Review: 'Two Girls and a Guy' on Blu-ray

6 November 2009 1:07 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

When an actor or director suddenly breaks out and gets hot, studios scour their vaults to see if there’s a way they can capitalize on this heat. Last year, Robert Downey, Jr. went from a troubled, gifted actor to a Super Star thanks to his performance in Iron Man. This week, 20th Century-Fox hopes to catch a break with the Blu-ray release of Downey’s 1998 film Two Girls and a Guy.

Written and direct by James Toback, the film is virtually a real time three-person stage play on a film. In his self-congratulatory 20 minute conversation on the Extras, Toback talks about how he came to write the film, by beginning to imagine a setting. In this case, that’s the spacious loft apartment which became the set his performances would use. After that, he populated the apartment with his players.

Two Girls and a Guy – Blu-ray

Blu-ray Review

Two Girls and a Guy

Directed by: James Toback

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Heather Graham, Natasha Gregson Wagner

Running Time: 1 hr 25 mins

Rating: R or Nc-17

Due Out: November 3, 2009

Plot: A man (Downey Jr.) is simultaneously confronted by the two women (Graham, Wagner) he has been seeing at the same time.

Who’S It For? This 1997 indie movie seems to have fallen under the radar in all of its stars’ filmographies. So yes, who is this small moment in everyone’s career for? Heather Graham Collectivists?

Movie:

When asked of his dreams, a neighborly mage once stated with stunning simplicity, “two chicks at the same time.” Two Girls and A Guy has the optional Nc-17 rating and a title that works also as the name for a bland porno, but it is thankfully not the simple realization of a man’s dream to knock boots with two babes. »

'G.I. Joe' Rises With A Bang, Denzel Catches A Train And More In The DVD Report For November 3

3 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After weeks of rather lackluster releases ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" being a prominent exception), we finally have a Tuesday jam-packed with first-run titles and notable catalog additions. From the on-screen debut of an elite military team to John Cusack's ode to love, we're covering them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, November 3.

For any child of the '80s, the thought of "G.I. Joe" receiving the theatrical treatment was an intriguing proposition, and one fraught with worry. And for die-hard fans of writer Larry Hama's epic "G.I. Joe" comic book run, it was especially scary. In stark contrast to the campy animated series, Hama infused his 155-issue run with deeply developed character arcs, ever-twisting conspiracies and, to his credit, pulled no punches when it came to violence and death. Which "G.I. Joe" would the film rely on for its story and tone? While producers insisted they'd »

'We'll have our three main characters,' he says of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

In 1996, "Scream" came out of nowhere to bring the horror genre back from the dead like Michael Myers sitting up after a coat hanger to the eyeball. Acclaimed as the smartest horror film in years, it yielded a trilogy that would gross hundreds of millions of dollars and clear a path for dozens of self-aware genre flicks ranging from "Zombieland" to "Adaptation."

Now, it's getting ready to come back again for another stab.

"It's going good," said writer Kevin Williamson, giving us an exclusive update on the new trilogy (!) he's writing. "I've gotta finish that baby."

The series made box-office stars out of Neve Campbell, Jamie Kennedy and Skeet Ulrich as they were teamed alongside Drew Barrymore, Patrick Dempsey, Heather Graham and others in twisty, »

Can Heather Graham Sell the Public Option?

21 October 2009 11:34 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

A new TV ad produced by MoveOn.com and starring Heather Graham seeks to make the case for the public option as a critical—and widely supported—component of health-care reform using a somewhat silly track-and-field conceit. “What does Heather Graham have to do with health-care reform?” you may ask. Not much, perhaps, but in this ad she plays the Public Option (that’s what the sign on her chest says), and how she does it says a lot about the goals of the pro-reform lobby. The ad depicts health-insurance companies as decadent dopes loafing around at the starting line of a race (it appears to be the 100-meter dash). Suddenly, they are caught off guard by the appearance of a new competitor, a glowing, graceful Heather Graham, who shows them up with her agility and speed. The voice-over narration explains: »

Graham Gets Political

9 October 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Heather Graham is following in the footsteps of campaigning actresses Angelina Jolie and Jane Fonda and making a stand for a political cause.

The Boogie Nights star is currently in New York City, shooting a new public service announcement for MoveOn.org, reports ExtraTV.com

The organisation is a liberal advocacy group, which raises money for the U.S. Democrat party candidates.

The 39-year-old star was an outspoken supporter of Democrat President Barack Obama ahead of last year's General Election, and even claims a hand in his victory over Republican John McCain.

She said at the time, “I have this group of friends and we get together and we call ourselves The Goddesses and we wish for things and then a lot of amazing things have happened to all of us. We burn things - honouring the elements of earth, wind, air and fire. You do spells. We did this thing where we were calling on the wind and the air and this whole storm started on my roof. It was amazing and… empowering.

