The Cove: The Flipside of Flipper

18 December 2009 8:46 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Richard O’Barry is the man who trained Flipper; The Lassie of the sea and surprisingly, in the opening moments of The Cove the man who believes that by sparking the public interest in these fascinating creatures, he is directly responsible for the way the species is treated, bought and sold today. The Cove takes us to a small beach near Taiji, in Wakayama, Japan, which O’Barry has discovered is actually a dolphin slaughtering ground where upon a handful of intense fishermen are reportedly capturing and killing more than 2,000 dolphins per year for their meat only after picking specimens to be sold into aquariums.  Along with National Geographic photographer and the films Director Louis Psihoyos, O’Barry seems intent on giving the town’s dirty little secret to the world and it’s his always wet eyes and an affecting sincere way of speaking about his favorite animals which »

Scott Nicholson knows more than one way how to frighten fans

10 December 2009 12:11 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

There’s more than one reason to plant corn. Just ask Scott Nicholson, who grows his own gardens every year. Besides providing good table fare, the process of cultivating the land helps reinvigorate the senses.

Like a garden’s variety, Nicholson is a versatile writer. Short stories, novels, comic books, screenplays – you name it and he has probably written it.

That’s what happens when you’re talented, and Nicholson is one of the most talented writers who’ve come on the scene in recent years. His tales of supernatural terror have swooned readers into fits of gooseflesh, leaving them craving for more. His first book was a collection of short stories; his second, an atmospheric novel about small-town evil whose antagonist was nothing more than a creepy church.

Well, that’s not exactly true. There was a lot more to The Red Church, the title of the book, than a worship hall. »

A Decade of Movies: One Man’s Cinematic Journey

9 December 2009 10:43 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Before 2001, movies really didn’t mean a lot to me. Sure, I loved the general mainstream fair that blew up the box office and showed enough sex and violence to keep my demented, testosterone-saturated mind happy, but the Art of Cinema was completely lost on me. Movies like Under Siege and Commando dominated my late nights in front of the television, and I can distinctly remember seeing a trailer for Fargo and thinking, “What the goddamn fuck?” (I also remember begging my stepdad to let me watch Showgirls so I could “see the boobs.” Hey, I’m not proud. My attitude might not have changed, but at least I’m a little more subtle now.) But what do you expect? I was sixteen and far more interested in John Grisham novels and The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time to really care too much about what was playing at the local movie theater. I »

Bookstore Baksheesh: The Real Estate Deals That Sell Books

30 November 2009 12:30 PM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

The closer a table is to the front of the bookstore, the more expensive the real estate--and each book on each table costs publishers anywhere from $3,000 to $30,000, and even up to $50,000 depending on placement. [Viral Loop Chronicles Part 6]

Step into any Barnes & Noble and the first thing you see are tables covered in books. 'Tis the season, so there's the "Happy Holidays" table, with its quirky array of titles--Cornell West's new memoir, Ken Auletta's Googled, Alexandra Horowitz's Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know, a biography of Thelonious Monk--authors and subjects with seemingly little if anything in common. The "Gift Books" table (20% off) is stacked with painstakingly crafted art books--one with gorgeous photos of the Vatican flanked by the Marvel Comics Encyclopedia and a history of Lego, the snappable children's toy. There's "Children's Books," "History," "Biographies," "New Arrivals," and "New in Paperback." Off to the right, Dean Koontz warrants his own narrow shelf. »

Book Publishers Face the Prisoner's Dilemma

22 October 2009 3:22 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

One of the biggest pricing dramas of 2009 is taking place as we speak -- the war between Wal-Mart and Amazon on top-selling hardcover books.

Wal-Mart launched the war last week by offering 10 highly anticipated titles (by well-known authors including John Grisham, Stephen King, Dean Koonz and Sarah Palin) for $10. After a few back-and-forth volleys, Wal-Mart is now selling the titles for $8.99 (free shipping) and Amazon has a $9 price (free shipping only if total purchases are $25 or more).

At these prices, both retailers are losing money on each sale. The traditional wholes »

Tommy Lee Jones to Direct Matthew McConaughey in "The Lincoln Lawyer"

14 October 2009 9:46 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Tommy Lee Jones is in talks to direct and co-star in "The Lincoln Lawyer." Matthew McConaughey heads the cast of this film adaptation based on the 2005 best-seller by Michael Connelly.

