Glen Powell is slowly becoming an interesting actor with the choice of films he is participating in. While he has played pivotal parts in acclaimed films like Everybody Wants Some!!, and Hidden Figures in the 2010s, he became a sensation as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. He followed the huge success of that film with the rom-com Anyone But You.

Emily Henry fans had a field day last week when the author shared a St. Patrick’s day selfie of “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Normal People’s” Paul Mescal.
While Edebiri posted the original image to her Instagram, it was reposts from Henry and screenwriter Yulin Kuang that made fans start to assume that the actors may have been cast in one of the films being adapted from Henry’s romance books: “People We Meet on Vacation,” for which Kuang is writing the screenplay; “Beach Read,” with Kuang writing and directing; or “Book Lovers,” being developed by the company that produced Mescal’s “Aftersun.”
The posts came just months after Mescal said in an interview that he hoped to star in a rom-com with Edebiri sometime in the next five years.

Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher will star in a new Delia Ephron play on Broadway this fall.
The new play, called Left on Tenth and based on Ephron’s memoir, will be directed by Susan Stroman, director and choreographer of The Producers. Daryl Roth will produce. A theater and dates for the Broadway engagement have not yet been announced.
The play follows Delia, who co-wrote You’ve Got Mail and the play Love, Loss and What I Wore with her sister, Nora Ephron, as she reconnects with a man from her past and “falls into her own romantic comedy,” as she battles cancer.
Marguiles, a star of The Morning Show and The Good Wife, has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2006 play Festen. Gallagher has ten Broadway credits, most recently starring in the 2015 revival of On the Twentieth Century, and is also known for his on-screen work, including on The O.C. and Grace and Frankie.

The romcom ruled the 1980s, and the Apatow comedies ruled the 2000s. The tastes may change, but films that bring incredible chemistry to the screen stand the test of time. It’s why we still watch When Harry Met Sally and The Forty-Year-Old Virgin decades after their release. Babes — a new film from Illana Glazer, Pamela Adlon, and Josh Rabinowitz, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Yet, with Glazer in the lead, it’s got a unique sense of humor by returning to her Broad City roots.
Babes Plot
Best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) watch movies every Thanksgiving. However, this year, Dawn goes into labor during the tradition. After helping Dawn to the hospital, Eden heads home for the night. While on the subway, she meets an actor who shares all of her interests. The two head home and have a one-night stand. Weeks later, Eden discovers she’s pregnant.

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.
By Jan. 26, producer Lynda Obst had heard enough. “I have to write about this misplaced horror,” Obst unloaded on Facebook, offering a history lesson pulled from personal experience, reminding her readers that comedies rarely fare well at the Academy Awards in top categories. Rob Reiner directed When Harry Met Sally back in 1989. Written by Nora Ephron, the movie starred Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in the two titular roles, and went on to become a top-tier placeholder in the genre of romantic comedies. Reiner himself made a lot of contributions to the screenplay of the movie, and was even the basis for the character of Harry. Ephron, on the other hand, was the basis of the character Sally.

The movie’s initial idea came from Reiner as well. After his divorce from his first wife, Penny Marshal, an interview with Ephron was where the idea snowballed into a script for a movie. And it was also Reiner who decided to change the initial ending to guve Harry and Sally their happy ending.

Classic rom-com When Harry Met Sally originally had a more heartbreaking ending where Harry and Sally didn’t get together. Here’s why that was changed.
It’s hard to imagine a rom-com that is more perfect, more iconic than When Harry Met Sally. Rob Reiner’s 1989 classic has long been considered one of the best of the genre and is often looked at as a blueprint for how to make a romantic comedy work.
Well, it turns out that the ending of When Harry Met Sally was originally very different. The current ending sees Harry confess his love for Sally at a New Year’s Eve party and the two get married and live happily ever after.

The ending of When Harry Met Sally was not how it was initially conceived, and director Rob Reiner is opening up about what changed his mind.
In a new interview for Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Reiner revealed that the 1989 romantic comedy had a “tearjerking ending.”
“The original ending of the film that we had was that Harry and Sally didn’t get together,” Reiner said on the CNN show.
The film’s ending has Billy Crystal’s Harry see Meg Ryan’s Sally at a New Year’s Eve party, where he declares his love for her. After sharing a kiss, it’s revealed that they go on and get married three months later.

