Phoenix found his place in the DC Universe and even won an Oscar for his performance as the twisted villain, Joker.
Derrickson was associated with the Doctor Strange movie, released in 2016. The film was made on a reported budget of $165 million and earned a staggering $677.8 million globally. Joaquin Phoenix "didn't really belong" in 'Doctor Strange'.The 49-year-old actor was once eyed to play the lead role in the Marvel movie - but director Scott Derrickson now admits that Benedict Cumberbatch is much more suited to the part.Scott, 57, told SlashFilm: "I met with a bunch of actors, and Joaquin was the one that I spent the most time with. "As we continued to talk, it became clear to me that Joaquin didn't really belong in that movie and probably never belonged in the MCU. "He's a very specific guy with very specific goals as an actor, and a very specific way of performing. I think it became clear to both of us that this might not be a good fit, really is what it came down to."Scott "spent a couple of long afternoons" with Joaquin, but Benedict was always his number one choice for the role.

Till now everyone has seen those incredible clips of Benedict Cumberbatch owning the stage in theaters. Well, what many don’t realize is that there was a moment when he almost said no to playing Doctor Strange. Why? Because he was getting ready to take on the iconic Shakespearean tragedy ‘Hamlet’, the same play that’s now making waves all over the internet.

It was quite the dilemma for him, caught between the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and his deep love for the stage. Yet, as they often say, the show had to go on. Ultimately, his dedication to his craft won, and the rest is history.
Why Benedict Cumberbatch Initially Turned Down Doctor Strange?
Benedict Cumberbatch still to this day continues to mesmerize audiences with his unforgettable performance in Hamlet. Whether it’s through reels or YouTube shorts, there are countless reminders of his undeniable talent.

The Dark Knight trilogy, directed by Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan, is considered one of the best superhero franchises out there. Starring Christian Bale in the lead as Bruce Wayne/Batman, the movies went on to become hugely successful and even got a posthumous Oscar win for actor Heath Ledger, who played Joker in the second movie.
Tom Hardy’s Bane and Christian Bale’s Batman in The Dark Knight Rises
But nothing is ever perfect, and the trilogy is no exception. At the end of the third movie, which saw the showdown between Batman and his nemesis, Bane, played by Tom Hardy, there were some discrepancies. Marion Cotillard played the role of Talia al-Ghul, the daughter of Ras al-Ghul, who comes to Gotham for revenge as Batman killed her father. And her death scene in the movie is something fans have never been to find of.

The iconic character of Doctor Strange in the MCU has become one of the most loved ones over the years, and a major credit for this goes to none other than the fan-favorite Benedict Cumberbatch. In fact, the 47-year-old actor was so widely loved in the role that even those fans who rallied for Joaquin Phoenix for the role can’t imagine someone else playing the character.

That being said, Phoenix got really, really close to nabbing that role from Cumberbatch. However, fortunately enough, things went in the favor of The Imitation Game actor. What’s more, even though his involvement in the movie cost Marvel millions of dollars due to scheduling conflicts, the franchise still agreed, as per what the director of the 2016 movie Scott Derrickson recently confessed.

Dr. Strange is at this point one of the most notable characters in the MCU, and one of the most important. Despite his origin story being a bit more humble than today’s releases, he managed to perform strong and will be a huge part of the MCU going forward.
Even though Benedict Cumberbatch is by many fans considered to be the perfect Dr. Strange, it wasn’t always like that, the role was originally supposed to go to Joaquin Phoenix, but one decision altered the course of the MCU, and endangered ‘Doctor Strange’s’ box office since the role simply had to go to Cumberbatch.
In his recent Slash Film interview director of the origin movie, Scott Derrickson explained how Marvel Studios sacrificed the summer release to nab the popular actor. The studio went along with their proposal and it paid off in the long run.

