Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.
The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)
11.40am, 8pm, Sky Movies Family
What with Harry Potter, Narnia, Lemony Snicket and all, »

By the time David Hyde Pierce and Michael Feinstein sang Cole Porter's "You're the Top" last night at Feinstein's at Loews Regency, I'd been smiling for so long that my cheeks ached. Their retro holiday nightclub act, which plays until December 30, invoked male performers of another era whose duets (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in White Christmas, or Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire in The Ziegfeld Follies) were always gay in the lively and bright sense. Although, gay in the other sense admirably captures the spirit of the evening, as well. From Feinstein's jazzy rendition of "So in Love" from Kiss Me Kate to Hyde Pierce's "You Won't Succeed on Broadway (If You Don't Have Any Jews)" from Spamalot, I loved every moment, grinning goonily at the duo for over an hour. After their introductory medley, the two unfortunately alternated »

On December 10, the Unicef Ball brought together Hollywood’s biggest stars for a fundraising gala to honor those individuals who have made key contributions to Unicef’s mission to save and improve children’s lives worldwide. The evening raised more money for the organization than any Unicef Ball to date.
Producer and long-time philanthropist Jerry Weintraub was honored as Man of the Year with Unicef’s Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award. The special black-tie evening took place at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, in Beverly Hills, CA.

The lovely Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally faced off against former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.
Jolie and Pitt, who reportedly donated $6.8 million to charities last year, stood in line at a Unicef charity ball in Los Angeles to meet the 67-year-old Ali.
A party-goer at the event said that Jolie planted a smooch on the cheek of The Champ during their quick meet and great. “Ali was loving all the attention and seemed taken by Angelina too,” he said.
Also in attendance were George Clooney, Matt Damon, Joan Collins and recent self-described “Milf” Cindy Crawford.
Producer Jerry Weintraub won the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award at the party. The award is given to those who make key contributions to Unicef’s mission to improve children’s lives.
Angelina Jolie, now 34-years-old, has long been an advocate of U.N. programs to help those in need and is an active Unhcr Goodwill Ambassador. »

George Clooney took girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis on a classic Hollywood date Thursday night, complete with the industry's biggest movie stars and moguls - and the Italian beauty fit right in. A tuxedoed Clooney, 48, kept Canalis, 31, close at the 2009 Unicef Ball at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, where the pair shared a table with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, his wife Luciana Barroso, Bruce Willis and his wife Emma Heming, Larry David and producer Jerry Weintraub, who was being honored with Unicef's Humanitarian Award. (AP Article, Scroll down for HuffPost slideshow) Beverly Hills, California -- The A-list dinner party drew top performers and singing legends. George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bruce Willis, Larry David, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie gathered around Jerry Weintraub's table at the posh Unicef Ball in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel ballroom Thursday night to honor the legendary producer's philanthropic work. Clooney presented Weintraub with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award, named after the late singer-actor. "When it comes to charities, nobody guilts better," Clooney joked about Weintraub to the crowd. Weintraub's wife, singer Jane Morgan, serenaded her husband with the tunes "Ten Cents a Dance" and "Big Spender" as hundreds of attendees noshed dessert: chocolate lava cakes and waffle cone sundaes. Other performers at the benefit included Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli and Paul Anka, who rewrote the lyrics to Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in Weintraub's honor. Born in »

Why celebrity-seeking not-for-profits should find a friend like David Arquette.
Charities and causes have used celebrity spokespeople since the Un enlisted Danny Kaye in 1954 to educate the public about the plight of poor children abroad. Now every not-for-profit wants a Desperate Housewife to come to its gala -- some settle for a Real Housewife -- and every celeb wants a photo with a sick child to run in People. Dozens of stars have posed naked for PETA's antifur ads. Irritable bowel syndrome even landed a wondrous spokeswoman; I'll never look at Lynda Carter the same way again.
You know the best of these big-hearted boldface names: Angelina, Bono, Elton, and David ... Arquette. Yes, David Arquette. If I were making a Celebs Gone Good list, he'd top it.
The typical celeb do-gooder needs car service, script approval, bottled water from Iceland's glacial highlands, and artisanal acai candy hand-wrapped by Bolivian orphans. »