Rob Reiner’s 1980s classic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ almost had quite a different ending, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. During an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace, the classic film’s director and co-writer Rob Reiner revealed that his and Nora Ephron’s script originally had a sadder ending for Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan).
“It was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking and then walking away from each other,” Reiner told Wallace, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. “I had been married for 10 years. I’d been single for 10 years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody, and that gave birth to ‘When Harry Met Sally’.”
Reiner continued, “I met my wife Michele, who I’ve been married to now for 35 years. I met her while we were making the film, and I changed the ending.

Kate Hudson appeared on “The View” and reflected on the recent 20th anniversary of her iconic romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” The genre has lost much its box office dominance in the decades since Hudson first linked up with Matthew McConaughey to the tune of $105 million at the domestic box office and $177 million worldwide. For comparison’s sake, the just-released rom-com “Anyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, has earned a decent $38 million and counting worldwide.
“It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson said about the current state of the genre. “That’s a big part of the equation … is to have that event. If we can get more Marvel guys like … hey, come to do a rom-com! That’s part of the formula, too. That event.”

The legend of rom coms has spoken. Kate Hudson stopped by The View for Thursday’s episode to share her take on the genre and covered her keys to a classic romantic comedy.
“It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson said when discussing why How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days resonated with viewers over the last two decades. “As long as we can get more Marvel guys to like, you know, ‘Hey, come to a rom-com!,’ I think that that’s a big part of the formula too.

Kate Hudson knows what makes a successful rom-com, but there’s one piece to the puzzle that is a little more difficult to come by.
During an appearance on Thursday’s episode of The View, the actress admitted that she finds it “hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms.”
Hudson explained that having the right leading man is an important aspect of the movies. “As long as we can get more Marvel guys to like, you know, ‘Hey, come to a rom-com!,’ I think that that’s a big part of the formula, too,” she added.
The View‘s Sara Haines proceeded to ask Hudson why she thinks there’s a lack of appeal for male actors to take on romantic comedies.

From the will-they-won’t-they romance of When Harry Met Sally to the acid-burn comedy of Festen, organised jollity is a gift for film-makers
It’s New Year’s Eve, the one night a year when otherwise commonplace parties take on a slightly desperate significance, a need to succeed. You have to set the tone for the year ahead, and warm prosecco on an emptying dancefloor doesn’t bode well for anyone. This degree of pressure sets up almost any celebration to fail – though a bad party can launch as many formative memories as a good one. Look at the movies where parties pave the way for swooning romantic connection, social catastrophe or the end of the world: with the help of a few drinks, any drama speeds up.

Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).
Asked by a fan to name some roles she has turned down in career, Roberts stressed that she does not regret any of her choices. She said any...

There’s a scene in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love where Julia Roberts’s character Liz basks in the experience of eating a guilt-free pizza. It was an important character moment for her–and for many audience members. And whatever your specific dietary preferences or requirements may be, we hope that you’ll enjoy whatever your guilt-free “pizza moment” is this Thanksgiving, surrounded by friends and family (chosen or otherwise.)
Food, of course, has played as major a role in cinema as any other basic human biological function, from the sprawling bowls of pasta in the works of Martin Scorsese, to the last decade’s trend of thoughtfully investigative health-leaning food docs such as Food Inc. and Forks Over Knives. With the fourth Thursday of every November comes an opportunity to give thanks, as families across the United States gather around warm fires and hand-decorated tables to break seasonal bread. The festive tableau — loved ones pulled close by the promise of turkey, stuffing, sides, and pie — is synonymous with what little it seems still unites Americans these days. And yet, the actual experience of the divisive holiday (notorious for its deeply dubious history origins and penchant for forcing fun with problematic relatives) can be enough to send you fleeing from the dining room in a fit of stressed-out gravy sweats.
When you’re done navigating the metaphoric minefield that is kith and kin, why not find comfort in a different kind of holiday hearth? We’re talking about the glowing screens that keep cozy all year long. Whether you’re enjoying a festive holiday movie or something else, films help...

At the end of Meg Ryan’s beguiling and grown-up new romantic comedy What Happens Later, a simple dedication card shows on screen that says “For Nora.” And for star, director and co-writer Ryan, that says it all. After an eight-year absence from the screen, Ryan has returned, both in front of and behind the camera, to a genre that made her a huge star thanks also in large part to the late great Nora Ephron, whose trio of collaborations with Ryan — When Harry Met Sally (directed by Rob Reiner), Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail — truly defined what a joyful experience a romantic comedy could be when in the right hands.
Ryan clearly learned at the altar of a master, and it is all on display in this lilting, wistful, magical and wise confection, a two-hander about an accidental reunion of two college lovers some 30 years older. They make a new,...