Doctor Strange has become one of the most recognizable and significant characters in the MCU. Although his beginnings were more modest compared to recent releases, he has emerged as a pivotal figure and will play a significant role in the future of the MCU.
While many fans now see Benedict Cumberbatch as the ideal Doctor Strange, it wasn’t always that way. Originally, the role was intended for Joaquin Phoenix. However, a single decision changed the direction of the MCU. Ultimately, casting Cumberbatch was deemed essential for the success of “Doctor Strange” at the box office.
In a recent interview with Slash Film, Scott Derrickson, the director of the origin movie, explained how Marvel Studios opted to forgo a summer release to secure the popular actor. The studio agreed to the plan, and it ultimately proved to be a wise decision.

When Marvel Studios was searching for its Doctor Strange in the mid-2010s, a lot of very interesting names were in the mix. Chief among them was Joaquin Phoenix, an actor it was hard to imagine ever joining the MCU.
Ultimately, it didn't happen, and Benedict Cumberbatch landed the role. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing the Sorcerer Supreme now, of course, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed just how close the Joker star came to being cast in an interview with Slash Film.
"Well, all I'll say is I spent some time with him. I spent a couple of long afternoons with him and really was really impressed with him personally and his thought process," the filmmaker explained. Back in 2016, director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill's "Doctor Strange" walked so the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could run. The underrated origin film might not have indulged in the same kind of cameo trend and crossover hype tactics as some of the bigger titles that followed in its footsteps, not to mention reaching the same heights at the box office, but the movie still established quite a few benchmarks the franchise would continue to rely upon. For one thing, Derrickson and his creative team clearly defined the visuals of the cosmic side of the MCU -- something we've seen even in the latest "Deadpool & Wolverine" trailer. For another, taking the time to flesh out Stephen Strange's unique backstory allowed subsequent projects to hit the ground running (such as "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" or the Disney+ "What If?" series) and further...

Scott Derrickson has been working pretty steadily in Hollywood for just about 25 years now, and in that time, he's amassed a fascinating collection of credits. I had the good fortune of speaking with him recently about his pretty wild career from top to bottom. From his feature directorial debut "Hellraiser: Inferno" to his Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster "Doctor Strange," Derrickson has a varied resume, to put it lightly. From insanely high highs to borderline tragic lows, the man's career has endured an awful lot. Taken as a whole, his filmography is a compelling case study. It's also one that has a very clear "before" and "after" element to it.
The big moment of change, at first glance, was his 2012 low-budget horror hit "Sinister," a movie that helped establish the Blumhouse model of success in addition to being regarded as one of the scariest movies ever made. It's something I had...

There is something about the period of the Napoleonic Wars and the personality of Napoleon Bonaparte himself that keeps world-renowned filmmakers returning to the subject. Maybe it's the aesthetics of the early 19th century and the epic battles of the time. Maybe it's the fascination of the life of the great French general and emperor that ambitious filmmakers are drawn to.
Whatever the reason, each of these films either failed commercially or received mixed reviews from critics. Abel Gance's Napoleon, Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace and Waterloo, Peter Weir's Master and Commander, and of course Ridley Scott's recent Napoleon – despite epic scales, a talented cast and crew, and sometimes even a great script, all of the above films failed in one way or another.

Joker became a topic of discussion as soon as it hit theaters in 2019. And it's not just that Todd Phillips' movie has an ambiguous morality, completely different from typical comic book movies. The director made the audience doubt the reality of what was happening on the screen, allowing everyone to decide which events really happened and which only existed in the main character’s imagination.
The film was initially positioned as an independent work, in no way connected with comic books and especially with the DC cinematic universe. Joker refers more to the early films of Martin Scorsese, often citing Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy.
And even the makeup of the main character does not resemble the classic image of the Joker, but the famous killer clown Pogo, aka John Gacy. This reference is confirmed by the name of the Pogo club where Arthur performs.

Brian Cox probably didn’t even have to engage the whole power of his acting talent in his recently ended black comedy drama show Succession — his character’s boldness and straightforward manner of speaking the truth seem to be a part of the actor’s personality too.
While nobody would find a safe place to hide from Cox’s harsh criticism towards actors and films at HistFest a couple of weeks ago, it wasn’t only Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon that got all the heat, but also Mel Gibson’s biggest achievement in the industry.