McConaughey is set to play Mickey Haller, a Los Angeles lawyer whose office is the back of his Lincoln. He defends run-of-the-mill criminals until he lands the case of a lifetime -- defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder.

It's still unclear what Jones will play because in the book, the playboy character is a lot younger than the actor, But, they may change the age to fit him.

John Romano ("Nights in Rodanthe," "Intolerable Cruelty") wrote the script. Jones has directed a film before, the excellent "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada." He also starred in that movie, winning a Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.

McConaughey has played a lawyer before in the John Grisham adaptation, »

'The Vampire Diaries' recap: The secret and Damon are out

9 October 2009 5:08 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It looks like this show is about to get really, really good. Everything we wanted to happen is: Elena has pieced together the truth about Stefan (cue the flashback montage!), Bonnie is ready to accept who she is (enter Grandma Jasmine Guy, which made me feel as old as the first time I heard someone say they were born in the '80s), and Vicki should be dead (drink, Damon, drink!). Yes! So, we knew Damon would get out of that basement dungeon sooner rather than later. This show could not survive without his biting dark wit, even if Stefan »

'Big Bang Theory': Sheldon makes Penny his lab rat

5 October 2009 11:07 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Poor Wolowitz and Koothrappali -- or, as I've taken to calling the inseparable duo, Woloppali. With Leonard and Penny (Lenny? Pennard?) soaking up so much screen time -- or rather, with their relationship soaking up so much of Sheldon's time -- Big Bang Theory's horny C-3Po and guileless R2-D2 were left adrift in a subplot that peaked at the very top of the episode. Namely, the mighty choice sight gag of Wolowitz walking in decked out like an Adam Lambert wannabe sporting a coif that was somehow equal parts emo and rockabilly. But it was all downhill from there. »

Every now and then, a movie comes out that transforms a male actor into someone to be desired, adored and often watched for decades to come. We're experiencing such a phenomenon now with Robert Pattinson, who has essentially starred in one wide-release movie and had "Twilight" transform him from "Who's that?" to "Hottest Man Alive" overnight.

But where does RPattz go from here? Will he launch a decades-long career? Work with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese? Or will he become another Hollywood cautionary tale? Below are a handful of beefcake breakouts transformed by one major role, whose careers could perhaps give guidance to the Sparkly One.

The Informant! Review

17 September 2009 10:47 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catching liars is fun.  Watching someone lie badly is funny.  Watching someone lie badly when you know the truth is funnier.  Realizing you’ve been lied to isn’t funny at all.  Lies can be a valuable tool when you’re the dumbest guy in the room and when you manage to get away with lying to everyone else, it makes you the smartest guy even though the truth will out.  Director Stephen Soderbergh’s latest film, “The Informant!”, is built entirely out of lies but not in a surreal/everything’s subjective-kind of way.  It’s a film about the usefulness of lies and how like anything that’s fun, it can become addicting and it can be abused.  It’s a heavy theme but carried with the lightness Soderbergh brought to the “Ocean’s” movies, “The Informant!” is absolutely delightful.

Shia Labeouf: How I Lost My Virginity

31 July 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Transformers star Shia Labeouf says losing his virginity was awkward (it usually is for most people, Shia). “Getting naked was very strange,” recalls Labeouf, 23. “It was the first time I’d been naked in the light, in front of a girl, with no hiding place.” Labeouf, who was recently cast in Money Never Sleeps (the sequel to the ’80s blockbuster Wall Street), has been enjoying a leisurely summer so far. Shia can afford to sit back and relax. His latest film, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen (co-starring the sizzling Megan Fox), has grossed over $800 million worldwide since its June 24 release. Labeouf will soon start shooting The Associate, a legal thriller based on a John Grisham novel. Shia's next film, New York, I Love You, comes out in October. »

Zac Efron just finished filming a guest spot on Entourage, so it would only make sense for someone like Chace Crawford to be next in line…right? Not if the hit HBO show's star Jeremy Piven has anything to do with it! The Piv has someone completely different in mind... "I'd like to do a scene with Dustin Hoffman where I represent him and he's my client, and I'm really trying to get him to do a big movie that he'd never do," Piven told us at Xbox 360's EA Sports Madden NFL 10 launch party in Santa Monica. "That'd be like a dream come true." Piven and Hoffman have actually already worked together in the 2003 big-screen adaptation of John Grisham's thriller »

Sam Worthington, the guy who stole "Terminator Salvation" from Christian Bale, is going to work for the house that "Twilight" built.

