There is, a critic will argue, a great deal of value in finding and discussing the worst films of the year. All the films released in a given epoch are a reflection of the trends and ideas that produced them, and scoring the bottom of the barrel for the worst filmmaking, the worst ideas, and the most misguided thinking will provide a valuable analysis of where we are as a society. Worst-of lists are important and vital and should be written with enthusiasm. They also let critics blow off steam a little bit; we don't have the luxury to skip bad movies or avoid talking about the ones we hate. It's our job.
The Golden Raspberries, or the Razzies for short, however, lost sight of that value a while back. The annual Razzies announcement is usually a snarky affair that only serves to pick on the year's least popular blockbusters,...

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

Steven Weisberg, a film editor whose career through the ’90s onward led him to collaborations with directors like Alfonso Cuarón, Barry Sonnenfeld and Barry Levinson, died Oct. 16 at the Motion Picture & Television Fund hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif. after several years of care for early onset Alzheimer’s. He was 68.
Weisberg’s death was confirmed by his ex-wife, Susan Ellicott.
Two of Cuarón’s early films, “Great Expectations” and “A Little Princess,” were edited by Weisberg. The two reunited for a foray into franchise filmmaking, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
Weisberg also had a knack for editing studio comedies, with his first major feature credit being Ben Stiller’s directorial debut, the 1996 thriller “The Cable Guy.” Other notable credits include a string of Barry Sonnenfeld projects — the short-lived 2001 live-action series “The Tick” and his features “Big Trouble” and “Men in Black II” — as well as “Permanent Midnight,...

His horrible mistake with The Wicker Man aside, Neil Labute has a history of making interesting films about uglier aspects of gender relations. He was exploring toxic masculinity long before it became fashionable, and he’s back on that topic here. Though it’s far from his most nuanced work, this home invasion horror tale has a few interesting things to say about expressions of masculinity and femininity within groups of women.
The occasion on which we meet these women is a hen party being held for Rose (Highdee Kuan) at a remote property which was owned by her parents and is now used for holiday rentals. The first people we meet are her older sisters: Tess (Maggie Q), a veteran of combat in Fallujah who has struggled to adjust to civilian life, and Beth (Kat Foster), a deeply conventional middle class woman who is continually embarrassed by this. They are joined.

The director of In the Company of Men continues his run of terrible films with this awfully acted, ungripping drama
In the most dismaying possible way, Neil Labute has done it again. The dramatist and film-maker who gave us the 90s toxic masculinity classic In the Company of Men and the interesting and undervalued Samuel L Jackson thriller Lakeview Terrace in 2008, seems now to be going through a period of churning out exploitation content like a hack-for-hire. Last year we had the dismal revenge horror House of Darkness; now it’s this terrible home invasion thriller, with awful acting, clunking dialogue cues and drearily ungripping action and suspense sequences, along with a ChatGPT-ish title.

A bachelorette party at a remote desert house is suddenly terrorized by home invaders.
That’s the plot of the new action thriller, Fear the Night, which stars Maggie Q as the sister of the bride and a hardened Iraq war veteran and skilled combatant. The women battle back against the invaders while searching for their father’s trove of guns.
Given the premise, you’d expect a classic shoot-’em-up to ensue. You’d be wrong.
Q wanted to do the film to work with writer-director Neil Labute. She’s a seasoned action star who previously went from Hong Kong martial arts films to appearing in Mission: Impossible III and Live Free or Die Hard.
But she had one request – no guns.

Return To Dust, an arthouse hit in China last summer before being pulled from release, opens Stateside this weekend with Film Movement presenting on two screens – NYC’s Bam Rose Cinema and the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, expanding to LA and Seattle next Friday.
The distributor acquired the film directed by Li Ruijun after it premiered in Berlin in March, 2022 to glowing reviews, see Deadlines’s here. Hai Quing and Wu Renlin star as a middle-aged couple in a rural province encouraged to marry by their families, who see them as a burden. Love and respect slowly as they scratch out a living of extreme hardship working the land. A 95% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
First released last July in China, it played unusually well for an arthouse title there and appeared on streaming platforms in early September before disappearing later that month without explanation.