At the same HistFest the actor revealed that he’s definitely not a fan of Braveheart, Mel Gibson’s 1995 directorial and acting feature that took home five Academy awards, including for Best Picture.

Todd Phillips’ sequel for his biggest hit about the DC’s evil character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix is still quite far from the theatrical release, but the talks about the upcoming movie haven’t fallen silent ever since it was announced.
Joker: Folie À Deux will now bring Harley Quinn, Joker’s love interest, to the main stage thus forming a sinister duo driven by their common passion for villainy.
And though the film’s first trailer released a couple of weeks ago has seemingly confirmed what everyone was waiting for, some fans were attentive enough to notice tiny details that could point to a major plot twist.
Numerous discussions on Reddit have been heating up since the trailer was released on April 9 — the short sneak peek left ones in a raving delight and others in bewilderment caused by suspicions that concern Joker and Harley’s relationships’ real nature.

Landing the role of the Joker would undoubtedly be an ‘I made it’ moment for any actor. But for Kevin Michael Richardson, stepping over the shoes of his idol, Mark Hamill, who arguably is the best Joker the DC Animated Universe has ever seen, made him hesitant.
Batman: The Animated Series
While some actors resort to extreme measures, such as allegedly sending unsettling gifts like dead rats to their colleagues, in an effort to embody the Batman villain, Richardson channeled all the “frustration” and “anger” of replacing Hamill into his audition tape. This ultimately paid off, earning him the role.

Ridley Scott’s Alien is widely considered one of the most influential science fiction and horror films of all time. Alien received mixed reviews at the time of release but managed to find success at the box office. Scott was meticulous with the film and did everything in his capacity to bring his vision to the screen. It also meant that he had to make some wise choices about what made it to the screen and what was removed from the film.

From his lack of interest in Jeremy Strong’s Method acting to his distaste for Warner Bros. Discovery’s handling of Turner Classic Movies, Brian Cox has never been a man who hides his true opinions. The latest target of his colorful ire? Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon.”
In a recent appearance at HitsFest in London (via The Standard), Cox made it clear that he was no fan of Scott’s film, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous French general-turned-emperor. While the “Succession” star didn’t have anything redeeming to say about the film as a whole, he placed most of the blame on Phoenix for his performance.
“It’s terrible,” Cox said of the film. “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix. It really is appalling. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s totally his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott helps him.

In the late 1990s Joker writer-director Todd Phillips, then applying his trade as an underground documentary filmmaker shot a non-fiction project titled Frat House, which nabbed the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance before being promptly acquired by HBO Films.
“The premise of the documentary is that he pledged fraternities at colleges,” John Sloss, producer, founder and CEO of Cinetic Media, told an audience at the Sands Film Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland. He was discussing the pic as part of an onstage Q&a about the current state of documentary filmmaking alongside Molly Thompson, Head of Documentaries and Non-Fiction at Apple TV+, and Oscar-winning producer Melanie Miller.
Sloss had been representing Phillips at the time. Despite the early buzz surrounding the pic, it was never officially released. HBO shelved the project.

I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...

Missing Pedro Pascal already? We completely understand you – after 2023 literally became the year of big releases with the actor, 2024 seems painfully empty without him.
That's why we've collected the most anticipated projects with Pedro Pascal.
1. Gladiator II
Release Date: November 22, 2024
The filming of the sequel to Ridley Scott's cult epic, Gladiator II, was frozen due to the strikes, but now work on the set has been successfully completed.
Talk of a sequel circulated throughout Hollywood for more than twenty years after the first film's successful release, suggesting almost biblical and fantastic tales of battles in the afterlife.
As a result, Gladiator II moderated its ambitions: Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film, will be at the center of the story. As a boy, he was inspired by the exploits of the gladiator Maximus in the arena and will apparently follow in the footsteps of Russell Crowe’s character.

