Let Me Off at Off- and Off-Off-Broadway

1 November 2009 6:59 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

There is nothing inherently wrong with movie and TV stars being big draws on Broadway, necessitating current top ticket prices of 140 bucks or so, along with seats in the mezzanine that are so narrow they make you feel morbidly obese. This is nothing necessarily improper with any of this, because, in the case of, say Yazmina Reza's Tony Award winning drama God of Carnage, a powerful Albee-esque drama starring the brilliant Tony-winning Marcia Gay Harden, along with James Gandolfini, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels, the $81.50 you spend for a Tuesday night in the nosebleed seats becomes a transcendent theatrical experience at the Bernard Jacobs, with director Matthew Warchus expertly guiding two sets of parents into upper class warfare after one of their children has knocked out the teeth of the other. But as satisfying as God of Carnage is, there... »

Top 7 Films Directed by Actors Turned Directors

30 October 2009 4:34 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

The old joke is that all actors want to direct.  Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list.  The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors.  This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You.  Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.

7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

Directed by John Cassavetes

Recap: A portrait of family in crisis when a woman (Gena Rowlands) goes mad and her husband (Peter Falk) tries to understand it.

The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

Emma Stone Believes In Zombies: The MTV Quote Of The Day

1 October 2009 1:35 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

"The thing about zombies is they're conceivable. I don't really know vampires, in a real world, if those kind of people can really exist, because they don't breathe anything. Zombies could really happen. It could be a plague or an outbreak and it's conceivable that people could turn into crazy flesh-eating monsters at any given moment. So it's almost a little scarier. Vampires are a little more fantastical and fun to think about, but I don't think they could actually happen. Zombies could."

-"Zombieland" star Emma Stone on why zombies frighten her more than vampires — and which ones she believes in more. The 20-year-old actress ("Superbad," "The House Bunny") stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin in the new splatter comedy opening tomorrow (Friday). "Zombieland" also features one of the greatest cameos of all time (a cameo that was supposed to go to the late Patrick Swayze »

Away We Go Blu-ray Review

29 September 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Upon finishing Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road (2008) it felt like the life had been drained out of me. While impeccably produced and acted, the film is so emotionally heavy and unrelentingly depressing, I am relieved there was not a firearm or straight razor within arm's reach during viewing. I have the utmost respect for the caliber of the work but should it be so painful to endure? Almost as an anecdote, the director churned out the indie flick Away We Go (2009) within six months that is a total reversal in tone from his previous effort. Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are unmarried and awaiting the birth of their first child when surprised by the news that his parents are leaving the country for two years with the kicker that they are departing before the due date. Since Verona's folks are deceased (which is part of the reason she »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Away We Go’ Proves Impossible to Resist

28 September 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Filmmaker Sam Mendes has always been drawn to telling stories set in a dysfunctional America where the sanctity of marriage is anything but “sanct.” For the past decade, he has specialized in brutally frank social satires about the deterioration of the American family. His work is nearly always riveting, but could never be described as “feel good”…until now. The happily unmarried couple in “Away We Go” sharply contrasts with the unhappily married couple of “Revolutionary Road.” It is a rather marvelous lark, and easily the most optimistic film Mendes has ever made.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0 John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph are two enormously appealing actors, and they finally get the opportunity to prove it onscreen. They perfectly capture the excitement and uncertainty of a couple in their early thirties desperate to prove to themselves that they are not “f—k-ups.” With their first child on the way, Burt (Krasinski »

Film Review: Away We Go

22 September 2009 10:07 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Ah! Sam Mendes! That old poe face laugh a minute joker is at at again. After covering suburban alienation, violent gangster under worlds, the effects of war on the psyche, marriage meltdowns, suicide and murder, he's this time turned his cynical humanist hand to... an all out sweet comedy? And one that is as brilliantly simple in execution as it is uncomplicated in plot. After odd couple Burt and Verona find out (in a brilliantly played opening scene) that they are expecting a baby and also that Burt's parents are fleeing the country before the birth, the pair find themselves strangely unencumbered with no real sense of place or home and set off on a little trip to visit old friends with the hope of deciding where they want to raise their family. John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph's off kilter chemistry and perfect comedy timing helps make this easy »