Maggie Q burst onto the scene with 2006’s Mission Impossible III and quickly established herself as an action star. Over the years she’s dipped her toes into various franchises but has mostly found herself in smaller fare. Fear the Night (Check out Cody Hamman’s review Here) is proof of how that can be a positive as Maggie is captivating in every frame of the film as she’s allowed to do a little more than just stuntwork. So I was extremely excited to be able to discuss the film with Maggie and see just how much she collaborated with writer/director Neil Labute in creating the character of Tes. While Fear the Night is a bit on the generic side, Maggie’s performance elevates it and makes it worth a watch. Check out my wonderful conversation with the actress above.

Fear the Night opens with a confrontation, though not the kind you might expect from a home invasion thriller. Tes is going through a trunk full of scrapbooks in the attic when her sister Beth appears and snaps at her for going through her stuff. Tes points out these are family heirlooms, not hers only for the subject to be changed to Tes swearing in front of Beth’s daughter despite the fact the girl isn’t even in the house at the moment.
These dysfunctional siblings have been brought together by a bachelorette party although it’s not exactly clear why. It’s obvious that Tes, who is suffering from Ptsd and struggling to readjust to society, likes these people about as much as they like her. After the obligatory run-in with...

Plot: A bachelorette party being held in an isolated farmhouse is crashed by a group of homicidal home invaders.
Review: In some circles, writer/director Neil Labute tanked his reputation by making the goofball 2006 remake of The Wicker Man – which is a shame, because when he first arrived on the scene he was a best known for making emotionally devastating dramas and dark comedies like In the Company of Men and Your Friends & Neighbors. His latest film is the home invasion thriller Fear the Night… and while it’s not on the level of his well-regarded dramas and dark comedies, it also doesn’t fall to the depths of the Wicker Man remake. (Which star Nicolas Cage insists was always meant to be a comedy as well.) So it may be best to refer to this one as “From the director of Lakeview Terrace”. It’s not great, it’s not bad.

Director Robin Hardy’s 1973 folk horror film The Wicker Man (watch it Here) is considered to be a genre classic – and the folks at Studio Canal are certainly showing it a lot of love and respect with their upcoming 5-disc collector’s edition release, which will contain Blu-ray (which may be locked to Region B) and 4K Uhd (All Region) discs. The street date for this release is September 4th – and before that, Studio Canal will also be holding a “one night only” theatrical re-release event on June 21st.
In addition to the 5-disc collector’s edition, there will be a new digital release and a steelbook.
Inspired by David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual, The Wicker Man was directed by Hardy from a screenplay by Anthony Shaffer. The film has the following synopsis: When a young girl mysteriously disappears, Police Sergeant Howie travels to a remote Scottish island to investigate.

Legendary characters don’t die. They keep getting reinvented. If they exist in fiction, new authors come along to create new adventures for them. And if they exist onscreen, you can bet that a remake or reboot will come along every generation or so in hopes of recatching that lightning in a bottle.
And often both happens, as is the case with Philip Marlowe, the iconic hard-boiled detective invented by Raymond Chandler and portrayed onscreen over the decades by actors including Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Montgomery, James Garner, Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and probably others I’ve forgotten.
The latest tough guy actor to don the fedora is Liam Neeson, in director Neil Jordan’s new film based on a 2014 novel by John Banville, writing under the name Benjamin Black. Suffice it to say that the results won’t erase anyone’s memories of The Big Sleep or The Long Goodbye.

Showtime is thinning its roster of scripted originals in the wake of its consolidation with Paramount+.

As buzzwords like Accountability, Behavior and Integrity flash on the screen, a project manager in one of the coveted offices that line the walls is seen in full meltdown, destroying his monitors with a golf club and spewing a torrent of expletives until security escorts him out.

Amanda Seyfried missed the Golden Globes because she was involved in a workshop of musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise, a rep for the show confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.
The musical, which was in early stages of development in 2021, is being adapted for the stage, the rep said. Evan Rachel Wood is also said to be involved in the workshop. Her reps did not reply to a request for comment from THR as of press time.
Variety first reported news of Seyfried and Wood’s involvement in the project.
In June 2021, Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri told THR about the “very early stages” of development for the musical. Khouri said the musical had director Trip Cullman (who has directed Choir Boy, Lobby Hero and more on Broadway) attached, a score by indie singer-songwriter Neko Case and a script by Halley Feiffer, an actress and playwright who...