Nowadays recognized mostly as the Joker actor from the accoladed 2019 banger movie and the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, Joaquin Phoenix has a lot of remarkable roles in his portfolio. The one in the 2013 science fiction drama can be considered to be his best performance, even though it was not the role for which he received his Oscar award.
The plot of this movie revolves around a lonely man, played by Phoenix, in the aftermath of the impending divorce with the love of his life. His boring life in the big futuristic Los Angeles instantly changes when he meets a wonderfully smart young woman.
She starts to chat with the main character and accompanies him everywhere, and their relationship gradually develops from friendship to obvious romantic attraction to each other. However, there is one severe obstacle on their way - she is not real.

When describing a big star’s new release, two clichés are frequently used: it is highly anticipated and long-awaited. Well, the 11th studio album by pop sensation Taylor Swift can’t exactly be called ‘long awaited’—just 18 months have passed since the release of her previous album, Midnights. The Grammy winner made her ‘highly anticipated’ 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, available on Friday, April 19, 2024.
The 16-track album is peaceful and enjoyable to listen to, but if you read the lyrics carefully—as most Swift fans do—you will discover a convoluted and disorganized stream of thought where Swift swings between waves of introspection, rage, longing, and grief.

Also, it is interesting to note that this latest album credits the two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone for her work on the song Florida!!!.

Over the past several days, a new viral story spread around social media when (thanks to a New York Post write-up), the juxtaposition of the terms “A.I.” and “girlfriend” became a chilling promise of things to come. That’s at least one way to interpret Late Checkout CEO Greg Isenberg’s prediction that the next growth industry for artificial intelligence is “dating.”
In a social media post on X, which is the platform formerly known as Twitter, Isenberg recounted how he met a 24-year-old “single guy” who told him he spends $10,000 a month on “AI girlfriends.” The anonymous man even described his A.I. “dating apps” as comfort at the end of the day.
“The market cap for Match Group is $9B,” Isenberg wrote. “Someone will build the AI-version of Match Group and make $1B+.” While Isenberg’s own personal feelings about that prospect remain ambiguous, the impact of...

Joker is the clown prince of crime in the DC universe and Batman’s most deadly rival, but the villain is getting more traction given the character’s recent outing by Joaquin Phoenix. The actor’s endearing performance has shed some new light and added a new layer of depth to the villain.
Often viewed as mentally unstable and insane, many were intrigued by the prospect of having an unhinged villain, and one fan utilized the power of Unreal Engine 5 and showcased both the capabilities of the engine and how the character could fit in a world like GTA 6.

Brian Cox has gained a reputation in recent years as being, well, frank and outspoken in his opinions. That goes for his stance on method acting in particular, which he deems “f*cking annoying” and blames Daniel Day-Lewis for its popularity. Cox’s 2021 book had some choice words about fellow actors, too, including Johnny Depp (“so overblown, so overrated”) and Edward Norton (“a bit of a pain in the arse”), among others.

Released theatrically November 22, 2023, director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" feature, starring Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Fantastic Four”) earned Oscar nominations for ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Visual Effects’, with Scott now readying his director’s cut, with a streaming runtime of more than four hours:
"...the film is a personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of the addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, 'Josephine'.
"The film also captures Napoleon’s famous battles, his relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as a military leader, war visionary and war criminal.”
Historically Napoleon Bonaparte rose to prominence during the latter stages of the 'French Revolution' and its associated wars in Europe. As 'Napoleon I', he was 'Emperor' of the French from 1804 to 1815.

Brian Cox Calls Joaquin Phoenix’s Performance In Napoleon “Truly Terrible”; Pokes Fun At His Name, “Wackeen… Wacky” (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Succession Star Brian Cox is not one to mince his words. The Veteran Actor, who has played timeless roles, has always made headlines because of his candor. He had feelings about Joaquin Phoenix‘s Napolean portrayal and is letting everyone know. Cox made some shocking revelations and said, “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix.” Ouch, but if you think that is harsh, you will be surprised by his statements.
Brian played the role of Media Moghul Logan Roy, the patriarch who puts his kids through a game of hoops and leaps to take over the seat of the media conglomerate in the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. The actor, the polar opposite of his character, has been known to stir feelings up because of his new statements at a London fest.

