Blu-Ray Review: Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ a Modern Masterpiece

11 November 2009 1:23 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Michael Mann might first seem the ideal fit for Blu-Ray. He’s a notorious perfectionist, apparent in every frame of his remarkable output of films that includes such great modern classics as “Manhunter,” “The Insider,” “Collateral,” and “Public Enemies”. But one of Mann’s best films, “Heat,” recently released on Blu-Ray, is an interesting example of a director who has a vision that shouldn’t necessarily be overly polished by the HD format. The film looks like Mann wants it - gritty, dark, and like, well, actual film. It’s a release that some buyers may think doesn’t look “HD enough,” but to this Mann aficionado thinks that it looks just right.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

As for the film itself, it’s one of the rare ’90s films that gets better every time I see it. It’s a battle of wills between two of the most legendary actors »

Heat and Logan’s Run Blu-ray Reviews

10 November 2009 10:26 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.

Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

DVD Review: ‘Natural Born Killers’ Unrated Director’s Cut

10 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Oliver’s Stone’s Natural Born Killers is a movie that, even with its political and social overtones, still stands the test of time. It’s a bravura tour de force motion picture that still pushes the limits of the form to this day. And now, a brand new Uncut Version and Director’s Cut has been released by Warner Home Video, which is sure to delight fans of this controversial motion picture.

An extremely violent satire of modern media that still asks questions 15 years later, the film is a brutal, bloody, surreal and stylized journey along with terrible twosome Mickey and Mallory Knox. Their tri-state killing spree brings questions of the media and its obsession with “celebrity” into focus. Even though this film was created before people like Paris Hilton, or whomever, could be considered a “celebrity” simply by virtue of being on the Internet or videotaping themselves having sex, »

Heat Blu-ray Review

9 November 2009 10:12 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Though there are notable exceptions (Ali, Last of the Mohicans), it is not an unreasonable stretch that Michael Mann has made a career telling stories about cops and robbers. From Thief (1981) and Manhunter (1986) through Miami Vice (2006) and Public Enemies (2009), he has produced tense explorations into the cerebral underpinnings of what makes players tick both in and outside of our legal system. Heat (1995) could very well be considered his crowning achievement in this territory, and its two most iconic scenes epitomize what the writer/director's classic crime drama is all about.

The no holds bar shootout in downtown Los Angeles during a broad daylight bank heist escape is one of the most thrilling firefights put to celluloid and has been among my favorites to sample out of context on DVD over the years (and its all that more awesome on Blu-ray!). Not just a great piece of realistic, machismo gunplay, what »

Natural Born Killers Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray Review

30 October 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When you walk into Natural Born Killers, you wonder what drugs the makers were taking. And maybe for a little bit you might want to partake as well, but it’s probably best to not. Regardless of one’s sobriety whilst watching Natural Born Killers, there is no denying that is both a trip and a ride, which is fair enough as much of it is a road picture. My review after the jump.

The film follows Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis); two kids in love with a taste for murder. The film starts with them running havoc over a diner, and from the get go, Stone gets a great comic sensibility, with the deaths exaggerated to Looney Tunes sensibilities, but like someone who has experienced death up close, he seems unable to romanticize what they’re doing, his director’s eye makes you also feel queasy in partaking. »

[DVD Review] Natural Born Killers: The Director’s Cut

29 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Natural Born Killers is the black sheep of the Oliver Stone filmography. Though it has received some critical acclaim, it has never received the same treatment as Stone’s more prestigious films like Platoon, Born on The Fourth of July and JFK. This comes from a host of factors. First, at the time of its release, the movie ironically became the primary target for a movement against violence in television and film. Second, and more importantly, it doesn’t really feel like an Oliver Stone film. Stone’s films are typically epic and historic, larger than life in their content and the lessons they teach. Nbk is larger than life too, but in a very different way. It attacks our sensibility about culture and the way we sense things. It tests our understanding of good and evil by proposing that no one is good.