Jake Gyllenhaal's writer mother Naomi Foner is campaigning for her son to become the new Danny Kaye.
Mother and son used to watch Kaye's movies when he was a child and Foner is always trying to convince the actor to revamp the iconic funnyman's most famous roles.
He says, "(We'd watch) Five Pennies, The Court Jester and Hans Christian Anderson... My mother was a big Danny Kaye fan and would always play me these movies. She is, in fact, the person who always calls me up and is like, 'You should redo The Court Jester!'" »

Last night, the sheer amount of dancing that was packed into more than two hours is making my head swim at the prospect of recapping it all. Out of the 20 partner numbers and 10 solos, I'm sure there are plenty of dances that were great, but I'm arbitrarily narrowing it down to the ones that stuck in my head (for better or worse). If your memory differs, share your own recap in the comments below!

Ellenore and Jakob: I wonder how the others reacted when they saw that these two were paired up this week? Not even the evil quickstep could take them down. Nigel was forced to make up something about Jakob's elbow in order to pretend they weren't perfect. And when they did Sonja's routine, their movement was so musical and expressive and effortless, I kind of feel like "dancing" isn't an adequate word for it. »

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?
Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc
1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer
1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil
1926 Richard Crenna, character actor
1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"
1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts
1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.

Movie Reviews By Captain D
After the silly but fun Independence Day and bloated climate warning epic wannabe The Day After Tomorrow, Robert Emerich is back trying to destroy the planet again. In 2012, he chooses, rather than spaced out aliens or freaky weather conditions, the effect of a gigantic solar flare on the earth's core.

Every Sunday, Film School Rejects presents a film that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies presents: White Christmas (1954) While walking through a major store the other day, I noticed that all of their Christmas gear had already been broken out, and I felt that that sent a central message to shoppers that Thanksgiving is easily overlooked. The hell with Thanksgiving. Bring on Christmas. I've decided to join in the exclusionary spirit, completely bypassing Thanksgiving (as if my entries seem themed in the first place), and go straight to the source of holiday cheer that is the only holiday that can leave the streets and highways of Los Angeles empty. And what better way than to spotlight White Christmas? I recognize that for some modern audiences, this film will seem completely dated. It's one of those films that was birthed from the stage show, from »

The palatial M&C offices have an air of snow about them and it.s not even Thanksgiving yet. It may have to do with a visit from troubadours Der Bingle, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. It may be a White Christmas after all and I didn.t even know it was coming. Lord help the sister that comes between man and my man, that didn.t sound right. On Christmas Eve, 1944, Capt. Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) is entertaining his fellow troops with the help of Pvt. Phil Davis (Danny Kaye). Their beloved commander Maj. Gen. Thomas Waverly (Dean Jagger) arrives for the end of the show and to relinquish command. His men give his a rousing send off that is »

White Christmas, Paramount's belated follow-up to the 1942 hit Holiday Inn, was the studio's first VistaVision production. A veritable warehouse full of oldie-but-goodie Irving Berlin tunes are woven into the film's simplistic plotline, along with a handful of new songs, of which &"What Can You Do With a General?" is the least memorable. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye (replacing an ailing Donald O'Connor) play nightclub entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, while Rosemary Clooney and VeraEllen are cast as singing-sister act Betty and Judy. The foursome travel to Vermont to visit Bob and Phil's Wii commanding officer, General Waverly (Dean Jagger, »

I am trying to keep my expectations very low for Your Highness, the medieval comedy headed by Danny McBride and James Franco, but it's so hard, especially since they keep adding such promising cast members. Now The Hollywood Reporter says they have added another fair maiden to keep the testosterone levels down: Zooey Deschanel.
To refresh your memory, Highness centers on a lazy, arrogant prince (played by McBride, naturally) who must go on a knightly quest to save his father's kingdom. Joining him is his heroic brother, played by James Franco. (And he's so perfect for this with those Pre-Raphaelite looks of his.) Natalie Portman plays a warrior princess, who wins the heart of McBride, while Deschanel plays Belladonna, Franco's virginal bride. It's not clear if she goes along on the quest, but something tells me she's probably left behind in a tower, and abandoning her chastity belt.