The actor will star in Summit Entertainment's remake of "The Candidate," a Danish film that is right up there with the best films based on John Grisham novels.

The story follows a lawyer who wakes up in a hotel room with a dead woman in the bathroom. Who is this woman, and why can't he remember her? As he fights to clear his name, he gets embroiled in a mystery connected to his father's mysterious death.

The script will be adapted by Beau Willimon.

News: Clooney Leaving Warner Brothers / Soderbergh Abandons Moneyball / Details Emerge on American Remake of Let the Right One In / Adams to Star in The Fighter? / Jones to Follow Up Moon with Mute

6 July 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s production company Smokehouse Entertainment have left their longtime friends at Warner Brothers and have signed a two year contract with Sony.  It kind of feels like strange timing after Sony just screwed over longtime collaborator Steven Soderbergh and his baseball docu-drama Moneyball.  It kind of feels like the end of an era with this announcement.  This was one of the great actor studio partnerships of the past 20 years.  It began with the Clooney / Soderbergh company Section Eight.  It included such intelligent adult fare as Good Night and Good Luck, Michael Clayton, Syriana, Far From Heaven, Insomnia, Criminal, and A Scanner Darkly.  They would recoup their losses through The Ocean’s Eleven Trilogy.  Whatever you thought about these films they took risks and tried to inject some originality and intellect into Hollywood.  Their critical successes did outweigh the honorable failures (The Good German, Leatherheads).  Section »

George Clooney sets up shop at Sony Pictures

30 June 2009 7:40 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Movie studios are a lot like individual people. Some develop a reputation as being thrifty and don't want to spend a lot, some are known for being more open to taking chances on arthouse projects while others make their bread on mainstream movies filled with lots of explosions. Over the past decade one of the studios that proved itself to be willing to take equal chances on big budget, high concept tentpoles and smaller dramatic fare is Warner Bros. For the past decade WB has been the place that George Clooney has developed his personal projects, first with director Steven Soderbergh under their Section 8 production company banner and then later with writer/director Grant Heslov under the new company Smokehouse Pictures.

Now, after three years working with Warners, Smokehouse is now cutting a deal to develop new movies for Sony Pictures. A press release went out today from Sony announcing »

George Clooney And Smoke House Move From Warner Bros To Sony

30 June 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I haven’t always been a fan of George Clooney’s. I first came across him during his “ER” days, at an age when it was cool to mock such things. The bias I harbored after that continued all the way up through and beyond “Batman & Robin.” Then Clooney started taking on smart projects, like “Three Kings” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” I found myself liking the guy and his work despite myself.

So I feel a bit sorry for old George at the news that he and Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov have been traded away from Warner Bros to Sony. Which isn’t to say that Sony is a bad outfit. Clooney and Heslov have almost a decade of history with WB though. Smokehouse hasn’t exactly performed to expectations, but it’s a shame to see their long partnership end. Clooney’s Smoke House Heads to Sony

30 June 2009 2:17 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

George Clooney is moving his production company Smoke House from Warner Bros. to Sony Pictures, report the trades. The shingle, which Clooney runs with Grant Heslov, is in final negotiations for a two-year first-look deal with Sony to develop and produce movie projects. Clooney has called Warners his home for almost a decade, first under the banner of Section Eight, the company started by him and Steven Soderbergh, then more recently with Grant Heslov under Smoke House. Smoke House signed its three year first-look deal in July 2006. Warner Bros. and Section Eight’s relationship was a strong one, with Clooney producing the Ocean's trilogy, Michael Clayton, Good Night, and Good Luck, Syriana and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind for the studio. However, his Smoke House days with Warners hasn’t been as active. Despite several high-profile projects in development, including adaptations of the stage play Farragut North and the John Grisham novel The Innocent Man, »