The actor also takes on directing duties for her return to the genre she’s best known for, opposite David Duchovny, with mostly so-so results
There’s an impressive level of confidence displayed by Meg Ryan in her second outing as director, less so for what the film itself ends up being but more for what she’s trying to emulate. The star of When Harry Met Sally making a talky two-hander romcom, dedicated to that film’s screenwriter, Nora Ephron, demands an immediate comparison to one of the greatest examples of the genre ever made. But What Happens Later, Aka When Meg Met David Duchovny, is set up for an almighty fall, struggling to even deserve comparison to the star’s less-lauded romcoms.

Meg Ryan has returned to rom-coms, but sadly, even one she co-wrote and directed is not worthy of her charm. Ryan co-stars alongside David Duchovny in “What Happens Later,” based on the play “Shooting Star” by Steven Dietz. Ryan co-wrote the script along with playwright Dietz and Kirk Lynn; the film marks her sophomore directorial effort following 2015’s WWII drama “Ithaca.”
In the film, Ryan and Duchovny play two halves of the same whole — literally. Both star-crossed characters are named W. Davis, which the script reminds audiences every ten minutes or so in metronome-like precision. The first W. Davis, William, who goes by Bill (Duchovny), is a former poet and songwriter-turned-stockbroker whose youthful artistic hopes are rekindled after running into his ex-girlfriend, Willa (Ryan). Their bickering turns to banter turns to, yes, an inevitable return to romance as both W. Davises are stuck in a podunk airport 25 years after last seeing each other.

Nothing gold can stay, and to make room for everything new at Hulu in November, we have to say goodbye to dozens of the series and movies on the platform. The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Meg Ryan is “enchanting.” It’s hard to think of a better word to describe her than the one Nora Ephron used in the “You’ve Got Mail” script — a word repeated four times in the first 30 minutes of the 1998 film.
My ears perk up when Ryan uses it now, nearly 25 years later. We’re sitting across from each other in a suite at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, meeting to speak about her new film — her first in eight years. She’s the co-writer, director, executive producer and co-star, alongside David Duchovny, of “What Happens Later,” an enchanting romantic comedy about ex-lovers who find themselves stranded by a snowstorm.
There’s no denying that Ryan, 61, is a movie star. Only, she doesn’t seem to know it: She pulls her overcoat tight around her body to cover up any ostentatiously fancy garments she may have underneath. Throughout our conversation,...

Meg Ryan’s much-anticipated return to the rom-com, What Happens Later, has landed an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA ahead of its Nov. 3 theatrical release.
Bleecker Street is releasing the film nationwide, which stars David Duchovny and Ryan as a former couple who get snowed in at a regional airport overnight. The synopsis of the film reads: “Indefinitely delayed, Willa (Ryan), a magical thinker, and Bill (Duchovny), a catastrophic one, find themselves just as attracted to and annoyed by one another as they did decades earlier. But as they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something more enchanted.”
The film is seen as a nod to Ryan’s longtime collaborator Nora Ephron, who directed the star in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, among other titles.

Michael Chow is meant to be in Riyadh. But as drones spell out his name in the sky above Saudi Arabia’s capital, heralding the Oct. 5 opening of the latest outpost of his eponymous restaurant, the charismatic restaurateur, artist and bon vivant is in his Los Angeles home, grounded with a positive Covid-19 test. He is in good spirits nonetheless. “My name is Gatsby,” Chow says with a laugh, invoking the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tragic hero, known for hosting extravagant parties but not necessarily attending them. “When he gives a party, they always turn up.”
Of course, Chow, 84, has long been known for his hosting prowess, with more than five decades of feeding the A-list legions of Hollywood, fashion, art, politics and beyond at his Mr. Chow restaurants. Now numbering seven locations, his empire launched with a London spot that opened in 1968, followed by Beverly Hills in...

The author Terry Pratchett, who has a quote for everything, once said this about Lord of the Rings: “J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.”
Molli and Max in the Future, the debut feature by Michael Lukk Litwak, is indeed standing on a mountain, and in this case – because this is a romantic comedy, not a fantasy – that mountain is When Harry Met Sally. Korean-Canadian writer-director Celine Song’s tremendous feature debut tells the poignant tale of childhood sweethearts separated by fate and thousands of miles
This supremely confident feature debut from Korean-Canadian writer-director Celine Song is a spine-tingling gem – a tale of not-so-brief encounters between star-crossed souls, played out over a period of 24 years. Combining the aching yearning of Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love with the casual intimacy of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, it paints a picture of unresolved affection as delicate as it is profound, interweaving timeless themes of fate and providence with more playfully down-to-earth musings on happenstance and shapeshifting identity. The result, which has one foot in South Korea and the other in North America, feels at times like an impossible mashup of Davy Chou’s Return to Seoul and Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle, shot through with a stoical melancholia that recalls the final...

