As I wrote in yesterday's mini-blog, we watched two films last night. I watched Scream Blacula Scream on my own as Jon was napping. Each film was a treat for vastly different reasons. The first was The Naked Monster, a loving send up of B monster films from the 50s and 60s. It makes very clever use of existing footage and casting of actors from those films (The Thing from Another World, War of the Worlds, and This Island Earth for example). In many cases, these were the last roles for those iconic actors. They all seemed to be having a great time, so we had a great time watching them. If you're a Battlestar Galactica fans still mourning the loss of the groundbreaking sci-fi series, and you just can't hold out until Caprica arrives on Syfy, then by all means run out now and buy Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the new direct-to-dvd out now from Universal Home Entertainment. The film, directed by Edward James Olmos, features much of the show's cast and sheds some light on dangling threads from the late, great series, specifically the opening comments about the Cylons and their ominous plan. As you probably know, the new Battlestar Galactica: The Plan movie dropped on DVD yesterday. Its a pretty good bit of entertainment (with just a couple issues) but all in all, its worth your time and money. Plus, according to Edward James Olmos, if this movie does well, we may end up with some more movies based on this franchise — which is a good thing.

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. There are still a lot of "Battlestar Galactica" fans out there, especially in critics circles, but not everyone was a fan of the latest DVD that was released Tuesday: "The Plan." The telemovie was written by "Caprica" showrunner Jane Espenson and directed by "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos, and provides backstory of the Cylon attack that started the critically acclaimed Syfy series through the eyes of the Cylons themselves. It starred Dean Stockwell from "Quantum Leap" fame as well as Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Aaron Douglas and Michael Trucco. Before I begin this review I have to disclose that I’m a huge fan of Ron Moore and David Eick’s re-imagined Battlestar Galactica tv series. From the first moments I saw it I was hooked and I followed the show religiously through its entire run. To this day I regard it as one of the finest shows ever to grace the small screen. In fact, I liked it so much I even got the entire series on Blu-ray. Yes, I’m the one.

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. With “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” hitting DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, Captain Adama himself Edward James Olmos (who also directed the film) did a bunch of interviews earlier today. Thankfully, I was offered a spot and just an hour ago I was sitting in a room in Studio City talking about “The Plan”. While we talked about how he got involved and the normal stuff, I did find out some major info if you’re a fan of the series. It seems that if “The Plan” sells 5 million copies, Olmos was told we’d get more straight to DVD “Battlestar Galactica” movies!
But it gets better.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, directed by William Adama himself Edward James Olmos, offers fans of the series one last chance to say goodbye and the show's creative team a first (and last?) opportunity to tie together several dangling loose ends. It is mandatory viewing as part of the show's legacy and arc but not the best the show has to offer. Newcomers to Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica universe should stay far, far away until after viewing the complete series.

There are many copies. And they have a plan. I feel a bit conflicted about Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, the nearly two-hour-long direct-to-dvd movie that's set roughly around the first two seasons of Syfy's groundbreaking drama series Battlestar Galatica. On the one hand, I was excited to return to the dystopian world of human survivors and Cylon skinjobs, ahead of Syfy's planned prequel series Caprica (which launches in January), but on the other I can't help asking myself if this was a story that cried out to be told. Battlestar Galatica: The Plan, written by Jane Espenson and directed by Edward James Olmos, doesn't really tred any new territory, per se. Michael Hogan thinks that by the final frame of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, viewers will be halfway out the door, on the way to the store to buy DVDs of the recently concluded, award-winning Sci Fi series. "It's going to get every big Battlestar Galactica fan going back to the miniseries and watching all of the DVDs through the end of season four because a lot of things happen in The Plan that make you go, 'Oh, that's who she's talking to,' or, 'Oh, that's what that's about,'" Hogan said in an exclusive interview. "So you have to go back and watch the episodes. But there's only so much I can tell you because it's from the Cylons' point of view." Hogan, of course, reprises his role as Col.
