Depp to narrate Doors documentary

9 February 2009 9:54 PM, PST | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Johnny Depp has reportedly been asked to narrate an upcoming documentary about The Doors. According to Screen Daily, the actor will voice Tom Dicillo's feature film When You're Strange, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month. Dicillo originally provided the narration himself, but it is reported that Depp will begin work on an updated version in the next few weeks. "Johnny saw the film early (more) »

Depp is 'Strange'

9 February 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The word during the Sundance film festival was that Tom Dicillo's narration was a little overbearing -- it was this negative buzz that made me eventually lose interest in catching the documentary film as scheduled and perhaps this is part of the motivation behind Dicillo picking Johnny Depp to do some of the same. When You're Strange is currently playing at the Berlin Film Festival, and at this point I'm not sure whether it will be an entirely new narration or just a re-recording with Depp. The actor last voiced some excerpts from the work of his dearly departed pal Hunter Thompson for Alex Gibney’s docu Gonzo: The Life and Times of Hunter Thompson. The dopcu enters the dark and dangerous world of one of America’s most influential bands using only footage shot between 1966 and 1971.... »

Director Tom Dicillo Exclusive Video Interview - When You’Re Strange -- The director of the new documentary on The Doors talks about making the film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival

3 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Note: Due to interviewing over 30 people and being provided with movie clips to almost every film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it’s taken some time to post everything on the site. The goal is to be finished with all the Sundance stuff this week. In case you’ve missed clips or video interviews, look for a big wrap-up article when it’s all online. Another of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Tom Dicillo’s “When You’re Strange”. The film is a documentary on The Doors and Jim Morrison, and its big selling point is that it features all new footage of the band and Jim. While this was one of the many films I missed at this year’s festival, I did post a trailer, so you can see some of the movie here. Anyway, while at »

SXSW 09: Full lineup announced

1 February 2009 9:12 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.

From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.

For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.

I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..

Lineup after the break.

When You’Re Strange Trailer – Premiered at Sundance -- A documentary about The Doors – including all new footage with the band and Jim Morrison

23 January 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

“When You’re Strange” is a documentary about The Doors that just premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It was made by director Tom Dicillo and its big selling point is that it features tons of unseen footage of the band and Jim Morrison. For fans of the group, this pretty much makes it a must film movie. In the coming days I’ll be posting exclusive interviews with director Tom Dicillo and Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger (members of The Doors), but until then, I’ve just been given the trailer so check it out. Further down is the synopsis from the Sundance website. ||COLLIDER_FLASH||5327||500||407||COLLIDER_FLASH|| When You're Strange is far from a nostalgic journey and much more than a biopic. Using only original footage shot between 1966 and 1971, Dicillo's film attempts to disentangle truth from myth, depict the artist and the ... »

20 January 2009 5:37 AM, PST | Spout.com | See recent Spout news »

= Tom Dicillo has been a Sundance mainstay for years, having had over five films in the festival since 1992. Some of the standouts include 1995's Living in Oblivion (a must-see for any aspiring filmmaker) to 2007's Delirious, both of which star Steve Buscemi. This year he's back with a documentary about The Doors, When You're Strange. It's a feature-length movie comprised entirely of never-before-seen archival film footage, consisting of rehearsals, concerts ... »

Sundance Journal: 13 Must See Films for the 2009 Edition

15 January 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Greetings folks! I don't seem to have this problem with festivals like Cannes or Toronto, but making a film viewing schedule for Sundance is a futile, but necessary exercise. While, the the list usually doesn't remain intact past the 48-hour mark, I do end up making one for the obvious reasons: you want to see certain films and make sure you don't overlap, but the real necessity is in you want to free up time for interviews, a couple of parties and since the organizers only give out one public ticket (for the fest's opening weekend) and two for the rest of the fest, you sort of need to pre-establish your viewing pecking order. So far, I've come up with a list of 32 (this includes about 10 docs, and at least half are from first time filmmakers) and excluding tomorrow's open film screening, it means that we are looking at »

Oddly enough Dominic Murphy's White Lightnin' will be playing although it's having it's premier at Sundance.