Kathleen Turner stars in boorish tale about a wealthy old woman whose family descend to get her money when she is dying
In 2007 and 2010 British writer-director Dean Craig gave us the farce Death at a Funeral, of which I must admit I was never a fan. But there is something in the relentless bad taste in his new all-star black comedy – something in the fanatical emphasis on the importance of the exposed penis in all its unimpressive smallness – that is actually weirdly effective.
Kathleen Turner plays Hilda, a cantankerous, disagreeable and extremely wealthy old lady who is dying of cancer, and finds that her greedy and unctuous nieces and nephews all show up, hoping for a slice of the will. These are Macey (Toni Collette), Savannah (Anna Faris), Richard (David Duchovny) and Beatrice (Rosemarie DeWitt), along with Beatrice’s bewildered husband James (Ron Livingston). To get into Aunt Hilda’s good books,...

Quiver Distribution has acquired the U.S. rights for Toronto-premiering drama “Blueback,” starring Mia Wasikowska, Radha Mitchell and Eric Bana.
Directed by Robert Connolly, “Blueback” world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this fall. Based on Tim Winton’s novel of the same name, the story follows novice diver Abby (Wasikowska), who befriends a magnificent wild blue groper, beginning her life-long journey to save the world’s coral reefs.
When the quiet reef at her coastal hometown starts to attract commercial fishing operators, it’s not long until she realizes that the fish she calls a friend is under threat. Taking inspiration from her activist mother, she takes on poachers and developers to save her friend.
The film’s screenplay is written by Connolly and Winton.
“We are thrilled to partner with an amazing filmmaker like Robert Connolly,” said Quiver Distribution co-president Berry Meyerowitz. “This mesmerizing film is one audiences will love.

Wicker Man returns! And don’t worry, Nicholas Cage, Neil Labute, and Anthony Shaffer are far away from the reboot. I think. Of course, horror fans can’t forget one of the worst horror films in the past two decades was the 2006 Wicker Man, that’s remembered for the terrible scenes and overacting by the Oscar winner. The 2006 version is actually a reboot of the well-respected 1973 film of the same name, which starred Edward Woodward as Sgt. Neil Howie. The feature is about an officer who travels to Summerisle island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. Soon, the

Back in 1973, director Robin Hardy and screenwriter Anthony Shaffer brought us the horror classic The Wicker Man (watch it Here), which was inspired by David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual. In the decades since, The Wicker Man has inspired the likes of Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz, received a “spiritual sequel” called The Wicker Tree, and had its good name sullied by the 2006 remake directed by Neil Labute and starring Nicolas Cage. Now it’s set to get the TV treatment. Deadline reports that a The Wicker Man TV series is in development at the Studiocanal-backed company Urban Myth Films and Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish’s company The Imaginarium.
Howard Overman, creator of the Epix series War of the Worlds, is writing The Wicker Man TV series and the production companies are currently pitching the project to potential broadcasters. Overman told Deadline that the series “will differ from the...

Labute’s quarter-baked script tries but fails to satirise male attitudes, letting down his actors Justin Long and Kate Bosworth
Writer-director Neil Labute has created some genuinely challenging work for cinema and theatre, including the 90s toxic-masculinity classic In the Company of Men. But he takes his eye off the ball sometimes, and in this film the ball is so far outside Labute’s eyeline, he might as well be outside the stadium trying to remember where he parked the car.
House of Darkness is a tedious quarter-baked straight-to-video revenge horror set-up that is sort of – but not really – satirising male attitudes. Justin Long plays Hap, a guy who has just picked up Mina (Kate Bosworth), a young woman in a bar, assuring her that he is “separated” from his wife. This demure, white-clad young siren asks Hap to drive her home, which turns out to be a weird Castle...