The first trailer for What Happens Later makes it clear the title isn’t supposed to have a question mark at the end. Meg Ryan, a queen of romantic comedies back when rom-coms were smiled upon by audiences and studios, returns to the genre as co-writer, director, and star, teaming with David Duchovny to tell the story of a former couple who find themselves stuck together in an airport.
“It has a relationship to movies from the ’40s, like Bringing Up Baby, in terms of the banter and the rhythm of things and a lot of that era of filmmaking,” explained Ryan in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Nora Ephron used to say about rom-coms that they were really a secretly incredible delivery system to comment on the times, and we do that in this movie.”

We’ve had the pleasure of featuring the diverse and exploratory work of Erin Murray here on Dn since 2016 and her latest piece I Don’t Need To Know – written, directed and starring the filmmaker – sees the prolific multi-hyphenate artist explore an alternative facet of her creative endeavours with delightful results. An apparently innocuous day out for one couple suddenly turns sour as Murray’s character, leaning inspirationally on personal conversations about sex, decides to cajole her partner into discussing a hidden facet of their relationship with an outwardly innocent question about sexual fantasies. I Don’t Need To Know combines quick-witted back-and-forth dialogue, brilliantly delivered by Murray alongside Al Warren, with well planned out camera angles which come together to form a wholly absorbing four minute comedy short. It was a pleasure to catch up with Murray again to speak about using all of the possible angels in the car,...

A hot button issue in recent cinema criticism – well, warm button anyway – is the eradication of intelligent mid-budget dramas in the Hollywood system. Making decently acted, well-written, approachable, middle to upper-middlebrow movies with three or four grownup leads for theatrical release used to be an honourable tradition. Now it’s getting squeezed out by franchise products, and maybe because producers dread an eye-rolling comment of “first world problems” at the pitch meeting.
But writer-director Nicole Holofcener is keeping the flag flying with her shrewd, talky movies about middle-aged anxiety. I wasn’t a fan of Friends With Money, but Enough Said, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini, was a terrific romantic comedy. Now there is You Hurt My Feelings, a smart, if faintly exhausting comedy about midlife disillusionment with a lot of bitter in the bittersweet.

While Bob Dylan writes deeply personal lyrics, he typically doesn’t use music to air out his dirty laundry. He has had feuds with people but doesn’t like going public with it. However, in “Ballad of a Thin Man,” he refers to somebody named Mr. Jones, who he directs this nasty song at. Many people like to speculate who Bob Dylan refers to in “Ballad of a Thin Man”.
Bob Dylan said ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’ is about a real person, but he’s never confirmed who it is
“Ballad of a Thin Man” debuted in 1965 on Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited. It’s one of Dylan’s more malicious songs, as it insults and calls out a man referred to as Mr. Jones. Dylan spoke with journalists Nora Ephron and Susan Edmiston shortly after the song debuted. He confirmed that Mr. Jones is an actual person but...

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan exude timeless star power as a couple kept apart for almost the entirety of the 1993 classic
Sleepless in Seattle – the film, the phrase – conjures the kind of quixotic romance that already seems long lost to us, on screen and elsewhere.
Nora Ephron specialized in whimsical courtships – majestic grand gestures, emotionally lofty stakes, couples too perfect for each other for lightning ever to strike so precisely again. As her sophomore directorial venture approaches its 30th year, Sleepless in Seattle remains famously unrivaled in the sheer brilliance of its feat: a love story in which the lovers share roughly 2 minutes of screen time. Ephron’s bold tribute to the cinematic romances of her youth is one deviously elaborate, protracted journey to the “meet-cute”. Fitting then, that our lovers’ tale begins on the road.

Tom Hanks turned down the lead in 'When Harry Met Sally...' because he was "happy" to be getting divorced. The 'Elvis' actor's wife Rita Wilson - who he wed in 1988, a year after his marriage to Samantha Lewes ended - revealed the Oscar-winning star was offered Billy Crystal's role of Harry Burns in the classic 1989 film, but struggled to understand the perspective of the character.Speaking on 'Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi', Rita said: "People probably don’t know this, but Tom was offered 'When Harry Met Sally…', and he turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happy to be not married.“And so he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, ‘I’m so happy.’”Tom went on to star opposite 'When Harry Met Sally...'...
