The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

19 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Rupert Friend on Renny Harlin’s Georgia

4 December 2009 6:05 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A theater-trained Brit, Rupert Friend wanted to be so many different things growing up that he decided to become an actor so that he could just play them all. During the press day for the soon to be released The Young Victoria, the actor talked about having just made the film Georgia, about the recent conflict between Georgia and Russia, and helmed by director Renny Harlin, where he plays an American war correspondent who gets captured and accused of being a spy.

Of working with Harlin, he says that he really enjoyed the experience because, instead of the filmmaker’s usual tendency to use CGI, they were instead surrounded by real Apache helicopters, tanks and the Georgian military.

Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: Do you have any idea what you’ll be doing next?

Rupert: I’m starting rehearsals for a play on Monday, »

Russia, Georgia Fund Dueling War Movies

More than a year after they stopped shooting at each other, Russia and Georgia are still fighting—on movie screens. Each side is backing high-profile films sympathetic to their take on the war. Russia’s first effort, a documentary entitled Act of Betrayal , fell flat because its claims that Georgia was committing genocide in South Ossetia were too over-the-top even for supporters. But March’s romantic action flick Olympus Inferno fared better, and a third is in the works. Georgia, meanwhile, is relying on a Hollywood effort helmed from Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin . Kevin Carr’s Weekly Report Card for 11.13.09

13 November 2009 7:50 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

2012 Studio: Columbia Pictures Rated: PG-13 for intense disaster sequences and some language. Starring: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover Directed by: Roland Emmerich What it’s about: The Mayans predicted it, and now Woody Harrelson is calling out for Armageddon. Some think the end of the world will come on December 21, 2012, and Roland Emmerich has now made a movie about it. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Chiwetel Ejiofor try to escape crumbling freeways, giant tsunamis and disastrous volcanoes. What I liked: There are certain directors that make utter crap, but I love none-the-less. Along with Brett Ratner, Paul W.S. Anderson and Renny Harlin, Roland Emmerich is one of these. Let’s face it, no one destroys the world like this guy, and he reminds us with 2012 that he is the master of disaster. Like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the reason to see 2012 is for the special effects. Emmerich »

Sin City 2” producer Stephen L'Heureux’s Solipsist Films has picked up the options for two more comic book adaptations: Joe Casey and Caleb Gerard’s “Full Moon Fever” and Glen Brunswick and John Romita Jr.’s “The Gray Area.”

According to Mania.com, Casey and Brunswick are both attached to adapt their respective titles.

Director Renny Harlin optioned “Full Moon Fever” a month before it was published, but the rights subsequently reverted to Casey.

"It's a lot like 'Alien' and 'Aliens'. It's fast-paced and really fun," said L'Heureux.

Brunswick and Romita Jr.’s “The Gray Area” was first published as a three-issue miniseries by Image Comics back in 2005. The series follows a »

Georgia Rule

Some directors bounce back from a roster of cinematic turkeys, but the combined effect of Cutthroat Island, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and Driven seem to have invoked a "three strikes and you're out" rule for Renny Harlin. The onetime top director has spent the last few years making films like The Covenant and the John Cena starrer 12 Rounds, and he's now set Val Kilmer and Emmanuelle Chriqui to star in Georgia, a war film about last year's military conflict between Russia and Georgia. Renny Harlin Takes Val Kilmer and Emmanuelle Chriqui to Georgia

28 October 2009 8:21 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We wrote a couple months ago about Renny Harlin's upcoming film about the 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia. Now, as then, I'm interested in the film to see if Harlin can take what made a few of his films really entertaining (I'm thinking of Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea and The Long Kiss Goodnight) and apply it to something that isn't so flashy. Can he come up with a film that's actually good? It's been a while. Today he's got some of the cast lined up for the picture, which we now know will be called simply Georgia. Val Kilmer and Entourage's Emmanuelle Chriqui are the leads in the film, says THR. Kilmer is a journalist covering the conflict; Chriqui is a Georgian grad student who becomes 'entangled' with Kilmer and his cameraman. We'd previously known that the film is about "an American journalist and his cameraman who arrive »

Chriqui and Kilmer Join War Film

28 October 2009 6:36 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Here’s a recipe for … well, I’m not sure what dish this will make, but it’ll certainly be interesting: Emmanuelle Chriqui, a recurring actor on Entourage, and Val Kilmer (Tombstone) have joined forces with director Renny Harlin for the leading roles in Georgia, Harlin’s new war film.

