DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

A Very Cunning Plan, Indeed

1 November 2009 11:08 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Warning: There be many spoilers and strong opinions ahead.

As I wrote in yesterday's mini-blog, we watched two films last night. I watched Scream Blacula Scream on my own as Jon was napping. Each film was a treat for vastly different reasons. The first was The Naked Monster, a loving send up of B monster films from the 50s and 60s. It makes very clever use of existing footage and casting of actors from those films (The Thing from Another World, War of the Worlds, and This Island Earth for example). In many cases, these were the last roles for those iconic actors. They all seemed to be having a great time, so we had a great time watching them. There were even a couple of bits with the wonderful Forrest J. Ackerman whom I had the pleasure of meeting more than once. We've toured his amazing home and had »

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan Movie Review

29 October 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

If you're a Battlestar Galactica fans still mourning the loss of the groundbreaking sci-fi series, and you just can't hold out until Caprica arrives on Syfy, then by all means run out now and buy Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the new direct-to-dvd out now from Universal Home Entertainment. The film, directed by Edward James Olmos, features much of the show's cast and sheds some light on dangling threads from the late, great series, specifically the opening comments about the Cylons and their ominous plan. What was the plan? Well, it was to infiltrate humanity, in the process wiping out mankind on Caprica and aboard Galactica. The action shifts back and forth in time and place, with John Cavil (Dean Stockwell) -- a/k/a Brother John, a/k/a Cylon model Number One -- the central figure. Cavil hates every last human and sets in motion the events that ultimately »

Last week, the Csg gang spoke with Tim Gunn about super-hero fashion and then attended the DC Comics/Bloomingdale's fashion show in NYC where they asked Batman and Catwoman how fashion techniques have influenced their costumes.

And if that isn't enough for you, all previous episodes of Crazy Sexy Geeks: The Series have been remastered with better audio quality! Enjoy!

On The Fence About ‘BSG: The Plan’? Maybe These Clips Will Help

28 October 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As you probably know, the new Battlestar Galactica: The Plan movie dropped on DVD yesterday. Its a pretty good bit of entertainment (with just a couple issues) but all in all, its worth your time and money. Plus, according to Edward James Olmos, if this movie does well, we may end up with some more movies based on this franchise — which is a good thing.

So, to help those of you still on the fence about purchasing the movie on DVD or Blu-ray, we’re bringing you a lot of clips and other bits from it to hopefully help you make the right decision. These clips show a whole bunch of action from the movie itself as well as some interviews and behind the scenes info as well.

There’s quite a few of them so sit back, relax and take a few minutes to expolore the world of BSG: The Plan. »

Exclusive Interview: Dean Stockwell (Battlestar Galactica: The Plan)

27 October 2009 10:54 PM, PDT | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. Critics Weigh In On 'Battlestar Galactica: The Plan'

27 October 2009 3:46 PM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

There are still a lot of "Battlestar Galactica" fans out there, especially in critics circles, but not everyone was a fan of the latest DVD that was released Tuesday: "The Plan." The telemovie was written by "Caprica" showrunner Jane Espenson and directed by "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos, and provides backstory of the Cylon attack that started the critically acclaimed Syfy series through the eyes of the Cylons themselves. It starred Dean Stockwell from "Quantum Leap" fame as well as Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Aaron Douglas and Michael Trucco. Here is a sampling of just some of the reviews for the DVD, which is available now through Universal Home Entertainment. "This 'Plan' seems built from all mortar and no bricks, despite a rich premise: revisiting the 'Galactica' ... »

Review: ‘Battlestar Galactica: The Plan’

27 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Before I begin this review I have to disclose that I’m a huge fan of Ron Moore and David Eick’s re-imagined Battlestar Galactica tv series. From the first moments I saw it I was hooked and I followed the show religiously through its entire run. To this day I regard it as one of the finest shows ever to grace the small screen. In fact, I liked it so much I even got the entire series on Blu-ray. Yes, I’m the one.

So, when it came time to watch and review the latest Battlestar Galactica movie The Plan, I went into it with high expectations but was wondering how they were going to pull off this movie and tell this very well-known story from a completely different perspective: that of the Cylons. Much to my happiness, when I did watch The Plan, I was impressed with the »

'Stargate' Gets Its Due, 'Battlestar Galactica' Finds A Plan And More, In The DVD Report For October 27

27 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.

"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept, »

Exclusive: Edward James Olmos on the Future of Battlestar Galactica - More Could Be on the Way!

26 October 2009 1:26 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” hitting DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, Captain Adama himself Edward James Olmos (who also directed the film) did a bunch of interviews earlier today. Thankfully, I was offered a spot and just an hour ago I was sitting in a room in Studio City talking about “The Plan”. While we talked about how he got involved and the normal stuff, I did find out some major info if you’re a fan of the series. It seems that if “The Plan” sells 5 million copies, Olmos was told we’d get more straight to DVD “Battlestar Galactica” movies!

But it gets better.

Not only could we be getting more “Battlestar” movies but Olmos told me what some of them could be about! According to Olmos, some of the future movies could be about where the final five Cylons came from and how were they created; what really »

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan Blu-ray Review

26 October 2009 11:54 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, directed by William Adama himself Edward James Olmos, offers fans of the series one last chance to say goodbye and the show's creative team a first (and last?) opportunity to tie together several dangling loose ends. It is mandatory viewing as part of the show's legacy and arc but not the best the show has to offer. Newcomers to Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica universe should stay far, far away until after viewing the complete series.

The Plan speaks directly to the introduction text "and they have a plan" in reference to the first season of Battlestar Galatica. As it turns out the actual "plan" is quite simple: the complete extermination of all humans on the colonies via a carefully orchestrated nuclear attack which is shown more fully with the destruction of multiple colonies than in the miniseries. The "plan" failed with the survival of a »

Saboteurs and Lovers: An Advance Review of "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan"

26 October 2009 8:33 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

There are many copies. And they have a plan. I feel a bit conflicted about Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the nearly two-hour-long direct-to-dvd movie that's set roughly around the first two seasons of Syfy's groundbreaking drama series Battlestar Galatica. On the one hand, I was excited to return to the dystopian world of human survivors and Cylon skinjobs, ahead of Syfy's planned prequel series Caprica (which launches in January), but on the other I can't help asking myself if this was a story that cried out to be told. Battlestar Galatica: The Plan, written by Jane Espenson and directed by Edward James Olmos, doesn't really tred any new territory, per se. What it does offer is a different perspective on the events of the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica, from the Pov of the Cylon attackers. It's through their eyes--both the Cylon skinjobs and the mythical Final Five--that we »

Exclusive Interview: Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica: The Plan)

23 October 2009 11:33 PM, PDT | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Michael Hogan thinks that by the final frame of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, viewers will be halfway out the door, on the way to the store to buy DVDs of the recently concluded, award-winning Sci Fi series. "It's going to get every big Battlestar Galactica fan going back to the miniseries and watching all of the DVDs through the end of season four because a lot of things happen in The Plan that make you go, 'Oh, that's who she's talking to,' or, 'Oh, that's what that's about,'" Hogan said in an exclusive interview. "So you have to go back and watch the episodes. But there's only so much I can tell you because it's from the Cylons' point of view." Hogan, of course, reprises his role as Col. Tigh in The Plan, which will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 27 via Universal Studios Home Entertainment. »