Sizemore Hit With Demand For Child Support

25 October 2009 7:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Troubled actor Tom Sizemore is facing legal action after allegedly failing to pay child support.

Jinele McIntire has accused the Saving Private Ryan star of leaving her to single-handedly raise their twins boys, born in 2005, and is now demanding $58,000 (£392,000) from the actor, according to legal documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this month.

McIntire insists Sizemore has "made no attempt to see" or provide for his children, while continuing to make up to $200,000 (£133,000) for his appearances in reality TV shows Sober House and Celebrity Rehab.

She is also seeking health insurance for the children, as well as $50,000 (£33,000) for attorney's fees.

The new lawsuit adds to a growing list of Sizemore's legal woes - he was charged with spousal battery following his arrest for an alleged attack on a woman in August and was found guilty of assaulting then-girlfriend Heidi Fleiss in 2003.

He was also arrested in May on an outstanding warrant for drug charges. »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Natural Born Killers’ Still Resonates Years Later

22 October 2009 7:59 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers” is easily one of the best films of the ’90s, an experimental, daring, visually mesmerizing study of not just violence but America’s obsession with it. At the peak of his directorial abilities, one of the best filmmakers of the ’80s and ’90s turned his lens on the way we turn evil people into tabloid heroes and he did it with such vibrant style that “Nbk” has just as much resonance as it did fifteen years ago.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis star as Mickey and Mallory Knox, a pair of love-crossed serial killers who have upgraded the exploits of Bonnie and Clyde for a new generation. Their dark pasts of fire and gasoline have exploded into the kind of story that journalists and TV shows dream about. Robert Downey Jr. co-stars as a journalist whose attention feed the murders of »

Mindy McCready gives us early scoop on the crazy upcoming season of 'Celebrity Rehab'

15 October 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The third season of VH1's addiction reality show Celebrity Rehab promises to be a doozy when it kicks off in January. This time out, Rehab-ers include former country star Mindy McCready, Mackenzie Phillips, Kari Ann Peniche (of McSteamy nude-tape fame), Heidi Fleiss, and Tom Sizemore. McCready -- who endured a major downfall after her multi-platinum breakthrough in the mid '90s, complete with jail terms and suicide attempts -- tells EW that it was quite an experience. Though she says she went on Cr just to get “a big fat check,” she now credits the three and a half »

Tom Sizemore's ex-girlfriend Heidi Fleiss had a close call in June when the car she was travelling in crashed and flipped over in a high-speed accident.

Fleiss and her pal, who was driving at the time of the accident, escaped with only minor cuts and bruises, reports TMZ.com.

DVD: Review:American Son

1 September 2009 10:01 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The makers of the painfully earnest Iraq drama American Son probably began packing for Sundance before shooting even began. The film has all the hallmarks of typical film-festival fodder: a popular lightweight (Nick Cannon of Wild ’N Out, Drumline, and being-married-to-Mariah Carey fame) out to prove his chops as a dramatic actor, big-name character actors in supporting roles (Chi McBride, Tom Sizemore, Jay Hernandez), a Serious, Timely Issue (the Iraq war), and a tremblingly sincere tone. Sure enough, American Son played Sundance in 2008 en route to a discreet direct-to-dvd burial.  In a passable lead performance, Cannon plays a proud ... »

[DVD Review] American Son

1 September 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

This summer saw the release of one of the best Iraq War-related films ever made and one of the best movies of the summer. Of course, I’m talking about The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow’s white-knuckle thriller about a bomb disposal unit stationed in Baghdad. The film succeeds not only on the strength of the disarmament sequences but also because it never questions the role of the men at war. It’s almost as if it wants to say, “You’re in the suck…now deal with it.” American Son, an indie feature seeing release on DVD, is in a similar boat but makes its points with considerably less bombast but also a lack of grace. A slow moving film that mistakes subtlety for substance, American Son nevertheless has something to offer discerning viewers.

Unlike most war films, American Son takes place in the 96 hours prior to the deployment »
