Last night I was invited to a screening of a pilot for a television series as part of the Independent Television Festival, and it might just be a peek into the future of television development. Directors and feature films have been going down this road for years, and you've seen the results. Festivals like Sundance and SXSW swell with independent films, studios get into bidding wars for the hot movies, directors get plucked from the indie freshwater stream and dunked into the saline-rich waters of the studio ocean, and the wheels of film-industry keep on turning. But what about television? It's an expensive landscape to develop in, but Sex Ed: The Series was created solely as a spec pilot, and creators Tamela D'Amico (director/producer) and Ernie Vecchione (writer) shot it in 11 days using Panasonic HD cameras, and put together a fairly impressive cast that includes Joanna Cassidy of Blade Runner and Six Feet Under fame »

Chicago – “The Hunger” is one of the more unusual entries in the history of the TV anthology series, a personal favorite sub-genre of this writer raised on “The Twilight Zone,” “The Outer Limits,” “Tales From the Crypt,” and “Amazing Stories”. It has amazing star power, a loose relation to a great ’80s horror movie, and enough thrills to entertain, but has been largely forgotten by TV history.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0 “The Hunger” aired in syndicated form from 1997-2000. It is not directly based on the film of the same name but does feature some loose relations - horror theme, David Bowie hosted season two, and the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony, who directed the film “The Hunger”) produced.
The Hunger: The Complete First Season was released on DVD on June 16th, 2009.

The first season of the show was hosted by Terence Stamp and, while it has some significant storytelling flaws, »

Chicago – TNT’s medical drama “HawthoRNe” would have felt overly generic in any month of the year, but debuting in the same one as Showtime’s far darker, subtler and more entertaining “Nurse Jackie” does the show no favors at all. Jada Pinkett Smith executive-produces and stars in a well-intentioned program with a good pedigree (John Masius of “St. Elsewhere” is one of the producers) but one that feels like a relic of a bygone era of more manipulative television.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0 The premiere of “HawthoRNe” introduces us to the title character, Nurse Christina Hawthorne, on the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death. Hawthorne is the Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, leading a group of nurses against two-dimensional doctors always trying to screw them over and patients who need them to survive.

TNT has forged a solid reputation for dependable dramatic programming over the past few years, and, although they have some of the biggest shows on cable TV right now, with The Closer, Saving Grace, Raising the Bar and one of my personal favorites, Leverage, there is always room for one more hit on the slate. It looks like TNT will have that additional hit series when Hawthorne, which stars Jada Pinkett Smith as Chief Nursing Officer Christina Hawthorne and Michael Vartan as Chief of Surgery Tom Wakefield, premieres on Tuesday, June 16 at 9 Pm Et on TNT ( for my full review of the pilot episode, which was pretty damn good, folks). I was lucky enough to be invited to a press conference for the new show, where stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan answered a few questions from a small group of reports. Here's what they had to say about »

Paz Vega is a major star in Spain, but she’s never really caught on in the States despite being in a number of Hollywood films as the female lead. Unfortunately her latest movie, “Human Contract” isn’t going to help in that regard, because the film is going straight to DVD June 30 courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film is a pretty spicy little drama, because let’s face it, when you think Jada Pinkett Smith, you think spicy little dramas. Okay, maybe not so much, but the trailer sure sells the sex pretty hard. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The film is Rated R, so one supposes there will be follow-through with all the teasing. A highly successful but personally tortured ad businessman (Jason Clarke) has his life turned upside down after meeting a free-spirited, mysterious beauty (Paz Vega), who tempts him to explore reckless love Starring Jason Clarke, »

A sequel to 1988 fantasy comedy "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" could be brewing. Talking to MTV News, director Robert Zemeckis offered an interesting scoop of the matter when he confessed that he is indeed toying with the idea to bring the ill-behaved rabbit back to the big screen.
"I'll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability - the digital tools, performance capture - I'm starting to think about 'Roger Rabbit'," the 56-year-old Academy Award-winning helmer stated. Still when pressed further on the potential film's details, the "Beowulf" director responded with a rejection, "I can't give you more details."
While nothing is certain yet on the possible new installment of "Roger Rabbit" movie, the original 1988 "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" has successfully rekindled an interest in the golden Age of American animation. Combining the use of traditional animation and live action with elements of film noir, »

Director Roger Spottiswoode.
Neglected Gems of the 1980’s: Roger Spottiswoode Remembers Under Fire
by Jon Zelazny
Editor's Note: The following article appeared on EightMillionStories.com in 2008.
The name may not ring a bell, but Roger Spottiswoode has been directing feature films for nearly thirty years, including popular hits like Turner and Hooch (1989), Air America (1990), and the James Bond adventure Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), as well as outstanding made-for-cable dramas like And the Band Played On (1993), Hiroshima (1995), and Noriega (2000).
2008 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of his remarkable third feature Under Fire, which starred Nick Nolte and Gene Hackman as journalists covering the 1979 revolution in Nicaragua.
It’s generally a given that every Hollywood movie endures a long, tortuous road to find financing, but not Under Fire. It had a long, hard road as well… but only after the film had been completed. Roger Spottiswoode and I spoke by phone:

In this edition of Gays Of Our Lives, we introduce “In The Spotlight,” a new recurring feature where we examine in depth a particular series, character or storyline of gay interest.
First up, Casualty’s Dr. Toby De Silva, played by Matthew Needham, who bid goodbye this past week to the long running BBC medical series after a story arc during which the character struggled not only with his sexuality, but with his decision to become a doctor as well.
When Toby first joined the show in September 2007, his conflict over whether or not to be a doctor was quickly apparent as we learned that his overbearing parents had forced him into medicine. And while his relationships with women were rare, fleeting and usually disastrous, there hadn’t been much of an inkling regarding Toby being gay – at least not until he was found in bed with Ben Harding (Mark Letheren »
