one out away from a World Series championship, allowed the Mets to score the winning run and cap off a three-run comeback. But for director Nick Davis, that play presented a much different challenge.
How do you find a new way to show one of the most famous plays in baseball history?
“We had access to all this never-before-seen footage or rarely seen footage from this documentary crew that followed the Mets in ’86 off and on for Major League Baseball. I don’t think anybody had seen the side...

ESPN examined the 1990s Chicago Bulls in a celebrated documentary series and probed the fortunes of the 1970s New York Yankees in a serialized drama. Now the sports-media giant has big plans for the New York Mets.
ESPN Films plans to release “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” a four-part series on the 1986 Mets, later this year on both ESPN and ESPN Plus. The series, produced under the umbrella of the Disney unit’s “30 for 30” documentary unit, is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Sal “Cousin Sal” Iacono, Kimmelot’s Scott Lonker, and MLB’s Nick Trotta. It is directed and produced by Nick Davis.
The program will tell the story of the Mets’ World Series comeback, using hours of never-before-seen footage of the team. Players featured include: Bobby Ojeda; Darryl Strawberry; manager Davey Johnson; Dwight Gooden; Keith Hernandez; Kevin Mitchell; Lenny Dykstra; Mookie Wilson; Roger McDowell; Sid Fernandez; and Wally Backman.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

The screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz — whose life is the inspiration for Mank, heading into the Academy Awards with 10 nominations, the most of any film — was himself an Oscar winner in 1941 for Citizen Kane, sharing the honor with Orson Welles. But Mankiewicz did not attend the ceremony. Here, one of Mankiewicz’s grandsons, Nick Davis, explains what really led to his no-show that night.
My grandfather Herman Mankiewicz was nominated for an Oscar for writing maybe the greatest movie of all time, Citizen Kane. With David Fincher’s Mank, a movie about Herman’s writing of the first draft of the screenplay for ...

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Love and Monsters,” “The Midnight Sky,” “Mulan,” “The One and Only Ivan,” and “Tenet.” Our odds currently indicate that “Tenet” (31/10) will be the winner, followed in order by “The Midnight Sky” (39/10), “Mulan” (9/2), “The One and Only Ivan” (9/2), and “Love and Monsters” (9/2).
Included among the 20 individuals in this year’s lineup are six past nominees, three of whom have triumphed here at least once before. The “Love and Monsters” team consists entirely of rookie nominees. The remaining 10 first-timers are: Matthew Kasmir, Max Solomon, and David Watkins (“The Midnight Sky”), Sean Faden, Steve Ingram, and Seth Maury (“Mulan”), Santiago Colomo Martinez, Greg Fisher, and Ben Jones (“The One and Only Ivan”), and David Lee (“Tenet”).

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

“Ivan is a beautiful, soulful, strong, passionate character. He had to carry the whole movie,” declares Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis on the main attraction in the Disney live action family drama “The One and Only Ivan.”
“A lot of the work is just right here,” he says while framing his hands around his face, “looking into his eyes and the expression and emotion and all the feelings that he had to convey to the audience.” Davis is back at the Oscars with his second nomination (after his first for “The Dark Knight” in 2009), alongside his colleagues Greg Fisher, Ben Jones and Santiago Colomo Martinez. Updated: Mar. 4, 2021
Awards Prediction Commentary: “Mank,” “The Midnight Sky” and “Tenet” feel “safe” for the moment and then there are two interchangeable spots that could go to the documentary “Welcome to Chechnya” or perhaps a bigger film like “Mulan” after debuting on Disney Plus.

“My child, Shiloh brought the book to me, she had read it and she loved it,” Angelina Jolie says recalling the first time she had seen “The One and Only Ivan,” written by Katherine Applegate.
Exploring why her child was affected by the book, why she loved Ivan, a silverback gorilla, and why he spoke to her led to Jolie stepping in, not just as a voice actress, but as a producer on Disney’s adaptation of the novel.
Not only was Ivan based on a real gorilla, Jolie thought it was a great way for her child to learn about “what activism can do and what sanctuaries are.” But more importantly, “There’s family and self-discovery,” she says of the story.

In advance of the Oscars, Nick Davis has been looking back at the Academy races of 20 years ago, spotlighting movies he’d never seen and what they teach us about those categories, then and now.
After that trip back to the Documentary race, we're ending the week by spotlighting the other category that's taken the hugest strides to adjust its nominating process and champion better work. It’s also no accident that I’m ending with a category that Nathaniel has tracked with unusual care and detail since Oscar-focused websites have existed—indeed, long before many of his peers paid more than cursory attention. The 72nd Academy Awards took place eight years before the transformative addition of an Executive Committee to the vetting process that produces the annual roster for "Best Foreign Language Film," which of course this year got rebranded as "Best International Film". This category used to be heavy with inoffensive mediocrities,...

The Blair Witch Project
When I taught my Winter 2017 seminar about the movies of 1999, to a classroom of first-year college students who were all born in the last two years of the millennium, one of the trickiest ideas to historicize was how decisively the visibility and cultural stature of documentary cinema has shifted over the last 20 years. Compared to the decades when I grew up, nonfiction cinema has reached much further outside a relatively niche audience who tracked that filmmaking tradition. The explanations are too numerous to get into here, though they include all of the following: cheaper and more numerous technologies for recording and assembling footage; proliferating platforms for distributing and watching nonfiction films,...

This year, The Lion King joins Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) as only the third fully animated feature to be nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. I’ve read that tidbit in several places and assume that it must be true, according to people who know better than I do. I wasn’t sure why the movie that defeated Kubo, the 2016 remake of The Jungle Book, did not belong on this list, until I remembered that Mowgli was played by a living, breathing actor, Neel Sethi. Actually, what I mean is that I remembered Mowgli was in the movie, period. And I actually didn’t remember,...

Spotlight Movie: Snow Falling on Cedars
Today's case study from the 72nd Academy Awards is a less auspicious instance than yesterday's of a movie sneaking onto Oscar's ballot with just one nomination. I'd also call it an example of good filmmaking that, in context, arguably constitutes bad filmmaking, or at least disappointing and misguided filmmaking. Cinematographer Robert Richardson is not the exclusive or even the primary defendant in the case I’m going to make. He was probably executing to the best of his ability the mandates of a director and a producing team intent on the picturesque. Still, I’m not sure we needed to reward him for following such dubious orders. And now,...

the surprise winner
Spotlight Movie: The Red Violin
One of the most exciting things that can happen on Oscar night is when a movie with no other nominations wins one of the “craft” or “technical” or “below-the-line” categories—three bad names for the races where very few contenders are celebrities. In a year like the current one, where the Best Picture nominees ran the table to a historic degree, and consuming most of the spots in every other race, we have even fewer prospects than usual to see this occur. I’d love to watch The Lighthouse win Cinematography or Ad Astra win Sound Mixing, both because they deserve these victories on merit and...
