No Adaptation of Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' for J.J. Abrams

3 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

A frequently commented article around the site is a post I wrote back in September 2008 when the idea of a seven film adaptation of Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series was floated. The total comments on the article have reached 180 and some of them are long, long, long as it is obvious there is a massive interest in this series. At the time I wrote that article I was just starting the seventh and final book and have obviously completed the whole series since then still believe there is no chance we ever see a live-action seven film series and it seems the current dream of it happening has been shot down.

Speaking with MTV, Abrams said, "The 'Dark Tower' thing is tricky. It's such an important piece of writing. The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now."

As MTV's Eric Ditzian points out, »

Cinematical Seven: "Wtf?" Dance Scenes in Non-Musicals

5 November 2009 7:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I think it's safe to tell you, without spoiling the movie, that The Men Who Stare at Goats includes a couple of scenes with Jeff Bridges and George Clooney dancing around. The scenes are amusing and a little strange -- why are soldiers dancing? But they did fit consistently with the film as a whole. However, I was reminded of moments in movies that aren't musicals, but suddenly shift to some crazy kind of dance or musical number. I love these moments, and in fact I wish the dance scenes in The Men Who Stare at Goats were a little less toned-down and a little more "Wtf?"

Okay, I'm kind of Bs'ing you here. The Men Who Stare at Goats is a flimsy excuse. I really just wanted to write about surreal dance numbers in otherwise straightforward movies, because that can be so much fun. Last year's Adam Sandler vehicle »

Latest Trailer for ‘The Road’

3 November 2009 11:30 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Once again we visit the post-apocalyptic wasteland of director John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer-winning best-seller The Road — in the form of a new trailer courtesy of Dimension Films. Previously, we brought you the first trailer for this movie, which showed more of an overview of what happened and sets up the journey a bit.

This one features more of the relationship between the father (Viggo Mortensen) and the son (Kodi Smitt McPhee) and delves a bit more into the perilous journey they are on after civilization is virtually wiped out. If you’re not familiar with the novel of the movie, this trailer should help you realize what kind of movie this is and, more importantly, why you should consider seeing it — regardless of its potentially disturbing and “downer” themes.

Be sure to check back as the film gets closer to release for a full review of The Road. »

More Awesome and Depressing Images from The Road

3 November 2009 9:18 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s not easy trying to keep your kid alive, what with all the cannibals running around licking their lips. For one, kids being kids, they don’t always listen to you, and let’s face it, haven’t we all entertained the idea of selling our kids for a nice meal at least once? Or not. Here are some new images from John Hillcoat’s depress-a-ton, aka his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”. Sure it’s depressing as shit and you’ll probably want to slit your wrist after seeing it, but man, does it all look visually awesome or what? Based on the novel of the same name by award-winning writer Cormac McCarthy, “The Road” follows an unamed father (Viggo Mortensen) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as they try to make their way through a post-apocalyptic America, encountering tragedy and cannibals along the way. 20 New Looks at 'The Road' In All Its Hopeless Glory

3 November 2009 5:11 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I feel like I have already reviewed The Road after my brief comments in my post featuring the second trailer and the comments afterwards.

Now that I have added 20 more images I would say anyone that has already read the book can pretty much piece together the entire film using what you already know and the images and you are pretty much squared away. However, these images are going to be something fun to look at if your number one concern is making sure the film is a faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's wonderful book.

I have added my favorite image from the lot directly below, just click here to be whisked away to the gallery which is now up to 39 images.

Is ‘The Mortal Instruments’ The Next ‘Twilight’?

3 November 2009 3:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ever since Twilight made author Stephanie Meyer a millionaire, it seems as if the publishing industry has caught teen angst/fantasy/horror fever. Naturally, the fever spread to Hollywood where new movies about teenage werewolves, vampires, and various other classic movie monsters are appearing at an alarming rate. According to Variety, the most recent fantasy franchise to make the jump to the big screen will be Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series.

For those unfamiliar with The Mortal Instruments, here’s a quick blurb from the Variety article: “Story revolves around teenager Clary Fray’s search for her missing mother, which leads her to a city filled with mysterious fairies, raucous warlocks, vampires and other demons.” Collectively, The Mortal Instruments series of books have spent 28 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List.

New Trailer For Viggo Mortenson Apocalyptic Tale The Road

30 October 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

I have always had a thing for apocalyptic films. Heck I even like the uber crappy Postman and Waterworld. Alot! So needless to say I am very excited for the upcoming film The Road. Below you can checkout the brand new trailer. Although not as good as the first trailer it does look like alot of fun.

The Road revolves around a nameless man who is trying to get his son to safety after a nuclear fallout. Unfortunately the road to keeping his son safe turns into a nightmare as it is dangerously filled with survivors who have turned into mutated cannibal armies.  It stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, and Guy Pearce.

