Farber on Film: The Complete Film Writings of Manny Farber

14 November 2009 6:13 AM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

While this season of taking stock finds us tinkering on our lists of the best films of the year - best of the decade, even - along comes a book that throws all our efforts into humbling perspective. Never mind years and decades. Farber on Film: The Complete Film Writings of Manny Farber presents us with the work of a lifetime, collecting what for too long has gone uncollected, the reviews and essays, stray thoughts and well-targeted rants of "the liveliest, smartest, most original film critic this country ever produced," as none other than Susan Sontag put it.

Over the next couple of weeks, The Auteurs will be celebrating this landmark publication with new appreciations of Manny Farber and his work; the full text of editor Robert Polito's introduction as well as his selections from the book of previously unpublished works by Farber; and a short film by Paul Schrader on one of Farber's paintings. »

How Glorious 39 could help America learn to love Stephen Poliakoff

13 November 2009 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He's our Paul Schrader, on an idiosyncratic journey, so why haven't my Us friends heard of Poliakoff?

Whenever my American friends ask me to name a good English director they've not heard of, I always push them towards the work of Stephen Poliakoff, whose Glorious 39 arrives this week. And those who take up my recommendation/challenge usually come back about three weeks later, after a bracing immersion in whatever traces of Poliakoff can be found in La's video stores, filled with gratitude and suddenly obsessed with Poliakoff's recurring themes: ancient family secrets, the power of images and documents to realign our understanding of histories both national and familial, and London as a city of secrets, forever yielding up surprises and shocks from its subterranean depths and farthest-flung outer suburbs; all somehow viewed by Poliakoff with the fresh-peeled eyeballs of a newly landed immigrant.

Poliakoff's American profile is diffuse and indistinct, »

Motion Picture Purgatory: Auto Focus

3 November 2009 12:47 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This week Trembles takes us a little off the beaten path into a true tale of sex addiction and murder: Paul Schrader's 2002 Auto Focus starring Greg Kinnear as TV star Bob Crane and Willem Dafoe as his video technician buddy John Carpenter (nope, not director John Carpenter of Halloween fame, but rather a sleazy swinger who gets credit for turning Crane into a sex addict).

For those unfamiliar with the story, Crane, star of 1960's TV series "Hogan's Heroes", dove into the freewheeling spirit of the 60s and 70s with relish, having affairs with numerous women and videotaping his exploits with Carpenter's help. He was murdered in a Scottsdale, Arizona, motel room in 1978, a crime that remains officially unsolved to this day.

Exclusive: Paul Schrader On His Unlikely Reinvention as a Bollywood Auteur

9 October 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

On paper, the idea of Paul Schrader leaving Hollywood for Bollywood shouldn't work. Schrader's had a hand in some of the most iconic American films of the last century -- he scripted Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ and directed films like American Gigolo and Affliction -- and the dark themes that have long fascinated him would seem a mismatch for the joyous, colorful world of Indian cinema. And yet, that's exactly what makes the concept so immediately compelling; like Steven Soderbergh's planned Cleopatra musical, the idea of Paul Schrader directing a Bollywood musical is simply too bold to ignore.

After reading the announcement of the project (titled Xtrme City) in Variety this week, I called up Schrader to learn just what he has in mind. "I've made a career out of doing oddball films that have a very niche market," he admitted to me, right off the bat. »

--Terry Gilliam is getting back to his work on the man of La Mancha, Don Quixote. The filmmaker's seemingly cursed efforts at bringing the mad knight to the silver screen seem to have finally paid off, likely thanks to the goodwill his work on the soon-to-be-released "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" has fostered. Said Gilliam of "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote": "We're up and running again, we've rewritten the script and finally got it back, the budget's come in... and I think we've found our Quixote! But who's it going to be? Well, I'm not going to tell you, but it'll start next Spring." (Empire Online)

--Accomplished filmmaker Paul Schrader (he wrote "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"!) is coming back to Hollywood. Halfway at least. In a joint Hollywood/Bollywood production, Schrader will direct "Xtrme City," which follows a U.S. ranger and an Indian commando as »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

Paul Schrader Gets Xtreme

6 October 2009 9:57 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The man who gave the world Travis Bickle and the most bad-ass Jesus ever, is set to return to theaters, as writer-director Paul Schrader has set his sights on “Xtreme City” a bilingual film set in the bustling streets of Mumbai. The film, which will see Schrader collaborating with Bollywood writer, Mushtaq Shiekh, will be financed independently by sports agent Dwight Manley, which makes sense considering Schrader’s “go to hell” attitude toward Hollywood. Hit the jump for a quick plot synopsis and a few musings on Paul Schrader.

Variety has reported that Schrader’s “Xtreme City” will be a tale focusing on a a former U.S. Ranger who teams up with an Indian commando in order to find the Ranger’s kidnapped sister-in-law, who is being held by a powerful Mumbai crime lord.