Neil Labute films tend to have similar characteristics. The gifted playwright has a way with words, so his scripts are smart and snappy. He also has an interest in the way that men and women interact and how caustic the battle of the sexes can be. His films are often filled with unlikeable characters engaging in abhorrent behaviors and he loves dark humor, which goes hand in hand with his proclivity for exploring controversial and upsetting subject matter.
Labute’s latest, House of Darkness, contains nearly all of these elements. Labute’s latest, House of Darkness, contains nearly all of these elements. The eyes can grow accustomed to the dark. Still, the central theme of House of Darkness will become visible to most viewers too soon. Maybe that’s because while director Neil Labute tries to infuse a sense of mystery into his first horror film since Nicolas Cage’ ill-fated remake of The Wicker Man (2006). He’s hampered by a script that makes it all too obvious what’s going on. He needn’t have bothered. Though the gothic atmosphere and coy dialogue are fun, they don’t really create any mystery for horror fans who can readily guess where this one night stand from hell is headed. The film opens as a car makes its late-night way towards a remote country estate, the lavish but rundown kind...

Plot: A man thinks his mysterious date will be another casual hook-up. While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Hoping to get lucky, his luck may have just run out.
Story: House of Darkness is a slowburn in every sense of the word. If you’re going into this expecting a lot to happen, then you may be disappointed. Writer and Director Neil Labute ramps up the tension as the story unfolds and trusts the audience to have some patience. But this story of a man trying to get laid, isn’t quite what you would expect it to be.
The opening credits, with red font, while a piano and strings play in the background felt like an Old Hammer Horror film. It really helps set up the gothic aesthetic right from the jump. In many ways, this is a modern story told through the lens of the past.

The modern dating scene can be murder. You meet someone at an event, a club, a bar ... you never know if you're seeing the real them. You likely aren't. What's lying underneath the surface of your boozed-up interlocutor? Are they kind? Better than you're seeing? Or more likely, are they worse? And for women meeting men, the latter's undoubtedly a frightening potential outcome. "House of Darkness" centers itself entirely around an ironic subversion of that fearful commonplace situation. Here, a man drives a woman home from a bar to her isolated mansion and finds himself beset by powerful women, the womanizer becoming the hunted late-night target.
While horror fans may better know writer-director-playwright Neil Labute for his ill-fated "The Wicker Man" remake, relationship games, power, and their consequences are frequent themes of his wider oeuvre. "House of Darkness" fits well within that vein, but here with a twist inspired by Dracula's long-fabled brides.

Imagine showing up for an Airbnb rental, only to discover that another guest is already there. What would you do? Check in anyway and hope for the best? Or take the mix-up as a sign and get the heck out? In “Barbarian,” Tess (Georgina Campbell) makes the wrong decision. It’s already late, and she decides to stay — this despite the fact that the stranger sharing the house is played by Bill Skarsgård (the actor who embodied Pennywise in the recent “It” remake). For audiences, this casting is a clue Tess is in for a scary stay. But it would be wrong to think you have “Barbarian” figured out.
For Tess, there are plenty of other red flags in the way her unexpected roommate behaves. Should she really believe they double-booked the same place in a derelict Detroit neighborhood? Or is there another reason he’s there? What if he...

This past Labor Day weekend looked like it could be one of the worst in recent memory. Thankfully, it was salvaged by National Cinema Day and the overwhelming success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This coming weekend, those recovering from the throes of awards love out of Venice and Telluride might be prepping for TIFF in Toronto, but everyone else will have a few new options in theaters, just nothing being released particularly wide.
First up, there’s Zach Cregger’s horror film “Barbarian” starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long. It’s a pretty crazy film that starts out as a simple high-concept surrounding two strangers stuck sharing the same Airbnb, which then turns into something quite different.

With summer (unofficially) over and the Halloween Season now in full swing, these weekly roundups are about to get very packed with fresh new horrors both at home and in theaters!
Eight brand new horror movies are releasing in this first full week of September, and trust me when I say even that makes for a quiet week compared to what’s coming soon.
Here’s all the new horror arriving September 6 – September 11, 2022!
First up, Dread’s Tiny Cinema was just unleashed On Demand yesterday, a horror anthology of multiversal madness that’s also coming to Blu-ray on October 11 of this year.
Sit back, relax, and get uncomfortable…
From the makers of Butt Boy, Tiny Cinema is said to be “a twisted tale of seemingly unconnected strangers whose lives will change in incredible and bizarre ways forever. As reality unravels, each person must battle incredible challenges from a multiverse seeking...