New 'The Road' Trailer Reels In the Bleak

30 October 2009 7:38 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Dimension Films has presented another look at the November-released "The Road" in the form of a new trailer. Debuted via Yahoo! Movies, the two-minute plus sneak peek offers a more depressing tone of the movie. A narration is provided by leading man Viggo Mortensen, while glimpses of him and his on-screen son, Kodi Smit-McPhee, struggling to survive flash.

This post-apocalyptic movie is based on Cormac McCarthy's best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It follows an unnamed father and his young son as they make their way toward the coast for possible food, shelter and safety after an unspecified cataclysmic event. With scarce shelter and resources available to them, they have to avoid the lawless cannibalistic bands that stalk the road along the way.

Dubbed to be "the most important film of the year" by Esquire, "The Road" stars Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall in addition to Mortensen and Smit-McPhee. »

New “The Road” Trailer

30 October 2009 3:22 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

A new trailer for “The Road” directed by John Hillcoat from a script by Joe Penhall has hit the web.

Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee in “The Road

Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen, Academy Award winners Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and 12-year-old Kodi Smit McPhee star in the big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Road.”

This is a story of a man (Mortensen) and his son (Smit-McPhee) walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a »

Second Trailer for ‘The Road’ Released

30 October 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The second trailer has been released for Viggo Mortensen’s latest movie, The Road. Jon was lucky enough to see this movie at the London Film Festival and as soon as it finished text me to say it’s the movie of the year. You can read his review here. The Road is based on the book by Cormack McCarthy, is directed by John Hillcoat and also stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Molly Parker, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall.

Here’s the synopsis in a nutshell:

An epic post-apocalyptic tale of the survival of a father and his young son as they journey across a barren America that was destroyed by a mysterious cataclysm. It imagines a future in which men are pushed to the worst and the best that they are capable of — a future in which a father and his son are sustained by love.

New Trailer For The Road Keeps Carrying The Fire

30 October 2009 2:03 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Don.t let the relatively unknown director, John Hillcoat (The Proposition), and writer, Joe Penhall (Blue/Orange), scare you away. The Road is shaping up to be nothing less than a thoughtful and invigorating ride. With a solid 88% .Fresh. rating over at Rotten Tomatoes, this film isn.t poised for much disappointment. Adapting Cormac McCarthy.s Pullitzer Prize winning 2006 novel of the same name, the film pits two nameless protagonists, Man (Viggo Mortensen) and Son (Kodi Smit-McPhee), in a dreary, Terminator Salvation-like visually gritty post-apocalyptic landscape. Receiving support from Charlize Therone, Robert Duvall, and Guy Pearce, the cast certainly rounds itself out quite nicely. Wait a minute.let.s rewind: Did I just liken Cormac McCarthy.s The Road to McG.s Terminator Salvation? I am so sorry. Please forgive me. And, while we.re asking for forgiveness, please also forgive the trailer.s utterly ridiculous score that kicks »

Second Trailer for 'The Road' Proves There's No Honest Way to Market It

30 October 2009 1:35 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Viggo Mortensen in The Road

Photo: Dimension Films The first trailer for The Road was a terrible mis-characterization and now Yahoo has debuted a second trailer and while it briefly touches upon the bleak and helpless nature of the film (primarily via Viggo's strained voice over) the musical choices and cutting of the footage (particularly in the second half) are far more uplifting and hopeful than the film ever is.

I loved the book and recommend everyone read it, but if you are looking forward to this film and have not yet read it, I highly suggest you hold off because the images on the screen can't hold up to the words on the page even if this is about as faithful an adaptation as you could get. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly went wrong with John Hillcoat's adaptation of The Road, but there is »

New Road trailer

As the days go by, we get closer and closer to seeing The Road. A new trailer debuted today, and we get some Guy Pearce! It's not a lot but it's better than snubbing him out. Pearce was one of my main reasons for wanting to see this. I also get the feeling that Robert Duvall is going to be amazing, not that he would ever be anything less. When I watch this however, I regret ever reporting that Viggo Mortensen might retire from film. Luckily that's not true and we will get more Viggo in... »

Kidman And Jackman Snubbed At AFI Awards

29 October 2009 5:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia has been nominated for six Australian Film Institute awards - but stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have been passed over for the country's most prestigious ceremony.

The $130 million (£81 million) blockbuster, the most expensive film ever made Down Under, was expected to lead the pack at the upcoming awards show, but missed out on nominations in the main categories - including the coveted AFI Best Film prize.

Both Kidman and Jackman were also noticeably absent from the best actor/actress lists.

Luhrmann's romance was nominated for the New Member's Choice Award, Best Sound, Original Music Score, Production Design, Costume Design and Best Supporting Actor for young star Brandon Walters.

Australia was outdone by director Robert Connolly's Balibo, which earned 14 nominations, and Samson and Delilah, which scooped 13.

Both will compete in the Best Film category against Beautiful Kate, Blessed, Mao's Last Dancer and Mary and Max.

Russell Crowe is in the running for the AFI International Award for Best Actor for his role in State of Play, alongside Martin Henderson of TV hit House, Anthony Lapaglia from Without A Trace and Guy Pearce for Bedtime Stories. »