Napoleon may have lost at Waterloo, but Joaquin Phoenix has lost to Brian Cox. Cox – who has been no stranger to speaking his mind on just about any topic that irks him – has now targeted Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, particularly calling out the lead performance of Joaquin Phoenix. Go on, Brian, give ‘em the “Logan Roy” – you know what we’re talking about!
Speaking at HistFest in London (via The Standard), Brian Cox lashed out at Napoleon, saying it was “Terrible. It’s terrible. A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix. It really is appalling. From movies to video games, Brian Cox has done it all. The versatile actor also has a ton of experience in theatre acting having done plays like The Great Society and King Lear. Recently, he has added yet another play to the long list of his theatre roles – Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The play is directed by award-winning director Jeremy Herrin.
Brian Cox in Succession
Written by Eugene O’Neill between 1939-1941, Long Day’s Journey into Night is considered one of the greatest American plays. Needless to say, anyone who dares to bring the play to life now is going to be harshly judged by the theatre critics. However, Brian Cox is extremely furious at the critics for comparing his performance in the play to that of his iconic role in Succession.

True to form, actor Brian Cox doesn’t hold back when critiquing Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. He doesn’t have much time for Braveheart, either.
Seldom one to mince his words, Brian Cox has offered an unfiltered review of Ridley Scott’s 2023 historical epic, Napoleon. The film was, the Succession actor said, “Terrible.”
Nor did Cox have much time for Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the title figure. It was “a truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix,” he added.
Cox made the comments in a talk hosted by Clive Myrie called History on Stage and Screen. It was part of HistFest, an event held at the British Library earlier in April; during it, Cox waded in not only on Napoleon’s historical accuracy, but also the quality of the film as a piece of drama.

During a history-celebrating festival in the United Kingdom, Scottish actor Brian Cox lost his temper and attacked actors, theater critics, and politicians. Napoleon (2023), helmed by Ridley Scott, was the first flick he targeted. The yearly gathering discusses historical events with academics, educators, and prominent people.
Cox first took issue with Joaquin Phoenix’s depiction of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in Scott’s $221 million historical epic. The actor, who played Logan Roy on Succession for four seasons between 2018 and 2023, spoke candidly about his thoughts on Phoenix’s performance at HistFest, calling it “terrible”. Reacting quickly to Cox’s remarks, fans questioned why a great actor would ‘hate’ another great actor.

Brian Cox is giving his take on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and pondering on leaving the U.S. if Donald Trump wins the presidential election.

He laughs like Arthur Fleck—shrill, screechy, and even eerie to some extent. And there are a lot of those laughs, as he does that in between almost every joke. Other than that, though, British-Irish comedian Jimmy Carr has no similarities with the character that got Joaquin Phoenix his Oscar trophy. And despite Google confirming Carr’s Irish heritage, his accent is extremely British. So is his suave, suit-and-tie appearance on the stage. We’re talking about Carr’s latest standup special on Netflix, titled Natural Born Killer, where the comedian jokes about anything and everything and doesn’t adhere to any kind of restriction. In fact, Carr makes it very clear in the beginning that his comedy special is going to be filled with inappropriate jokes. By inappropriate, he means the kind of comedy that can get him canceled. Like it or not, we’re living in a day...

It looks as though director Todd Phillips has officially finished Joker: Folie a Deux, with the MPAA officially granting it an R-rating for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.” On the latter, it looks like Joker is about to show us the full monty, doesn’t it? At any rate, the R-rating isn’t a surprise, as that’s what the first film got, and I imagine a PG-13 sequel would have landed with a thud, as fans expect this to be as hardcore and uncompromising as the original.

Then there’s Stone Mattress, a project featuring Julianne Moore,...