Brad Pitt Could Be Moriarty After All In The Developing 'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel

22 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Brad Pitt has been the subject of a whirlwind of internet rumors that would mystify Sherlock Holmes himself. The "Inglourious Basterds" star was pegged for a cameo as the nefarious Moriarty, the titular master detective's arch-nemesis, in the Guy Ritchie-directed "Sherlock Holmes," but denials from Warner Bros. and other official parties effectively squashed that rumor.

Do you think the real Moriarty would reveal his identity so easily? No, he'd confuse his pursuers with misdirection and false leads. But just like legends, a good rumor never dies.

The Hollywood Reporter is getting in on the rumor mill by suggesting that Brad Pitt has had discussions with producers to star as Moriarty in a potential "Sherlock Holmes" sequel. The report acknowledges the previous Pitt rumors, but states that "those familiar with the script say the character [of Moriarty] is in shadow and cannot be recognized," verifying director Ritchie's statement that the Holmes villain »

Sherlock Holmes Sequel Seems Elementary

21 September 2009 2:25 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Warner Bros., not wanting to be the main suspect in "The Case of the Slow-to-Develop Sequel", is already developing a follow-up 'Sherlock Holmes' film, and much of the same talent is expected to return.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actors Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, as well as director Guy Ritchie could be back for the sequel, which is being penned by screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

Meanwhile, there has been much speculation that Brad Pitt could be making a full-fledged, flesh and blood appearance in the next 'Sherlock Holmes' movie; if it happens, as the detective’s nemesis Moriarty.

Pitt is said to appear in several shots of the new film, but those familiar with the Sherlock Holmes script say the character remains in the shadows. But if there’s any truth to the rumors, it would be quite the addition of »

Daniels' Fears Over Carnage Co-stars

8 September 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Jeff Daniels hopes his God Of Carnage co-star James Gandolfini will not cancel another performance of the Broadway show - insisting he has "no patience" for actors who don't show up for work.

The pair will again share the stage alongside Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden when the Yasmina Reza play resumes on Tuesday after a brief summer hiatus.

Gandolfini was forced to scrap a preview of the show on doctors' orders to rest his voice in March - and Daniels is anxious his celebrity co-stars will fall ill before the cast takes its final bow.

He tells the New York Daily News, “I’m old school. I don’t have any patience... There’s a responsibility to show up, even more with us (four) to do the show no matter what.” »

Would the Real Truman Capote Please Stand Up?

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener in Capote

Photo: Sony Pictures Classics As I said in my What I Watched column on Sunday, I finally got around to watching the 2005 and 2006 Truman Capote films, Capote and Infamous. The first earned five Oscar nominations and one win for Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the eccentric author to the delight of many. The second was released just over a year later to absolutely no attention whatsoever. This isn't a surprise. Technically Capote is a better film and was deserving of its nomination of Hoffman in the lead role, but to say it is a quality Best Picture candidate, Director or Adapted Screenplay is pushing it, but also comes in large part due to what I perceive to be a poor year in quality film. I mean, Munich was a Best Picture contender and Crash came out on top. Yikes. However, my commentary »

Blu-Ray Review: Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck in Thriller ‘State of Play’

3 September 2009 8:23 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – I had some issues with “State of Play” in theaters, but it’s an intelligent thriller that is bound to find an audience on DVD and Blu-Ray and the Universal-produced Blu-Ray of the Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck film is an excellent one, the kind of release that can polish a good film and make it nearly great.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 The American “State of Play” is a truncated version of the far-superior BBC mini-series that starred Bill Nighy, David Morrissey, John Simm, Kelly Macdonald, and James MacAvoy. Directed by Kevin Macdonald and starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, and Robin Wright Penn, this version of “State of Play” stands pretty well on its own merits, especially on Blu-Ray, but it’s merely a shadow of its amazing source material.

State of Play was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 1st, 2009.
