Who wants to have a good old heart-breaking laugh in the middle of an economic recession?
You know Patrick Stewart, star of Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and that delightful one-man stage version of A Christmas Carol? Who doesn't? What geek doesn't wake up in the morning to "Tea, earl grey, hot" and think of the Great Bald One?
Well, you better switch to decaf, my good friend, before you read this news: At the upcoming Chiller Theatre convention, one of the larger horror/sci-fi/kitsch festivals on the East Coast, Mr. Patrick Stewart will be commanding $100 per "photo op". That doesn't appear to include an autograph with it. Oh, and and would you mind forking that over in advance, his handlers ask you kindly.
We've reported on this consistently over the years. There's a lot of talent on the convention circuit that make their living at these shows. »

[Spoiler Warning - This interview does contain discussion of the film's kills and plot. Be warned!]
There's a lot to like about Stewart Hendler's breezy and bloody Sorority Row. Sharp-eared viewers will notice the Sorority is located at Rosman College--named after writer/director Mark Rosman, who made the original House On Sorority Row. "Of course," smiles Hendler. "It's only right that we pay tribute to the guy who started it all!"
While it delivers the scares, Row is frequently laugh out loud funny and surreal. Case in point: The movie also has the jaw-dropping sight of Star Wars' Princess Leia, acclaimed actress/writer Carrie Fisher, chasing the killer with a double-barrelled shotgun!
Fango: Carrie Fisher is great as the alcoholic House Mother...How the hell did you get her to do it?
Stewart Hendler: "I lucked out, that's how I got Carrie Fisher. She was obviously the easy first choice for us...I mean, come on, »

On Thursday, September 3, Turner Classic Movies (North America) will present all four of the Magnificent Seven films back-to-back starting with the original 1960 classic. It took six years for the first sequel, Return of the Seven, with Yul Brynner still in the leading role. Brynner was replaced by George Kennedy in the 1969 sequel Guns of the Magnificent Seven and Lee Van Cleef took over the lead in the fourth and final entry, The Magnificent Seven Ride! which was released in 1972. All of the sequels are fairly anemic if compared to the original, but each is quite entertaining nonetheless. A primary asset for all the sequels: Elmer Bernstein's superb main theme was retained for each film. The action begins at 8:00 and runs through the wee small hours of Friday. »

For those of you that haven't heard, the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. We know this because the Mayan calendar ends on that date, and who are we to dispute the timetable skills of a long extinct culture. For those of you who are unsure of what to expect three years from now, Roland Emmerich has a movie opening this November depicting the apocalypse to come. Or you can wait another year for the Syfy Channel version Bryan Singer has in the works.
The X-Men 1 & 2 and Superman Returns director previously co-produced a "Bermuda Triangle" miniseries for the then Sci-Fi Channel, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter. Now he's producing a currently untitled bit of "doomsday porn" (as I call it) built around the whole Mayan calendar/2012 Armageddon scenario. Michael Petroni, who was part of the creative team behind ABC's short-lived supernatural series "Miracles", has signed on »

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Original Belgian release poster One of our favorite westerns of the 1960s is Henry Hathaway's The Sons of Katie Elder starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Michael Anderson Jr and Earl Holliman as four estranged brothers reunited for their beloved mother's funeral. They soon learn that there was a scandal attached to her death and their efforts to uncover the mystery puts their lives in danger. A great supporting cast includes Dennis Hopper, George Kennedy, Paul Fix, Martha Hyer, Jeremy Slate and James Gregory. The film is so entertaining that you forget the absurdity of Wayne (who was in his fifties at the time) being cast as Michael Anderson Jr.'s brother! (Anderson was 22 when he shot the film). In addition to Hathaway's expert direction, the movie is enhanced tremendously by Elmer Bernstein's rousing score. Click here to view the trailer. Click here to order The Sons of Katie Elder »

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – With the $130 million gross and counting for “Gran Torino,” Clint Eastwood has proven that his star power has not diminished in the slightest even with 50 years in show business under his belt. There’s an entire generation new to Clint who have an amazing catalog to explore and they can start with four of his most unforgettable roles, now available in the “Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection”.
Universal probably thought their excellent “American Icon Collection” would be perfectly timed to take full advantage of at least one, maybe two more Oscar nominations for Clint Eastwood. With his direction of “Changeling” and critically acclaimed lead performance in “Gran Torino,” Eastwood seemed a slam dunk to be a part of Oscar night 2009, as he has so many times in recent years.
Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection is released by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment on February 10th, 2009.