According to THR, the film centers around “an American journalist (Kilmer) and his cameraman caught in the crossfire of  covering last year’s military conflict between Russia and Georgia … [as well as] a Georgia native (Chriqui) and doctoral student who becomes entangled with them.”

While this certainly doesn’t represent Harlin’s average action fare, I’m not entirely convinced that the man has ever made a good film in his life. When the closest you come to a good film is the lackluster Die Hard 2 or the redeemably cheesy Deep Blue Sea, you know your track record is somewhat worse for the wear. »

Emmanuelle Chriqui Heads To Georgia

28 October 2009 12:06 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The dust may still be settling on Russia's conflict with Georgia, but Renny Harlin isn't messing about, with Georgia, his (anti)war movie set during the war, picking up another cast member in the shapely form of Emmanuelle Chriqui. Chriqui, best known as Eric's girlfriend Sloan in Entourage, will play a local woman who becomes entangled with an American journalist (Val Kilmer) and cameraman assigned to cover Georgia's 2008 assault on the Russian-backed Republic of South Ossetia. Andy Garcia will play Georgia president Mikheil Saakashvili. It's political sensitive terrain - the war left more than 100,000 homeless and left deep rifts between the two countries - so it will no doubt call on a different side to the Harlin oeuvre. As executive producer Michael Flannigan told Georgian television: "Our main concern was to show war as a bad thing. We had an opportunity to make a really anti-war film." In other words, »

News & Notes: Steve Carell, Slammin’ Salmon, Shattered Union

There is plenty of news and whatnots happening in the world of film this evening, so we thought we'd throw together a quick round of News & Notes, so that you can keep it all straight. We start, as we always do, with something mildly interesting. As per my newly fashioned format, the first few words of each item serve as the link to the source. Just give them a click to read more. Steve Carell is working on a new comedy for Warner Bros., entitled Missing Links. He will play a golfer who joins fellow municipal course schlubs to take a shot at the country club down the road. Very original. (THR) The Cup of Tears is a new sci-fi samurai flick that we picked up via our friends over at First Showing. It is more than a little badass, mixing the aesthetic of 300 with the badassery that Ninja Assassin could've only hoped to achieve. (First »

Emmanuelle Chriqui Joins Val Kilmer in Renny Harlin’s Georgia

27 October 2009 11:19 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Before we continue, Renny Harlin’s upcoming film “Georgia” is not about The Peach State and the tale how Coca-Cola will one day flow out of our drinking fountains.  “Georgia” is based on last year’s conflict between Russia and the country of Georgia.  THR reports that hottie/red-carpet eye candy Emmanuelle Chriqui will play opposite Val Kilmer in the drama about an American journalist (Kilmer) and his cameraman caught in the crossfire and a Georgia native (Chriqui) and doctoral student who becomes entangled with them.

Chriqui is best known for her role on “Entourage” playing the love interest of Kevin Connolly’s character, Eric.  Since “Entourage’ is a fantasy, I believe the most recent episode featured a tearful goodbye between them before Eric had to go and drop the The One Ring into Mount Doom.  Kilmer has appeared in numerous roles but he has a lifetime free pass from »

Emmanuelle Chriqui and Val Kilmer Head to Georgia for Renny Harlin

27 October 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It may be hard to believe now, but once upon a time Renny Harlin was an in-demand action movie director, having directed hits like “Die Hard 2″, “Cliffhanger”, and “The Long Kiss Goodnight”. More recently, not so much. Harlin hasn’t exactly had the best of resumes in the last few years, with junk like “The Covenant” and “12 Rounds” to his credit. He’s looking to rise from direct-to-dvd hell (and bad movies starring wrestlers) with the kinda-current themed “Georgia”, a war drama that will be set in the country of Georgia and star Val Kilmer as a journalist covering the recent Russia-Georgia conflict. “Entourage” star Emmanuelle Chriqui (who can also be seen in the delightful sounding “Women in Trouble”) has now been added to the cast as a Georgian native and doctoral student who becomes tangled up with Kilmer and his cameraman during the event. Harlin will produce and direct the movie, »

Somali Pirates Plan On Boarding A Theater Near You

23 October 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more »