“My friends really wanted Obama to be elected so we all did a spell and then he got elected. Worked out good.” »

Review: Did You Ever See… Swingers?

8 October 2009 10:04 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Couples Retreat is released this week. Once again Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn re-team, this time in a comedy about four couples who attend a therapeutic couples retreat, little knowing they’ll be expected to put their relationships under the microscope.

Vaughan and Favreau have worked together in several films, most notably in Favreau’s self-penned Swingers in 1996. Directed by Doug Liman, it’s a hip, trendy comedy with cool, likeable characters and endlessly quotable lines. Or is it?

When i first saw Swingers over 10 years ago, i loved it. I loved the snappy dialogue and the laid back attitude of the characters, as they hit the best nightspots and hot parties. My experience re-watching it this week was entirely different.

Mike (Favreau) is a comedian slash actor, who has been in La for sixth months since his girlfriend left him. Mike is really the main character. Now, usually, the main character is likeable, »

The Odd Couple: Emmy Rossum and Adam Duritz

Who and what were up and down last night and why. &#8593 Charitable Stripping: Uptown in New York City, the typically staid auction crowd got a refreshing shakeup last night when Sotheby's held its Take Home a Nude event, which supported the New York Academy of Art. Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf weren't there to bid, but those who did show up included Liev Schreiber, the newly expectant Padma Lakshmi, Ronald Perelman, and Heather Graham. &#8593 New "It Spots": Downtown in New York City, the Cinema Society christened the just-opened Crosby Street hotel (which is sure to become the new hot hangout) with a screening of An Education, a film about a schoolgirl who is seduced by an older man. Lindsay Lohan's Fashion Debut Bombs at Paris Fashion Week

5 October 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While the wreckage of her acting career is still smoldering, Lindsay Lohan's career as fashion designer looks headed for a similar result. Hired as "artistic adviser" to the struggling French label Emanuel Ungaro, she presented models appearing "in loose-fitting jackets that flapped open to reveal that they wore sequin-covered pasties, in the shape of hearts, on their breasts, leaving several people in the audience aghast." Classy, Lindsay!

Noted French art director Fabien Baron savaged her dryly, saying, "We love Lindsay Lohan — as an actress. Period." And style.com photographer Greg Kessler took pics of front-row guests "asking them to pose as Ms. Lohan by holding up their hands, ashamedly, in front of their faces."

This is just the latest in a series of setbacks for LiLo. Her most recent movie (Labor Pains) went straight to DVD, and it was reported she turned down the Heather Graham role in The Hangover »

Cinematical Seven: Scariest Movie Characters on Wheels

2 October 2009 7:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In this week's Whip It, director-star Drew Barrymore shines a loving light on one of the most brutal and devilishly entertaining sports around: roller derby. If you've ever seen a derby match, you know what I'm talking about: 60 minutes of fast-skating, bruising action between players with names like Axles of Evil and Juana Beat'n. In celebration of the badass beauties of the roller derby world and their Whip It counterparts - including Ellen Page as "Babe Ruthless," Kristin Wiig as "Maggie Mayhem," Barrymore as "Smashley Simpson," and Zoe Bell as "Bloody Holly" - here's a Cinematical Seven remembering some of the scariest, fiercest movie characters to ever lace up a pair of roller skates.

1. Rollergirl - Boogie Nights

In Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Rollergirl (Heather Graham) is a fixture in Jack Horner's porn family who's up for anything but never, ever takes off those skates. She's young, »

Miley Cyrus rumored to be in 'Sex and the City' sequel. Say what?

We just can't wait to see the women of Sex and the City again. But how do we feel about seeing the mature foursome on screen with teeny bopper magnet Miley Cyrus? It certainly looks like the risque franchise might flirt with the Disney icon -- the young starlet is rumored to be making a cameo in 2010's Satc sequel. (When asked if the rumors were true, New Line issued "no comment" to EW, but gossip sites like this are claiming to have confirmed the news.) Now, it doesn't appear as though Cyrus will take on a vital role, but »

Alexandra Sokoloff ('The Unseen', 'The Harrowing')

By Alan Kelly

Alexandra Sokoloff is a screen-writer well established in California writing novel adaptations (like the thriller Cold Kisses) for various Hollywood studios like Sony, Miramax and Disney. A graduate of Uc Berkeley where she majored in theatre and minored in just about everything else. Sokoloff has had three extremely well-received novels published: The Harrowing, The Price and The Unseen and is collaborating on a vampire trilogy with Heather Graham and Deborah Leblanc, which is due out next year...

Sokoloff explores themes of loss, loneliness, things that may be at the edge of our awareness or merely manufactured traumas created by the unnerving worlds her characters inhabit, plunging her readers into terrifying occult realms. Her novels are slices of supernatural realism which are fast, punchy, clever and chock-full of creepy intrigue.

Structure seems very important to you. Do you map your novels out before beginning; I ask this because »
