Kiefer Sutherland Calls His DUI 'A Dumb Mistake'

15 July 2008 9:45 AM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

Kiefer Sutherland says making sure 24 could proceed without a hitch was his top priority when he served seven weeks in jail last winter following convictions for DUI and violating probation – which he called a "dumb mistake." Sutherland served 48 days behind bars in Glendale, Calif. during the writers' strike. "It made what I had to do – obviously a very stupid thing that I did – it made that easier because I could go and the show was not affected by it," Sutherland, 42, said Monday during the Television Critics Association conference in Beverly Hills. "I made a really dumb mistake, and to be

Shane Meadows’ British drama “Somers Town” won the prestigious Michael Powell Award Sunday at the 62nd edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Praised by jury member Danny Huston, the film follows two teenagers who spend their time pursuing moneymaking scams and falling in love with local waitresses. Meadows’ directing credits also include “This is England.”

The Ppg Award for best performance in a British feature went to Robert Carlyle for “Summer,” Kenneth Glenaan’s drama about the struggle of a man to confront his past. Carlyle also recently starred in “28 Weeks Later.”

Werner Herzog won the award for best documentary for “Encounters at the End of the World,” in which the director travels to Antarctica to capture the landscape’s rarely seen beauty.

The Standard Life Audience Award was presented to James Marsh for “Man on Wire,” a documentary about tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring but often illegal stunts.

McAvoy Fights For School

22 May 2008 5:11 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Scottish actor James McAvoy is leading the fight to save an acting school from closure.

The Atonement star graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (Rsamd), along with other Scottish thespians including Robert Carlyle, Alan Cumming and Dr. Who's David Tennant.

But the academy is set to close unless it can plug a $1.2 million (GBP600,000) funding gap - and McAvoy has now written an open letter to the country's government urging officials to keep Scotland's premiere acting institution open.

He writes in the letter: "The Rsamd is the only one of its kind in Scotland and, without it our country's future teachers, actors, musicians and technical professionals would be forced to go south of the border (to England).

"Because of the Rsamd, I'm a product not only of Scotland but of Scottish training. That's something I'm proud of, and I hope the Scottish government see fit to help save the future of this national treasure."

3 April 2008 12:24 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell has turned his attention to acting - landing a role in Irvine Welsh's latest movie The Meat Trade.

The British rocker will play a poor Irish musician who is killed by two grave robbers, played by Colin Firth and Robert Carlyle.

The film - due to be released later this year - will be a modern take on the chilling 19th century Scottish West Port murders by brutal body snatchers William Burke and William Hare.

The 27-year-old says, "It's going to be so much fun. I love horror and I'm a really big fan of Irvine Welsh's work. I loved Trainspotting."

Carlyle Confused By Typecasting

9 January 2008 4:07 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Scottish star Robert Carlyle is baffled he's always cast as a dangerous movie villain, insisting he's a mild-mannered family man in real life.

The actor - best known for portraying psychopathic character Begbie in the 1996 drama Trainspotting - is no stranger to playing big screen bad guys, but fears forever being typecast in reprehensible roles.

He says, "I wonder what it is that makes producers and directors look at this little innocent Glaswegian face of mine and think, 'Carlyle can look like a total s**t so convincingly.

"Let's give him the role of the villainous killer with the nasty twist in his character'."

The 46-year-old played the villainous Renard opposite Pierce Brosnan in 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, as well as a cannibalistic soldier in Ravenous in the same year. Carlyle has also took on the role of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in the 2003 TV mini-series Hitler: The Rise Of Evil.
